I was in the Air Force and myself and another Air Force buddy drove an hour north from our base and waited in the Alley before anyone showed up. We ended up chit chatting with the guitar player Tracy G. We finally got in line and got our tickets. When we went inside we notice everyone was sitting down in seats (it was technically a theater so it's understandable). We sat down and my friend and I both looked at each other and said "Why is everyone sitting down?" We got up and stood right in front of Dio's microphone front row center against the stage. The lights went out, the band came out and started playing the beginning chords of Double Monday. Then Dio came out grabbed the microphone stand spun and bounced it off his knee. It spun in the air and he slams back down on the stage and proceeded to kick out ass for the next 2 1/2 hours. I got to meet him after the show and he was amazing. He truly does treat you like you're the only person in the room when he is addressing you directly and isn't distracted by everyone else around him.
Got to see Dio in late 90s in small venue. Had back stage passes. Great show. And he was a genuinely great guy. So friendly, personable, was concerned that we had good time at show and wanted to make sure we were entertained.
A day or two before this performance they were playing in Austria, Ritchie Blackmore took offense at a security guard manhandling a girl at the front of the stage, so he lashed out and kicked him with that big platform-shewed foot and broke his jaw. They were detained by the authorities and didn't make it on time, if I recall right, this show didn't start until after midnight.

At the show before this one in I believe Austria, Blackmore got in a physical altercation with one of the promoters and got arrested and thrown in jail. As his lawyers are trying to get him released from jail this show in Munich was ready to go. The band, crowd, opening band was all in place and still no Blackmore at the venue. Hay, great song, thanks for that, yes it's Rainbow but you said it in you're comment, so what's the problem! I wait for a next song. Greetings from Amsterdam.
#rainbow Gates of Babylon from the San Francisco bay area. First time I heard this it was early morning before sunrise and I was driving east through some desert in the south west. A friend gave me a mixed cassette tape to check out and this song came on just as the sun was rising. I was so mesmerized I didn't realize I was gradually speeding up and didn't catch myself until I was just over 100 mph. The song still gives me chills when I hear it.
Thank you SO much for this! I've probably heard 20 live versions of that song either recorded or in person, and that was the best performance I've ever heard. Ronnie truly sets the bar for vocalists that no one has yet been able to hit. It literally gave me chills, and it's 100°! And I'm no Diophyte, either. His voice has been and probably will always remain unequalled. He was a phenomenon. Thank you also for your amazing appreciation and description of what made him so great. His funeral was one of the most bittersweet and memorable days of my life. He inspired my vocal career from the first time I heard him sing "Last in Line" at age 12. But, sadly, his voice died about a decade before he did. He was truly the closest thing to a vocal god this earth has ever known. People can't even appreciate how incredibly difficult it is to hit those notes because they sound so full, effortless, and powerful when he sings them that, until they try to hit them themselves, the full glory of his gift goes unappreciated. I'm so glad the two of you got it. If you liked that one, check out Stargazer. Wow!
So so glad u 2 got to get taste of this concert..I will say it again. You two need to get the full DVD concert of this Munich 1977 and have a private watch of this EPIC Concert..
I saw this concert in 1976 Sydney it cost me $10 so went the next night too because I couldn't believe what I witnessed the night before!! Still to this day best by far concert I've ever ever seen and I still thought I went blind on Still I'm sad 👌 these days will never be replicated but geez I was so lucky to witness this
This is RAINBOW playing a Deep Purple Song. David Coverdale (now Whitesnake) was the original singer on the record. Funny fact to this perfomance: Richie was still wearing the same clothes as two days before at the gig in vienna. He was arrested because he kicked a security guy. The concert in munich started with a delay of 3 or 4 hours!

I saw this tour not only to re-live some of Deep Purple's greatest hits but to witness some of these awesome performers: Ritchie on guitars, Dio on vocals, Cozy Powell on percussion, Tony Carey on keyboards. At that point Rainbow was indeed a supergruop!
Great feedback on the song/emotions. Sorry to hear about your difficult family circumstances. I don’t know if you know that Ritchie got out of jail just in time to do this gig. (hence his extra exuberance throughout) He got in a tussle with a security guard at the previous show who had manhandled a female fan near the stage. He broke his jaw unfortunately. Ritchie was hidden in one of the gig cases by the roadies to avoid the police but was eventually arrested. The tour was almost cancelled. He was released without charge (magistrate must have been a Purple fan 😀) I saw Rainbow on this tour. Glad this film exists for you. Ritchie seemed to have been set free by leaving Purple. I often wonder if they will be remembered far into the future. I’ve been a Deep Purple fan since 1969. I saw them on the U.K. Machine head tour in 1972 when they were at their peak. It’s “true” what their producer Martin Birch said about them a few years ago .... “Deep Purple were the best at what they did”. Music is very subjective of course and statements like that can sound a bit over the top. Personally I’ve never seen a better live rock band in decades of regular gig going. Strangely Purple have never been recognised in general culture the way bands like say Pink Floyd are. However someone once asked a Chinese official during the 100th anniversary of Communist rule if communism had been successful. He replied “It’s too early to say”. Over the long haul I think Purple’s legacy will outlast many of their contemporaries due to their musicality/virtuoso level playing and their sense of humour 😀. Their classical leanings will help (check out their Concerto for group and orchestra by the late Jon Lord, their organist. (The 1969 and 1999 performances are on DVD/RUclips). Ritchie Blackmore brought this song over with him from Deep Purple, but this was Rainbow performing the song. It was a common performance for them in the late 70's at live performances, and is also found on their Greatest Hits album.

May favorite Deep Purple/Rainbow song. It was originally on Deep Purples' studio album Burn and sung by David Coverdale but then appeared on Rainbow On Stage with Dio on vocals. I saw Rainbow and Dio perform this live in their very last show. Rainbow only played two songs that night (Kill the King and Mistreated) before leaving and then their next show was cancelled completely and then Dio and Rainbow parted ways. Back to the song, Blackmore was absolutely amazing and it was the best performance of any song I have ever seen live and I've seen a lot of great bands.
Kel-n-Rich Ive been watching your channel for a few months now and love your reactions. Very sorry to learn of your son. I pray the lord will comfort both of you.
This is my very. Favorite singers of all time as far as I'm concerned. For me, this is his best live performance ever. Been a fan since the 1970's RIP Ronnie.
I saw Ronnie several times with Black Sabbath and DIO. The last time was on the Magica tour and he did this as an encore... Craig Goldie did a fantastic job on guitar and Ronnie was just unbelievable. Thanks for bringing back a wonderful memory!
The clarity of Blackmores guitar on this whole DVD was awesome. Grab Live in Munich 1977 if you can. It's a must in anyone's rock and roll library. The many shades of Ritchie's guitar playing......
'On Stage' is basically a PERFECT album. There were so many great live albums released in the '70s - all desert island discs, for sure: DP - Made in Japan; Humble Pie - Filmore; Zep - Song Remains the Same; Thin Lizzy - Live & Dangerous; Priest - Unleashed; AC/DC - If You Want Blood; Jethro Tull - Bursting Out; UFO - Strangers; Whitesnake - Heart of the City; Kiss - Alive I and II; Genesis - Seconds Out; Yes - Yessong....so many more!
I saw Rainbow Live in Brussels, Beligum in 1977 during their European Tour. It was a great line up with Ronnie James Dio, Cozy Powell (Drummer) , and of course of Richie Blackmore (Guitarist). I would never forget it. Thanks guys for the memories....
Saw Dio and Rainbow in Bremerhaven (Germany) in 1977. It changed my life. I only knew Blackmore and then explored that little guy with that gigantic voice. Love him !!!
Sorry to hear about the passing of your son ! I have noticed that V on the wall being a huge fan of V guitars and i play them myself although Dean´s version of the classic shaped V. Im also a huge fan of Ronnie James Dio and Rainbow of course, to me he was the greatest metal singer that has ever lived \m/.
I kind of prefer the 1974 version. The same song but the vibe is very different in front of about 400,000 people. Nobody’s vocals are better than Dio’s. But Coverdale sounds soooo tortured. Of course Ritchie’s guitar cries right along with him. Also, the back story Blackmore tells about this concert is priceless.
Thanks for sharing this as i have not seen this before. A classic Deep Purple song (originally sung by David Coverdale which is definitely worth checking out) performed by Rainbow with the awesome Ronnie James Dio at a time when they were all in their absolute prime. God Rock is a great way to refer to this Kel x
the original had Ritchie Blackmore Jon Lord Ian Paice and sitting in for Glover and Gillan was Glenn Hughes on Bass and David Coverdale (Later Whitesnake) on Vocals.
had the privilige to see the band DIO in a small crowded club in the mid 90s, i have never been so dehydrated after a show in my life. it was amazing...
Ronnie, Ritchie, Cozy......a magic moment in time never to be repeated
Very true
You've just witnessed the "GREATEST LIVE VOCAL PERFORMANCE"...... By the GREATEST ROCK VOCALIST EVER!

Ive been watching your channel for a few months now and love your reactions.
The "Tape Recorder in the back" is an AIWA Reel-to-Reel that Ritchie used as a Delay Unit for the guitar!!!
James Raleigh He also said that it gave his guitar a treble boost that he couldn’t quite get from anything else. 😀
This has always been one of my favorite live albums EVER!
And you just did a reaction to my favorite performance on that album.
Thank you
The clarity of Blackmores guitar on this whole DVD was awesome. Grab Live in Munich 1977 if you can. It's a must in anyone's rock and roll library. The many shades of Ritchie's guitar playing......
Omg 🙏🙏🙏 I had no idea about your son. My deepest condolences 🙏🙏🙏
not much better than this. This is mindblowing
DIO. The best heavy metal singer. What a frontman! We miss him so much
Make sure to listen to the version from the live Rainbow - "On Stage" album. It is the better version, just not filmed.
'On Stage' is basically a PERFECT album. There were so many great live albums released in the '70s - all desert island discs, for sure:
DP - Made in Japan; Humble Pie - Filmore; Zep - Song Remains the Same; Thin Lizzy - Live & Dangerous; Priest - Unleashed; AC/DC - If You Want Blood; Jethro Tull - Bursting Out; UFO - Strangers; Whitesnake - Heart of the City; Kiss - Alive I and II; Genesis - Seconds Out; Yes - Yessong....so many more!
@@benedictdonald4338 Whitesnake " Heart Of The City " was released in 1980.
*The BEST Rock n Roll Singer Ever!!!!*
The better perfomance I've whatched. R J. DIO, LOVE you forever (La mejor actuación en directo que he visto, R J. DIO, te amaré siempre).
42 years later we are still amazed by this. Extraordinary musicians - not just "a band"
Dio takes no prisoners. Holy smokes....add Cozy beating the crap out of the drums.
Whenever my mate and I are going to a gig, we have pre-drinks at his place and pop this DVD on. Best live performance ever.
RIP Cozy & Ronnie
Cannot forget about Bob Daisley on bass guitar, great bass player and song writer..
And Australian too 😜👌👌
He replaced jimmy bain after the australian tour ...bob co wrote crazy train with ozzy and was founder of King Crimson etc a real gun
I lost my son and have 3 VS a Schenker Dean a tobacco and a Gibson, weird.
Gates Of Babylon will not disappoint :) , absolute classic.
Simply the best Rock singer forever.
Epic, Rainbow + Dio
Deep purple in Califórnia Jam 1974 !!!
You gotta check out Catch the Rainbow from the same concert.
I love the 'rainbow rising' album, every song a classic
Dio is a god of rock, you heard the song of Rainbow , A Light in the Black ? I advise you, this is something unreal
the original had Ritchie Blackmore Jon Lord Ian Paice and sitting in for Glover and Gillan was Glenn Hughes on Bass and David Coverdale (Later Whitesnake) on Vocals.
Ponyboy Curtis best version ever!
Best version in my opinion: Deep Purple Made in Europe
This is not deep purple it's rainbow
had the privilige to see the band DIO in a small crowded club in the mid 90s, i have never been so dehydrated after a show in my life. it was amazing...
Was fortunate to see every Rainbow tour with Dio. I was 14 the first time. Amazing to say the least.
In my opinion, it is the best vocal performance in the history of hard rock...
I appreciate this more than you can possibly know I will say again ronnie grew up in my hometown
R.I.P...HOLY DIVER
You guys are such an amazing couple... Real relationship goals for me. Thanks for the great video
Really love your vids , keep it up 🤘😎🤘
