Late 60's I was going out with this guy called John Lewis, who later changed his name to Jona Lewie. He was at that time in a band called Brett Marvin and The Thunderbolts. We had been to a gig in Manchester and were on the train back to London after the gig. It was a corridor train, remember them? We were sitting in a carriage on our own and could hear someone playing a guitar and singing so we went to investigate. It was John Martyn and an American friend. John was just starting out at that time ... playing at folk clubs etc., We stayed with them for the duration and got invited back to Johns pad afterwards which was in a Mews in W. London. We stayed there till the early hours .. playing and singing. That was a night to remember. Jona Lewie is still a friend of mine, we've been friends for 53 years ... OMG ... that makes me feel old !!!

Sunday lunchtime on the pyramid stage at Glastonbury every year through the 80's he would play,we would lie on the grass, the night's psychedelics wearing off and let him take us away to another place with his beautiful music. He used his honeyed voice as an instrument,a wonderful guitarist we may never see the like of again. He is much missed and forever in our hearts.

I first saw him at the Irish centre in Birmingham Digbeth back in the late 80s , i had not long left school , i found a seat amongst a diverse crowd from hippies to men in suits , he came on to a huge roar , looked into the front row spotting a chap with a freshly lit spliff , he pinched it and smoked it and gave an amazing performance . my last chance to see him was at the Colston Hall Bristol , i still have the unused ticket as i put my back out at work and couldnt walk , thankfully his work will live longer than me and many more people will have an emotional ride listening to his wonderful songs .

    • @eekamoose

I have a story to match that. I saw him at Bradford University in about 1984. He came on stage armed with a large spliff, took a toke and passed it down into the audience. I was lucky enough to be closest so I took it from him. I took a toke and passed it on to the next person. I spent the rest of the night utterly, utterly wrecked on that one toke. I've no idea how JM managed to play the guitar and sing, I could hardly stand up...
      Happy memories...

Mesmeric talent, uneasy stage presence, and an accent that switched easily and confusingly between Glaswegian and Home Counties... the enigma that was the tortured and poetic John Martyn. Rest easily old chap; peace at last.

  • @SOUNDsculptures
    @SOUNDsculptures 4 года назад +10

Martyn's phasing and strong vocal melodies were way ahead of the time... there was nothing else during this period that sounded like this. His sound is more in keeping with the vocal styles of the late 80's and early 90's, acts like P. M. Dawn, Sade, Seal.

Hi Randy I saw him at least twice. I was going to see him after her got out of prison in 1980 supporting the Genesis reunion gig with Peter Gabriel but the coach was late, I could now cry as at the time i was not aware of him. Came to love him. I remember being a bit stoned as he was and walking back from the bar and he was doing an acoustic set I was spellbound I felt that my existence was held in the palm of his hand. If you like him might I suggest Roy Harper as great a genius and just wonderful, start with Stormcock the album.

Not a lot pains me more in my life than not ever being old enough to see this musical genius of a man perform live - what an experience that must have been. I've heard some bad stories of course, my aunty went to see him in Scotland and he was lifted and dragged onto the stage due to his condition before being dragged back off, too pissed to play. However, when he had it together, and would produce such performances as this (and for example his whole set in Dublin in 1987 or the Live at Leeds album) there can't have been many better musical experiences in the world. Sleep tight John, utter legend.

GREAT!!!! Wish I had seen Him playin live. I first came across John Martyn. I was driving home from a gig I had been playing drums on. It was a very good gig. I don't normally listen to the music radio after playing a gig. Music overload. That night. It was raining. Turnec on the radio. Don't know what station. And the voice and giitar playing came out. After a few bars. I had to pull over and stop the car and listen. It was one of the best this I had every listened to.
Would like to have played drums for Him.

    Lyrics
    One day without you
And I feel just like I'm somebody else
    One day without you
And there's a fear there might be somebody else
You know, I'd like to keep you
Keep you to myself and by my side
You know, I'd like to keep you
Just like I know it's wrong to try
Just like my baby is born to cry
Every bird that sings is born to fly
    One day without you
And I feel just like some lost ship at sea
    One day without you
And every friend I meet seems strange
You know that I'd like to keep you
Keep you to myself and by my side
You know I'd like to keep you
Just like I know it's wrong to try
Just like my baby is born to cry
Every bird that sings is born to fly
    One day without you
I feel a hole just where my heart should be
    One day without you
And I feel just how sad my life could be
You know I'd like to keep you
Keep you to myself, keep by my side
You know I'd like to keep you
Just like I know it's wrong to try
Just like my baby is born to cry
Every bird that sings deserves to fly

This is so wonderful - I saw him live when I was at University but am still exploring some of his music. Didn't know this one before.

I love these video's. It's palpable!!! John's dive into drug and alcohol addiction, but he can still, make you feel the music!!

Thank you for posting. This is John at his best. What a surprise to see this concert on video, my girlfriend and I are sitting in the audience at the front! The Stranglers got dropped by the BBC. JM was drafted at short notice. His A&R tipped us off. I took a bottle of red wine for John to say thanks and bought him a rum and blackcurrent in the SU Bar afterwards he was nice to us. The Musicman amp was a gift from Eric Clapton through a quad PA. The Echoplex and voice was magical. RIP John.

Saw John a good few times back in Cardiff when he was up and coming. Brilliant guy who drank a few bears in the Woodville before going down the road to the Uni. to play. Had a pint with him often(ish). Lucky to have heard him live. Memories will never fade.

I knew John when he lived in Hampstead with Beverly. His Southern accent was a necessity for him to be understood. After a few pints he reverted to unintelligible Glasgie. Back then you had to speak in Southern RP to get anywhere, there were no regional accents on the beeb like today.
