already on it my friend. been devouring his music, watching the documentaries. we're still spreading the gospel, don't you worry. The likes of Nick Drake, Jake Holmes and Davy Graham, too.
I'm 26, feel like it's criminal that johns music isn't celebrated, I was bought up with some awful pop music, and for younger people it's even worse, I just hope they discover the lover!
Defintely.. I'm a 49 years old musician, I've been litterally absorbing any music that sounded nice to my ears, but, shame on me, even if I can recall a picture of John in my favourite guitar book, my bible whean I was a teen ager, I've just discovered his music. Here's where it all started
Yessss!!! I found john in the 90s.. He is the connection from the 70s to beyond... his stage presence, lyrics, uniqueness, vulnerability, just shows we are all human.. Grateful i got a glimpse of HIM in this vast expanse of time we have! Enjoy! ❤
I remember watching this on tv way back 1978 when it came out. I was a punk at the time and was thinking, who this old geezer. it was supposed to be the Strangers. On Rock goes to college tonight. Little did I know that year’s later I’d become a massive fan of John Martyn. Was lucky enough to have seen him play live loads of times before he tragically died. Absolute legend. Miss him loads.
I was born in the Royal Berks in Reading on 20th october, 1978. I know it’s silly but I like the fact I was only a couple of miles away when John performed this.
I remember that I taped this from the TV onto cassette (yep, the old sat in front of the TV with me holding he microphone to the tv speaker, 70's stylee) and then playing that on my wee mono cassette player in my bedroom all the time.
May You Never was an 'our song' someone who I loved and lost (good reason) but I never stopped loving. Sadly he died last year, his funeral was in Ireland and I couldn't go because of Covid, but 'May You Never' was played at the funeral.
Too late for the young to see one of the greatest singer song writers of all time. Never mind, you have to make do with archives. 'Music to shag to' Now in my sixties,I saw him many times. The last time in Oxford, in a wheelchair, leg missing, Grace and Danger tour. He died six months later, but his music is timeless.
I am now in my 60s too, it’s not to late for them to re discover him they just need to find him, and I hope they do, as he was one of the greatest innovators of music ever, his style of music will never be repeated, what a loss, I cry, literally for these years without him, I can say I saw him live a few times, it was what you see here and hear, exactly the same on vinyl record or digital or live, i for one miss his him and his character greatly, what a loss.
Being introduced to this bloke late one night a few years ago listening to Radio 2 was a seminal moment in my musical appreciation and development. His music is so soulful, it's almost transcendental. Amazing.
Andy Northall haha. Awesome comment and 100% true. The version with Dave Gilmore strumming in the background is a good one.. all that gig was excellent, starting with the best live John Wayne Ive heard. My all time favourite - Go down easy, shame it’s short.
The man was a genius, when you think of the equipment he had at the time. His loop machine was a couple feet of magnetic tape going round in circles. Such a great loss to us all. R.I.P. John
Saw him 6 or 7 times in concert. You never knew quite which John you were going to get; the pissed-up brawler, challenging the whole front row to a fight, or the blissed-out gentle giant. The music was never less than stunning.
I saw him a few times when I was living in Scotland. Always small crowds of 200 or less. One of the greatest musicians of the seventies just laid lowish.
Thank you for posting this. I have seen the concert from Stirling University but never this one. John certainly was the passionate, charismatic live character wasn't he? I think he was one of the best live acts ever! R.I.P. John.
This is how I remember John - saw him only a month later on 12th November '78 at the Southampton Civic Centre; I seem to remember he drank more on that night than here (but there were no cameras, recording or Pete Drummond at that one!) . But, my goodness, could this guy play guitar and sing - just wonderful live, as he is here.
Very good with his guitar abilities. Reminds me vocally of Joni Mitchell. Seemed like a friendly soul. I read an article where Phil Collins recalled some times he had with John in the earlier years. When Phil moved to Switzerland, John rang him and asked if he could visit him and record some stuff together. Phil said a big No because he said he would come but never go. Haha
Does anybody remember seeing him at Goldsmiths College? It must have been sometime in the mid-seventies. Fantastic concert, he filled the hall with his magical music!
Above the value of money beyond the use of megre words i get it whatever you meant to relay but i aint sure words are sufficient to portray what i'm talking about but your music goes so far into eternity to be more than ample i can only hope your suffering for your art was John not a conosoure of what it takes to know where you were musicaly i knew enough to know the value in understaning if who i am ...and in that you knew me so well in your album Bless The Weather for me acousticaly unsurpassed and anyway if it can ever be i dont want to know i find so much value in you and your story John we cant be all that difffrrent except how gifted you are in so many ways i would of wished to sit with you on a remote sofa and with my autism read your mind...Mark ZePRODUCTIONs a complete work of imagination of myself a schitzophrenic who actualy think its the people without a thouht in their heads thats the problem because they never feckin think or they would had treat you so much kinder ...i love you John
You can't argue that he wasn't an obnoxious ass a lot of the time, the patter on Live At Leeds between him and Danny Thompson is painful by todays standards. But you also couldn't help but love the guy. I cried the day he died, and Danny Baker did him proud on the radio. A couple that knew John used to come into the HMV i worked in Belfast. They brought us copies of On The Cobbles (John just said give them away). I had a couple of chances to see him play Belfast in 00s. "I'll go next time...". Duh.
An outstanding concert. I recorded the show’s soundtrack onto an audio cassette back in 1978 - a much treasured tape - but haven't seen the video since that time. Didn't John Martyn stand in at the last minute for a missing-in-action Frankie Miller?
wow he was some player. just learning a few of these, the weird tunings and shapes. the system doesn't allow him to be played now prob see as too irreverent to the control circus
Back in the late 90's Congress passed the Telecommunications Reformation Act that basically took away the option for radio stations to play what they choose and now have to abide by what they're told to play and not play...there is no respect for the art of music anymore - it's all about what's gonna make the rich richer.

There's a generation that needs to rediscover this guy.
Dont worry bro I'm bringing him back

Aahh yes. I remember The Strangers. Great combo.
Wow.. lucky you.. x He is the connection we need!
Thank you x
U2's Edge owes John Martyn a nod of acknowledgement.

Liquid soul, beautiful voice and playing, like no other!

If it wasn’t for this man I would be so behind where I am now musically. A genius.
That version of One World should be sent into space, a universal hymn to humanity.

You got a point there Andy.
@@theoriginalmrwolf2316 Is that the 1990 Shaw Theatre one?
Definitely… Well said @34hedgehog :)
Certain Surprise' one of my favorite songs of all time. thank you, John.
A few songs here like, one day without you, are timeless gems that cannot be toppled or remade.
Touching multiple genres.... way ahead of his time
Definitely
Saw him in a Glasgow folk club 1967 or 68. He was pretty young and amazing.
The man was a genius, when you think of the equipment he had at the time. His loop machine was a couple feet of magnetic tape going round in circles. Such a great loss to us all. R.I.P. John
JM is my favorite songwriter, singer and guitarist package. Amazing at every level!
Agreed! Ive only just recently discovered him and im hooked 😉
One of my biggest regrets is that I have never managed to see him live. He truly was great and he is badly missed. RIP John :)

Playing with Danny Thompson he was amazing- saw him many times in the 70s mainly at Essex University
Never forget, friends: John's in heaven now, and you don't have to wonder what he's up to.
Remember this on the TV. My first introduction to the man.

I was at the Stirling gig too..my name is Phil(pip)garnier ??? sitting at the back
Praise God for this upload
Tim Amen to that!!!
All with just a guitar echoplex and Big Muff. What an artist.
This is a wonderful piece of film, from John in his prime.
Another time listening to this master. So amazing!

PURE MUSICAL TALENT,R.I.P.JOHN
One of the most underrated artists ever.
Beautiful music - real soul and what a creative guitarist
We never had entertainment like that at uni just 20 years later. You jammy sods.
Thank you Mr.Martyn 🙌🙌

thank you so much for posting this Mr Dips. xxx much love to you.
How good is he! R.I.P., John.
Cheers to whoever put this up. How joyous to hear something so beautiful and perfect. (I am not J, I am his mother)

John, INDIMENTICABILE !
They don't make 'em like that anymore.
the master of the echoplex
fuck me...blown away
3:58 Does he often start One World with just a few chords from Small Hours?
Clearly not the same chords. You're getting confused by the sound of the echoplex. Close your eyes an see the difference.
He certainly starts Dealer with a piece from Outside In
He’d just get cancelled. I’m a 52 woman guitarist since 13 y/o. and I love him so much.
A Prince among men. A shit. A genius. But so music'ly in touch with our soul's. 🎸🥁🎶✌️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏✌️
Always tried to copy his percussive playing back in the 70's, never managed it, still can't now!
31st october 1978 i was born
Genius
Big Muff blew me away.
This would sound so much better if it were autotuned, don't you think?
Only kidding. Thank goodness it wasn't around in the 70s.
10:18 hahaha, i love how no one got that.
+Dr. H i got it haha bit of cockney C***

I have his albums. How sad was his decline. Booze and drugs.
