    Our bills went up almost immediately after we had our meter changed from the mechanical dial type. I was convinced that the meters must be recording the current peaks which occur during the first few ms of an appliance being turned on, which were previously damped by the mechanical style meter due to the inertia of the disc. So I contacted Honeywell who manufactured the meters at the time and they confirmed that the meters do record the initial peaks which can cumulatively add more to your bill. Fortunately they have software "damping", but the amount recorded is adjustable by the network/installer (via software and infra-red comms interface). So I guess if all refrigerators and pumps etc incorporated a "soft start" it might help?

      Mechanical meters slow down over time. Very common complaint when digital meters are installed because they are more accurate and don't slow down (or speed up) over time.

    • @user-qx5ik5cv4n
      @user-qx5ik5cv4n 2 месяца назад

      @@stevecampbell7620 Negative, analog mechanical meters have a much longer lifespan and are calibrated within 2% of industry standards before implementation. Smart meters not only charge extra for peak hour usage but also on 15 minutes peak intervals, and voltage. if that’s not bad enough, they are extremely inefficient stepping down 120v to 12volts, without any grounding making them prong to fires. Don’t get me started on the health concerns with smart meters. Analog meters have none of these issues plus they are hack proof thus private from data collection.

    the original smart meters had a zigbee chip installed to monitor appliance usage. appliance companies couldn't agree on a language to use, so they stopped installing the chips in them. most power companies won't use the newer meters that scan the load variants because of the cost and the simple fact that it does them no good knowing what appliance is on. only your total usage and, if you're a heavy or industrial place, the overall demand / power factor of your building. those directly affect the grid and bottom line. The Zigbee was for the end user only, so the customer would be able to easier diagnose failing appliances.
    You are correct in your assumption about the sporadic communications, the packets are small that are sent to the hub, but bandwidth is still bandwidth. Most residential meters communicate once every hour, commercial once every 15 minutes.

    There are some power companies that allow you to use your own meter and more commonly for back feeding and something like sharing power you might have your own meter to know how much is being used so you can charge them for their portion

    • @TheFreedomBay
      @TheFreedomBay Год назад +1

      Yup. There a quite few here in Norway with their own little water mills producing their own power and selling the surplus if they are connected too the grid.
      I guess the "smart" wifi/5G part is practical so they dont need to go down to the turbines.
      Another reason why these things are for sale on the internet may be a demand in the developing world, where power companies has a more secondary role. I dunno, just a thought

    I think people are interested because utilities can be costly and want to reduce their outgoings.
    I recently revamped my flat. I had to turn off my tiny British fridge-freezer (undercounter) as l had a new one coming.
    I actually dont use it only to keep milk fresh but because the nilk l buy is UHT it doesn't even need to be cooled to stay fresh.
    I just happened to leave it switched off. Then l got my electric bill which was £25!
    MY BILLS ARE NORMALLY £400-580!
    I was sooo shocked now l don't use it - the new kitchen looks pretty enough with it without it being switched on.
    If l wait long enough (6 bills) my new kitchen will have paid for itself LOL l'm so chuffed.
    I just had to share this with you.

      Interesting question, depends on the meter you have. I assume you have a phase converter to run it? They could tell power draw but likely appears like an A/C unit would or Dryer from power draw perspective.
      If you read about a company called Sense, they have a more advanced technology that has been integrated into some meters that can actually “fingerprint” the power line so to speak.

    The electric companies should not be talking about meter tampering. There are manipulating the smart meters remotely. Does anyone consider that smart meter allows the power company to speed up your meter anytime they want. That is why alot of people are saying that smart meters are reading more or faster. Someone should prove that.

    hi, video interesting, i have investigated, i cached them - how the job going on - smart meter from the mechanical meter nothing different they rolling equal, but they monitoring voltage, so they push voltage 246v, when everyone after work home they increase to 253v, that is how bill goes up after replaced smart meter, someone cheating on you rip off, they have to monitor voltage to avoid burn your house over voltage. there schema is 230v allowed + - 10%, 23v minus or plus, so between 207v and 253v they can play up but they never drop that low as you could safe money. to sew them to small claim court wont be successful. if you seen voltage optimisation unit cost 400£ could reduce 10% - it is good but need to plug this unit before smart meter to safe money. i thinking call to shop who selling optimisation unit ask them how to get permision to plug before smart meter, if not allowed then what is point to buy them

      Inefficient appliances and things you wouldn’t suspect can definitely add up. You might have an electric water heater for your hot water. If it’s old and not able to store hot water without losing the heat that can add up FAST!

    Sure I'm going to copy and paste someone's comment and I'd like to see what you think about it we're having a big discussion in North Mississippi about smart meters and health and the comment I'm going to paste the man says that they cannot tell what kind of appliances are being used and I was under the impression that they can would you please read his following comment and let me know what you think thank you sir and I enjoy your channel
    "It is impossible to make any reasonable comparison to your neighbor's electric bill since there are many factors which impact each individual bill such as insulation. type of windows and doors, lifestyle, etc. Also the "Smart Meters" measure the total energy used and transmits that information to the utility, HSUD in my case. I does not have any way to know what devises are using the energy at any one time. You can have such systems added to your home but the Smart Meter is not such a device."

      It depends on the capability of the smart meter. There ARE smart meters that can differentiate devices being used. Search for the Landis+Gyr Revelo smart meter and look at what it can do. It incorporates technology from the company Sense to do just that.

    Our rich Prime donna electrical supplier got a huge donation to speed up the change over to smart meters maybe 12 years ago. Still waiting for promise that residential customers would be able to acess thier smart meters to read power usage. Last liars are still working on it.

    Companies can manipulate the meters. Does anyone consider that smart meter allows the power company to speed up your meter! That is why alot of people are saying the smart meters are reading more or faster.

      That technology is advancing rapidly, check out products by the company Sense, or the Landis+Gyr Revelo smart meter that incorporates the same technology.
      They can detect much more than just power draw like the first generation meters.

    Can’t you just hack the meter to show less usage reported to the grid. Instead of all this solar stuff being shoved on us.

    I hate my SMART meter and I hate my power company. My bill is 3 times higher than it should be, it flips my breaker if I try running my toaster and microwave at the same time and, it emits way too much emf, causing pulsed hits which have caused some health issues... They give the runaround when asking to have it removed. They've lied to people in the past and charge them for a non SMART meter, that's still SMART
    SMART= Secret Militarized Armaments in Residential Technology
    SMART devices are weapons.

    It feels like an invasion of privacy for them to be able to figure out what kind of electrical devices are being run, when they run, how often, and all that. Should be able to opt out or something.
