Where is this bum note? As far as I am concerned its live and This is without doubt my favourite performance of John's ever! You can't resit that groove and the passion in every note!
I'm sitting here thinking what a nifty rearrangement to make this medley, haven't heard Hurt In Your Heart done like that before and you guys are fretting about one bum note? I've tended to feel that good musicall ideas or genius or whatever you like transcends the odd bum note or slightly out of tune instrument but I guess thats just me. Love,Rich.
Folks - this is a pure Demonstration of Passion and Love - a Real Statement of Art - he was a true Genius - unique and authentic like no one else ! God, i miss him so much !
Wonderful segue into from the echoplex masterpiece of Big Muff to a gorgeous Hurt In Your Heart. I've seen John many times over the years from the end of the seventies through to the mid nineties. As a photographer I shot a few gigs (when you could still get away with it) from close to the stage and still have those cherished black and white negatives. Must make them public. Miss him so much. Great medley. Thanks for posting.
sorry someone detected a bum note. there is plenty of abba available. had never heard this before and enjoyed it so much. thanks if dilwyn jenkins survives the amazon jungle [again] i hope he finds this. when not busy defending the campa indians he turned people on to john martyn. thanks for the upload and thanks to the many people who introduced me to music - we need friends or we would have mtv all day
He rocked with a beat-up old Yamaha acoustic as well. He was never a bloke to be satisfied with a comfortable audience knowing what they were gonna get album after album. Was always blind-siding expectations. He could've churned out "Solid Air" clones year after year and made a good living but had too agile a mind and talent to settle on "comfortable". I personally love "Piece by Piece", an album which was slated by critics and fans alike. He's missed
I have loved John Martyn's music, my whole life - off the chart appreciation. When I was young, I used to think that if ever I got the chance to tell him, how much I felt for his songs, I would do that very thing. When that unexpected day arrived, I spotted him outside the Italian Baker, on Elm Row, down Leith Walk in Edinburgh - and instantly, I became star struck (for the first & only time in my life!!) and went and hid in a phone box, so's I could watch him loading stuff in to the boot of a car, wishing I had the nerve!🤩😊 Unique and heavenly, in his own mode and such a musical and poetic presence.
Only a soul that has experienced great hurt can sing & play with such great depth of feeling in expressing the emotions that accompany that pain in one's own heart. John was among that small handful of songwriters & performer's (John Prine, Townes Van Zant e.g.) that transcend the usual boundaries of adjectives such as greatness, genius. RIP JM.
@MbdslEst1964 Maybe, maybe not. It was very rare that John would hit a bum note live and on the odd occasion that he did, he'd slide it up to the right note..even with an Echoplex screaming "BUM NOTE" at him over and over. Maybe if Danny had been there with his growling double bass and intimate knowledge of Martyn songs this might have turned out differently. "Hold any water" is the smug, trite phrase you were groping for by the way
I think he would have been the first to admit he did LOADS of bum gigs! I think I saw him thirty times, and a good ten of those were a wash-out due to John's drunkenness, belligerence or sheer boredom. When he was good though, it made up for it. So sadly missed.
I suspect you are very correct in your statement. He was an amazing artist when he was right, but an utter sadness when he was wrong. He is one of the few artists the has a great impact on my life, but i am glad i did not have to see his darkest sides. He reminds me of someone I hate. I still love his art.
@MbdslEst1964 No winners there then born too young to appreciate the moment but suddenly top listener type bloke. Wrist merchant is a term I use for bottom feeders in general..go figure, I'm done with this pathetic argument. Strap a pair on
@MbdslEst1964 Ok...I'm wrong, you're right.....whatever shuts you up. Judging by your user name, you were about 4 (unless it's some company thing) when I bought Johns' 1st album.Always loved the way he never settled for a "certain style" to keep his followers happy. From basic acoustic through to startling and innovative electric playing + an amazing voice as you'll hear only now and again in a lifetime, he was a unique talent. The gig was still a dog (in my opinion)
@MbdslEst1964 He messed up a lot in loads of gigs due to the falling over water and other stuff. He IS one of my musical heroes you know Mbds. His best gig in my mind was when he came home from the pub with Beverley and played a reggae version of "May you Never" to my GF and I who were babysitting.I'm not a mind reader, but his face told a story when he knew he'd had too many drinkies and realised the gig was bombing
@MbdslEst1964 Are you suggesting he regularly hit bum notes then? Been a fan since London Conversation but I'm not gonna say he was good when he was bad
The one thing John could not abide was a tough guy. If you behaved like that around him he would take you on and beat you. I stood back to back with John many times being outnumbered. We always came out on top. If you love him. Listen to his music and make that part of your life. If you hate him. Go away and find someone else to derise.
I am a tough guy, and he would have loved me, just like I would him. There would never have been reason for violence, only peace and common ground. I have been real arse in my past, but with the right people, there was always a way around knuckles. We would have laughed a lot, that's the only thing I am sure about, warm and dark laughter...and a hug in the end. I miss him, allthough we never met!
He was beaten to pulp. Had to take a day off, because he was supposed to be on the pub with Loudon Wainwright III the next day. Even Danny has limits. ;-D
Had we got desperate, I have a recording of it somewhere amongst my music videos, but it would have taken a long time to find. It's a copy from VHS too, so not as good as this.
I keep coming back to this performance...
When he 'segues' into 'Hurt In Your' Heart'it always makes the hairs on my body stand on end. Awesome!
YES!
This is my most played, favourite version of these two songs. Just outstanding! 🥰
Just got to that transition. That was incredible.
Those chords..."plaintive" is the word that comes to mind.
This is the best version of this great song, possibly John's best performance available on film. A beautifully judged medley.
I just love the "Watch This!" glance he gives the audience on 2:41, just before the segue!

You said it! Love!

We are some people out here who would love to see your monochrome pictures from old concerts. Are they shared ever? If so, where? Can you link?

You found exactly the right words for his presence and Aura ! A true Genius !
@@andylindner When you listen to him - his music enters your core

I found out in the same phone call that John and Skynyrd's Billy Powell had died. Devastating.
Absolute class

Fuckin' BEAUTIFUL. Met John few times in London after the shows...
always find myself coming back to this masterpiece ✨
gudstuff, the bigman on top form there, cheers for uploading bro
A little bit of magic.
John in fine voice. Am I alone in not liking this particular arrangement, to me it detracts from this very sensitive song.
+Bob Barber Bob I have to agree with you on that. ........but what a guy!
Always found this to be a reflective version
R.I.P. John Giblin - WHAT a performance !!! They both play in Heaven now...
An absolute genius
genius
Excellent version! :)
Good on you Big Man....RIP

Yeah! Thanks for upload! One of my favorites of him!
He is the best for me

John would just play 'John Wayne' !
\(**)/ whoah
real vibes
yea the man upstairs powder puff
Man upstairs was Lee Perry
The bass man deserves some praise too. Who is he, anyone?
Alan Thompson, my fav fretless bass player of all time
Its John Giblin.
Cheers guys.
where's danny?
He was beaten to pulp. Had to take a day off, because he was supposed to be on the pub with Loudon Wainwright III the next day. Even Danny has limits.
;-D
@MbdslEst1964 just been watching this vid again...around the 2" mark he knows he playing a dog of a gig
his guitar was out of tune and Danny wasn't there
Why on earth would you need Danny when you have a guy there giving a masterclas in fretless bass playing (Alan thompson I think)
@@tojaks it's John Giblin . Maybe a bit out but still sounds great!
excellent - remember this being broadcast - thought it was lost forever! :)
Had we got desperate, I have a recording of it somewhere amongst my music videos, but it would have taken a long time to find. It's a copy from VHS too, so not as good as this.
Oh, my heart.
@Rikk303 - and yet still he rocks...
