From Transatlantic Sessions series 2 (1998) song: Bobby Charles bass: Danny Thompson weissenborn: Jerry Douglas mandolin: Russ Bareneberg percussion: Tommy Hayes
Had a bar room fight with John Martyn in '92 . Didn't stop me appreciating his incredible talent. Influenced my music writing and playing. Have a listen.
I never saw him live but have been a fan of his music for over 40 years. I go through fazes of liking different music and artists but I have never grown tired of John's singing and playing
Saw him 7 or 8 times. Every time different (weirdly so on the Grace and Danger tour ... the only one that left me indifferent). But yeah, the same. He is one of the few musical constants in my life.
Excellent ! Been a fan of John Martyn for a very long time , first time I've seen this everybody in the band superb especially Eddi Reader who i last saw at Jack Bruce goodbye in London .
Must have seen JM. Live at least 10 times. Sometimes unfogetably brill. Sometimes wrecked and terrible! But always his own Man! Loved him Gbnf. Best live act ever!! Xx
I absolutely love this. All the musicians are fantastic. It creates such an immediate atmosphere and that's a quality that only incredibly talented musicians and singers can achieve.
i miss john boy, his music can uplift me and also bring a tear to my eye, hes one of my heroes and he wont be forgoten, he is a true legend most people hear about him through word of mouth thats a true legend and musician to me, thanks for sharing this music with us my friends
Saw him live once. In a tiny venue, I was effectively sitting right next to him: there was no stage to speak of. He was, of course, "fashionably" late to come out, but, man, what a night.
a reply to 'edenic' genius breeds madness and spills out into the world in all manners. maybe the legend that is John Martyn felt that alcohol was the only way he could avoid the madness of his genius and still be able to give us the beauty of his music. peace.
I agree, I have followed JM for many years as well. I great performer. let's hope that there is more to come, I lone Eddi's voice too, what a great combination.
it is helpful to understand that real musicians play what it occurs to them to play...in the way we mere mortals respond in ordinary conversation I doubt any of the participants were troubled by that performance
Love the man and his music , love this version but the more I listen the more I suspect that she got all the whisky , in a nice golden glow kind of way .
Where did this come from? Been listening to JM for nigh on half a century and this is the first time i've heard this. Absolutely marvellous. Great musicians, stunning, soul-drenched atmosphere and all topped off by the delightful Ms Reader. Had no idea they'd ever worked together. A winning combination
This performance is from a television show called ‘Transatlantic Sessions’. There have been quite a few seasons / series but i am not sure what series this song was performed on. I think it might be series 2.
@Vickijayce you are so so so right. john and danny could seldom do any wrong in my view but eddi reader's fabulous purity and tone are a joy on this track. pam
I really can't remember how I stumbled on to these trans Atlantic sessions but its really sad that there is so much more great music out there that I must be missing
She's dancing. Notice the last bit--she has one hand up, replaces it with the other, and then the vocal goes down to the fifth, and the first hand comes down to reflect it.
As original poster, well aware there’s no E in the Scottish spelling of whisky. But as the tune was written by a US person (under title All the Money) guessing the TS video editors respectfully stuck to how he’d have spelled/spelt it. Merry Xmas. ruclips.net/video/LjVUEy_xn9g/видео.html
john does start this song with "shes got all the ..." wether its a nod or a dig at reader its up to you to decide read richadichard comment bout ten before then make up your mind bless this stormy weather
@SuperDidgeman never noticed her as much till you pointed it out... now I cant stop looking over there. Her voice is sufficient, she's a peculiar bird :-)
@LizAndyMovieWatcher It's on Johns album Church With One Bell, cracking album of covers by him, no Eddie on that but that may be seen as a blessing by some.
Eddi and John really shine singing together…Brilliant! 👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿
Fear not, John. You got all the music. Rest in song!
Nice one, H.
Amen!
I have no words for my love for this man and his music. So oustanding ...so deep...

Eddi instinctively feels for the right vibe, and with Johns vocal just nails the songs deep hypnotic pull on the senses.
Great video! Love Eddi Reader's vocal work!
She's amazing! Conjures up and Middle Eastern feel, as she does in Fairground Attraction...she sounds just like the old gypsy lady.
It takes real talent to upstage John Martyn. She is glorious in this.
I absolutely love this. All the musicians are fantastic. It creates such an immediate atmosphere and that's a quality that only incredibly talented musicians and singers can achieve.

Love this. Eddi's wonderful. John is magnificent 🥰
Somehow, this music sounds very different from any other I have been listening to. I love its maturity.
Saw him live once. In a tiny venue, I was effectively sitting right next to him: there was no stage to speak of. He was, of course, "fashionably" late to come out, but, man, what a night.

Eddi is a Banshee...hauntingly beautiful....
Two of my favorite performers I wished I could have seen a live show.I did manage to see Johns last show at the Albert Hall.
Its a professional singer visualising her sound, that's what all the arm waving is about.
I agree, I have followed JM for many years as well. I great performer. let's hope that there is more to come, I lone Eddi's voice too, what a great combination.
Thank you john and eddi amazing amazing
Cry if you dont like this. Your life is incomplete.
Better than superb. Hypnotic and moving.
I sometimes wonder if John Martyn was born in a barrel of a Speyside finest. Fucking ace voice.
Great song, great man.
it is helpful to understand that real musicians play what it occurs to them to play...in the way we mere mortals respond in ordinary conversation
I doubt any of the participants were troubled by that performance
Sublime.
Love the sly little look from Danny T when John sings 'Now he's got religion'. And I love Eddie Reader ion this, she's right in the zone.
John Martyn's countdown is a new standard.
He sure had the best whisky.
