- Hands-on review of the Samsung Q70R HDR TV
The Samsung Q70R is a great 4k QLED TV with impressive picture quality. In this review, we compare it to the Samsung Q80R, Sony X950G and LG C9.

It can deliver deep uniform blacks in a dark room thanks to the high native contrast ratio and decent local dimming support. It can get bright enough in SDR to fight glare in a bright room, and it has a wide color gamut and great HDR peak brightness that allow it to display HDR content with vivid colors and highlights that pop. The TV has poor viewing angles, as expected for a VA panel. It has excellent motion handling, and the image looks crisp thanks to the very fast response time. The Q70R is very responsive thanks to the very low input lag, and it supports FreeSync for nearly tear-free gaming.
Model tested: 55” (QN55Q70R)
Should also be valid for the 49” (QN49Q70R), 65” (QN65Q70R), 75” (QN75Q70R) and 82” (QN82Q70R) sizes.

Update 08/05/2019: The issue with 120Hz playback has been fixed. The Samsung Q70/Q70R QLED is now able to display a 120Hz signal in 'Game' or 'PC' mode without skipping frames.
Via firmaware update?
That's right
FW #? I assume I already have it as I went to update and it stated I already was on latest
@@RTINGSdotcom The 49" Q70 is still locked at 60Hz...? or can display 120Hz as his bigger brothers...?
Can you please clarify - if I play an mkv file from USB stick plugged in the TV - will it display using 60Hz or 120Hz (5x24frames/second)?
Oh man, I just love it when Rtings has a review up for something I'm thinking about buying. You guys are amazing!
Thank you for this video and this website. This is exactly what I needed to purchase my next 4k TV
I bought my 55" Q70R a month ago and have been loving every second of it! From the brightness of well lit scenes in games and movies, to the black levels with the Q70R's FALD, and especially the colors of a QLED TV, this TV has it all! I'm very impressed with it!
Have u had any problems with light leaking out of the corners of the tv bezel when watching TV in the dark I had that on last year's q8fn thank you .
Maurice Bergeron I do and returned it,was not happy about that
@@Brian-0123 thanks for the replay I almost picked it up today yea I had it on last year q8fn 55
Hey , The review say 120 motion rate but when you Google and review it say 240 motion rate. Which one is?
@@Brian-0123 it's backlit with fald, not edge lit, you sure u got the right tv?
Thank you so much for this review, it helped me to choose this screen
Because TVs are such a consumer-y thing, I didn't think there were channels like these that went deep into the technical specs, like people do when discussing computer parts. However, you lot have single-handedly helped me in deciding on a decent-enough TV for my new place I'm moving into soon. So, wanted to say thanks for all the work you lot put into your content, and keep up the good work. :)
You guys are the best TV review channel/website that I have ever seen. Keep up the good work 👍
Thank you for great details and including model numbers for different regions
We're happy to help! If you've got suggestions then please do let us know.
Best tv review site out of them all makes it realy easy to compare, keep it up brilliant
Discovered RTINGS website looking up my Samsung F4500 Plasma. Couldn't believe the research they did on it considering it's almost 10 years old. Think I've made my mind up on a 4k tv and this is the one. Awesome channel and great work guys. I'll spread the word!
Outstanding review with all the details I needed to make a purchase decision. Ordered the 82q70 today and can't wait to watch a good movie on it. You sir, were great at giving this review. Thanks a bunch!!
Absolutely love the TV! The picture is amazing and I highly recommend.
Wow!! Very interesting contrast numbers! So many have complained of a washed out image on our channel especially in comparison to last years q8fn to the point of returning it. Perhaps its lack of peak brightness that they were struggling with! Amazing job as always guys and thank you so much for all you do!👍
As Daniel alluded to you have the choice between great native contrast but less effective local dimming (Q70) and mediocre native contrast but more effective local dimming (Q80). IMO neither scenario is idea. The wide angle filter may be a boom for the average consumer but a setback for home theater enthusiasts.
@@johnb4905 I guess what I mean John is its a shame for home theater enthusiasts that nearly all manufacturers are moving to this concept of lower contrast in the flagships of their displays. I'd be happier had they built upon the Z9d and even q9fn in terms of zone count and contrast instead of viewing angle.
But at 13:25 Q70R is the most vibrant and brightest?
I bought the Q70R 82" a few weeks ago and I love it! I'm an HT geek and the big panel serves as a dedicated HT display. The PQ is awesome. Love the pure black letter box bars in widescreen films. I have a 7.1 surround system so the TV speaker is a nonissue. Honestly, ifyou are looking at any panel larger then a 65", you really ought to be installing it with a surround sound system to do the image quality justice.
Only downside to the large screen, which provides the THX recommended 40 degree field of view at 8.5ft viewing distance, is that it brings out alot more detail in every image. This is made more so with the Q70's quantum dot panel and AI processor. This makes my old DVDs look alot worse than they did on my 65" KU6300 from the same viewing distance. Thus, I'm even more determined to replace my favorite DVDs with Bluray. It also brings out film grain and other details in HD content that I didn't notice before. This isn't so bad, as it is what the content creator intended. I just need to get used to it. Since installing the 82" Q70, I cant get enough of my HT room.
Amazing in-depth video.. really impressed
I just want to thank Daniel, and rtings.com, for an amazing job and website. Because of your reviews, I had my mind set on an 82" Q80R for months until I did one last bit of research. This video not only convinced me to go with the Q70R, as my home theater room is in a dark basement, with no angled viewing, but ended up saving me an extra $900 as I caught a costco sale ($2300 and a 5yr Samsung Warranty to boot!).
.
So, I replaced my 20 year old (yes, 20 years!) Pioneer Elite PRO-610HD(58") with this beauty. I was having regret about putting my perfectly working tv out to pasture but after having this set up for a day, holy smokes! The pic is absolutely stunning. Of course I'm having to replace my A/V receiver, so I have HDMIs, for the perfect setup, but I am so glad I followed the advice of rtings.com in this video! I truly wish all review websites were as good as these guys!! Keep up the good work!
Hi mate I'm in same boat have a Pioneer kuro LX60 for past 13 years. Can get a good deal online with for Q70 82inch just wondering how you getting on with your t.v.,what's black levels like are you happy watching movies in a dark room ?any information will help cheers mate
Hey! You can't go wrong with this tv. I have to believe it would be just fine in a lit room really. The blacks are amazing, yet in Movie mode, they are not washing out the details. And you have plenty of ways to tweak to your liking. The one thing a big tv like this will do though is exaggerate a poor video source/signal (like when news is interviewing people on skype due to the virus, harr). If you can still find this tv at steal, you better jump on it before they are gone. You may be able to find the 85" for $700US more. Good luck!
Great job thank you guys
Thanks to you I bought Samsung Q70 ! U the best RUclipsr and very Honest ! Thanks again,
How are you finding the q70? was looking at q60 but now thinking I should stretch to the q70
alex clough is great tv ! My only issue is the subtitles glomming, is horrible but the Q70 and 60 until 90 has the same issue
Thanks for the review. You are a pleasure to watch. Thanks again
I just started to research for tv purchase because of Black Friday, and this review is so comprehensive that it shocked me for not discovering it before.
RTINGS never disappoints. Nice work Daniel.
I own the 65 inch version, it's been a few weeks, very happy so far. If using a stereo receiver with the TV use the ARC jack and also change all your 1080p HDMI cables with Hi def 4k ones.
I personally own the q70r and it definitely is amazing worth every penny however it's not the best when it comes to reflections
Excellent review! Thank you
This is so professional !!!!! Freakin awesome!!! Thank you
Great review guys. You did a great job.
Very helpful video bro! Appreciate it!
Awesome review and presentation! Thanks! :)
Amazing in-depth video.
Very well made video. You are a pro!
Excellent review...very professional......keep it up
As always excellent video guys. One of my fav channels, super informative! I bought the Q7FN last weekend on a local sale, couldn't resist the price and although i was aiming for a local dimming-full array model like this new model, i don't regret it. Looks stunning. It's absolutely amazing with my PS4 PRO and PC. Thanks for all your work, you helped me A LOT to decide!
@STEVEN SEAGAL Im telling you man, the price was too good to pass. I've seen the Q9 in action and believe me, even though this one its EdgeLit and the "local dimming" is practically non functional, looks STUNNING on the PS4 PRO. Thing is, for a GREAT local dimming full-array effect you have to spend quite the number. Entry level or budget units will simply look bad, even if they have a good full array like the TCL 6 series, the budget options will ALWAYS have a downside like DSE or just bad LCD quality. Im in México, where everything has a +16% tax and i found my Q7 at $900 US. I had the option to buy an OLED LG B7 at the same price... a 3 gen old oled.. it was a difficult choice but as gamer OLED will get burnt. When OLED gets some new tech to avoid or minimize burn i'll consider it because as a gamer who will use it 90% of the time for games on the PRO and PC its a NO-GO.
@@GamerDesdeLos90s don't listen to him he's a troll
Good review and information, Thanks.
Great review as always I wish they would of put the ultra black elite coating for reflections that would of made it even that much better I still think it's a great buy for a mid range TV
Great review, thanks!
Best review to watch before spending alot of money on a nice tv.👍
Seems like the best value for money out of the QR range.
Just bought the Q70R. Well this is my first smart tv. Will keep you posted after a month of usage.
battinisai please!! What is the outer distance from leg to leg thank you
Andrew M it’s 975mm(written on the box) well it is almost the same as my soundbar length(Samsung R550).
battinisai this is 4k right ?
This tv is so much better than the x900h for the price for it's actual picture quality... Tv reviews are going to be so bullshit rom now on and will be overrated just because they have hdmi 2.1...
How is the Q70R better? I bought the Q70R and was having buyers remorse after watching the rave reviews on the 900H.
I own the 82" Q70R. It has a built in sub woofer and does produce some thump. It's a very nice TV. There is also an ambient mode that doesn't work too well for me but I don't care. Viewing angles aren't nearly as bad as you are led to believe.
great review, subscribed
Nice video. You sound more relaxed and presented this review diligently. Your reviews are the ones I value the most so well done 👍
Fantastic presentation!
was about to pull the trigger on Q60R.... Good thing that this review popped up ;) I am now a happy owner of Q70R. Worth every penny ;)
damn straight ; )

Agree fully with the comment at 8:23 regarding Dirty Screen Effect. Specially notable with sports, gaming or unicolored pictures.
Thank ,gr8 review.is it good for ps4 pro gaming also ?because sonny doesnt have the freesync feature?shoud i buy this or lg b8 for ps4 pro and movies?
Damn. This is a pro review.
I think I am going to get the LG nano 9, 86" Seems best for my setup. I really want hdmi 2.1 since I do not upgrade TVs often.
Finally the review of Q70. Thank you so much🤗 Now will wait for Q80r
Such a great video! Does this model you describe has a built in Bluetooth connection that you can pair a compatible;e headset with the unit?
now I can buy it, thank you
Awesome review
I have just purchased the 55inch model q70r for £749, this was around £1200 - £1300 a year ago! I am not bothered about hdmi 2.1 as I do not believe this will be massively relevant for next gen consoles. Hoping this is a great one
What an amazing video.
That was a good review
Hi there, firstly thank you for this website it is truly extraordinary. My question is what is the best resolution setting for windows 10 pc desktop setting, and what tv mode for desktop\ pc gaming ? Currently i have it at nVidia 4k native resolution at 60fps with GTX 1080ti graphic hdmi port, my TV is on game mode - source PC but doesnt seem to display quite right on windows desktop like my previous older Samsung tv. Thank you
As usual - you don't need to read another review to be sure.
Thanks for this review. It was really helpful for me.
On point review
Great review man! I just ordered the Q70 82inch because of your review! Keep
Up the great work.
Jorel Boston It’s an AMAZING TV! It will not disappoint! The software on this tv feels VERY “current” and up to date. The picture is great! GET THIS TV!
I bought a q70 about a 6 month ago..... it's bad ass and runs games great
This is what i call true review
Just bought this one during the Christmas sale.
How much?
Got mine a few days ago....tv brightness is TERRIBLE, watching cable is fine but gaming is not good at all. My KS9500 which messed up on me was way brighte, I have a ks8500 in my living room....it blows this TV away. Anyway Samsung can patch this
Q70 is a game machine for sure. Shame the 49" does not have 120 Hz and Freesync. Not everyone can fit a 55" in their room.
Not for PS4 but probably for PS5 (not confirmed yet). Apart from the lack of features, according to display specifications dot com the 49" ver has less brightness which will affect especially the HDR content which can be found on PS4 games too. That's why I skipped buying it on black friday sales. Not a future proof gaming tv for me.
From what I’ve gathered there are comparable TVs from other companies that are similarly priced but none of them offer all of the game centric features that this one does. It seems like the perfect tv for an Xbox owner or someone getting ready for next gen.
This is the exact issue that I have. I use my PS4 Pro on a 43" 1080p display but it is on its way out so I wanted to factor in the PS5's potential capability when looking for a replacement. I decided on the Q70R which I arrives tomorrow, but at 55" I know it's too big. Even 49" would've been pushing it. Oh well! :D
Omg you should rent/buy a 6” place
It is that means 49 inch q70r really2 bad for gaming?
how does the color gamut affects image comparing to for instance q7fn or other top qleds 2018 which had 99% color
and second what is the difference in black levels between q70 and q80 because of higher contrast of q70 vs the more zones on the q80
ps this wide viewing layers that strongly lowers contrast are theoretically a big disadvantage for me but is it very visible in real life comparing both tvs side by side?
Haha awesome, I have an lg oled 65” C9 and was contemplating if I should get a q70r for my bedroom, needless to say, oled again, it’s the uniformity and complete blacks that gets you
for twice the price ...
and screen-burn in...
Just bought today thank you! $899.99
hi can you help me? what difference betwen the Q60r and the Q64r ? thank you
Another great video! Seems like I will have a closer look ! Thanks guys
Is there much difference between a 60hz panel and a 120hz panel? I game on a console so i dont mind 60hz. Im wondering does a 120hz panel make sports smoother and movies smoother? Much appreciated, and love your work.
Absolutely love the site and the channel. Looking forward to the MPG27CQ and hopefully the VG271UP reviews.
Also would love to see some monitor reviews on the channel.
Great video as always! Hope you're feeling better, sounds like you have a cold :(
I can't find one of these anywhere in stock, look to be discontinued.
Best 49/50 inch alternative?
I love my Q70R, Great Tv
Think it has a great picture but I dont like watching Netflix nor Disney plus through the tv,, I use my now tv stick. I just think the picture is better in hd as the hdr looks kind of darker. 4k bluray looks banging aswell.
@@paulmidgley8040 you would have to calibrate the picture setting on Q70R. Backlight should be all way to 100 and the setting should be in “movie” so HDR would look great. ST.2084 should be all the way to 3.
I'm not sure you covered the 60hz refresh rate comparison between the 49" and the 120hz of the 55" you mentioned you would at the start of the video...unless I missed it!
Great stuff! My Q80 gets delivered today.
How is it?
@@EMC_CO86_0_Z It's awesome. Picture is stunning. Lots of features.
Why is my allow auto latency mode, feature greyed out on my one X?
Love you Daniel
will we get the EARC update? I love my Q70R!
I don’t see why you’d go with any other reviewer they do a hell of a job
Why is the disc darkened compared to the other sets in the local dimming demonstration? There is a big difference. How does this effect real world performance??
Is there Any dse in gaming? I notice over the whole screen vertical bandings and dse even if i dont aim to See it. AT the top left corner the dse is stronger than the other corners. And a img issue is there, too.
Bought this TV thanks to your review and comparison during Black Friday deal. Very happy with it. Comparison in this video fails with one thing the price. Q70R is much cheaper then LG and Q80R, that should be mentioned as this has to be taken into account when buying. I had to ask myself if I want to pay 400 euro more for "better" features in only certain circumstances. As well possibility of permanent burnt scared me a bit off LG TVs.
Is this the same as the Q75R in Australia?
Great job. Thanks from Baku, Azerbaijan!
I just bought the tv and my initial impression is excellent.
I got a free samsung 320w r550 sound-bar free with it.
Hello, just wondering where did you purchase your tv from?
ditto....
Just purchased this model in the 65" and the picture quality is impressive especially when watching the 4K demo tests at 60fps, also on the black levels viewing in a dark room.
I’m wondering about the off angle aspects. I’m a dark room, when looking at the black (widescreen) bars when watching movies, how prominent is the backlighting or how prominent is the color shifting? I had an lg led and its horrible at an angle. I returned it. I’m afraid of traditional LED because I’m not used to the backlighting or off angle shifting. Coming from a plasma here. How is this TV?
@@Mistygio my living room is quite narrow so I don't have a problem with viewing angles. I would maybe go OLED if you want true black screen on any angle.
I hope they fix the 120hz bug soon. It's the main reason I upgraded to the Q80R from a KS8000.
My ks8000 crapped out on me so geek squad had to replace it. I am nervous about the q70 that will be delivered in 2 days. Should I try a different TV while I still have the chance?
Should I update my TV? When I get my q70r what I do with updates is it wise to update my TV?
Is there a wall mount that you would recommend for the Samsung Q70R?
This or the sony xg9505? Mainly watching movies and using smart tv in a darker room :)
I hope AG8/AG9 review come next!
We've just started testing the A9G actually!
@@RTINGSdotcom It's just an oled ! Crushing blacks and dimmer. And wayyyyyyyyyyy too expensive ! Next !

Just picked one up. It’s awesome! Runs at 1440p @ 120hz so is somewhat future proofed for the next 2020 Xbox Scarlet
Also new Q have issues with subtitles ???? Not worth to buy then
