The Corinth Canal is the canal that connects the Saronic gulf with the Corinthian gulf and is located at the location of the Isthmus of Corinth, a little east of the homonymous city.
The construction years of the canal span from 1880 to 1893.
The canal is 6346 M long, 24.6 M wide at sea level, 21.3 M deep at the bottom, while its depth ranges from 7.5 to 8 M. Every year, approximately 12,000 ships pass through the canal.
The idea of opening the canal already existed from the time of Periander in 602 his challenges. However, the first one who tried to implement his project was Nero in 66 AD in the plans of Julius Caesar and Caligula. After the death of Nero, Herod of Atticus continued the effort, but he abandoned it.
In ancient times, in order to avoid the circumnavigation of the Peloponnese, the same project was built between the Isthmus Wall and the precinct which was called ‘’Diolkos’’. ‘’Diolkos’’ was a road through which goods and small ships were transported. It had been built by Periander, and was a paved road, lined with timbers, on which ships glided with the help of grease. The ships that passed through there paid tolls and it was the most important income of Corinth.
During the time of the Kapodistrias' rule, the construction study of the canal was assigned to an engineer. Kapodistrias himself had foreseen the importance that the opening of the bridge would have on the development of Greece. However, the expenditure was then estimated at 40 million gold francs. Finding this amount was difficult at the time and so the attempt was abandoned.
Next to the canal and very close to the old bridge, there is a very beautiful landscaped area of the Peloponnese region with a tourist kiosk to inform visitors.
The idea for the construction of the canal was revived in 1869 after the opening of the Suez Canal. Then the zaime government passed a law on appropriating the isthmus and the project would be undertaken by a company or private individual and would be exploited after its construction. Thus, a study of the project was made by the Hungarian general Israel Turku, who founded the international company of the Sea Canal of Corinth. The official works were inaugurated on 23/04/1882 in the presence of King George the first and due to a lack of funds. The project was completed by the company of Andreas Syngrou in 1893.
We must mention that the construction of the canal was also a result of the development policy of Prime Minister Harilaos Trikoupis, who, with the construction of large infrastructure projects, aimed to create a modern and economically developed state.
It is worth noting that at the end of the Second World War during their withdrawal, the Germans in the first ten days of October 1944 blew up the railway and road bridges, threw train wagons at a point in the canal to block it and set off explosions at the bottom of the foreport .
Reconstruction of the road bridge began in 1947, when the army engineering school took over the project.
In modern times many ships use It is a fact, however, that many large commercial ships cannot cross it.
