I have been listening to John's music for over 50 years and also saw him in concert a few times. I never get tired of his music and often find new things within it
My late Wife & I never missed an opportunity to see Big John play live when he was in our vicinity! What a staggering talent, a true powerhouse. Rest Easy Big Man ...
Such a distinctive voice, never too be be repeated, what a shame he died so early, I could and can listen to him forever, I have no words for his loss, than I am a lesser man in the future. Sleep well John, you are missed by me immeasurably, good night John. 🙏
Should I ever find myself at these so called ‘Pearly Gates’, and asked if I had any regrets, it would be that I hadn’t seen John Martyn live in concert. My younger brother ‘checked out’ too early in similar circumstances to JM and they really are kindred spirits. Watching his wonderful clips is a great comfort. Also, I remember the first time I heard Solid Air, mamma mia!!!
These guys could have, on several occasions, gone anywhere with this. Maybe they should have. But they have kept it SO tight, focused and so chilled. Masterful.
I remember someone who said they were doing the job of roadie for him and said he was a true gentleman. It's good to know he had that to him as well as a remarkable talent. This is as good a blues interpretation I've ever heard.
JM. One of the all-time greatest musicians. Everything about this song (lyrics, vocals and guitar work) is amazing. I could/will listen to this version very often for the rest of my life, God willing. One of my biggest regrets is that I never had the privilege of seeing him live. Thank God for the vast body of work he has gifted to humanity. RIP John and thank you.
I had the privilege of seeing him here in Glasgow (Celtic Connections) in 2005, 2007 and 2008. The 2007 gig was a tour of Solid Air (with Danny Thompson. Immense.
I first heard of john martyn about 1 month ago on johny walker sunday show.[ may you never. ] awsome. ,and have listened to his music since. I love music but had never heard of him.{Why} I feel gutted. PS. I am 67 years old.
+john callaghan im 25 luckily enough i have a mother with an incredible taste in music ive seen john live twice once when i was sixteen and two months before he died best live performer ive ever seen
+john callaghan I was aware of some of John Martyn's earlier folk music, especially May You Never and a few other of his earlier songs but have myself only just recently cottoned on to what an insanely good blues/jazz vocalist and electric guitarist he was (his acoustic prowess long being the stuff of legend)...I've got some more discovering to do also...
I have had a drink on a couple of occasions with the man,amd it saddens me to think it will never happen again . Thank you for everythong John. Miss you man.
Oh man, beautiful, just beautful - he may not have written this one but he sure owns it.. Aw jeez, John. Thank you for making my life better than it was ever going to be. Love you, mate.
I had the pleasure of playing one of his songs for him in the Rotterdam Bar, Belfast back bar after one of his 3 appearances during the Save The Rotterdam Campaign year. WOW.... there were only about 20 people in that lock in that night!! and he summoned his guitar tech to get his martin for me with "hey.... get my dreadnought... i wanna hear this guy sing"!
I like this because it puts the emphasis on Martyn's vocals, not his guitar playing. I think his vocals were not given the regard they deserved, and this shows what a fab singer he was.
Only got introduced to this feller last year by fellow scouser Tony Santemera whilst working in Minehead and staying in a caravan in Butlins. Nice on Tony-- How I ever missed this performer I will never know. Brilliance. Something else. This track and Solid Air are fantastic. Sorry I wont get to see him live.
always LOVED THIS. Feel fortunate to have see John perform on several occasions. Both solo and with his band. I always enjoyed it more when he was surrounded by fellow musicians, as I think he did too.
Hi Jane. Loved the plot tour. Your cloud pruning worked a treat! The trail camera footage was interesting too. Hope to see. More of that soon. I'll be going to Gardeners World live this year. We haven't been to the NEC for some time as I've had some heart problems. That's all sorted now so my wife Jill and I will be enjoying the day there. It's a great day out.
Hell John Yesterday I saw Ben Harper played his song in the Jazz Festival Of Vienne... one another way to play this song. Honestly I prefer your version. I miss you.Your Voice and much more. Every day. God will be so pleased to sing with you... see you next time John.
TS series 3 video complete - WHIRLIEDVD01 (0 JM items) TS series 1 video complete - WHIRLIEDVD02 (4 JM items) This is one of the 3 JM items from TS series 2, of which there is still no official DVD. There have been various CD releases of series 2 audio highlights over the years, but not sure what's still in print. HTH
After hearing this first, I was rather disappointed with Harper's song. John Martyn puts an agony of feeling into this that wasn't there before. One of those rare occasions when the cover surpasses the original... A true artist...

I think musical contemporaries admired him even more than his fans.
What a powerful song it doesn't get much better than that bless you big john R.I.P. dude.
Transatlantic Sessions has resulted in some of the finest music ever recorded.
Completely agree!
Such a distinctive voice, never too be be repeated, what a shame he died so early, I could and can listen to him forever, I have no words for his loss, than I am a lesser man in the future. Sleep well John, you are missed by me immeasurably, good night John. 🙏
Never heard this before it’s really cool. Once again JM delivers.

Utterly mesmerising. Genius.
Musicians of the very highest calibre..... Great to see Paul Brady with JM....
Spellbinding...easily one of the best songs/videos I've seen all year. The singing, the musicianship...this ensemble is superb.

Ogni volta che lo ascolto cado in verticale nelle viscere mie e della terra. Grazie John ovunque tu sia.

Thank you so much for posting. I have found a lot of great stuff by the big man today, stuff that wasn't available on here before. Great job
These guys are real pros, they keep playing but I think I'd crumple into a little heap every single time JM did that roar from his soul.
one word: phenomenal.
Bang on the money! Totally sublime.
My hero. Rest in Peace John. Your music will be with me for ever. x
unglaublich gut !
Dieser Mister wird da oben auch geliebt werden !
Marvellous talent.....heart rending performance
I'm a big fan of Harper's music, and this is the best cover I've ever heard of this song
Thanks foe leaving so much for us to enjoy, bless you John..
Absolutely transcendent!!
Thankyou for this. Just outstanding all round performance. Someone on BBC Scotland deserved a Lairdship for dreaming up the Transatlantic Sessions.
I never knew I could hold my breadth for 6 minutes and 16 seconds. Whew!!!
Hell John

what can i say absolutely astounding stuff !! what a tune ! think im gonna wear this video out !!!!!!!!
this recording is perfect as possible... very simple solo but so much feeling in it...
I now know what 'hair standing up on the back of my neck' feels like. Superb.
Another great cover from John Martyn proving once again that slowing down a good original seems to almost always works to give a nice new perspective.
Sheer genius! John at his peak. BBC4 are re-screening the documentary about him on 20th. March as a tribute to the great man.
Still chokes me up. Love ya man.
What a beautiful intro wow …
Maravilloso. Se te echa de menos John. Muchísimo
The voice of a generation, even if most of that generation was too distracted by the pretenders to know it.
Wow! Great rendition of this Harper's song !! Five Stars.
You said it, mate. It was something else.
what can i say absolutely astounding stuff !! what a tune !

This is awesome: John Martin, "Excuse me, Mister..."
After hearing this first, I was rather disappointed with Harper's song. John Martyn puts an agony of feeling into this that wasn't there before. One of those rare occasions when the cover surpasses the original... A true artist...
lol
That was Johns Genius.
Thats because Ben harper is terrible!
One of those rare occasions ? All Johnny Cash covers makes you lie :)
Some of the old brilliance is still there. 10 years before, that was the time he still had the chance to full recovery.
i can't get over it
J.M The Boss. Still missing yah every day. xx
RIP Beautiful Man.
