  • Η σπηλιά του Νταβέλη / The cave of Davelis
The so-called cave of Davelis is located in the southwestern part of Penteli’s mountain at an altitude of 720 meters. The cave initally did not have a passage to the outside of the mountain. The interior of the cave was discovered by the Ancient Greeks when they carved the mountain and the production of the Pentelic Marble. It was named after the formidable Listarchos Davelis, who allegedly lived there.
In the Byzantine years, it was a hermitage of ascetics, to whom it also owes its older name, cave of sand, and it is said that some of these ascetics lived until the end of their lives in the depths of the cave.
Her entrance is impressive. To its right is the church of Agios Nikolaos with murals of original ethnography from the thirteenth century and the hermitage of Agios Spyridon with post-Byzantine works.
There are rumors that the cave communicates through arcades with the palace of the Duchess of Placentia or even with Athens, which is not confirmed.
let's say a few words about the robber Christos Daveli, who was born around 1832 in Steiri Boiotia, at the age of 15, he worked as a milk seller and a servant in the monastery of Penteli. His illegal activity began when he joined the gang that operated in Attica, Evia, Boeotia and Fthiotida. His action culminated in 1855 with the kidnapping of the French captain Berto. Davelis was killed in a clash with a detachment of the gendarmerie in 1856 near the village of Zemeno in Boeotia. The detachment was led by his own friend and former Protopalikaro of John the Great, who had left the gang and joined the gendarmerie. After a confrontation with Davelis. for the eyes, as the legend says, of the Italian Countess Louisa Bancoli.
The mountain on which it is located, as we said, is Penteli, which is the second highest mountain in Attica after Parnitha. In ancient times, it was also called ‘Vrilissos’ or ‘Vrlitto’. Its highest peak is the tower above Gar at 1109 M. It is famous for its marbles from which they were made all the monuments of the Acropolis.
