OLED Burn-In Test: No Screen Burn After 6 Months of Use, 20 Hours A Day
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 24 авг 2019
- We investigated the risk of OLED burn-in by displaying varying content 20 hours a day on a brand new LG E8 OLED TV for more than 6 months.
We found no sign of permanent screenburn after putting on more than 3700 hours on our LG E8, confirming that OLED burn-in is extremely unlikely as long as you vary your content, and put the TV into standby rather than power off at the mains so that the normal compensation cycles can run to clear up image retention and reduce the risk of permanent screenburn.

The artefacts seen on screen from 7:57 to 8:38 are *NOT* burn-in, but reflections from TV boxes in front of the television. You can see identical reflections at 3:42 when the screen is off. :-)

Don't worry, you've found the bottom of the rabbit hole now 😂
Haha! I’m there too 😂
dont worry, ive been trying to buy a tv for probably a year now and I just couldn't commit to one, im usually a samsung person, but since they dont make OLED i have been struggling, my top 2 choices where between the Sony A9G and LG GX, finally committed to the LG for the 4 2.1 hdmi ports, g sync and free sync features, and for built in voice google assistance since my whole house it setup with google. And just overall features seem better and when I saw the two TV's in person for some reason the Sony didnt look great, I mean bestbuy could have just messed with the settings but that at least made my choice for a TV easier lol.

Thanks Daniel! The work was long and hard... :-)
This convinced me to buy OLED TV. Informative quality content. Keep it up.
Not really, I respect the effort. However the main contributor to screen "burn-in" is station/network Logos. In fact I won't purchase another TV until technology allows you to turn-off Logos, and sport tickers on the screen. Had he experimented with a network that displays a logo in the corner of the screen, I'd bet top dollar the results would show differently. Little over 3 years with my LG OLED, that was calibrated with Spears & Munsil, for dark room viewing. Also within the menu, "screen shift" on. Along with running "clear panel noise" frequently. I have 3 network logo's in my lower left screen, with one that is very visible & noticeable when one color is displayed in that corner. Along with 2 Logo burn-ins in the lower right. Them 2 aren't as noticeable when watching the TV unless there is a solid bright color displayed in that corner.
I'll definitely never purchase another OLED TV again, especially for multiple thousands of dollars. But hey, you live & learn.

This has been the only channel I’ve come across that has mentioned the standby mode to help mitigate burn in. That is an extremely valuable consideration for someone who has, or is interested in buying, an OLED TV. Many thanks for this in-depth performance review!
@Sherbet Lemon simply by “turning off” the tv via the power button on the remote. So basically, just make sure you use the remote to turn off the display, rather than, for example, switching off a power strip it may be plugged into.
Thank you for sharing this interesting test Vincent. I would lightly suggest you investigate the effect of static elements in video games, such as HUDs, as an increasing amount of people game on their TVs. I appreciate your time and effort, especially in improving upon the RTINGS testing methodology by playing more varied content (reflecting a more typical use case). This video will greatly assist in clarifying any misconceptions/misunderstandings about burn-in and image retention on OLED display technologies.
There are two factors that stop me from buy an OLED. 1. The sheer amount of people with destroyed TV sets due to burn-in, and 2. The fact that the producers don't have a burn-in warranty, which basically tells me they know it's a real issue, but can't do anything about it.
Utter lies. What stops you is the fact that you're cheap.
Awesome video Vincent. Love the joke at the start.
Your level and willingness to share of knowledge is greatly appreciated.
"They're only running the same content on the same TV 20 hours a day for more than 6 months... That's just not how normal people are gonna be using their televisions."
Apparently you've never seen me play Destiny 2.
That happens to every tv bro, the pixels get exhausted over time... Even if different content is played
Kiran Kumar thats just not true. Plasma an Oled specifically are very much likely to get a burn in and that in a much shorter time than a normal LED Panel. Of course everything wears off someday and gets destroyed, but with OLED you will have issues that you wouldn‘t have had with a normal LED or LCD panel für maybe 8-10 years. You gotta babysit your TV if you buy an OLED and you will always have in mind to mix up the content or to switch the TV of or play the refresh programm or else it will wear off. Thats not the case with normal TVs. On the other hand the OLED do look much better so you have to decide if it is worth it or not. In the livingroom I have got an OLED TV because we mainly watch netflix or a football game once a week over there. In my own room where I game and everything I have a QLED TV for gaming (sometimes you wanna game on a big TV and not on your normal desktop) and sometimes also movie contents and netflix just like in the living room.
@@giornogiovanna6215 i have lg plazma from 8 year and its used only to wach one channel allover the day and its like new one no single burn out
@@giornogiovanna6215 I had Samsung plasma tv for 12 years (only for games) - i had some slight burn-in of static menus, but they disappeared after short time, when I changed the game. Unfortunately (or fortunately, because it was 720p display) it had not turned on one day.
Currently I have Philips OLED 4k - I also use it only for games - I haven't observed ANY burn-in problem - only from time to time I get the message to start the "refresh" process (or it is performed automatically, when I don't use the tv, but it is still powered).
And about "plain" LCD - I was observed many devices which display mainly static images, which were affected by the problem of burn-in: in this case we had to implement a screen saver - so LCD also are affected by the burn-in artefacts - usually in a longer term, but without any additional protection the problem arises in time.
Some people are just never satisfied lol sucks to be them I guess,
I'm using LG C6 for two years as a TV (5% of a time) and as a PC monitor (95% of a time). Black screen screen saver on a PC is set to 3 minutes of inactivity. Average usage time is about 6 hours per day. No signs of burn-in so far. Great 3D OLED TV by the way!
A black screen saver have really saved my worries about burn-in on my 55" B7V.
Same as you but I use a gallery of 65 wallpapers alternating every mlinute and no burn-in so far (I use a C8 since a year).
It looks like my experience of no-burn-in is an effect of relatively low brightness set for a dimmed room. I'm using this settings: OLED light 100, Brightness 50, Contrast 45. This settings gives me full standard dynamic range (0-255, nothing is clipped) at desired brightness. I've tried to achieve the same brightness by setting Contrast to 100 (default value) and tuning down OLED light value. This causes more aggressive auto-brightness adjustment which is not good for a PC monitor usage.
I've tried to use internal TV's RUclips client with my picture settings (OLED light 100) and when it starts it does not respect a contrast setting. So it displays RUclips logo (splash screen) at a maximum possible brightness for a few seconds. And it already causes a temporary image retention on a gray screen! So I guess gaming at high brightness may really cause a permanent burn-in but my TV is safe because of relatively low brightness settings.
I am planning to buy C9 as a monitor , I am worry when using browsers with all task bars and top menu or URL which will be static images for long time .
I have a LG C6 for right about 3 years now and I have a few severe burnin spots. 8 hours on average every day use. Mixed content of PC, internal youtube & internal netflix app. I don’t watch tv channels.
I have very noticable burnin of the yellow search icon of internal youtube app (green and red pixel burn in) in the bottom right. Also but slightly less the red youtube logo in the top left and the red progress bar in the middle of the screen.
Also the red netflix logo bottom right.
There are some spots on the edge due to the taskbar of windows but are not noticable in normal content, all of the rest as mentioned is!
I find it such a shame that the internal apps have static content that cause burn in, it’s easy preventable. Shift the interal app static content just a few pixel after so many UTT (poweron) hours.
I also have vertical banding (especially visible during panning content) on the right half of the screen. This came about after the tv explicitly asked me if it should run a compensation cycle.
I find it actually unacceptable that the LG apps and the LG compensation cycle software are the main and only cause of screen quality degradation.
I’ve read several complaints of vertical banding gradually worsening over time.
I want to buy a C9 for the variable refresh rate capabilty but I’m very hesitant because of LG’s crappy internal apps and compensation algorithm.

I've got burn-in from the yellow & red logos on the ITV show Lorraine - my wife watches it for maybe an hour each morning. This is on a calibrated LG E6V that I've had for a couple of years. Hopefully OLED tech is better now, but burn in is not a myth, even for regular users like me whose set is used for 5 or 6 hours a day (approx) of normal viewing.
The 6 models were the worst for Burn in, how many years till you got your first burn in?

Thanks Vincent for the explanation of how OLED TVs mitigate burn in. As an X plasma owner and now a proud owner of a Panasonic TC-65GZ1000 TV, I was always aware of burn in potential on both types. I never experienced burn in on my Plasmas (both Panasonic which I owned for 6 and 10 years). In my decision to go with and OLED v/s a high end Samsung Qled for my home theater display, burn in was a consideration but not a serious worry in my decision making process. I spent a lot of time watching the reviews on your channel. These reviews were very useful in helping me make my decision.
First time watching a video of you guys and I didn't expect that voice! Thanks for the great test!
this is the quickest I have ever subscribed to a channel. I dont even have any interest in this TV, just the way you spoke and carried out your experiment showed me that you are a serious candidate! Keep it up!
My problem with this test is that it did not include gaming or sports, which are both notorious for causing burn-in. A "normal" household regularly uses their TV for at least one of those two types of content. This test was a best case scenario where no one in the household was a gamer or sports fan. At this point everyone should know that watching an average TV broadcast isn't going to cause noticeable burn-in on a modern OLED. Sports and gaming are the content types known to cause trouble due to the static banners and HUDs.
Normal channels also have banners and many different signs or text. ITV4 is a logo that was there all the time. What do you need more to prove that it is okay?
it's not okay..... high priced sony oled's get burn in a few weeks with sports or game content@@DragonR333

Vincent, thanks for the tests -- BUT ... there are no aggressive TV or movie logos on the screen anywhere, and there are no subtitles/closed captioning. Maybe in the UK you guys have those subtle TV station identifiers, but in the States we have aggressive logo branding and usually advertisements for other shows popping up at the bottom of the screen or on the sides. I wish you could do a more aggressive and varied burn-in test using channels with large network identifying logos, black bar closed captioning with white enclosed text (not Netflix).

Nice review brother! Like all your content, it's top-notch
Thank you for showing a "REAL WORLD" test and for explaining the proper way to powerdon so that the tv will run the compensation cycles.
Depends on the definition of "normal" usage. Burn-in happens when there is static images with high red content. If you're a gamer or watch news or sports for days with static UIs in the same location for days, then those images will burn. That's why you might not see it if you just watch movies or play CoD all day, but will if you play super saturated games like Stardew Valley or watch CNN/Fox News all day.
I would love to have an updated video on this Vincet. Thans for the hard work.
Vincent, Thank you, for this informative video.
On a side note.
The Chase looked much better pixelated..
I have burn in on my 65B6 bought 2,5 years ago. I use it with a lot of different content including variety of flow TV channels, streaming from different sources and switch of just like you said. My use includes also regular 0,5-1 hours per day of news channels with news ticker and breaking bars which is also what has now been burned permanently into my screen including also a nice RUclips logo. My burn in appeared only after bit more than 2 years of use. I don't know the channels you use for testing, but if you want to see if burn in can be provoked then you should include content with clear static areas. Otherwise I'm afraid that you are only providing an alibi for the TV industry.
Hans Henrik Same here. I will never buy a OLED again
@@gmarinosdcrp That is also my conclusion. My content use does not match OLED's vulnerability to burn in. Shame Samsung is also turning to OLED.

Great test! But Vincent used the picture preset for a dark room. It’s reasonable. But I don’t think the majority of consumers use that preset. So it would be nice to see if there is burn-in on brighter picture presets. P. S. Although you should remember that any TV provides way better picture in a dark room (especially in terms of contrast ratio). And if you watch a TV in a bright room you usually see a lot of reflections on the screen (especially if the content is dark).
Hugely important note. It's actually shameful that your comment didn't get more attention and wasn't pinned.
He’s or here to teach people common sense bud. You should know that already. Sad most modern people need to be told stuff or told what to do that should be a basic instinct. Smh

great content, thanks for taking the time to do this for us! I would love to see you do a video on if there are any streaming quality differences between using the tv's onboards apps, an Apple TV, or the apps on the Blu-ray player when playing 4K HDR/Dolby content from something like Netflix. This OLED would be a great testing canvas for that as well.
I would love for you to do this for the gaming side of this TV. It’s very amazing when it comes to film but constant static images is another thing
I'm curious how HDR-content affect the screen burn in. You should consider another video with that topic. Thanks for providing great content by the way! 👍😁
there is risk of burn in if u consistely run the tv with very high brightness or backlight regardless whether its LCD, OLED or MINI LEd. Especially if u touch the screen and notice its hot after a short period of time.. reduce the backlight to 50 or 70 and /or turn on those eco sensors or auto brightness features> I had a sony bravia EDGE lit lcd tv for 8 years and on the 5th or 6 year the burn in was like a lines running across the edges of the tv since its edge lit . thats because i had the backlight on full strenght and the heat caused it . Eventually the TV screen gave away after 8 years. so this makes me think its the backlight that causes burn in in led tvs
This burn in issue is more pronoucned on OLED than other types because of the way oled operates generating a lot of heat due to their high luminosity and they don't have the extra layers of material behind the screen which lcd tvs have . This is why those lcd tvs which released. in the 2000s lasted longer because they had a dim display . My old HP laptop from 2008 it's lcd is still working because its dim display of that time period
@@keetvhdlimited962 Thanks for sharing! It’s clear that you need to be careful 😊
@@SweDownhill on oleds the risk of of burn in pattern is all over the screen.. As you may have guessed, Edge Lit TVs use lights along the perimeter of your TV, while Full Array televisions have multiple zones throughout the display and, and Direct Lit TVs, like Full Array TVs, have LEDs placed throughout the back of the television..this is why on edge lit tvs the risk of burn in is mostly on the edge and they show up as white transparent lines along the 4 perimeters of the screen

I have a B6 brand new, and the burn in on it is terrible... Never again
Great video! Thanks for the info! Now, have you done any burn-in test for 4:3 content? This would be useful for people with OSSC and Framemister setups and for people who watch a lot of older movies.
Awesome dark humor.! Always great review / advice.
My LG B6 is the best TV I have ever had. Still going strong, no burn in, no issues.
Mister JK Good for you

Mr. C. I have the same TV as well. Any image retention I had has been cleared out by using clear panel noise in the settings. No issues. Did you try using that app? I have it set up to run once a week by itself. Zero burn in on my TV. Clear as the day I bought it. If you don't use the built in settings to clear any panel noise or image retention your TV will end up like yours.
C. chelious Nope. As image retention and burn-in are not the same. And btw should clear panel noise run by itself after every 4 hours of TV running time. But first after the TV have been turned off it will start the procedure. And yes, I tried that manually many times without the slightliest difference.
The fact is, that OLED technology apparently is made like this, so the LEDs wears out after xxx time of usage. The light will decrease of every single LED more and more when it begins to wear out. The lifespan is affected by how much the individually LED have lit. So if you have static images like UI buttons in apps, channel logos etc. in rich colors like red, blue and green, they will be used a lot more and therefore start to decrease the light it outputs of these affected pixels, and then you will at last be able to see it, on evenly colored backgrounds.
Mr. C. Wow. I didn't know that. So are you saying it's just a matter of time before my TV gets it? Doesn't image retention cause burn in if it's not cleared?
www.cnet.com/how-to/oled-screen-burn-in-what-you-need-to-know-now/
Wait, I cant just power off the TV? Pass!
Meh, my worries are with games, movies with black bars, and PC use with static menus. Not broadcast.
You don't need to worry about black bars burning in. Those pixels are turned off so burning in is impossible
This is what most people who speak of "Burn-in" are talking about when they say they are worried. We use our TV as a PC monitor and/or we play games a lot.
I play a lot of games on my C8, including using it as a PC monitor for my Gaming/HTPC.
I’ve had it over a year now.
@@JoshEckerman Do you use it to browse the web?
Been using my lg for 2 years now for pc gaming and zero issues.
Thanks allway watch you're videos greetings from Spain
Very good information, thank you!
Unfortunately my OLED55C7V (a little over 2 years old) burned in. I began to notice it some months ago.
An orange logo of a program is extra visible on an Orange, Red, Yellow and Pink screen. The refreshing is on and there’s no hard power down. But there’s more…..We use subtitles here in the Netherlands. The place where they show up is now darker. Upper left corner, where more logos are shown, is darker and we’ve got some hard vertical stripes as well.
So yes, an OLED can burn in.
Note: we watch various programs, some Netflix and so on. The logo that burned in, is on for 15 to 20 min. a day, 5 days a week. The TV is on for around 5 hours a day.
This week there was a new screen installed. According to the repair man, the vertical stripes could be the sun!! He saw the burned in logo regularly, we weren’t the first. When we turned it on the new screen difference was huge. It didn’t only burn in, the old screen was deteriorating and we didn’t see it.
Let’s hope this screen is indeed the improved version.
I'll wait for the microled tech to expand, only then I'll change my 49" QLED. Since I'm a gamer and I use my tv mostly as a monitor, OLED isn't an option, no matter what cheesy options they add on them in time. Sooner or later they burn.
@@hansfontijn8871 these types of horror story scare the hell out of me as I was hoping to finally buy an OLED this week after they've been on the market for a few years.
@@Daniel-it1dp you got a pro here testing this for 20 hrs a day which is extreme testing over six full months vs one random persons comment. There are similar tests on google, again with the same results of no burn in. If you purely game on it 10 hrs a day 7 days a week or watch a news Chanel 24/7 then maybe consider an LCD but for ‘normal use’ it’s highly unlikely you’ll ever experience burn in. My viewing is varied, normal sky tv, maybe some Netflix movies at the weekend, some you tube, gaming at the weekend, I don’t even think about burn it.
OLED TV manufacturers have also proactively jumped in to minimize the chance of burn-in. User settings like LG’s “Screen Shift” and Sony’s “Pixel Shift” move the image slightly around the screen. There are also built-in screen savers that automatically pop up after extended periods of inactivity.
OLED TVs can also perform “refreshers” on a certain timed basis to remove image retention. On Sony TVs, this particular feature is called “Panel Refresh,” and on LGs, it is known as “Pixel Refresher.” If you ever notice image retention, this function can be run manually as well. For LG TVs, you can receive a notification to run this feature after 2,000 hours of viewing time.
I love the amazing blacks, colours and contrast of OLED, I could never go back to LCD. LCDs also have problems, light distortion around the edges of the screen has happened on every LCD I have ever owned after a couple of years.
You will always read horror stories, but remember, some are exactly that, a ‘story’ plenty of OLED haters in the world, usually those who can’t afford them!
@@Daniel-it1dp personally I would not trade this OLED for a QLED. We traded in a QLED and the difference is huge. A year has passed since the new screen was installed. It looks like the screen is way better quality than the old one. No burn in what so ever.
For the people saying "burn-in is a myth", I have a 55'' B7 that a bought a couple of years ago and it does have burn-in. I watch a lot of movies with subtitles and I can clearly see the burn-in on some scenes (it clearly shows on red backgrounds or similar). Trust me, my family and me take good care of the TV, because we knew the risks when we decided to buy it. And the TV is on for 7-8 hours a day max! The brightness and OLED light is not on the max settings and we don't play games on it at all and barely watch the news. The subtitles burn-in is very distracting. I can't *not* notice it. I wonder if the warranty covers burn-in.
yo, remove the not, because you made "can't," this is a contraction of can not which makes your sentence
Can not not
TreeMobile. That’s exactly my intention. I wanted to emphasize that it’s impossible not to notice it, which makes “can’t not notice it” correct in this context.
Well, you could have just made it so you emphasize the can't
I will eat babies vs I *will* eat babies.
TreeMobile. Really, dude? It’s Sunday. I like trees, but you’re a special kind.

I have a LG 55ec9300 in my living room since July 2015. Watch all kinds of movies, TV shows, news, and video games. Have 15,000 hours on it and no burn-in or any other issues🤷🏻♂️
I own a B9 and the quality sound is amazing!!!
i got burn-ins within the first year. took me some time to notice it though, but it was cleary the netflix subtitles burnt in. got my panel replaced (had still warranty) and took super extra care to not let this happen again. i took every measure, reduced the backlighting, change the subtitles to a darker colour, had pixel shift activated and did the panel refresh EVERY night. still, after one year i had the same burn-ins again (plus some other panel issues).
You shouldn't be doing the manual pixel refresh every night.
Yeah just learned from watching some other OLED video that if you use subtitles OLED TV not for you since will most definitely get burn-in :( Oh well my QLED TV works and looks great enough till new tech comes out to replace OLED.
Goodbye Subbed Anime and movies.. hehehe
When you buy expensive tv with many restriction.🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
I had some minor yellow burn in on day 1 with my B7. Or rather, some spots that are now noticeably dimmer when looking at full field yellow. I paused a video game for about 5 or 10 minutes. It had yellow dots on the screen. It has evened out over time, it was more noticeable at first. I wonder if it was so obvious at first because the organic compounds in the LEDs fade in a bathtub curve. As I understand it, they lose most brightness early in life and then stabilize for a long time before eventually losing much more brightness after a decade or more. So those yellow areas wore out those particular red and/or green subpixels a bit quicker than the others, but they've since evened out?
Vincent, I love your videos and your dry&witty humor. Where can I find a maintenace remote to enter that info screen? Are there other ways to see the service screen info?
Fantastically informative! Love it 👌
another great video!! thanks for doing that Vincent!
I just can't wait for a TCL MiniLED vs OLED video!!!!!!!!
Imagine buying a tv you will analyze each time you turn it on if it haven't got burn in yet, day after day, each time watching a chanel with a static logo getting nervous about staying on the same channel for too long, day after day, then after 2-4 years you get burn-in. My galaxy S9 got burn in, "best smartphone display on this planet", And despite the images are the best of the best I don't feel it's a good idea to buy an OLED if you are not willing to eventually buy a new one each 2 years.
Did you even watched? Using oled phones or tvs, if you don't wnat burn ins, just set the brightness to 60% or 50%. Only 100%if needed
@@samuelmanny6231 yeah but no, most people who appricate OLED also appreciate HDR. Not going to set it to anything below 90 percent. Get outta here lol
Thats what we needed. Thanks !
Great and easy to understand explanation. Subbed.
