- John was drinking in the Lord Nelson with the fishermen when, after a few drinks, they talked him into playing on the beach. He played all afternoon for free, and went round with a wellington boot collecting money for local charities. This is a great track from that afternoon called 'Big Muff'
😍 love it.
I wonder how many watching knew they were in the presence of a living legend.
RIP John Martyn ❤
What an unbelievable talent.
Bad John wot a music mannnn❤❤❤❤❤
Fucken legend performance. He looks like the sort of person would have been in the thick of the Battle of Hastings. I propose that John Martyn should be retrospectively stitched into the Bayeaux Tapestry.....
Had a bar room fight with John Martyn the following year (he lost his temper!) Still had a big influence on my singing/ songwriting. Click and have a listen.
Ever grateful that you recorded these. A big thanks from near Amsterdam. Has been with me travelling the world. Has been comfort during years with cancer in existential loneliness on bed. Thank you thank you thank you! Celebrating his Life and yours.🤍🙂🙏
Funny thing, I've been a massive fan of John's music since I was a teen. In the mid 90's I was living with my mate in Hastings when I worked in London (I'm from Liverpool) when I met my missus who was working in a hotel in Hastings. My missus is from Glasgow, so we've lived in Glasgow now for 20 years. I wasn't aware of John's connection to Hastings until I stayed there, it was my mate, who was a big Fan of John too, that told me about it, like Over the Hill is about the West Hill and all that. And the kicker is John died on our daughters birthday too.
This seems like John Martyn in his purest setting. I feel blessed.
this is about the most amazing thing ever to be seen
"Well ya sunshineless bastards. Riight ya want me ta bae Scottish, is that whi ya wan? Allllllriiiiight pal, yooouv'e goot it".....
There's only ONE John Martyn. Priceless video glenn : )
Love this version by John.So rough!
Good job he had a PA, backline and guitar with him. I always take a small PA, backline and instruments when I pop down the pub for a quiet drink - you never know
Given he lived about 5 mins walk away from the pub (and the beach) I'd say it was entirely plausible that this was off the cuff.
Thanks pal. John had his guitar in the pub, and the rest of the gear was in a fisherman's shed x
Big John sporting a right shiner!
This is truly a fantasy come true for me. I never got to see 'im live, but he CHANGed my LIFE!
His essence is captured very aptly here,i fink.
Bless you for posting!!!

I love this. You were definitely in the right place at the right time and made a great job of the filming. What a fantastic event.
@Rikk303 John Martyn on Special Brew? That's a freakin' lethal combo!!!!
Influenced me a lot with his 1st class band a few years before.....This is down to Earth, im a Festival lover too....Thanks for sharing!
Man thats a great vid, so cool.
this is why i love youtue for these fucking finds moments in time .........thank you...sir
Thanks for that lovely comment. Glad you liked it
Wow superb
Fantastic. Thanks!
thanks. glad you enjoyed it.
@UFOIST Talked basic Sassenach English with a London accent when I knew him...the Hastings RNLI Beach Concert is quite an event now. The Nelson still misses his Special Brew'd fuelled tantrums. He used to get legless before he lost a leg you know. The irony cracked him up
This is great. Quite a few familiar Hastings faces in there too :)
This is priceless :)
Yikes, this is priceless! thanks for uploading. If this was so spontaneous a gig, I must say the professional video quality is impressive.
wordofgord
That was nice!
Great bit of film Glenn. The sound is amazing too. Good to meet you at the John Prine gig last night and hopefully you got home safely.
Yeah, got home safely thanks Chris. Great gig eh!
this should be on cd audio disk...brilliant
Thanks Dave. This is just an edited version. The original version which I have is 7 minutes long. Might post it as so many people seem to like this short version
I still expect to see Min pop up in random places with his sax , sadly missed
Eminentemente Glorioso
@Cajunhotdawg Glad you enjoyed it, glenn
@sirvidia I know...I was there. A lot of familiar faces in the crowd as well. I could spend hours scanning this. Might even see me!
excellent, any more???
cool
Excellent video Glenn. Do you have any more clips of Min?
@UFOIST You should've seen him on the Single Malt
@Rikk303 he did speak with an english accent, he was making a joke.
This is great, but I was 18 and somehow things look older than I remember. Strange.
where is the rest of this gig?
I think the guy on wax at the start is a guy called min I used to know 30 years ago lol
Sax*
Spot on Mark. Sadly not with us anymore
He got me out of a tight spot in the lisle one time. Sorry to hear that. Had some great times in there in the 80s long time ago...
John martyn fan and a good trowel!? Can we be mates Glenn?
Thanks Daniel
Sleep on the edge of a razorblade
Is that Min wandering about playing sax?
