Oh John you were the soundtrack of my growing up years ,my heartfelt thanks for all your unparalleled music…not sure we will ever see your likes again. God bless you big man. RIP the great John Giblin on the fretless bass.
Thanks for watching and commenting 🎸
Yes the bass is incredible@@ScottishTeeVee
Only just found this channel, I'm one of John's Nephews along with my brother and we formed this band Grace and Danger in his honour. It never ceases to amaze the amount of people his music touched and it makes me proud to be related to him ♥️
Great name for a JM band !!
Well done you,he’s influenced soooo many, even the younger generation ❤
Yeah ay he had a mad range of massive self invented blue jazz cool folk cross rock with a voice sliding, twisting, rolling and bellowing like animated oil, honey, Bovril and grit on a polished floor- genius. My favourite was Sapphire, i think.. i know, losing the memory.. thing. I've lost all my vinyl, tapes, cds many times...theft, loss, misplacement, erroneous lending practices, earthquake damage, being kicked out of countries, you know how it goes haha- true but
A mate of mine bought a vinyl record from London on holiday to me ( I live in Ireland ) played it to death first time hearing ‘may you never’ think it was solid air. Went onto buy most of the albums on vinyl and then cd. It’s essential to have John martyn in your collection of music. A lot of songs here in the concert are not his songs it doesn’t matter love his soul in his vocal.
I grew up with JM right through marriage and children JM covered most aspects of life in his music. Saw him 3/4 times . Love him always play him often!
Good luck with Grace and Danger
Brings back a lot of memories, great nights , great gigs, great friend . This super Clip shows the guy I knew, loved, respected & now miss so much .
Grace & Danger be proud & take his music into new times .

No one to beat him when he was on-form! Still remember 1973 gig in Mousehole Cornwall where he first played “May You Never” - Also had a beer with him after Rock goes to College gig 1978
Thanks for watching, commenting and sharing the memories Colin 🙂

thank you .. sunshine better is my "thing".. could listen all day 🙌
Seen John with this band in Edinburgh and they complimented his music well. He walked on and his first words were "anyone got a smoke?"😀 He made us feel so relaxed it was like we were in his living room and spoke to us just like he knew us for many years. Then the music started and WOW!!! what a groove, what a sound, what a band, so tight, then the icing on the cake, that voice Mmmmmmh! John joked and laughed in between songs and constantly changed the Phrasing and sound of his voice from the original. Top class stuff from a talented musician. Thanks for the memories John.
Sorely missed, but what a brilliant catalogue to have left.
I got together with my daughter's Dad, dancing round his scruffy Milton Keynes bedroom to JM's May You Never. JM will always be dear to my heart.
His vocal “I’ve been temp-te-eeeeeed too long”. Amazing
Chapman Stick @ 04:03, sooo gr8...Smiling John, rest in paradise 😘
Amazing John martyn thanks for your great music
Thank you for uploading this performance from Surreys finest son …… BRILLIANT
14 yrs after the genius passed x
I am glad you found and enjoyed this video Richard🙂
Omi god, I was *obsessed* with Solid Air for so long. Had it on repeat on my ancient minidisc player! Would secretly listen to it when I was supposed to be taking minutes in very boring SU meetings
One of my first vinyl records of JM. Solid Air … Still has so much going on often listen late at night
Both times I saw John Martyn live, the guy playing Chapman Stick here was supporting him, second time as part of a full band but first time was just him and John. John did 30 minutes on his own with acoustic guitar. Just magic.
Fantastic upload again !! Thanks
Thank you for commenting Colm 🙂
@@ScottishTeeVee Pleasure. Your channel's brilliant!
@@mathanmor Thank you Colm 😊
Wow. Super-happy you've uploaded this. I recorded this on VHS at the time, haven't seen it since. There's also a fantastic Richard Thompson set on YT from the same series.
As uploaded by me some time ago, enjoy ruclips.net/video/wQrEF_4sf14/видео.html
Thank you for uploading this , had this on VHS for years. Sounds brilliant. I always wished they did not play the interview over that stunning guitar into to 'Glory Box' , that's my only gripe with this broadcast 😊
Agreed, the interview over the music is very annoying. Thanks for watching and commenting
It's a rare day when a new Johnny Boy video goes up on RUclips. Thanks for the upload
Thanks for watching and commenting. There's links to more rare video of JM at the end of this video
Brilliant - never seen this. Thanks for sharing!
Stunning good ❤
Great from John, a genius at work, everytime he plays solid air its a new version.
I do hate when your trying to see John's fingerpicking or chord changes and the cameraman has the drummer faded in over John so you can't see anything.
RIP pieces John 😂.
Thanks for watching and commenting Mike
Fly high in the universe beautiful soul your spirit lives forever loved your talent amazing man every time I see shooting star across the nite sky i think off u john love and respect till we meet again somewhere in some bar in the universe ❤❤❤❤
Jump to 11:00, that's the highlight here. An unbelievable good and biting rendition of a Randy Newman composition.
legend
Después de tanto tiempo, se le echa de menos
What a great jazz soul blues voice JM developed. Not recognised. He should have done more blues jazz as this he enjoyed and it progressed him. A great musical talent
he is recognized after his pass like many artist .. He music was unreal .. too bad i was a kid when he was rolling .. find him nowdays .. still gives me feelings .. he lives forever
He tried to hang out with the jazz circles for awhile, but he didn’t like it because he said the musicians were too arrogant. The guy was salt of the earth and didn’t suffer fools.
he walks in and take it over like a boss ..
Once one's played a ChapmanStick, the possibilities seem infinite!
Unique
Did this recording ever make it to CD?
Not that I know of but if someone wishes to press up an illicit LP record version then my master tape is available and I can ask the sound man from OGWT to do a beautiful remaster, no joke.
Which TV show is that from?
Boxed Set
British? Fucking hell. Advertised like a tesco packet of strawberries
This is some good shit.
John Martyn legend is an understatement for this man, he was like best guitarist, best vocalist, best lyricist all in one. His performances range from troubled and terrible to so very memorable and excellence bettered by none. Thank you so much for your music 🎶 and legacy RIP John Martyn
Thanks for watching and commenting Antony🙂
I absolutely love John Martyn's music, but technically he wasn't the best singer, or indeed guitar player, not by a very long way.
But being technically brilliant doesn't guarantee the music will be brilliant. I think John's brilliance comes from his unique and natural deficiencies in perfection, because it gives his music character.
@@DjNikGnashers You enjoyed this video ?
@@scoutthedoggie Yes I love John's music, and actually play/perform a couple of his songs myself at open mic events.
John didn’t play the guitar in a conventional manner, a true individualist. I loved his style
Sometimes misunderstood genius and self destruction are too close, rest in peace John thank you for such memorable touching music.
Many times, the most tortured and sensitive souls are the greatest artists. That's why anti-depressants (along with a lack of industry investment) have killed so much of modern music. Like Geezer Butler said, he used to self-medicate with music, drinking and drugs while today he never writes or plays because he started on prescription medications.

all the way through his evolution to his latest.

The whole authentic evolution and his inspiration of his music is so true to life and unlike anyone else!
So many great albums and concerts.
" Bless the Weather " is just one of his many sweet earlier acoustic ones.

Yeah…John Martyn?? …. He’s a folk singer isn’t he? 😂😂😂 more soul in his little finger than many so called soul singers. Lovely set from this time, a star and much missed

Guy in the Chapman stick needs his volume turning down on that solid Air solo
One of the greatest songwriters ever, Randy Newman, had his song covered by JM. He has been praised indeed.
Brilliant, thanks for this one👍
Thank you very much . A gem , wonderful music. outstanding. Lusches from Germany

I remember when 'And...' came out, it was such a sharp left-turn, it took me a few plays to get into it, but I love it now. I watched this on STV when it was broadcast. Love Jim Lampi's contributions on Stick. Very cool.

I just saw this for the first time…. It’s such an amazing version to fit the times, that smooth jazz 90s feel works so well that song

Is it weird that I think of him as the Scottish Sting?
(Is he even Scottish? Lol)
Edit: *after hearing him speak* Yes! Thank God I haven't been living in my own delusion for 20 years
Born in England, Scottish father, spent much of his youth in Scotland. To be honest, for some reason I always thought he was Scottish as well.
@@ScottishTeeVee Aaaaaah nearly lol
Sting is not worthy to be Johnny boy's roadie in my humble view.
The lovely John, I went to see him with a friend in Belfast in the early 1980s. I still have my ticket from that evening. It cost me the princely sum of three pounds and fifty pence. Now that was value for money.
Had a bar room fight with JM in '92 Didn't stop me appreciating his amazing talent. Influenced my songwriting a lot. Take a listen.
Saw John in Hemel Hempstead got several of his works great artist there never be another like him
Music is so cool, I love john such a talent its always a pleasure
so good 🙌
Glad you think so David
God. A voice. Missed as a brother
brilliant
Thanks for uploading this - I saw John play live many times from the late 1970s onwards but never saw the lineup in this video: Arran Ahmun - Drums/Percussion, Jim Lampi - Chapman Stick, Alan Thomson - fretless bass, Foster Paterson - Keyboards. It was sad to see John’s health decline after his operation and I still miss him, but it is good to have videos like this to remind us of his greatness. Thank you.
Hi Stuart, thanks for the names of the band members, I have added them to the video information. You were lucky to have seen John in concert a few times back in the day, many will be jealous including me 😉
@@ScottishTeeVee Apologies, brain fog intervened - the keyboard player in this video is of course long-time colleague Spencer Cozens - Foss Paterson played keys on several of John's recordings, noticeably 'The Apprentice' amongst others ;-)
@@acliani Thanks for that correction Stuart, I have corrected it,
I much appreciate you taking the time to supply that info 🙂
percussion is a rough hand. Tin Ears muddy Mr Martyn's Muse. GO to his original albums. Very beautiful. This broadcast has all the gumption of a Contractual Obligation.
Find him when he was young... Gorgeous
Not sure if it’s the technology of the era or what but it sounds awful. Bleak hollow thin compared to his earlier stuff. Like he needed someone to tell him what he didn't want to be told at that time.
You are some man Steevee. I saw John 8 times, tried to buy him a pint in the Cafe Royal in Edinburgh one afternoon, he refused and put the 3 pints I'd ordered for my pals and I onto his road managers tab. He was awesome, flawed but undeniably awesome.
You were very lucky to have met him and see him 8 times, wow. 😎
Backstage after a show in Manchester, John poured me a pint of bacardi and irn bru
