Tolo is a beautiful seaside village with about thousands of inhabitants. It is a tourist place located very close to the city of Nafplion, about 11 km south of it and also the distance from Athens is 144 km.
According to tradition, the name of the area is attributed to a Frankish bishop, John Tolos. Around 1200, after Christ, who lived for years in the area, was buried on top of the mountain in Romvy island.
Its permanent residents are mainly engaged in tourism and fishing.
After the liberation of Greece, a resolution of Kapodistrias was created by which refugees from Crete settled in the area, who, persecuted for several years, had no fixed place of residence in the Peloponnese and elsewhere and lived as penitents.
The settlement was originally called Minoan, to say the name of the mythical King of Crete, Minos. This name was not preserved and eventually the older name of the area prevailed. Today most of the inhabitants of the area are of Cretan origin.
The beach of Tolos extends for about one kilometer from the organized beach of ‘’fine sand’’ and ends at the picturesque port of the village where fishing boats and various excursion boats enter.
It is also worth visiting the Church of Agia Kyriaki which is built on the hill, in a beautiful spot and is only 5 minutes from the center of Tolo. From there you will admire the magnificent view towards the Gulf of Tolos, where the little islamnds of Koronisi and Romvy.
In antiquity, homer is the first to mention the Gulf of Tolos and the ancient Asini. According to sources, the current tolo was built near the ruins of the ancient city. During the Byzantine period, the port of the area began to be used. Then, during the time of the Venetian occupation, the Venetians used Ormos as a second naval station and their fleet. The event took place in the area in 1686 and before the world was created when, during the Sixth Venetian-Turkish War, the troops of the Venetian General Morosini landed on the Deserted Tote beach of Tolo, from where they then headed further north to capture Nafplion and Argos.
In the bay of Tolu is a cluster of small islands, Koronisi Romvi, Daskalio and further out in the open Plateia island. On top of Koronisi island is the small church of the holy Apostles, where every year on June 30 the solemn divine service takes place and boats take people to the small island. The largest island of the Gulf, Rhomboi is a rich dense forest in the middle of it and there are also remains of Venetian fortifications. The island of Daskalio is located south of Rome. The little church of the life-giving spring is built there, which allegedly functioned as a secret school during the Turkish occupation.
Tolo has excellent tourist infrastructure with hotels, rooms for rent, cafes, taverns, bars.
