We posted the results for week 6 on the article: www.rtings.com/tv/learn/real-life-oled-burn-in-test. About the same as week 4 but slightly more pronounced.
Error in the video: it is a 25% window, not 18%

Can you also check the pixel structures if all six have the exact same panels? Maybe contact 'lesnumeriques' as well for some tips on how to do it properly so the results are actually useful for us readers ;) . There are two distinctly different panels doing the rounds in 2016 and 2017 models ...

Desinho9 - with different panels, do you mean the two different manufacturing plants that i have heard these are produced?? and if so, what's the significance of the differences?

All +55inch OLED panels are LG. and it doesn't matter if its Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Loewe, B&O, or freaking LG them-self, all +55" OLED panels are from LG display, ewen Samsung own qLED partner TCL have also after own studies know asked LG to sell them OLED panels and will carry oled models in there TCL high end 2018 lineup
Hopefully people can also use their brain, and able to put things into perspective, after all Sony Panasonic, Phllips and every freaking big brand beside Samsung have jump on to the OLED wagon and put billions and billions into there OLED lineup.. you gotta be pretty blank if you think the out billion of dollars and all their rep without doing some own research first and its not like Rtings are able to find conclusion they cant (get real) after all its there billion dollar pocket there shall carry if there is a huge problem-
Put things into perspective and give all the market-makers on the TV market som credit, you can bet your ass they offcourse also examine before putting billions into there OLED-linepups and carruy this as there main high end TV.
Ewen Samsung's CEO have here for 2 weeks ago said to Korean news that they will move into OLED, perhaps with LG display for a while like other brands, but only for a while and until they have own alternatives ready. (Samsung are bleeding massively and have just been overtaken by LG here in Europe when it comes to either UHD TVs or +55inch TV, not LG are the biggest player here in 2016, 2017 etc etc, only a few years ago it was opposite where Samsung had like 20% while LG only had 11% here in Scandinavia.. to sum up Samsung TV is bleeding massively.
Ín the end, Rtings measured 6 panels 1 of them got some retentions- & possible burn in signs sign after 280 hours-stresstest and its only faint visible in testcolors and cant not at all be seen in real content.
It is what it is, but put things into perspective, and give professional people & huge brands there do this for a billon-dollar living some credit, these enormous brands with huge stockholders on the stockmarket (you can bet your ass they ofcoruse do there homework, its not like they go blind into this) they are often way more comprihent and with way better insigths and tests that any of us, or ritings for that sake.

Drop the misses attitude light house@, you aint making any sense, and who the freak is "us" lmfao - talk for yourself or get some help to handle all those egoes' - your crumbled little spoiled curling child who been sviped all your life..
Use your brain, dont you think all these second hand vendors there doesnt even produce OLEDs but have to purchase from LG would prefer to keep it as it is and have made there tests and something as basic as above, its redicalus amount of money they put on the stake and you can bet your ass they have made pro & cons estimates vs VA/IPS versus OLEds.
Get real its 1 out of 6 tvs and the one with even dimmed lights, there shows signs of retention in one single colorslide and not in real scene context.. havent you seen the footage above, and why do I have to take you on my shoulder to burp theese basic factors into you.. if you have an view on the matter fair enough, but at least get up on the beat instead of just flawing your gap for my attention., .

You guys made the right choice choosing the LG C7 for this test. Brightest OLED available (which is extremely important considering brightness in OLEDs is not as good as LED), AND the LG C7 also has the best burn-in recovery score. Great combination, great choice made by Rtings.

I think what MAY be happening, is that the original test pattern already caused uneven wear on the screen, but since all the pixels were brand new, this was not visible. As the whole screen started to get exposed to wear, the surrounding parts of the screen started losing some of their brightness and the issue became visible. A bit like how when you set contrast to 100% on a TV, the details get lost, because the whole image gets overdriven a bit, then as you decrease contrast, details start to emerge.

I'm using an LG OLED55C7V for my main computer/xbox one exclusively since 3 months, I watch ~20h of movies/series per weeks and i'm on the pc at least ~10-12h per day at minimum, so yeah lot's of internet navigator or program like Word, Notepad, Excel ...
I calibrated the screen in both sdr and hdr mode and i'm using the game mode 90% of the time.
Oled light is on 18-22 in SDR mode and 100 in HDR mode. (dark room, no window, only rgb led behind the screen)
I play a lot of WoW (and by a lot ... i mean that I have 1158 days of played time on 1 character since 12 years, minimum 4 hours per days), hack&slash like Diablo 3, Grim Dawn, fps like Destiny 2 and RPG like Witcher 3, Assassin's creed ..., I also played Forza games for at least 40h on the oled.
When I don't use the screen or need to afk, I launch few full screen movie on netflix or from my computer and set the standby timer on 4h.
My desktop is a live walpaper that I created and there's no icon on it.
I have absolutely no burn-in (I check it every week), and the tv has been already used 1758 hours exclusively on my PC/Xbox one and with few series/movies.
I bought the same tv for my brother (calibrated like mine), he play a lot with his xbox one x, a lot of Dragon ball FighterZ (lot of yellow/green/red bar in this game LOL) and Star Wars Battlefront II, like more than 5hours per days, watch also ~20h of movies/netflix per weeks and use it a little with his computer for work, no burn-in too.
We have also an OLED77G6V in the living room who has been already used 11328 hours for 85% of live tv and 15% for movies, the tv is on ~24h/24 and few times in stanby mode for 4-6h maximum, there's only a "little" burn in the lower left corner and in the upper right corner who is barely visible in full screen magenta or red color, it's INVISIBLE in normal content. (it's an "RTL" "RTLINFO" logo (the logo is orange/white/red) who is displayed 5-8hours every day since more than 480 days ..., oled light is on 45)
On the 3 tv, i have not seen any image retention, ever. (except the little burn-in on the OLED77G6V and again it's barely visible only on red/magenta full screen color)
Burn-in can occur, yes, but the tv will be sold/changed a long time before you can see it on normal content if the tv is used normally. (if someone play the same game or display a logo fully saturated in red/green/yellow more than 8h per day with an oled light on 60+, yeah it can be a problem)
I live in Belgium (EU) and burn-in are covered by warranty anyway. (I got 1 dead pixel on the first 55c7v delivered, the tv was exchanged by a new one less than 72h after the first delivery)
Oled technology are not for Bright room, put the OLED light on more than 65 in SDR can be "dangerous" and burn-in can occur more quickly.
Thanks for your reviews & tests but your tests are not "real" enought ^^, like the tv with the games, who will gonna play 20h per day on the same game every single days for 6 weeks ? : D (except a zombie ^^)
For a more real test in "game" mode, you need to display one game for 4hours, 2 other games for 3hours each (or more games with less hours), 2hours of movies and at least 6h in standby and 6h of random content. (it's an example for a tv used 18h per day, extreme case)
I will never go back to LED technology (I got a Sony ZD9 before the oled77) or only when the image quality and contrast will be the same as the oled.
Maybe we had 3 super panel of oled, don't know, but so far so good : D
The burn-in is not a problem, even for an "hardcore gamer" like me.

Hi. I have had the problem that the TV on the bottom left exhibited with the lighter shade rectangle in the middle. Mine exhibited it in Magenta, Red and Yellow, primarily most noticeable in red. I had never ever displayed any test pattern and the size and shape of the rectangle in the middle was exactly the same as yours. It was absolutely noticable on broadcast content in things like adverts where the background colour was red. It was sent back to LG and a brand new panel was fitted to my TV and the TV returned.

I got a question with a few lines explaining the reasoning:
It is a widespread opinion among plasma tv users that the first 100-200 hours of use are critical and should be very well taken care of due to the fact that the cells have the highest changes in these first 200 hours.
I do not know if this is the case with the OLED displays but, have you done a 100 to 200 hours pre-test initial safe run? (meaning no logos, full screen content that changes ).

Do these results imply that there is a break-in period, where some optimum screen content should be ran for a specific period of time? In the old days we were told that a new car engine required a break-in period where special driving limitations were to be observed. Is it possible that such treatment on an OLED screen could minimize the possibiity of "burn-in"?

I need your advice, please help me! I want to buy lg c8 but I'm afraid of a burn / residual image, since I will use tv as a monitor to a computer for 5-10 hours a day on average. Almost every day. For example, play mmorpg, use a browser, and watch RUclips. In mmorpg, the skill pane is constantly static and this is very dangerous for oled. I saw a burn only in your tests, I nowhere else saw a burn on the models 2017 oled. And I want a model of 2018. But still I'm afraid that there will be a burn. So I began to think about the model nano cell lg sk9500 2018 with FALD underlay. I want only lg with webOS and magic remote. Qled TVs are good, but only qled q9, but I do not have that much money. Therefore either lg c8 or lg sk9500. Again, the TV will be used as a monitor for 5-10 hours a day. Friends, please tell me yours opinion about this. I will be glad for every comment. I need your advice.
p.s. - The text is translated using google translate, and I hope you understand correctly what I wrote. =)

OLED TVs have *over saturated black colors* on black hairs, black shadows, so on, on natural images (I don't mind about animation movies). TVs' over saturated blackness on very dark areas makes images look unnatural. It's better to well balance black with other colors so that the images look naturally beautiful.

  • @EnricoConca

Burn-in effect is related to different cumulative use, so it is unavoidable whenever the pixel is its own light source: I expect burn-in to be present also in future microLED panels. Backlight also degrades, but it affects all the panel equally, so it isn't noticeable.

in regards to the uniformity being better for max. setting: maybe all pixels are worn out more than at a lower setting, so for the dimmer TV some pixels or area's are brighter depending on the content, so let's assume the TV at max. setting is wearing out all pixel to a higher extend, whereas for the dimmer TV there's a higher variance of use of pixels? so more uniformity issues occur over time?

Some very thought provoking results hmhm. At some point I suggest running an exhaustive, extended "pixel refresher" (or other screen workout) test on some of the worst affected units just to verify whether the visible burn-in on these can _ever_ be removed, unless you think this procedure in light of the prior tests would just be beating a dead horse.

(especially if I will use the Pixel refresher once in a week or so (btw, how often and after how many hours of watching my TV i should do Pixel refresher feature)??

      @Outrider42 6 лет назад +1

      Konstantin V
This is a question they are trying to study with this experiment, because right now we do not have a definitive answer to what causes burn in.
However we have general ideas, and high contrasting images (like strong text) left on the screen for a long while are certainly things that can cause burn in.
But from you describe, I think you are generally safe. I do not believe burn in is a guarantee. This test you see is very extreme, and these TVs are running 20 hours a day. The burn in shown so far is from those static things, the CNN bar, and that pretest they did before this test. Things that you do not do with your TV.
I work on these TVs, and I've only seen a couple of cases of burn in over the past couple years. In each case, the things burned in were related to graphic overlays. I worked on many of these TVs and seen a variety of uses. I've seen people who game heavily but had no burn in with over a year on their TV.
So while burn in can happen, it is not going to happen to everybody, nor even a majority. I would not worry as long as you are proactive like you are, and avoid static imagery. I cannot guarantee it will never happen, but I think the odds are in your favor.
If you purchased an extended warranty, it may cover burn in. You will want to check to verify that they do before buying. As a repair person, I do recommend extended warranties as long as they are not over priced. Costco has a good deal on warranties. All TVs at Costco have a 2 year factory warranty instead of the normal 1 year no matter what. If you buy the extended warranty that adds 3 years for a total of 5 years. The extended warranty is only $99 for TVs over $1000. For that price, its well worth it.
LG now covers burn in during factory warranty as well, though it requires a slightly different claim process.

Very interesting, well done rtings.still prefer my b7 oled to led but for worry free gaming I can understand why alot of people would be better off with led.it all depends on what you want from a display.

I have a 55" c7 and had been seeing this square shaped uniformity issue getting more and more prominent, no I know that it's actually a known issue . I saw your followup video , so now I will call LG and try to get it resolved , I have a feeling though it will NOT be as easy a process as you make out , while LG might have been receptive you you (and even out of Warranty) , I know by the way they treated me when my LG fridge needed repair (for known compressor unit issue) , somehow I was still $600 out of pocket....

As an LG 55EG9100 owner, with it on a minimum of 12 hours a day everyday (for the past 2 years), I haven't noticed anything (even switching to a uniform gray screen, like on the Plex splash). So, I think that in "normal" use, this might not be a huge problem. Of course, the 1080p panel in mine is going to be very different from a 4K panel... I don't think we'll see a proper burn-in test of that though.

These tests are something that "addictive people would use it like If I can say. Not many watch one thing everyday. I do something marathon seasons of movies, but the images are not the same, so it makes sense to not do anything for the panel.
And I had an S8 since launch, it's like new because of case and screen protector.
I disabled the on screen clock and anything that stays on forever, enabled the screen saver, and have no problem at all.

you really should add the 7th TV for MOVIES watchers (as I watch only movies and rarely any TV channels, so really want to know if the Tv will burn at all if i watch only movies on this TV)- -bec from this test without a TV with various movies playing- how exactly will we know if the TV with NBC-channel on (a TV with always changing content . but with NBC logo on the screen, right?) is burning only because of the NBC logo constantly displayed? or because this Tv will burn anyway without any static image? Also could you please confirm that TV with NBC changing content is already burned and how much? what exactly is burned in on this TV?

I got a Sony 930E 55 for gaming because i didn't want to risked my oled just used it as a tv it's been a year and it fine no problems with burn in i know it's possible but my tv is fine.

I wish there were some kind of anti burn-in feature... Maybe not even one built into the TVs themselves, but based around the way modern media is created. If static elements on screen could be made "less static," then the problem could be mitigated. How about some slight color cycling on HUDs and other static objects?

Found a 65" c7 open box at bestbuy for $1850. Screen had a hairline scratch to the glass. The scratch isnt visible when the tv is on only off. I feel i got a steal , for the price point only q7 and 930e was comparable but still $150 more. I plan on buying a 5 yr bestbuy warranty and using this tv with no regard for burn in..in fact i hope it does get burn in in a few years so i can get a new tv.

My B6 has burn in from playing Clicker Heros for 7 months. I only played about 15-30 minutes at a time but I guess over time the static images made their impact. Now its only certain color shades it has affected and I never notice it unless Im playing a game that causes the screen to be solid yellow or orange, usually retro style arcade games. Never notice it when watching Netflix or movies or any game with details and texture. Just when the screen is all solid 1 color and only a few certain colors. You see I didnt even realize I had it until I shut off the lights and looked at a full yellow screen, then a red one. With that being said Im still OLED all the way. The picture is amazing and the burn in is 99% not even noticeable. Every tv brand, model, and tech has flaws and Ive had high end models of each and its all about what bs you willing to deal with. I also know Im going to be getting a new tv every 3 years and dont expect any tv to perform the same as they age. Remember the 2013 Panni Plasmas ST, GT, VT models that won many awards and the ST model being an amazing picture at an amazing price? Well no one said most of us would be getting bad vertical banding issues a year or 2 later. All tvs are POSs and your simply choosing what flaw bothers you the least.

I don't think the uniform square that you are seeing in the center of the screen is related to your previous test. I have just brought a brand new LG E7 and on first boot up I see the exact same issue when the screen displays Magenta, Yellow and Orange images. I have not spoken to LG about this yet but it may not be related to your test as my TV *should* be brand new and have been displaying no images prior.
I have run the Pixel Refresh tool in the OLED settings and that appears to have cleaned up the square at the center of screen for the most part and it is a lot less visible. Aside from this issue the TV is outstanding. I just hope i don't get any burn in issues later on down the line.

I don't understand how this is a problem with tvs because I've had a Samsung Galaxy tab S with its oled screen since release in 2014 which gets used heavily everyday. It's not unusual for me to have to charge the battery twice in a day through usage and yet I've never had any IR or permanent burn in at all, the screen is as clear today as it was fresh from the box.

Watch the video again, they clearly show that ALL screens will exhibit temporary retention after just minutes of use. If you're an actual gamer you will likely have a few session a month that will push into multiple hours of gaming, you will get burn in because it isn't "if you get it", but when.

    • @IEleMenTIx
      @IEleMenTIx 6 лет назад +2

1:29 after 500 hours of use no noticable burn in on the screens except for the magenta on the bottom left screen. What amazes me is that no FIFA or COD content burned in!! The Squares seem to be a software issue with the pixel refresher. Short time image retention is there, but who cares... it will go away over time
