'Usually' is not the same as 'always.' 'Usually,' it's a good idea to not conflate terms. Though I agree with what your point seems to be, it's important to be as precise as possible with critiques. This is the essence of honesty - and the hallmark of civil debate.
Are you going to do a series on the codes in the Bible e.g. the very middle verse in the Bible was something significant in the Psalms (can't remember :P) or how John 6:66 is "From that time many of His followers no longer followed Him"... Dang, i forgot what it's called, but it's like a specialized study for "cracking the code" in the Bible.....

one thing not mentioned here is that not all manuscripts agree on 666 being the number of the beast, some of the manuscripts of revelations instead have 616.
Alas, I am unable to provide links to things that I learned in college history classes. I am sure that, if you research it a bit, you can find info about the historicity of the later Hebrew books.

When it comes to the New Testament, the idea that the *gospel accounts* were written to be symbolic/allegorical stories is just flawed. The gospel books are clearly intended to be read as historical accounts. The Book of Acts is explicitly a historical book. Likewise in the old testament, the books are either books of poetry, history, law etc. The whole "Bible is one big symbolic story used to teach people stuff" view is based on misunderstanding of the structure and character of the Bible.
There were 40 authors and it was written over a period of about 1,600 years all continuing the same concepts and morals without ever contradicting any previous text. Man simply cannot do that alone.
In the Numberphile video titled "666" you mentioned the little known number that i had come accross several years ago, 616. In this video (from 3:33 on), you mentioned Revelations chapter 16 and the 6th angel (so a 6 and a 16). My question is, Was there any particular reason as to why you chose that verse, or was it just a play on the 616 number?
@Denver1928 That is a little misleading since the oldest existing manuscripts only date to the 4th or 5th century. In the 2nd century Irenaeus wrote that 666 is the correct number, not 616.
Growing up as a Christian I always loved the idea of Revelations being about our future and the end of the era that people are currently in. I've been a little reluctant to let go of that perspective since learning about the true purpose of Revelations. It's a bit of a let down.
That green hill is actually what is called a "TEL" which translates to "mound". These TEL are mounds of remains built up over hundreds of years by new settlements being built in older ones on the same site. Har Megido itself is near by.

And that's why the Nero interpretation is so strong--there are two different spellings of Nero's name, and one produces 616 while the other 666. And it does so just using the straightforward rules of Jewish mysticism, not some convoluted meaning.
Actually it is not explicitly said that Armageddon is the location of the "final battle" in Revelation. What the passage says is that it was the gathering place of the Kings of the world who were deceived by demonic spirits and activity. The gathering could have been for battle or it could be for the preparation of battle. Also Joel 3:2 says that God gathers all the nations at the Valley of Jehoshaphat to be judged. But is that the final battle or aftermath? It's hard to say.
Reading Edgar Cayce's interpretation of the book of Revelation (of JESUS CHRIST) ((mentioned in the FIRST verse...)) is very interesting... Check it out if you want another interesting interpretation of this incredible book...
Should be stated though, this Trinitarian doctrine first appears as a debate among theologians around ~300 CE, and first declared official doctrine (in a rudimentary form) in May of 325 CE in Nicea. From there the Nicean formula was generationally developed, particularly by Marcellus and Anthanasius, which is why it first became a prominent doctrine in Greek Orthodoxy, and features less so in Roman Catholicism/Protestantism.
So why trust any book over a 100 years old? You shouldn't trust a story merely because of age, nor should you dismiss it for the same reason. Many things are believed to have happened in history and we have to trust the documents we have available. Some can be proven via artifacts and such, but many events cannot be.
I wouldn't argue you are trolling personally. But "not finding meaning" isn't why i am an atheist. Its not about something having some personal meaning. its about being verifiable to be likely true. and that is it. for all i know, someone could get meaning from hallucinations or from misinformed ideas of reality, or even for not seriously believing but still professing a belief etc. Stories written down decades after (at best) aren't good enough to substantiate claims especially if they disagree
The Bible's root can be translated into Library. They are all separate stories that flow together as if one story, at least the Hebrew Bible. While most of the early stories maybe myth, there is archaeological proof for things that happened during and following the rule of King David. Such stories include the rule of Solomon, the exile to Babylon,ext.
And just how was my comment a troll? I was trying to point out that many atheists act as if no one has ever addressed their arguments before. Every faith has answers to both the simple and the profound questions. There is a difference between dismissing all religion out of hand and not finding meaning in it's premise or teachings. But, having looked up the dating of Revelation, I see that what you are referring to is the "late" date, and there are problems with it. Revelation refers to a still living sixth emperor, which would be Nero. Furthermore, it refers to Jerusalem and its temple as if they were still standing, which dates it before 70 AD.

I agree. Whether you insist your holy books are history books like Judaism, Christianity and Islam or metaphor and parable like Hinduism and (most) Buddhism, they all suppose the existence of a higher power in some form whose existance cannot be proved.
Jesus' divinity is referred to in terms besides "son of God". For example 2 Peter 1:1 refers to Jesus as "Our God and savior" and Hebrews 1:8 interprets an Old Testament verse as God talking to Jesus calling Jesus God. So the early Christians definitely thought of Jesus as divine. Hope this answers your question, cheers.
One of the basics of any philosophy is that there will be paradoxes, parts that seemingly contradict and require you to think about and resolve them. When someone says the Bible doesn't contradict itself, they mean that it is possible to make a coherent philosophy out of the text. This isn't as big a deal as these people claim, of course. And you could have said that instead of attacking the guy. If you actually were going to prove anything, you should have show that this trait is not unique.
I´m not certain about a 666 - Nero thing, because John wrote the Revelations around 96 AC, when Dominitanius was the ruler, and after him Nerva. Nero died in 68 AC, so it would be unlogical for John to refer to Nero with the number 666.

Well the Bible couldn't have been written as one big story, intended to be read together. The books were canonised at different points, and only gathered together into what we now call "the bible" in the 4th century (a document called the Latin Vulgate).
For catholics that is.As I understand, no form of protestantism accepts the holy trinity. And according to the Bible, Jesus is not supposed to be worshipped, he came with humility and bearing a message to direct people to God, therefore it is alright presenting respect and admiration to Christ, but the worship is to God. Although, in catholic custom, Jesus is part of God as well, and you can understand the confusion there. Cheers from a fellow atheist

Tracking down the sources they do not go back before the late third century, which is not early, and can hardly be preferred to Irenaeus comments (about 100 years earlier) in this case. Just another case of the popular press running after a 'science and the bible' story.

The story of Moses is good, but Hollywood missed a trick not doing Revelation. We have the CGI for it now too.

The problem with that is that one person's good maybe another person's bad and vice versa. Then which is good is the real good? And of course they believed there was a god. DCLXVI is 666 in Roman numerals ... X E F in Greek ... not sure about Hebrew. Arabic numbers are what we use but John probably didn't. Getting a name out of those combinations is a head scratcher. I am an atheist, who has studied many faiths. You're trying to reconcile a contradiction the greatest thinkers of all religions have struggled with. How can there be an all knowing being who grants mankind free will. The Christian explanation is that grace is granted by God, not by faith or good deeds. I personally like the Hindu idea that God became the Universe (including us) and in the process forgot he did it so he could more fully participate in his creation. How could God go to Hell?
a nice comentary i read about the number of the beast is the following 666 is spelled in the original text as χξς the first and last letters of the word christ χ(ριστό)ς enclosing the snake like letter ξ so 666 is someone who looks and behaves like the christ but is actually a serpant

A video might be able to make arguments, but it is you who has to take those arguments and apply them. Generally considered the most common phrase in the Bible (about 350 times) is "Do not be afraid" which could also be translated to "Don't panic" ;)

And, yes, you are by definition not thinking for yourself because you didn't actually do any thinking. You linked a video. A video might be able to make arguments, but it is you who has to take those arguments and apply them. That you couldn't do so in text form does not do well to mean you actually thought about them and tried to disprove them, like a thinking person would.
