One thing I loved about John Martyn was the sheer pleasure he himself seemed to take in the music he played, the smiles and giggles when he played something even he seemed to be in awe of, just like we were... The more I watch him on here the more and more I wish I had taken that chance to see him when I could've...
Not many people can keep 2 chords going for a whole song like John. i guess it's in the textures he creates with his SUPERB voice.hail JM we love you and miss the days when music wasn't screwed for money in the 1st and last and all the in between instances.
The one and only. Standing knee-deep in mud, at Glastonbury in 1984, I heard him play. 'Solid Air' for the first time, and was blown away. Saw him many times after that (the 'secret' gig in Preston, just him and John Giblin, was probably my favourite). Still hard to believe he's gone.
pretty much speechless...whatever personal torments he's gone through to result in current physical state is his business...of course we wish the BEST but at least his LOVE for music is unwaivering!... much respect to you, john!
John Martyn...My absolute all-time FAVORITE singer singing, “Bless the Weather.” Whoa! This video made my day! P.S. And don’t overlook was an incredibly CREATIVE songwriter and guitarist he was, too!
He was the best: a mix of so many genres, and making his own in the process. As a jazz singer, his exquisite tone and conviction has inspired me over and over again. Wow!
I saw him in sydney play and I think it was 1978 or 79 at the State Theatre. This is the JM of old that I really loved. This was great to see!! brings back memories
Well while you are all talking about playing like him I just wanna say bless the weather that brought him to me..........and no storm can take his music away from our hearts..............
I'm meant to be doing so much on my laptop but got waylaid by Mr.Martyn. This is my 4th of his so far, I may as well keep going, chilling beautifully, work can wait til tomorrow. Glad I saw the big man one last time.xxx
at times the timing is off but when you consider what the guy is actually playing, and then you see that smile on his face, everything just works. incredible. you've got to love JM
It's the John Bonham & Jazz vibe of disregard for time keeping. It creates an unsettling rhythmic dissonance, far more interesting than perfect timing.
Super job. Saw him a couple of months ago in Dublin. So sad to see him wheeled on stage in a wheelchair after he lost his leg. But I'm happy to report he was in great form and interacted with the audience as only he can, and was playing at his best again.
To the three people who ''disliked'' this, may I suggest that your not smokin the right stuff. This is a top bloke with an extensive catalogue of quality music. I just feel sorry for everyone who hasn't had the opportunity to hear John.
Just beautiful. There was very little of John's material available here (Australia), they had blocked many artists until just recently, lovely to have it back. Thanks for this gem.
John Martyn is a true music icon! Oh.. and he likes a drink. Seen him twice, 1st time he was on crutches, 2nd time in a wheelchair, probabley turn up in a coffin next time. Legend!
I just meant that the first couple of words of the song don't seem to have been picked up by the mic, but that's probably just because they're sung quietly. Cheers for posting this - quality stuff from JM at the peak of his powers. Any more rare JM video would be greatly appreciated!
May He Rest in Peace as Valiant a Man as ever left Home.... He was Spencer the Rover!!......Bereft is not the Word I am feeling .........Go to Sleep, John & take our good Wishes to the Grave......... Doug Reid
thanks for this waggonerslad, lovely stuff. he toured canada couple times during this period and i saw him in toronto, fabulous ! lotta echoplex. you mean i can buy this on dvd? yikes! the word of gord
@PatrickandPlanB I wouldn't worry too much because there are plenty of talented artists around today. Martyn was wonderful for many reasons, and good guitarists - like J. Page - would doubtless agree with that!
hey lads, been trying to learn this one, was wondering if anyone could give me a tip on the tuning of it? browsed the internet and cant seem to find a proper answer
anyone got the chords he is playing down with the DADGAD capo 2nd tuning ye guys are talking about? can kind of get but i cant see exactly what chord it is, im not all that great. cheers =D
It strikes me that the only place he was ever happy was on stage with his guitar and a pint of Bass. May he find his way to the celestial pub where they have an endless supply of ale and are in desperate need of someone with a guitar.
+rick heddle......this is very late (and may well have been answered) but I'm hoping you still check John's great music. Joni played strange chords because her hands/fingers were left weakened from Polio she contracted as a girl, only way she could compensate.
@Waggonerslad Is there anymore of this performance or is it just the two songs? I'd love to hear more as I think its some of John's strongest live stuff
Thumbs up if this is not your first time here.
Impressive every time

Watch this video at least once a day. Thankful for who uploaded it and hope his work is appreciated until this planet explodes. Grateful ✌🏾
I dream of being able to play an acoustic guitar as well as John Martyn!
That makes two of us!😊
With John and Nick Drake...my young musical adulthood was shaped
To John
"Bless the weather that brought you to me, curse the storm that takes you away"
RIP
Who on earth dislikes this! Another great performance from a true musical genius.

that vocal is unreal.... his soul is in his voice.
Known his music for more than 50 years now.... Always good to revisit.
i was exactly one week old when this was filmed. John was 29, now i'm 30 and i love the man.
pretty much speechless...whatever personal torments he's gone through to result in current physical state is his business...of course we wish the BEST but at least his LOVE for music is unwaivering!...

A lifetime of such amazing music has been my greatest gift
Gutted. I didn't know personally but I'm crying like I lost my brother. Thanks for all you gave us. Rest in peace my friend.
Rest in peace John. Your music is a big part of my life. May you always be remembered forever.
All I can say is genius! One underated man.

Followed John all my musical like. Ageless and timeless
Like a fine wine these performances seem to get even better over time.
This is an exceptional performance by any standard or measure

At his peak, the greatest
I miss your passion and joy, John. Lovely guitar introduction, and smile. LOVE YOU!
More young'uns need to find out about John Martyn - oldies do your duty!!
cacaovanhouten As a fifteen year old I feel like John Martyn should be a close to heart kept secret of ‘real’ music lovers:)

Much love JM.
This sounds so freaking NEW!!!
What does he do to his nails to make them survive that???
Legend ❤
Dude. He started in CGCFGC and capoed it up to DADGAD.
@grif04 Yes, he is playing a C minor curve chord. Have you not played that often?
Maestro
Johnny so good.
Just toys with that guitar!!!!
If anyone knows of somewhere I can find tab for these acoustic pieces I'd love to know - thanks for sharing.
@PatrickandPlanB I wouldn't worry too much because there are plenty of talented artists around today. Martyn was wonderful for many reasons, and good guitarists - like J. Page - would doubtless agree with that!
Me I respect him so much ; not understanding the song before! ( RUclips List)
Anyone know the tuning for this song? Been experimenting with alternative tuning ALOT recently and would love to know.
hey lads, been trying to learn this one, was wondering if anyone could give me a tip on the tuning of it? browsed the internet and cant seem to find a proper answer
@Waggonerslad Cheers for that man, seems to work. Sorry for the late reply but I havn't been able to get onto my youtube account recently.
Who the fuck would dislike this?
He resides in Ireland, actually.
@guinnesstrail Use to heard him in the 70th in London with Beverley Great sound
Sergio
@Waggonerslad Thanks
Does anyone know the guitar model he's playing? Love J Martyn Thanks...
anyone got the chords he is playing down with the DADGAD capo 2nd tuning ye guys are talking about? can kind of get but i cant see exactly what chord it is, im not all that great. cheers =D
@guinnesstrail i reckon if there is a pub in heaven it will be packed with guitarists. to them/us its the nearest thing to an office.
It strikes me that the only place he was ever happy was on stage with his guitar and a pint of Bass. May he find his way to the celestial pub where they have an endless supply of ale and are in desperate need of someone with a guitar.
Young one who found about JM, and proud of it. B)
I can't believe I didn't see this earlier! Thank YOU so much for posting. Have you thought of giving it a go yourself?
cheers
julie
we are not worthy

@BlackHole2005 It's probably his own, kind of like those absurd chords that Joni Mitchell plays. I use a capo and hope for the best!
play and sing like this...
The man is from Glasgow ...
Resides in Chicago ...
Cant say no mo ...
