Newsgroups have existed since the mid 80s. I think what you're thinking about is Newgrounds, which was founded in 1995 but really gained traction in the early 2000s.
"Old Men Remembering Things Poorly" is a fascinating new segment for the podcast. It's like James and Maso are Mike Tyson, struggling to close the distance between themselves and a younger generation, and the whole thing being a strange and uncomfortable experience that I just can't NOT watch. Keep it up, boys 🎉
They should have called the sequel Sadiator and it's the first movie but Russell Crowe has been digitally edited to have moister eyes and a slightly more downturned mouth
On that letter about how things spread before the internet. Yup, it was mostly word of mouth. You have your school circles, your extended family circles, and your family's churc/activity club/whatever social gathering where children were also dragged along, you share your ideas with those people, and hear theirs. Some of those people will like what you said and give it more thought, and in return share with their own versions of those circles. And those people forward, until it boomerangs back to you. And everyone is doing this to each other at all times. In other words, we shared and retweeted life with our mouths, same monkeys just different tools. For most things, even niche ones, there were stil publications like periodic games magazines, comic book/cartoon/animation magazines that discussed it too, which served as a further touchstone, and those people also did talking with one another, either as business talk or becasue those people with a shared interest and profession might actually share some closer social circles with each other too. Which also had their own letters, or analog comment sections. If the niche was flashy or growing fast enough that marketing heads may be wiling to take a swing at it, you might also get radio shows or even tv shows about it (or about a broader umbrella of related things), being audio and audiovisual versions of essentially the same base abstract concept. You know, kinda like all the online podcasts, blogs, social media influencers, etc. but on papper, radio and tv. Have I used the "same monkeys" line already?
On a movie set there’s literally a walkie talkie code for turdin’ out. If you gotta pee they’ll say “10-1” and if you gotta turd out they’ll say “10-2” so if DJ needs to handle some business on set, the crew will walkie everyone to explain his absence.
I could tell from the Penguin trailer that Vic as the driver is in the role that Jonny Frost had in the Brian Azzarello's Joker. I knew from the begining that Vic would share the same fate.
As a comic fan born in the 80s yes we went to comic book stores and we all talked about the best and worst things and letters columns were a vital source of information and opinons
I wasn't born then, but that's what I figured. I thought it was funny the writer understood movie discussion happened that way, but thought comics were too niche to talk about in public.
1:19:47 this is excellent. Great question…also mind blowing that I’m old enough and unfortunately knowledgeable enough to want to gladly have this conversation
Back in those ancient days, we did have magazines, fanzines, conventions, chatting in shops, etc. "Big" events would get into the mainstream, like death of Superman, or the "Woah, comics aren't just for kids" articles about Dark Knight Returns, Watchman or Maus.
9:15 'yeah I peed into bottles on set and yeah I was late more than once... and you could've asked me about it, I'm always honest! The Rock has become so bizarre in recent years, it's wild that's the defense he came out with.
I think I've been listening to this show too much because when Maso said "letters, columns" I immediately said in my head "letters Collings" in James's voice, a split second before he said it out loud.
Taika Waititi had minimal involvement in the post-production of Thor: Love and Thunder, similarly to how Nia DaCosta had little to do with the post-production of The Marvels. Both films received poor reviews, so it's a bit worrisome that Julius Onah won't be involved in the post-production of Captain America: Brave New World. I'm really hoping the movie turns out to be great.
I'm sorry but the Glenn Powell stuff is beyond ridiculous, I honestly can't recall another actor or actress being shoved in my face quite so hard. The guy's a good looking and decent actor but there are hundreds of guys just like him in Hollywood and I absolutely don't understand why he's getting so much attention.
I can totally empathise with those teens leaving the theatre tho, that one trope of every hollywood movie having a villain who has an amazing point and then killing someone last second to twist them into a villain is so frustrating. Why is it that all these studios do that kind of thing over and over again, without fail?
I'll be the first to say... "Red One is the Oppenheimer of cinema but instead of a bomb.. it's just bombing"... ughh yeah I'm not a fan of that joke either. They can't all be winners 😅
I’ll let you know a secret, there is only one episode batman is not in. He cameos in the background most episodes doing bat stuff. Episode 7 is the only non Batman cameo episode
Yeah, creators forced us to favor Vic, showing his vulnerabilities and shortcomings , and then brutally killed him as if he was nobody. Now, this show has fairly sophisticated psycological layout (which is amazing by the way), with multiple scenes, where characters touch highly complex topics about human nature. With such complexity, it was a shame creators were unable to find more creative solution to the problem of showing Penguin's true nature, and let him and Vic part ways peacefully.
"We JUST had this character, lets give him a rest." That's probably why we won't get Bane again anytime soon either, Dark Knight Rises was 12 years ago but that's still probably "too soon" for most people.
The issue with the lack of Batman in the Penguin is that he isn't even mentioned, or considered to be a factor in the decision making of any of the characters. Even though he beat the brakes off of Oz multiple times in the movie. I'm fine with him not appearing, but at least acknowledge that he isn't dead lol
People are forgetting that this show takes place over about a week an a half and begins the next day after the ending of the Batman. At the end of that movie Batman literally took a shotgun blast to the chest and almost died. So hes either resting and recuperating or he is still helping people in the wreckage around Gotham.
Other than the first episode right at the start, where the news mentions Batman helping evacuate people from the flood yeah. I assume Batman was too injured to go out for awhile or whatever. You would think that Oz would have talked about him at some point though.
we saw scarecrow in the nolan trilogy but he was so underutilized :( . at least he got to shine in the arkham games including the new one most people won't play. he was amazing in arkham shadow (even if i am a bit ambivalent about him having worked in arkham asylum, something that started with nolan)
In the The Rock vs Vin Diesel fight, i pick vin purely because the rock got payed to say he liked imax, but like 15 years ago vin diesel, outta nowhere commented on my lil sister’s instagram post where she went to a fast and furious movie saying sum like “going to the movies with friends is fun”😂😂😂

A couple of episodes in the penguin and i gotta say, "it's pretty good. " But one thing that keeps bugging me is that i watch it and think that this story could happen in any other gritty crime show. I'm also working my way through "the wire" and Oz could pass as some up and coming Baltimore crime lord if he changed his accent up a bit. My point being is in a little tired by this grounded take on batman. Christopher Nolan already did it and it was pretty good, but if there are no crazy characters or otherworldly elements then what's the point of even adapting a comic book story? At least the dark knight movies took the comic book elements and found a way to make it work "realistically." Why does this guy wear a cape? Because he can glide through the air. How the hell does that work? Some special material that stiffens when excited by force exerted on it. Whereas the Robat Batinbat world (at least the penguin) feels like they're taking a grounded crime world and stuffing the batman into it
Saw GladIIator today, I really did not like it. It's just worse than the first in every way bar some of the more grandiose fights, no compelling characters, no compelling story, just the first movie but worse.

The pee bottles on the set of Red One inspired the Rock's new energy drink, Yellow One, available exclusively at an IMAX theater near you.
Yellow one is pretty good, but #RoidOne is the best energy drink, and this is not an ad ;)
Specifically, near the men's restroom
Cinema clearly reached its peak with Red Notice. It's Christmas-themed spinoff, Red One, was doomed to fail.

@@moondustmix1682 that oughta throw them off, cause its a different color

The rock said Red One on IMAX would be "game over". Seeing as it flopped pretty hard, technically he wasn't wrong
