I hope you don't find this question pretentious, but what does "lude" mean? PS: If I had no interest in the subject matter or wanted to stifle it, I wouldn't make the video in the first place. - Brady
Brady, just out of interest, can you do a video about what you and each of the interviewees on this channel actually believe? Or is that too much of a flamewar risk?
I find it interesting that the justification for the nature of the conclave is vary similar to a justification you might hear for fascism. Please do not think I am trying to pick a fight, I'm just musing that the balance between transparency and democracy & order and unity is one of the big struggles in the creation of different governing systems. The draw backs of inefficiency and division are what many people who have believed in and fought for fascism were looking to avoid.
I'm not Roman Catholic, but I can appreciate the perspective that God can work through our human means of decision making. I am reminded of Acts 15, where the church decided upon a a matter of great doctrinal and practical importance simply by getting together and arguing it out. To be sure, the will of God was done that day.
Overall a fair representation. The "two Pope problem" disappears when one recognizes exactly what this gentleman said...the Papacy is a role that one steps into, and can under certain circumstances, step out of. It's quite obvious that Pope Benedict has no designs to compete or attempt to "co-reign" with whoever the newly elected Pope will be.
Could you please do a video on the books in the Catholic & Orthodox Bibles that the Protestants removed and call "Apocrypha"? Many of them are quite interesting, even if you don't think they "make the cut."
I'm a bible thumper, Brady, and I find the questions fair. These are questions people have. We shouldn't shrink from them, but wrestle with them fairly. Thanks for the vids.
As a former Catholic, I really appreciate Mr. Oliver's thoughtful and respectful commentary. Most of the coverage of the papal election process is downright laughable because the media seems to be oblivious to the difference between the selection of a pope and an average political election.
There is no other way for me to get such detailed knowledge about Catholicism in my busy life. I am thankful for the work Brady and the people of Nottingham University do taking part in making me a better human.
The very existence of the conclave is such a strong reminder that the Church is human, not divine. It becomes so palpable the fact that deacons are just as capable of knowing God's will as we are. Brady's question exposes one of the weaknesses of the Catholic Church: pretending to be something it's not. The Church is not a link between God and us. If God wanted to have a human representative on Earth, and if their sub-representatives were able to know His will, there'd be no need for a vote.
To the (classic) question we heard at 2:55 ff., there is a more straightforward answer than the one given by Simon Oliver. None of the sacraments, including the Order, confers impeccability. The priesthood is a vocation: so, the real question is not why isn't a priest impeccable but whether or not he has the vocation. To my deep sorrow (I'm a Catholic), we may very well doubt about the vocation of many priests, particularly those who were ordained in these last decades...
There would be no argument. Benedict renounced his office, and that was the end of his papacy. He cannot claim 'oh it was just an error' the renunciation was canonically and theologically binding, Francis is upon the chair. Some people think infallibility of the Pope speaks of his moral character or his own judgement, this is untrue. It simply speaks of the inability for a false doctrine to be defined by someone who holds that office, the roof may cave in and crush him if it is necessary.
You really should make a video (or two...) about the relation between Bible and Qu'ran! Like similarities and differences in these two holy books and so forth.
On another note, your own comment thread title "NeedsEvidence" seems to be steeped in simplistic philosophical precepts of 'positivism', 'radical skepticism' (which reduces to uselessness), and 'scientism' (the philosophical position that science is the only means of knowledge, which refutes itself as the claim is a metaphysical/philosophical one which it can't defend).
I find myself agreeing with koshhe on the interviewer, but with the interviewer on why Dr Oliver remains Anglican. :) I am Catholic, and Dr Oliver's replies were very accurate and represented the Catholic view apart from one niggle, which the group of Catholic Theologians who picked it up, pointed out: thesacredpage 18th Feb 2013: No, the Holy Spirit doesn't "choose" the pope Well done, Bibledex! Your site is great, too.
Love this video and all of your videos and all of your videos. So will you be making videos about the other Christian churches/denominations now? I would love to see videos about Anglicanism, the Orthodox churches, the Protestant denominations, etc.
Thankyou Simon - very interesting and very well explained - i especially found interesting the second half, about why the process is kept private, and that does make sense. would like to say more but have to run out door. thanks again, look foward to more! regards.
Thank you for this video. And thank you as well for this channel. I've been a huge fan of your other channels and I've been curious about this one for a while now. Although I'm not Christian, I love sources like this where I can learn academically and objectively about another religion. I hope you ignore a lot of the hateful comments left by others and continue to make more videos for this channel. Thanks again!
My mum watched this and when he said "I'm a church of England priest", she said "I wish I could work for him." with slight starry eyes. (My mum works for a vicar.)
If you watch Brady's other videos, you will see he often asks questions to get the interviewee talking. Often these questions do not represent his real opinion, but are what he thinks an ignorant or disagreeing viewer might be thinking. Did you mean 'lewd'? 'Rude'?
Really interesting video, great to see Bibledex back. I'm not a Christian but I find the religion, especially Catholicism and the Eastern churches, to be incredibly fascinating. It'd be cool to see more videos like this.
You are entirely correct, of course. In my defense, I had written a longer explanation of why DNA very strongly supports the Theory of Evolution, but I ran out of space and summarized it as "DNA proved evolution conclusively". Sometimes being fussy is useful, precision does matter, thanks for your correction!
No. The reason it is called a "Theory" is because in the scientific community the word "Theory" means a set of tested principles that can be used to predict future outcomes. Gravity is also a Theory.
The Bible teaches that the casting of lots is the method of choosing Church leaders, although we have some choice in those who are selected. When we vote, we are attempting to do it based on our own understanding. Acts 1_26 And they gave lots for them; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
You are misunderstanding the use of the word theory. The word theory in The Theory of Evolution is not used in the familiar sense, that of an unproven guess, that is more properly termed a hypothesis, and theory, in scientific terms is an explanation of fact, such as the Theory of Gravity. There are no "problems" with the Theory of Evolution, as a matter of fact, the more we look the better it matches. Darwin came up with the Theory before we discovered DNA, DNA proved evolution conclusively.
I think it's a good introduction to this stuff. The views are, perhaps, a little less controversial than some of the stuff I tend to like, but this certainly isn't some kind of vehicle for asserting dogma.
Superb question about the voting. If "professional" christians can't work out what god wants, what chance has anyone else got, and if nobody can be sure that they got it right, why does anybody give credence to those who claim to?
To be fair, a lot of Catholic doctrine and dogma has a rather tenuous link to Scripture (if at all) and some aspects (e.g. transsubstantiation) conflict with modern understanding of chemistry. Ultimately, the decision made by the Cardinals is a personal one, based on who they think will be the best match for the role from what little they've seen of each other (most Cardinals only ever meet during papal funerals and conclaves). Ratzinger is now officially Pope Emeritus (pontifex emeritus).
I don't think we can... You will require an infinite amount of evidence in order to be absolutely certain of anything, and we cannot have infinite when we are finite beings. We can determine what is probably true, but we cannot determine what is absolutely true. We live in a probabilistic universe (on a quantum scale) and a deterministic world (on a local scale)
It was decided in the Catholic church in the middle ages that the teachings of priests 'gone bad' were still valid, because otherwise the population would be afraid that they were at risk and maybe turn to a rival, heretic group. Also in the middle ages there was often a pope and an antipope, the result of differences in doctrine, conflict between pope and emperor and everybody declaring everybody else a heretic.
well the dude at the end just called the population of Bulgaria Cyprus Georgia Greece Macedonia Moldova Montenegro Romania Serbia not europeans... or not Christians ...so what is he a professor
We don't. To reason about anything, we need to start with some assertions we assume to be true, otherwise logic will lead us nowhere. Mathematicians call those assumptions axioms, physicists call those principles, and theologians call them dogmas.
To me, being the Pope is much like being the President of America; no matter what happens, you will always be that job. Having been President or Pope, people will always remember that job, and that's what you will always be. I think the Pope can still step down, but he will always be Pope
You know I always tend to disagree (strongly) with what is being said but it's nonetheless interesting. It's obvious you guys know allot more about the subject than any of my previous teachers.
Just trying to be fair here. Brady asked some endearing questions in a extremely crude manner. Shouldn't interviews be about *exploring the subject matter* and not about making the interviewee as uncomfortable and assertively belligerent as possible. I'm just saying, particularly at the beginning of the interview, he could of been less detached and much less contemptuous.
Hmm... good question... "Lude" means "a pill or tablet containing methaqualone" according to my dictionary. In this case, I guess he meant "rude" but did not write it down correctly ;)
You'd actually have to give us an objective and coherent moral system before any judgements may be made. Even if you do, we'd need more before we accept your system as the 'most rational', 'best' or 'the true'.
That would just be dumb of them(on all sorts of fronts), this channel is specifically meant to be an objective source on bible information, what they believe doesn't matter, they assume its real or not depending on whats convenient for an example. But it's like theologians. Not that it was a bad question to ask.
Lets start again, with the same attitude to science. That everything we know could be wrong. Now we must discern which religion is the correct one. How do we do this?
No, if a priest stops believing, he can't be a priest anymore. Or a bishop. Or a freaking pope. If they no longer believe in god, and they no longer can handle living the lie that they believe in god, they can't be a priest. So they MUST give it up.And there is something called the clergy project for those who do.
There's a documentary being first aired this month (by HBO IIRC) called Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God that looks deeply into the paedophilia situation. Correlation does not equal causation, but still...
No, he's a hater because he asks lude questions in the interview. I wasn't threatened. You're the only one making personal assumptions here, I stated what I saw. No need to get personal.
Wow. Just because he asks the questions that anyone who hasn't been indoctrinated into believing that, just because the church says something it must be so, doesn't mean he's a hater, or that the questions are meandering or pretentious. It is just sad how threatened you are by even the slightest questioning of your beliefs that you have to result to interpreting them as such. Newsflash: the majority of people on this planet think what you believe is just plain wrong.
jebel el laws, there is a lot of debate amongst the specialists over that it has been debunked several times,You do know that the only place in history that any record of the Israelite being kept as slaves in Egypt or their exodus through the desert is in the bible, let me ask you this though, do you believe in the god Baal ? As said you make the claim that i am sinning yet have provided no proof for that remark, one could make the same claim about you that you sin and like it.
I've heard some pretty crazy theories recently regarding the popes and the happenings in revelation. The current stepping down pope being the 7th king... The near future will be very interesting.
> no man really knows with certainty of anything Oh sweet relativism. Maybe we know nothing for certain, still we can consider certain things more likelier than others, e.g. that the earth is quite round vs. Russel's teapot. > well thats where it all boils down to belief Not every belief is the same, some are more irrational than others.
Brady - so cavorting and taking drugs makes one an atheist? It's sad that church people are seen as inherently good, and us atheists are the societal dregs. I know you didn't mean it exactly like that, but I thought it worth mentioning. The Father seems like a decent chap, but I really can't see how anyone can buy this stuff. I really don't get it. Thanks for all your videos and channels. peace
But baal is a god mentioned as such in the bible, you don't have to worship him but you have to believe he exists its in your holy book and surly that could not be wrong, teh fact that they may have found some cities that where destroyed by volcanic activity does not mean anything supporting your book, sorry but that is not proof of a god, try again.
believe it or not, i really attributed it to singing banana! then realised after commenting, oh - thats right - pope resigned. yes really. take care, have a great day/night. regards.

Love the Lord with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself! End of subject! This is religion, in all forms! Great Video, I love his humbleness! Nottingham is truely blessed!
Brady is excellent at asking good questions!
1. It's good to see you again Bibledex!
2. Thanks for using the word "cavorting"
OMG Brady, I have to say I just loved the questions you asked. They were inquisivite, sincere and funny. I learned something AND I had a great laugh.
I hope you don't find this question pretentious, but what does "lude" mean?
PS: If I had no interest in the subject matter or wanted to stifle it, I wouldn't make the video in the first place.
- Brady
good to be back! :)
I love the question "why does he make the Pope difficult?"
Really interesting interview!
Brady, just out of interest, can you do a video about what you and each of the interviewees on this channel actually believe? Or is that too much of a flamewar risk?
It may also be an abbreviation of Honda Prelude, although I'm not sure how that would work in context :-p
How many channels do you have Brady?!?
Watched a total of 3 seconds of this video on a RUclips recommendation. I knew it was a University of Nottingham production. Subscribed.
I find it interesting that the justification for the nature of the conclave is vary similar to a justification you might hear for fascism. How is the proton to electron mass ratio evidence for the existence of the Christian diety? (that's what you seem to imply, anyway)

Good questions, good answers, all very interesting! Thank you.
Yes, I love seeing a new bibledex video. They are rare but appreciated.

Maybe this is the start of more frequently uploaded bibledex videos.

When we vote, we are attempting to do it based on our own understanding. Acts 1_26 And they gave lots for them; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
the best answers come from shocking questions, the less "normal" the questions are, the more in depth people will answer
You are misunderstanding the use of the word theory. The difference is that one can easily question axioms and principles, but theologians and the religious get a little uppity when you question dogma.

But if the deacons are merely mediators of God's will in choosing the new pope, does it mean that deacons do not have free will?
I didn't think you made a distinction between religions.
Looking forward to more of these!
Couldnt the trends in DNA also be explain by a craftsman using the same techniques and materials to build multiple things?
I don't think we can... You will require an infinite amount of evidence in order to be absolutely certain of anything, and we cannot have infinite when we are finite beings. no, it took a Papal resignation!
There's a documentary being first aired this month (by HBO IIRC) called Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God that looks deeply into the paedophilia situation.
Correlation does not equal causation, but still...
why do people have the idea that God is democratic ? He does' nt wait for Man to "vote" before he does his will.
Nice explanation of the indelible mark on the soul!
Well I'm sure you had something in mind when you replied.
What dogmas do we start with?
You got him there, Brady. Such innocent questions...
Why is there a pope?
Brady reppin' Mcdonalds in this vid ;)
The cardinals come from every corner of the earth. Last time I checked the earth was a sphere, which don't have corners. What now Brady?
but is the ex pope still king?
I love this guy. So calm and happy...
No, he's a hater because he asks lude questions in the interview.

Nuns don't have an 'order': they live in a 'state'.
Okay, thank you for explanation. I'm an atheist too, but I wondered if this is scepticism-free zone :)

Not every belief is the same, some are more irrational than others.
He seemed to have a hard time answering questions.
Brady, you are talking as if this "god" character was real.

How ridiculous. I really thought that Catholics had more sense than this.
Funny questions, Brady!
But they were informative.
But baal is a god mentioned as such in the bible, you don't have to worship him but you have to believe he exists its in your holy book and surly that could not be wrong,

Very nice vid Brady, thanx

Sorry, I don't recognize your authority as Governor of the Internet.
Besides, I think you'll find that the debate (really discussion) was about evolution, not about religion.
Love the Lord with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself! End of subject! This is religion, in all forms! Great Video, I love his humbleness! Nottingham is truely blessed!
it's for people with access to the internet
You left out Nuns in people who have an order.
As you say its all down to belief and we will not know till we are dead
So have fun be good and may your lord bless you
is just interesting things about christianity(doesn't assume the bible is true except for hypothetical reasons), its for anyone interested.
Priests, pastors and ministers talking like there where living in Lala-land. Awesome.
