      BTW: a Watt is a Joule/second. We can use 500 watts draw (power) for two hours using 1KWhr of energy. (the time hours / time sec cancels out to create the unit energy) energy is joules. This detail means little to 99%+ of the folks.

    Thanks for your tutorial video. SCE's website gives only a partial explanation, not explaining 082, which is the number most needed for actual monitoring of usage in super hot weather.

    Hi! Thanks for the tutorial. I just had to mention that you sometimes confuse power (units of kW) with energy (units of kWh). The readings that say kW under the number are power, not energy. A kWh is used when you run an appliance that uses a kW for an hour. :-) Thanks for the video.

    Good info. Got my PTO from SCE last week. Meter (Openway) says FatError2 and I dont seem to be generating any energy, according to comparison of recent energy use vs a few weeks ago. Solar company is useless and Edison is non-responsive. Electrician replaced/upgraded the panel back in December and it seemed to be working normally after that until roughly a week ago. SCE rep came out a few weeks ago and put a sticker on it verifying the location. I was able to find the Operating manual for the meter and it indicates a RAM error and says it needs to be returned for repair.

    The instantaneous readings are not kwh but kw. You can reference the display, in bottom right hand side under the value, it reads kw. Good job!

    Just had a Powerwall battery and separate grid tied PV panels installed in SCE territory - exactly the video I needed to understand my meter. I’ve also spent some time with the SCE power rates. Looks like the PV and battery goal should be to minimize your use of peak power (and maybe mid- and off-peak) but not to put net power on the grid (as measured monthly or annually, not daily). SCE will only reimburse you at about 1/4 to 1/3 their peak rate, which is even less than their off-peak rate.

      Yes, the best way to do it is not to generate power for SCE but to displace your own usage. It's a bit like playing black jack. You want capacity up to your usage, but anything over is too much. We bought an electric car and started to nerd out on this as a result.

      I took another look at the SCE winter rates and realized it was more expensive to charge on off-peak and discharge on mid-peak than it was to just use the grid for mid-peak. There’s only about a 3% different between mid-peak and off-peak rates. So at 90% round trip efficiency the Powerwall ends up costing more. I also calculated that to get the equivalent of 54 discharges annually for SGIP I needed about 2 kWh of discharge daily. No problem, I exceed that during on-peak alone. So my strategy now is to tweak the battery reserves so that discharge stops just after on-peak ends. Then of course recharge on off-peak. This meets the SGIP program goals, minimizes my costs, prolongs Powerwall life by reducing discharges, and gives me a larger emergency reserve. I’ll have to tweak it periodically as consumption changes over time. I’ll also need to see if this works in summer.

    a video on FAIL scenarios would be good. My last bill shows the power company is charging me FOR what was delivered. Everything looks normal and jives with the numbers Sunrun monitors. Problem is the power company , or something in the system has flipped the equation.

    On my meter it arrows to left with "received" below it which I would like to know if it means my system is sending to the grid? I still need to interconnect with PGE and really wasn't sure how my system would perform so as a DIY'er I'm learning. Update: I went ahead and watched it some more and noticed when I wasn't charging the battery from the PV's the delivered (.461kw) changed to received (1.4kw) so it would appear the Solar is doing a tug o war. < received/>delivered.

    Just a minor correction to an otherwise fine video: the real-time power generation (or consumption) unit is kilowatts, not kilowatt-hours; the former is a *rate* of energy generation or consumption, the latter is an absolute amount of energy measured over time. For example, 1000W is 1000 joules/sec (a rate of energy), but 1000W over the course of an hour, is 1000 Wh, or more commonly specified as 1 kWh. You are billed by kWh.

    This is really helpful except my meter seems to have different number codes. Otherwise it looks identical to the one in the video. My meter model is CL200 and it cycles through the number codes 11, 4, 6, 10. What do those correspond to? Thanks!

    How can one tell how much the panels have produced? Like you mention, part of the production is consumed by the running equipments in the house, such as refrigerators, and excess is sent to the grid. This does tell how much is actually produced by the panels. What is the display under the inverter? Thank you for your video. It is informative.

      J. Prakash you actually have to look at the inverter not the meter. It depends on the model but almost all of them have a separate display. The inverter should be on the house side on the meter. Mine shows instantaneous power, cumulative power and some weird cumulative CO 2 saved metric.

    It was 'difficult' to find this particular video on youtube. All of the others did not cover the readings, and what they mean. They were mostly about the radiation coming from the meters. I needed to know what the smart meter was saying because the readout on my 6000W Sonny Boy stopped having an LED readout years ago, and I neglected to repair it. It is the same Sonny Boy as the one in your video. I have the manual but it does not specifically indicate that the LED panel is 'fused'. Removal of the cover is no big deal if all of the circuit breakers are off. I plan to clean the fans shortly and will be removing them. Any advice on this on the LED issue would be appreciated. Some are being sold on EBay. If the LED readout panel is obsolete, not replaceable, is there any way to broadcast the LED readings to my computer? I have 39 PV panels facing south, installed in 2008.Thank you for your great youtube video.

      I would guess that you can probably use the same wireless connection that the power companies use? I've never tried that. My inverter has a specific wireless component that you can add to read it via Bluetooth, but I've never tried with the power company's meter.

    My Pid is 232 and the odd thing is it seems to be measuring correct the amount of electricity I am pushing to the grid but, when I am consuming my own and charging my batteries, it seems it is indicating that I am consuming that from the grid ( the arrow points to the right) while my system says it is using the solar. My electric bill comes super high and this started to happen recently, it is as if they are charging me for the electricity I am producing.

      My electricity bill went through the roof recently also (no pun intended) and I have a dispute with SCE to understand what's up. That might be related.
      If that problem isn't related though your house might need more than what your panels are producing and so you still need to take some from the grid. That would explain why you still seem to be using electricity even during the sunny times. It should be less than what you would use without panels though. SCE pays much less for electricity than it charges you. That's well advertised by them.

    Small Correction needed, At various times you mean the draw is being displayed and you say kilowatt hours, "draw" or more precisely power, also called "demand ", is measured in kilowatts not kilowatt hours. KW is a measure of power, kWh is a measure of energy.

      That's a good question. I'm not sure what the answer is, but it seems to be related to messing with the meter, not a date or time. Likely it is cumulative since the meter was installed since the current owner of the house had only lived in the house a short amount of time. Even without being resettable it is useful because you can write down the cumulative usage/generation at a given point in time and then subtract that from a point in the future if you want a subset of time.

      Units of energy (work done over time) are kilowatt hours. Units of power (instantaneous intensity or force) are kilowatts. Code 082 is an example of an instantaneous power value. Both values are important. Energy over time is comparable to the number of gallons of water supplied to a house in one billing period. Instantaneous power is also important because the sum of all users' power requirements at a given time corresponds to the load imposed upon the energy provider (utility). Peak demand determines the maximum power output required of the utility. Annual peak demand will occur only once and will be far higher than the average demand. Probably way more than you asked, but there it is anyway!

    Love all that info. Can you pls. Tell me why i have different readings from the solar panel box to the main smart meter. Pg & E smart meters in the middle of a sunny 90° day .. said I was making money @ 3.2
    The meter said 1.7. I know the numbers were always the same. Now its all different. There was a time when the pg&e guy came and we got into a argument because he wanted for me to drop my said I couldn't. Call first and make an appointment. Before you just come to my plan and say you need access to there shit. My did pups was doing good trying to protect the yard. She doest identify any kind of uniform.

    Is it possible to detect PV panel installations from smart meter electricity consumption data? If we have only consumption data and not installed the net meter.

      Well if the meter indicates that power is going out to the grid, PV panels are the most likely explanation,

    Understanding and reading a smart meter is nice but doesn't provide enough information to accurately determine a monthly usage (consumption/production). I purchased the Emporia smart home energy monitoring system. I then downloaded an SCE usage CVS file from their website and compared it to my Emporia monitoring file. I compared a single day down to the hour and found that SCE is crediting me 30 to 45% less in KWH then what my actual production is. Has anyone else experienced a similar situation?

    If you have a grid tie and inverter and solar panels&batteries, can you send back electricity to the power grid if you have a standard smart meter that everyone else has, or does it have to be a specific kind of smart meter?

      My understanding is that the smart meter is all you need, mine doesn't appear to be anything special, but you might need a software update on the meter to support the additional record keeping.

      The same meter can be used, but most will to be reprogrammed to read and register recieved and delivered. Some companies just change the meter and program the new one.

    Question: In my net meter is showing the following:
    Company = Duke Energy State=Florida
    First, a bunch of numbers ( I know this one from your video)
    Then, it says no sync
    Then shows the code 00 = 4038 arrow pointing from right to left ( production send to the grid) I GUESS
    Then end with code 01 = 1780 arrow pointing from right to left ( production send to the grid) I GUESS
    Can you educate me on the subject?

    I have a question regarding SCE, and solar panels. I have yet to get a electric bill, for 9 months on a new tract house, and they keep saying it’s technician issues. I also am unable to see how much I’m using on SCE’a website. Is it possibly my 8 panels are making more electricity than I’m pulling from the grid?

      Yes its definitely possible. You electric meter should show a negative flow if that's true. Check in the summer at roughly noon during full light to see the most likely time for this to occur.

      It depends on how they are arranged. If they are in a series configuration then the last one before the street. If they are in parallel then you have to read each one and add up the result.

    i have a question. i had a smart meter installed 2-3 years ago. if i want to go solar, does the meter need to be chaged or can it just be programmed? are all smart meters two way?

      If you have a recent meter, then it is likely capable of just being reprogrammed. You will need an inverter as well though. That is like a seperate meter for the solar panels that converts the solar energy and puts it on the grid. It has its own meter on it.

      When you go solar, your smart meter is ready to do net metering. So you do not have to change your meter

    Hi, I have a CL200 Type C2M meter that has been there for a while. I have a new PV system installed and solar company says that the meter has been changed so I can use my PV system. I feel this is the same as the one I had before. And it only displays the cumulative energy that's been used of 17,420kwh and none of the other number such as cumulative energy produced or instantaneous +/- energy consumption vs generation. Does the meter need to be replaced or just reprogrammed?

      It's likely just a programming issue. I'm not sure what options there are for reprogramming though.
