Listening to this, the echoplex piece at the end, I could still be there, sat on the Uni hall floor, pint of Mitchells in a plastic glass, a joint, MJ smoke all over completely surrounding John. The place completely quiet, *everyone* totally transported by this music, maybe to the same place everyone is when they listen to this now. I open my eyes, music stops. Take me back, back to 1975.
I'm kind of obsessed with John and his performances there's such a mystique to his whole routine, the acoustic guitar pickups and wires often gaffer taped to the top of the guitar, alternate tunings with effects not seen in this era. Just Amazing!
Brian Wyse he was just being himself and that’s all we can ask for in an artist, but his music made it all make sense. That contrast between the facade and the reveal is beautiful
The mics are AKG C451 condensers with a CK5 capsule screwed onto the end of a VR1 extender tube. The BBC had acquired a large number of these kits from AKG in the early 1970s, and you often see them used on BBC2 music programs of this period.
Thank you man - honestly have been searching for what the mics where around this time period for ages - they looked so cheap and flimsy, yet rendered such amazing detail; they were also so unintrusive to the performer. As you can imagine without the knowledge that there is a microphone and extension unit involved, google didn't show anything. The question I was searching for for the best part of 2 years was finally answered 9 years ago!
Back in the early 70s I got an album by America. There was a song called Head and Heart. Written by John Martyn. Had never heard of him. Almost 50 years later I still love his marvelous beautiful songs. Miss him.
Love you John. you are missed here but you left us a feast of great music. Whispering Bob we love u too. an inspiration to all facing bowel cancer. it can be overcome if found early enough. so happy you did. god bless n keep yall x
Simply, Profoundly, and Ethereally Brilliant! John's Unique Tuning, Majestic Gaelic Voicing, Magnificence on the Martin D-28, and his use of Effects, Ground Breaking!...Peace!
Now I'm a guitarist as my profile pic shows lol but how did he do this magic absolutely off his nut lol. I can't string 3 chords after a session on booze lol 😂😂😂. John Martyn legend and musical pioneer. R.I.P good sir.
Yeah that was the thing about him - he could be blasted clear outta his head and still play and sing like that... freaking amazing - I'm the same as you - I can hardly keep it together on simple strumming let alone perform the miracles he did 🔥☯️🔥
@gaspanda I saw this when it was first broadcast in Spring 75 :-) John had just played 'One Day Without You', and is tuning up from the standard tuning pattern four semitones below normal he used for that number. The magic button that 'Bomber Harris' gets to press is the power ON switch of a Maestro PS-1 Phase Shifter wired ahead of the Echoplex EP-3 in the FX loop.
If you listen carefully he’s tuning from One day without you (CFBbEbGC) to Discover the lover (AGAEGC) you can do this retune will him on your guitar for a fascinating music lesson. enjoy
Absolutely bleedin brilliant-I been waiting for this one...and we also get the tuning up too-great stuff for tuning/guitar afficianados...Most, most grateful for this one -always wanted to see him playing this-it must be the only video officially ever made of this. 5* like candy from a baby...
John Martyn At The BBC is an excellent dvd. But It could have been one of the greatest collections of all time when I see some of the stuff on RUclips that didn't get on that dvd.
This was on bbc4 guitar heroes recently and this was the track that had most resonance for me. Just love the FX section from 4.10, and the helping hand to get there - does a performance get much better than this!
my favoutie artist of all time, didn't give a shit what ppl thought did it his way, amazing guitarist i listen to a john martyr song every day my 3 year old loves him too he sleeps to solid air, go down easy and in the evening 3 beautiful songs. i wish i saw him live
I've always felt that the way the last verse repeats the first is so poignant. We hear how Spencer struggles and feels the need to escape, yet guilt brings him back home. He gets great pleasure from returning, and similarly everyone get great pleasure from his return. He's content now, and believes he'll never leave again. However, the original verse comes back around. Spencer is reduced once again. Nothing is solved.
You really are a sad twat, what's Bob ever done to make you hate him so? Unlike a lot of other DJ's, Bob genuinely loves the music and the people who play it, he ain't there for the celebrity shit.
From the BBC2 Whistle Test broadcast on Friday 17th January1975. The other song John played that night was 'One Day (Without You)'. This one seems to have two alternative titles : here John calls it 'Discover The Lover' but I've seen both titles used in different places.
I think TheGuitarMan means "Sunday's child", who is "fair of face", according to the old folk rhyme. Apostrophes are a mystery to so many people. I wonder why.
JM was born in Beechcroft Avenue, New Malden, Surrey, but lived most of his early life at 10 Tantallon Road, Shawlands, Glasgow. Donovan was born in St.Vincent Street, in Glasgow.

Lucky bugger. Respect.
Wish I'd been alive and living right around then. Better experiences, better self-esteem
Had a fight with John Martyn in a bar in '92. Didn't stop me loving his music and talent. A massive influence on my songwriting. Have a listen.
Deberías haberle dado dos ostias!! Es idiota!! Una canción suya en una película de los 70 se oye y sube exponencialmente el precio,
John Martyn: one of the only people to ever live who could make tuning a guitar sound beautiful.
james blackshaw retuning a 12-string in a weird tuning by ear is also very entertaining
Don't forget about Nick Drake. Happy New year.
Amen
Hard to mention nick drake without Jackson c Frank
Joni Mitchell's entire discography bro
I'm kind of obsessed with John and his performances there's such a mystique to his whole routine, the acoustic guitar pickups and wires often gaffer taped to the top of the guitar, alternate tunings with effects not seen in this era. Just Amazing!
Have to listen to more, first time I heard his music! 😊
@charleneelovitz3738 I'm nearly envious of you. You're discovering John Martyn for the first time.
@@charlene.elovitzChannelYTplease do… he is the most underrated songwriter besides Chris Whitley… true innovative genius
Just a man, a guitar and more emotion than an entire generation of musicians put together
Spot on
Still spot on… I’m on the younger side born in the 90s…. No one even comes close to making me feel the way martyn has, a true underrated genius
I love how he can lurch from being so jokey to so wrapped up in playing beautiful music. A singular talent.
Peeled Apples his jokes are shit, but the rest saves him well
@@brianwyse5810 no, i like his jokes; music is the area he's able to talk seriously in
Brian Wyse he was just being himself and that’s all we can ask for in an artist, but his music made it all make sense. That contrast between the facade and the reveal is beautiful

I know they are from the sixties but in Let It Be and the other films of the Fabs the same (looking) mics show up.
Back in the early 70s I got an album by America. There was a song called Head and Heart. Written by John Martyn. Had never heard of him. Almost 50 years later I still love his marvelous beautiful songs. Miss him.
Autumn 2021 . Still listening . John , remains the boss man .
Christmas 2023 . This was the first time I had heard or seen him. Sold
After all these years….he’s still the greatest…it takes you to such a beautiful place…
RUclips should have six stars for John
Update: two thumb ups ;)
Fuckin awesome, this guy was a god, I miss him so much.
It's out of this world. Something no artist I know is close to.
Love you John. you are missed here but you left us a feast of great music. Whispering Bob we love u too. an inspiration to all facing bowel cancer. it can be overcome if found early enough. so happy you did. god bless n keep yall x
Such a sublime talent. I saw John at the Half Moon in Putney in '79 for 50p, just transcendent and beautiful.
The best music lesson you will ever have.
That was indeed the very fine music of John Martyn. Like Bob said.
melted chocolate.....just oozing melting chocolate! the only way to describe this man's voice
Bob Harris is a very nice bloke.
Simply, Profoundly, and Ethereally Brilliant! John's Unique Tuning, Majestic Gaelic Voicing, Magnificence on the Martin D-28, and his use of Effects, Ground Breaking!...Peace!
Hi James, Stellar Performance!
James, I'm moved in and up and running! Yea!
A thoroughly wrung out man...thanks for your kind words....!
Saw this on BBC4 last night, liked this from the off then lost my shit when Harris hit that magic button! (tape echo I'm guessing)
Boss man 🦅☠️🦅

Back again, listening to 1.00 to 4.00 and repeat for about half an hour. Genius. Why hasn't somebody covered this tune?
Because nobody else could do it justice.
What a performance. I'm new to John Martyn. The man's a legend.
Re-reading the excellent John Martyn biography "Some People Are Crazy"...highly recommended!
Didn't know 'bout that - will check it out - thanks for a 'worthwhile ' you tube post - a very rare thing : )
Read that a few months ago. Great book
@gaspanda I saw this when it was first broadcast in Spring 75 :-)

Such a unique sound he gets out of that loop system at the end, sounds proper haunting
2 legends! Whispering Bob introduced me to so many great artists in my formative years.
I remember the old grey whistle test, think it was on late at night, i was only 11 in 1975! Oh how the years fly! 😢
Hard to believe this is nearly 50 years old. Love this song and many others he wrote.
Absolutely bleedin brilliant-I been waiting for this one...and we also get the tuning up too-great stuff for tuning/guitar afficianados...Most, most grateful for this one -always wanted to see him playing this-it must be the only video officially ever made of this. 5* like candy from a baby...
My mum used to do heroin with him. He was top banana. She's still alive thank God.
Fuck, lad.
Knobhead
As Punks said - no future in that. Glad she came through. Sorry he died too soon. Hope your Mum still going strong Drugs - class As - are boring. x
Truly beautiful song that kept me transfixed during many an evening in my adolescent years. Perfect choice.
John Martyn At The BBC is an excellent dvd. But It could have been one of the greatest collections of all time when I see some of the stuff on RUclips that didn't get on that dvd.
my love and prayers go to john and his close people .xxxxxxxxxx
Pure bliss
WHAT A MAN!!! Funny, talented and most importantly soulful. One of the best.
That harmonic at 1:17
Im in musical love ! Thanks john martyn. Rip x

I'm speechless; never expected to see this! Straight to my favorites! THANK YOU for posting!

Enchanting as always big man
From the heart to the heart.
@schnugglepup1
He was also an Honorary Scotsman.
Loved by all.
Music transcends.
tuning for this version: (not a guess)
tuning all strings down
E to A
A to G
D to A
G to E
B to G
E to C
Well played, sir.
Thanks!
Yes and at first hes tuned for One day without you (CFBbEbGC) then retunes to play Discover the lover
(AGAEGC)
Am I the only one to have applauded?
Amazing
For years I heard and watched Ben Howard mention his influence of this guy. I fully understand now
Simply brilliant.
Quiero llorar!!! Que hermosa canción!
Just listening stunned again.
Lovely to see this after sooooooo many years! I can't understand why the BBC didn't put this session on the DVD they released of John Martyn?!
even while hes tuning its great haha
Bob just staring at em...crazy them days...JM lol

Totally brilliant, JM was the man, but I can't help but think that Whisperin' Bob looked a lot like a Sloth as he waited for JM to tune up!
You really are a sad twat, what's Bob ever done to make you hate him so?
Unlike a lot of other DJ's, Bob genuinely loves the music and the people who play it, he ain't there for the celebrity shit.
just stunning ..
This is tuned two tones low C F Bb Eb G C but still standard intervals
That’s only for one day without you then he retunes to AGAEGC

From the album "Sunday's Child" it opened with "One Day Without You" and it closed with "You Can Discover."
Sublime.
Loveliness x
fucking love this
wow I can't do that.
Tuning his pint of cider was musical.
Wow!
I think TheGuitarMan means "Sunday's child", who is "fair of face", according to the old folk rhyme. Apostrophes are a mystery to so many people. I wonder why.
Class
❤️
My dad and charlie are now with you. Catch up with you guys later.
I think he's using an early tape based sound effects system that is probably related to the digital delay systems of today.
That's an Echoplex.
ohhhh to play music and i can do this just sing with that voice. xxxxxxxx
🤩🤩🤩🤩
Top A - shhhhh naysayers x
@Youreabellsniff It's AGAEGC maybe a bit flat from that.
I cover this on uTube in standard tuning, somehow
Can anybody tell me where JM and Donavan were born . City and place in the city . So a 2 part question guys
JM was born in Beechcroft Avenue, New Malden, Surrey, but lived most of his early life at 10 Tantallon Road, Shawlands, Glasgow. Donovan was born in St.Vincent Street, in Glasgow.
I do tend to read people wrong, must just have caught him on a bad day. Everyone I have ever spoken to says he is a good guy so I must be wrong
Okay
Think He Invented The Delay Machine
Great!
But what did he said in the beggining before tuning is guitar ?
Seems weird...
Anyone know what effects box Bob Harris turns on for him, also what tuning the songs in?
Bob turned on an Echoplex !
There’s a maestro ps-1a phase shifter to the left on top of the amp as well visible at 0:55 and actually pointed at by John
Slick shit huh!!!
Sorry about the sweatshirt John but we're all good now... ;)
Well looks like my dad is with you now. Have fun :)
Is there anywhere you can purchase this version?
He got his accent off Dudley Moore.
they could perhaps be geezers from bolton
Im from Bolton haha, though i did not dislike!
Best to shut up, JM has obviously been drinking, what chance a mere presenter!!! Ban Alcohol, Smoking and drugs. Art and life suffers, love you all!!
What was the tuning?
So much less to protest about then and so much more protesting about. What happened?
Sorry, liked JM a lot, thought Bob Harris was an odius person! Agree about avoiding the hard stuff though.
Makes for a great MDMA tune with the girlfriend x Peace
