Blackmore is wearing the same clothes He wore 3 nights earlier. He had just gotten out of an Austrian jail For breaking a security guard's jaw with his foot. This was going to be a big concert and filmed in Germany. Didn't start until 12:30 AM everybody waited they knew Blackmore was driving from Austria. He still blew their socks off. Definitely one of the best guitarists to ever walk this planet.

Ritchie Blackmore is my favorite guitarist. You probably didn't pick on Dio's intro where he was saying something about song being originally from "the name escapes me" which is in reference to the song being originally on Blackmore's previous band Deep Purple's Burn album. Blackmore left Deep Purple and used Dio and his band Elf on Blackmore's first album before firing everyone except Dio. BTW, the drummer here is the late, great Cozy Powell.

I was at very last Rainbow live show with Ronnie James Dio as vocalist. It was at the Palladium in New York City and they opened with Kill the King and then did Mistreated which was an extended song live and included what some accounts say is a song called Blues but I just count it as an extended Mistreated. Anyway, after the song Ronnie apologized and said they could not continue like this the band left and the show was over. I've read a couple different accounts on why they cut the show short. In conclusion their next show was cancelled and then Dio would leave Rainbow before the next tour. The two songs I saw were great, especially Mistreated where Blackmore was incredible on guitar.

Listing all of the different bands those guys ended up playing in during their careers reads like a "who's who" of music. The word "supergroup" wasn't even penned and used until decades later. Ritchie saw a bouncer abusing somebody in the crowd and walked tothe end of the stage and kicked thebouncer in the head, breaking his jaw. Fun fact: this performance was done way early after midnight. Due to the fact that mere hours before Ritchie Blackmore was in an Austrian jail after an incident with a security guard at the gig who hit a female fan . Blackmore was in jail for 2 days and was released and they rushed to this show in Munich which was being filmed for a concert program.

Whitesnake's David Coverdale sang the song originally when he was in Deep Purple, but Ronnie's version blows David's vocal out of the water!

    • @Nissardpertugiu
      @Nissardpertugiu 3 года назад

      No , both great .
David version is heavier and darker .
More bottom and gravel , raw .
Dio had similar techniques in some ways but another register . However he s more classical here..
In ELF he was more comparable to David in that sense .
Songs like Love me like a woman .
It would be great if in that stuff Dio & Coverdale did a duo ...
But Tenors can't equal Coverdale completly , they lack of that darkness bottom to it .
Dio and Halford had more of that as they were older , around 40 , 45 , 50's... when they kind of crossed the line towards a more baritonish register.
Also Dio had 35 here . So more developped in his command , as you know, he was a professional since 1958 .
So in 1977 , he had like around 19 , 20 years of career right ?
David was 23 or even 22 depending moment of the year in 1974 , just was hired by DP the year before , playing in bar bands .
But when he started to devellop and mature in stormbringer tour 1975 , and Come taste the band in 1976 , his tone is warmer and open and his range , high range that he always had , increased in Power and range too . Its blue print whitesnake .
      Then in 1977 / 1978 /1979 ...
In early whitesnake i don't think Coverdale is blew out of the water by Dio .

David is the original and the one filled with tons of raw blues emotion. Dio's version is alot more theatrical, and he uses his technical expertise magnificent. I love both versions as they are so different and from 2 of my favorite vocalists. The common denominator..again. is Ritchie. A tough man to deal with, I'm sure. Three things come to mind:
    1. It cannot be overemphasized how influential Dio was.
From the early 70s with Elf over Rainbow, Black Sabbath and his own act Dio in the 80s, back to Black Sabbath
( now called Heaven and Hell ) in the naughts always performing and always laying down the law all the way to his death.
He was and will remain an absolute icon for hundreds of thousands of fans, thousands of rock and metal singers and one of the few along with Jon Lord of Deep Purple who actually earned a musical memorial service with some of the biggest contemporary rock singers and -musicians attending and performing.
    2. There´s a story going round:
When Hitler died and went to Hell Satan asked him: " What have you accomplished to deserve a place at my side?"
Hitler answered: I plunged the entire world into war, turned Genocide into an art form and caused 50 million people to die!"
Satan: " Very good,- you can come sit here at my right side."
Saddam Hussein was executed and went to hell.
Satan asked him: " What have you accomplish to deserve a place at my side?"
Saddam answered: "I weeded out and executed every political opponent, I instigated ethnic cleansing and killed off 400 thousand of my own people and waged a 10 years long war on my neighbouring country using children to clear minefields as living soon to be dead mine sweepers! "
Satan: " Very good,- you can come sit here at my left side."
Ronnie James Dio died and went to hell.
Satan asked him: " What have you accomplished to deserve a place at my side?"
Dio looked at him and said: "Bitch!,- why are you sitting on my throne?"
    2. How about checking out some David Coverdale; Ian Gillan and Glenn Hughes? ( Deep Puple, Whitesnake, Black Sabbath,Ian Gillan Band - solo projects,- tons of material )
Coverdale a lyrical barytone with a huge bottom end and a full masculine timbre to his voice,- Gillan a high operatic tenor with one THE most famous screams in the entire music world and Hughes a high tenor who sounds like he can belt out notes higher than a coloratura soprano.

Yes, you should also check out the original version with Deep Purple and David Coverdale on vocals. Dio is my favourite singer in the genre, but Coverdale is not halv bad. The only problem with the California Jam recording is that Glenn Hughes is stoned out of his mind and unfortunately decides to screech the song to pieces in the end. But Coverdale is impressing, especially considering his age!

Not even close to comparing to this version of Dio, mainly in technical terms, this version is much superior.

Coverdale’s vocal is great in the original and in concert. But he looks nervous on stage,, maybe because he’s new in the band and didn’t want to piss Blackmore off. Dio just owns the song and stage.

    Great reaction as always.
This is an amazing performance indeed, but i still prefer the original Deep Purple version live at California Jam 74. Dio sings it amazing, but Coverdale and Hughes put so much emotion on the song that it's brilliant, you should give it a go, because it's one of the most amazing live performances ever. Keed up the good work. PS. missing Iron Maiden reactions :)
