Ridley Scott is now making movies about stuff he hates...which is a bizarre way to make films. He made a crap film about Napoleon because he openly hated the historical figure. It's one thing to hate-watch a film, but to hate-direct one? Seems like a lot of work.

That makes so much sense as to why he ignored all the amazing parts of Napoleon's life and conquering and only focused on making him seem like a weak minded cuck 😂😂. Probably what Ridley is in private which is why he self projects his bullshit onto much more superior men then himself

The reality is that if Napoleon had been doing his thing in the early 20th century he would have been tried and hung for "crimes against humanity" just like the SS/Nazi’s were.
His own generals hated him, sickening many when he negotiated with a city to surrender (to avoid a long siege) to allow all the soldiers and citizens to leave. Once they surrendered and threw all their weapons away, he ordered the execution/murder of them all.
If you quite rightly hate Napoleon, all that is needed is to show the world his atrocities.

I don’t care for Eastwoods latest movies. I find them very lacklustre. ‘Cry Macho’ was not an enjoyable experience for me.
Also he usually only shoots one take, even if the actors require more. That’s might be alright when you’re directing the likes of Matt Damon and Bradley Cooper, but when you’re directing younger or more inexperienced actors, you need to spend some more time to coax decent performances from them.

That explains why Gladiator 2 looked like BTS footage in some scenes, Ridley shooting on a digital camera (using 15 cameras for some scenes to get as much footage as fast as possible to then move on) without taking the time to allow John to light them properly. It gave it that actors-doing-cosplay look that made it look like a streaming release compared to the gorgeous cinematic visual quality of kodak and eastman 35mm used for the first one where it actually looks like a professional studio movie from the big 5. The first 2 minute entrance into the colosseum before Maximus instructs the gladiators to all stick together just for sheer thrill-factor, soundtrack, tension building, visual quality..etc is far better than the entirety of the sequel. John is right that cinematography and lighting play a huge part in tone and storytelling and was definitely one of the strongest features of Gladiator.

@jesserochon3103 Agreed, there were definitely a few interior scenes including that one that took me out of it quite often. Thankfully not all modern movies have taken shortcuts for convenience as we've still had 'Oppenheimer,' 'Challengers,' 'Twisters,' 'The Bikeriders,' 'Asteroid City,' 'The Northman,' 'Nosferatu,' 'Strange Darling,' The Brutalist' and the upcoming 'The Battle of Baktan Cross' that have taken steps to deliver the same level of quality we used to see all the time by using the same technology, equipment, attention to detail and filmmaking techniques that have required more expense and more shooting days in the schedule but have paid off massively in the finished product.

@@Skrenja Lol Yeah, I mean just compare the 4k's of The Hobbit to LOTR, Matrix Resurrections to The Matrix, Jurassic World to Jurassic Park, Alien Covenant to Alien, Independence Day 2 to Independence Day, Furiosa to Road Warrior, Dial of Destiny to Raiders of the Lost Ark and Horizon to Open Range (just on a visual comparison) and there's still a big difference in quality - better color contrast & transition, resolution and dynamic range on 35mm and no weightlessness to the environment. Comedies and Horror movies especially have suffered from digital - I watched both 'Totally Killer' and 'Ghosted' last year and it just looked like cheap fan films compared to movies in the same genres and budget levels shot on 35 like 'Strange Darling' and 'Mr & Mrs Smith,' it's not even close. For people who use 'Gone Girl' or 'The Shape of Water' as examples of how a digicam can give you a nice looking image, sure, but then compare that to the same directors' previous work on 35 ('Seven' for Fincher and 'Pan's Labyrinth' for Del Toro).

The culture is degenerating everywhere, so it might not be Ridley Scott's fault. He might be just reacting to and managing the situation that exists at the moment. Imagine how many people he's surrounded by that were hired not for their skill or competence, but for their skin color or genitalia or sexual proclivities. The people around him are surely of much lower quality than in his past projects. He has to do things now in such a way that these hangers-on can't mess it up too badly. He learned that you can't trust one camera man anymore, he needs three now so he can pick the best shot out of all three medicore results. He learned that post-production and CGI are required because these idiots leave booms and coffee cups in the shot all the time. I don't think we can jump to blaming Ridley Scott without more information. DEI on average has lowered the quality of people in key positions. There is much more going on with all this, and the effects run deep. AND I would want to know a lot more about this person lodging these complaints about him before putting too much stock in them.

Even Spielberg and Zemickus haven't made a movie I like in 15 years. And you can see all the "notes" and "politics" invading their stuff. The truth is that many directors get better with age. Many directors keep directing until their 100's if they live that long. Manoel de Oliveira was from Portugal, and made films until he was 106, and he still had it at the end. Kurosawa's film, Ran, is his best and was made when he was 75. Eastwood is still going strong. Juror #2 is an excellent film. So is Woody Allen's Coup de Chance.
The Ten Commandments was Cecil B DeMille's final film. He was 76 years old when he made it. It's his best film.
If a director shoots "economically" (aka 8 hours days), it's much better for them in the long run. If they shoot the 18-20 hour days Iwhich many directors do), that's really hard to do at an advanced age. Even though Eyes Wide Shut is a great film IMO, Kubrick shot it like he usually did, long days, lots of takes, and by all accounts, he was absolutely exhausted at the end of every shooting day. He died shortly after screening the film to Tom and Nicole (and the 2 heads at Warner Brothers). He very well may have killed himself on that film. Who knows? I don't know if Ridley shoots long days or economical ones.

Shouldnt have been made at all....Ford mailing in another "performance" ruining another iconic character of his in exchange for a truckload of cash he doesnt need.
      Also disrespected Sean Young.

You know, Sir David Attenborough is still doing his thing. From what I know his stuff is not too bad. Though, to be fair, most of his work is narration.

I actually thought the Last Duel was a good movie. An orignal story set during the Middle Ages. Well acted, and it looked great. I know it bombed, but it was something different for a change.

I still want him to finish or at the very least continue David's storyline. He was the best character in PROMETHEUS and ALIEN : Covenant. And Fassbender is a superb actor.

What I am afraid of is that the old guard from the new Hollywood era will pass on but the filmmakers of this decade are nowhere near as good compared to that era, and that is unfortunately who we will be stuck with.

I like this channel a lot, but guys.. Ridley is one of the top 10 directors of all time, gladiator 2 was not that bad like my goodness, it has a 71% critic rating and 83% fan score. He’s delivered some of the best films of all time.

      Right!
Really irks me when people with no talent criticize those who have far more talent and experience than they do.

So I have a friend who works in Visual Effects. She worked on Napoleon, or specifically her company did so they did many things. I asked her what the weirdest effect they had to do was, and she told me "A flag blowing in the breeze, cos it wasn't windy that day and Ridley insisted on the flag blowing in a small corner of the screen". She said it took forever and replicating the armies was easier.
But yeah, if he is running things out, it is likely cos he's 86 and may not have long left. And with him and Eastwood or even Francis Ford Coppola, who are at that stage of their lives, asking "Why are you still doing this?", cos is it a money thing or a creative thing or what??

Been saying this for years. His last decent movie was the Martian (all the way back in 2015). Since then? Nothing but over bloated, pretentious turds

The Martian was decent but even that feels forgettable. His last really good movie was American Gangster in 2007.
