  • ΝΑΥΠΛΙΟ, Ο ΛΕΩΝ ΤΩΝ ΒΑΥΑΡΩΝ / ΝΑΥΠΛΙΟ, THE LION OF THE BAVARIANS.
The lion is located in Nafplio, specifically in the welfare area on Michael Iatro Street, very close to the All Saints Cemetery.
It is a great sculptural monument of modern times, which is carved out of natural rock.
The sculpture is dedicated to the memory of the Bavarian soldiers who died of typhus in the years 1833 and 1834. This is also shown in the inscription written in German and located below the sculpture.
The sleeping lion was created by the Bavarian Sculptor Christian Siegel and is considered to be a copy of the Lucerne Lion, the work of Bertolt Tormaldsen, who was inspired by ancient Greek models such as the lion found on the gia. It is worth noting that Christian Siegel was the first Professor of Sculpture at the Athens Polytechnic.
The lion of the Bavarians created in the years 1840 and 1841 sponsored by the King of Bavaria frontal of the first, who was the father of King Otto. When Otto arrived in Greece he was accompanied by Bavarian officials, courtiers and soldiers. A large number of these barbarian soldiers died from the typhus epidemic and so this monument was created in their memory. Soldiers and they were caught in the cemetery of all saints which is located very close to the north-east of the evangelistria church, which are known as Bavarian graves. Some years later the bones were transferred to the crypt of the Catholic Church of the Transfiguration located in the old city of Nafplion.
In front of the monument there is a small park with pine trees and other plants.
The lion has been carved into a rectangular niche with great detail and behind its muzzle has been carved a circular shield, which is easily distinguishable.
So when you find yourself in Nafplio and tour it, it is worth taking a walk by the Bavarian lion that has been sleeping since 1840.
