I don’t think people realize just how insane of a player Arber Xhekaj is and will be… he will NOT be losing his place on the team to anyone else. Guy is 6’4, 240 and has insanely good skating for his size. Good in his zone, good in the 0-zone, plays physical. He just does it all and still a LOT of room to develop being 21-22 and only 1 season in the NHL. I’m definitely just as excited for this guy as I am for Hutson, Mailloux, and Reinbacher. Future D-core is absolutely terrifying: Hutson-Reinbacher Guhle-Mailloux Xhekaj-Barron
I see Guhle taking that top D spot with Hutson and Xhekaj fighting for that second pairing. Wifi is such a huge presence and he's not going anywhere. they were trying to get him to play Left wing so he's clearly got some offensive upside that we aren't considering. I'd love to see him play left wing and become a top 9 forward and make some room for the Left D.
@@mgyb8269I don’t think that will happen anytime soon. And if it does, we can always trade some of our D once we have a better picture of who our stars are.
That’s insane! I really like the future of defensive group of Habs. They are going fun to watch, for sure. MTL will have a very solid team in 2-3 years.
it was the best pick hands down. we have our top line C so no point wasting it on a C, the "superstar" isn't going to play for 3 years and is playing in a Sub NHL league while Reinbacher gets to play with his Line mates and develop with the Team. not to mention we needed that sub 23 RD top 4 prospect. he was also top 5 pick all year.. right move 100%. also, you build a team net out for a reason.
I saw the guy play in Switzerland. I was impressed. The guy needs 1 or 2 years to be full NHL ready, he's an unpolished diamond right now, but he already has very few weaknesses, it's amazing at this age.
About Reinbacher's offensive side that we might have not seen yet; Eric Faille, former teammate and Captain of Reinbacher, said in an interview (in French) that David was kind of timid at first but eventually they were building their powerplay around him. I'm paraphrasing and keeping it brief but Faille seemed very genuine in his praise for Reinbacher. The untapped potential is there.
Reinbacher is an absolute stud. So underrated. Y'all don't know what this guy is about. But soon, you'll be watching him dominate the NHL blueline. He's that good.
I feel like Hughes undersold him. What he did in his draft year is remarkable. It's up there with the seasons of guys who are Norris candidates. The only possible caveat is that he's a November birthday and thus older than most first time draft eligibles, but he was also playing in a league that doesn't play kids. Once he's established, I expect him to have 40 points a year at a minimum. I wouldn't blink at 50. 60 or even more isn't out of the question. And I'm expecting a lot of that to be at even strength.
@@APJTA I think Hughes undersold him on purpose. Someone said that he did that to not put extra pressure on him. But yeah, I expect Reinbacher to become an absolute stud too. He's already great defensively, and he's improving in real-time offensivley. I totally agree with you, his ceiling is very high
Matheson, who is probably our #2 D right now, is still quite young. I think he gets moved in a monster deal for a superstar forward when Hutson is ready to join the team.
Matheson definitely had a breakout season this year, just a tad bit older than our young group so i’m not sure if he’ll still be in the picture in a few years. Might end up trading him when the rookies pass him or something

Trudeau with all the injuries took a leading role in the D core of Laval and he seem to be a great all around defenseman, a lot like Harris really. Nurmi is a pure defensive one, but he play in the Liiga with men so and Tourigny could be a great surprise cause he is a lot like Trudeau and Harris and now he is playing in Slovakia with men...Our defensive core is insane long term !!

Agree on all comments. WE haven't seen so much quality in the back end for years now. We still need to give them time to develop but it looks VERY interesting moving forward. GHule with Reinbacher may be quite a tandem. Mister X with Barron I think could really form good chemistry but I would give Barron more time in Laval at the start of the season to play important minutes there and then bring him up when his defensive game improves. Hutson is 2 years away and Engstrom might be ready next year as he has hockey IQ engraved in him. Mailloux needs 1 complete year in LAval to develop his defensive game. With Struble, it all depends on him. IF he really wants the job, he will have to earn it by opening some eyes! 2 years from now, the defensive corpses will look really cool!
They are drafting for the future, as opposed to what the Habs need right now. It takes more time to develop defensemen, so by the time the rebuild is done they will have a solid blue line to backup the rookie offense.
