  • Born in the unlikeliest of places - the terrible, wasteland-like aftermath of post WWII Japan - Sony rose to capture the imaginations (and wallets) of consumers and engineers around the world. The company produced hit after hit after hit: portable transistor radios, CDs, the Walkman, the PlayStation, DVDs, life insurance(!!)... and yet ultimately fell behind its greatest American admirer, Steve Jobs and Apple. This is the incredible story of Sony’s human and technological optimism in the face of overwhelming odds - a story that, given recent world events, remains as relevant today as ever.

You guys need to hire a social media person to work the algorithms for your podcast. You should have millions of views. This is truly gold, just found you guys and I have listened to like 3 episodes.

Holy hell out if all the auto plays with hundreds and millions of views this has been the most entertaining thing all week, incredibly interesting, I was TOO surprised to find out how little views this has!

Great episode! 🤗 Interestingly, without Sony Walkman, iPod and later iPhone as an upgraded iPod probably wouldn't exist the way we know it today.

I just came to youtube to say thank you, guys! normally I listen to the episodes in one shot, all of them. The dynamics between you two are epic, just to let you know that as an entrepreneur I'm interested in EVERY little nuance of all stories. It's interesting how the entrepreneur tune their brain to all factors that makes a successful story. Keep it up!

Sony didn’t do a Sony Plus in the U.S. but they have streaming services elsewhere. Sony Liv is a streaming service in India competing with Netflix and Prime.

There were two! One is "Made in Japan", and the other is John Nathan's book, "Sony".

Hey! Nice episode. I'm still trying to figure out how you're making me stick to such a long podcast, while spinning names after names of people and companies, and yet it's all interesting. Kudos!

As far as consumers are concerned, Sony was smart with the launch of Playstation 1 and it sold like hotcakes because it was much more powerful than both super nes and sega genesis, this allowed, for the first time ever really to have arcade games at home, including 3d games like virtua racing and 3d fighting games. This was mindblowing at the time and something that Nintendo could not do at the time.

I know it’s been awhile since you guys put out this video … very interesting story about Sony … which I didn’t know. But anyways… once you mentioned how bad Wonder Woman 1984 was bad .. I was curious if you seen or heard about the Madam Web … by Sony 😂

Sony does know how to make a computer and phones they just make it too enthusiastic products, they are like Porsche of phones very special and very capable but not for the general audience they need a normal phone that is also a very good Sony phone that will allow them to continue making this super special phone

I'm an hour in, I see a few mistakes and misreadings.
First, Trinitron was not invented by Sony Sony 'Bought' Trinitron after years of research into colour television produced 'Cromatron' and very nearly bankrupted the company !
Next, the reason Sony didn't try to sell the Betamax format on the promise of renting 'Pre-recorded video tapes' because no such Product' existed !
Later when video rental was a 'Thing' i clearly remember seeing a brand new pre-recorded copy of star wars on sale at a manufacturers recommended price of £100 (in around 1981) so not so many people would want to watch a movie at home instead of a 'well equiped' cinema !
Also Betamax wasn't their first attempt at VCRs, i have a Sony portable reel to reel vcr (from 1968).
Minidisk was only a flop in the USA though I didn't bother using mine too much as I preferred buying CDs instead.
Sony never made a VHS cam-corder (and neither did they make VHS home decks, they were made by Hitachi), they went straight from BetaMovie machines to chunky 8mm video ones.
Anyway I am not trying to 'Slag' you off, just point out some errors and now I shall watch your next two hours 😮❤

1:30:38 same thing going on right now with China coming over and buying US companies and US land. But unlike Japanese companies, I think these Chinese companies doing this could really be a bad thing for us.
