I'm glad they offer 512GB and 1TB options, it softens the blow a little. But I'm still mad about that. Headphone jacks always had poor quality, so I don't miss them. I use wireless, or headphone amps now. 10x better sound
Oh please, we're still crying about this? No, they didn't remove the jack because of space constraints. Yes, it was to push wireless headphones. Just shut up, jesus
@@PPedroFernandes The jack sounded terrible anyway. I stopped using headphone jacks right before Apple dropped them. Fiio BTR3k is the best portable option, among others
We really need a resurgence of no frills but features people actually care about phones+latest SOC at reasonable prices. You know, the role that the OnePlus One filled originally. It wasn't a perfect phone(no sd, replacable battery), but it did a lot of the things I cared about and cut costs where it made sense. OnePlus has really fallen far since then.
You're just not going to get that bargain phone. I bit the bullet and got Sony Xperia to get those features at full price. It takes demand to get that OnePlus budget flagship kind of device. Too many are more willing to be debtors for SamApple or nab the cheaper Google. The companies have proven people will compromise and pay more for less
Im not over the SD card loss either. Im not gonna stop using my old S9 until the day i either break the screen, or it just dies on its own. Such a good phone and i think it still has at least a year of life left in it.
My S9 Note got "inflated battery syndrome" and split the glass case. I recently replaced it with an S20, and it's still got SD support, but it's in the SIM tray so it's not easily accessible. Not that I'm shuttling gigabytes of data on and off the phone very often, so I really don't care. But it's a solid device and a few hundred cheaper than the flagship models. I specifically got the Note because of the stylus, because my skin is so dry my fingers often don't work correctly with touch-screens - so I have no interest in a phone that doesn't have one.
SD cards are history in phones, such unrealiable technology. I had the same opinion as you years ago, but multiple of my MicroSD cards have malfunctioned, resulting in data loss. And I'm not talking about off-brand cards.
That was the biggest deal deal breaker for me not upgrading to this phone. Not having an SD card slot. Hopefully they add it again in the future since that was one of the biggest ways they differentiate themselves from Apple and their iPhone. Also I think the "not having enough room" thing for me is BS. I'm Samsung could of found a way if they really wanted to.
I totally agree and understand, but personally, I don't see a reason the average consumer will need more than 128 or 256 with an increasing user base using cloud storage for the important pictures and videos. Of course, there's drawbacks, but I think we're at the point where built in storage is enough for most, at least for now.
@@thats80s I have S9+ as well and just pre-ordered S22 Ultra. But not because I need it but because I want it. The S9+ is very powerful for what I do and the only shortfall is HD videos. The S9+ high res HD recordings are not the best in my opinion.
Day one S20+ user here, I still love the phone and I will probably refurbish it myself with a new frame, new backglass and new battery since its in rough shape. Oddly enough, the only complaint that I have with the phone is the new OneUI 4 update, I get bugs and crashes that I never had before, I think its on google's side since my friend who owns a Pixel 6 Pro has the same issues.
Same, S10 and recently got Android 12 and OneUI 4.0. I don't see the OneUI update as being much of an "upgrade", but this will definitely be the last major update we'll get. Which royally sucks, because specs-wise, the S10 is perfect, still has a headphone jack, still has an SD card slot and 4100mAh battery, so I can still use wired 3.5mm headphones w/out a dongle, have a fairly fast 512GB SDXC card for $50 and my battery lasts all day since I don't have to charge wireless earbud case off of my phone's battery. The thing is, if Samsung put the specs of the S22 Ultra into a phone with an SD card and headphone jack, I'd spend the $1200 for the 128GB version, but WTF Samsung?
11:55 I believe that new stretch effect while scrolling is a Android 12 feature even in AOSP. It's a global scrolling effect so it applies to most scrollable menus.
That ending hit a little too close to home! I've loved OnePlus for a while! A number of my friends had the OnePlus 1, I had the OnePlus 3, 5, 6, and 7pro (still currently using the 7 pro), but I'm definitely done with them after this phone.
Same here.... OnePlus 6 last update ruined a fully functioning phone....still use it for gaming.....but S22 Ultra is a really good everyday phone for official purposes and photography ofcourse.
yeaaaa! its interesting context nad im super glad its all been talked abotu cause it gives me this last bit of information i needed~ deciding between paying more for s22 ultra or getting oneplus 10 pro high storage for the best value for my uses~ coming from a LG G6 everything with a snap 8 g1 is gonna be like 3-4x better in every way, but weird things like OP10P being 60hz screen rate limited in gaming was weird~ hard to pull the trigger on value when your greedy for perfection hah. thanks for the comment as well wanted ot say it def helps cause i have no background to what the previous phones were so everything i see if just stars and honeymoon~ important to see if people loyal to the brand dont like it anymore etc
It's really weird but ever since the S6-S7, Samsung has become so much better in software than everything else, I really have come to terms I think I prefer it over stock Android. I mean, the launcher and whatnot are still changeable, but Samsung is one of the few companies still doing cool things with the status bar, settings, or something as GODSEND ERGONOMICALLY GOOD such as keeping right-hand back button nav option... Not to mention they still do one-handed mode well if you like that.
What's really really nice about Samsung is the integration with windows. When I'm working, I practically never touch my phone because I can make and take calls from laptop. I haven't tried it with other android, but the link to windows is already installed on the S10+. It can also copy paste from the laptop to phone and vice versa. Hence I can copy something from the laptop, and when I open my phone and tap paste, boom, you have the text which you copied from the laptop. The integration makes me more efficient since I don't have to reach for my phone every time.
@Carl Gunderson I thought it was implied it was exclusive to the hardware inside the S22, the new Snapdragon 12345 or whichwhat, but on my older note20 I saw the same improvement. Maybe not as significant. I dunno I'm not the sort who buys phones on loop!
8:00 I think what samsung meant by that is the older phones' display tended to look washed out when it hit max brightness under bright sunlight and they fixed that by using the AI stuff....not completely sure since I only got to touch it for like 30 mins in a store, and just noticed it by putting my phone's LED flash on top of the part of the display to emulate being under bright sunlight for fun
@Ryujin Jk it's just marketing words to make people think it's some sort of ground breaking technology...... every launch is the same kinda sh*t every year, just about 5% better than last year lol
@@biggiesmalls7939 No one said its ground breaking , and incremental improvement is what is shown in each launch , if you expect some ground shattering technological improvement each year , Then clearly you have never been a part of these kind of research fields.
I have the 22ultra and I absolutely love it, the screen is awesome, the camera works great, gaming on this thing is fantastic. The stylus is super useful for games and with a good charger the battery lasts quite well for what I'm putting it through.
The aforementioned "Jelly Effect" when scrolling is the new android 12 scrolling, this is on all android 12 devices from the Pixels to the Oppos to the Samsungs of the world. Love the vid! Keep it up!! Edit: spelling
Already so overpriced plus if you use a micro SD card you're missing 512+ that you can't get back and it was way cheaper. Still missing headphone jack. Overall boring
After watching a bunch of videos on the ultra (yes, I've pre-ordered), I'm starting to think that Samsung just used a design they already had for a possible S21 Note, but jumped the last version for the reasons we already know (didn't make sense at the time). And NOW, they know that people won't stand for the detached Spen, so they brought it back under the same design they had stashed in a dust drawer somewhere and slaped the Ultra name. Hehehe
Agreed. I have a case that holds the sPen on mine and it makes it quite bulky. Also the size of the Fold pen is pretty big, wouldn't fit in the phone, I don't actually know if I'd want it to be smaller, pros and cons to it being smaller Also I don't care for the external display the narrowness feels awkward to me
If they make cover screen with 19:9 or 20:9 aspect ratio, main screen closer to 4:3 ratio, improve the hinge mechanism to be closer to find n, implement s22 cameras, 45 w charging and s pen silo- I. AM .SOLD .
I have a s9+ and I definitely notice the sunlight color shift you're talking about. I think it turn your display to a colder white balance when it detects sun light and back to normal in the shade and makes the colors look better in direct sun light. Not Entirely sure why the display tends to look warm in the first place, it could be just how sunlight interact with materials of the glass/display.
It looks warm in the first place, because Samsung does the over saturated thing. On a Samsung TV, Linus's hot pink Toque is eye blinding due to the unnatural saturation and warm profile Samsung goes for.
yeah I have s20 fe and everyone complained about its legibility in direct sunlight but in auto brightness it ramps up the brightness so much that color temp changes probably display tech limitations as they are all amoled and oleds have high brightness probs as no white leds like in lcds
This is going to be the first Samsung phone where I am going to be interested in seeing the difference between qualcomm and exynos processors. Supposed the Xclipse GPU is based on AMD's RDNA architecture so 3rd party testing will be interesting to see where its performance as a GPU sits
Samsung have said there's a software update coming to further improve the new Exynos hardware too. I'm assuming a GPU driver update, which could bring it to complete parity or even give it a leg up over the Adreno. As it is already neck and neck.
Originally, I wasn't going to replace my Note 9 for anything because it runs pretty perfect still. But recently my aux and charging ports have become worn and very loose. So, I'm excited that this new Ultra feels like a worthy enough successor. Already placed my pre-order for the black 500gb model. Excited to see it in hopefully 10 days.
Ayyy same here. Unfortunately my screen broke and I can only use the pen to do anything. Was a really interesting learning curve to type with the pen. I'm even almost as fast as with fingers! Anyways the note 9 is still the best phone ever made. Especially for the storage upgrade and aux input and the Irisscanner
@@saruto201 yeah i really didn't wanna have to replace it. Overall, mine still works plenty good but I guess it's decent time for an upgrade. Really wish expandable storage still existed
@@edwindano Is there something particularly wrong with the 8? I know you could probably get charged with an act of terrorism if you threw a Note 7 in the street but is there something I missed with the 8?
@Madness Reborn just an old phone ull definitely feel the difference with the new ones. 120hz, faster charge, multitasking, hours of gaming wothout overheating, resolution etc... that one came out in 2017 5 years old
Note 9 was the last good note with no compromises. I like having the option of using bluetooth buds for casual use and wired audiophile cans with portable dac/amp just to chill with and actually enjoy high fidelity....bluetooth compressed audio just plain sucks.
@@talltale9760 same. Had to go to bluetooth only when my S9+'s headphone jack went wonky on me. Haven't even missed it. Fuck wires, bluetooth has come a long way over the years.
Glad to see that the Note is back in spirit, but no expandability and no headphone jack takes away from what could be the perfect successor to my Note 9.
I sucked up the lack of headphone jack with the Note20 Ultra, but I don't think I'll be so easily convinced to go without SD cards..... Also, interesting to see how we went from Note is a phone that releases yearly to Note is a phone line up that to get the real experience you have to get the highest tier, priciest one to "well skip this concept entirely, everyone please buy our unnecessarily large and mechanically wearing devices pleas" to "oh shit, ya'll not buying it, okay let's u-turn on that" to "here's the Note, except no, we're too proud to continue calling it that. Also you now HAVE to buy at the top tier price to get any sort of Note experience. Have fun"... The smell of upsell and smoke screening is pretty thick.... :/
@@summondominion Just because you don't use it, doesn't mean nobody uses it. Many people have uses for it, like connecting a wired mic, playing music in older cars, connecting the phone to dj stations, or any media output that doesn't have bluetooth. If they'd at least include a dongle, ok. But we don't even get that on an ultra premium smartphone. They only cut costs while steadily increasing prices. And attacking those who criticise these practices will only make this more rampant I'm afraid.
I'm SO with you on the SD card slots, and not even for the sake of less expensive storage expansion. Except for my phone, every device I own takes SD cards. For me they're the easiest way to move around photos and other data, and keep them safe. Even though I'm not "in the Apple ecosystem" (never owned any Apple product other than a phone) the hassle of switching from iPhone is not worth it to me unless I can get an *easily accessible* SD card slot, along with a camera as good as any iPhone and other features I want.
I recently bought an iphone for my wife numerous times and was the one responsible for transferring her files over for her. This year, she upgraded to the iphone 14 and when I made the transfer. I said WOW, its that easy any person should be able to do it on his or her own. Apple did mature on this area of data transfer. I just followed the steps, linked her old phone with her new phone via wifi and viola! All her pics, apps and data transferred to her new phone, over the air, seamlessly.
Samsung's decision to provide 4 years of android updates and 5 years of security updates is a big selling point for me. It is even more than what Google is providing for their Pixel lineup!
I'm keeping my Galaxy S10 Plus. Still have an SD card slot and headphone jack. Plus there's just not enough of a "wow" factor. S7 to S8 was the last "wow"
I'm upgrading to the ultra from Note 9 (even with SD slot & 3.5mm jack sacrifice). I think that there definitely isn't much "wow" for me, but the S22 looks to have improved in all categories so it will be very long term for me. The same way my current Note 9 has been.
100% agree with you s7 to s8 was the last wow , and i am about to upgrade from note 10+ to s22 ultra but i feel stupid that after waiting for almost 3 years to buy a better phone with same design it takes the great feeling of holding a new phone
Same here, bought my S10+ as I was impressed by the under screen fingerprint sensor at the time, I'm waiting for the next big 'innovation' before upgrading, possibly a new front camera solution. I also prefer the centered camera on the S10+
@@jordan_w I upgraded from the S10+ to the S21 Ultra 256GB model. Losing the headphone jack and SD card option was a bitch. However, the 120Hz and far better cameras really stand out. HOWEVER, is it a WOW upgrade? Nope not at all just a nice upgrade! So if you like your S10+ or S10 do not fell you MUST upgrade as the battery life is still brilliant on that phone it was 2 years later before I passed it onto my old man!
Had my S22-ultra 512 for a couple of months and it is a perfect device for this ol timer. Cannot fault any part of it with 512 Gb storage . It's actually quicker than all but my last 3 gaming pc's so there is no waiting when you want to do anything. Expensive , yes, but very gratifying in it's performance and attributes. Good review too Linus :)
I like the fact that they went back to 19:9 aspect ratio on the Ultra. The phone is honestly great, both a breath of fresh air and really a mature product. I could definitely imagine using it.
The non expandable storage is a painful deal breaker as a 256gb Note 10 plus owner. Samsung is definitely finding sneaky ways to raise their profit margin with moves like this. I'm happy to see a tech reviewer actually highlight this issue. I also don't know why they are still committed to the curved display on the Note as it effectively takes away usable spen real estate on the sides of the screen. Either way I'm glad to see the Note is back, fingers crossed they bring the SD card back next year.
Unfortunately I think it's gone forever. Why would they give us a feature when they could just charge you for it upfront instead? That being said I'm happy they're offering discounts right now on the models with bigger storage. Definitely something I wanted to take advantage of.
I understand why samsung pulled the SD card feature, it's simply more profit. But I wonder why phone companies don't make a version with expandable memory, and charge more for it??? Would make sense for the company, and I'm sure most people would gladly pay extra for an SD card slot
On one hand as a Note 9 128gb owner, I can say that the storage was more than enough for me, even though while upgrading I'll take at least 256gb version - I've had Note 9 since it's release and still got 23gb available. On the other hand, I like having an option whether should I use 2nd slot for SD card or another SIM. Can't agree about curved display though - I really like both visualy and when holding phone in hands. Indeed, for someone it can be annoying having curved borders while writing with your S pen, but I see those borders as the way of keeping you within the screen AND having visually excelling style. I was also surprised that there are people who dislikes Note's strict corners and monolith build...Well, folks....that's Note. What REALLY bothers me is the lack of 3.5 jack, hate wireless crap.
By charging these kinds of prices, they get 1/4 of the sales they could, while those people look to spend the same money on the used market and get more comfortable not having the latest software updates, roms or buy midrange.
Referencing 9:10, you can use RAM Plus to increase the ram another 8GB by allocating internal storage. In Canada, Samsung offered a free memory upgrade so pretty much everyone is going to be walking around with the 256GB model nowadays. I think that's a pretty fair since there were so many complaints about SD cards and expandable storage.
I'm a Google Fi user, ordered the 256 gb model and right now they giving $600 in credit towards service. Effectively makes the phone $600. I hear straight from Samsung has a few good deals too.
Samsung giving you 150€, mostly reasonable Trade-In (350€ for Note 10+) and a pair of Galaxy Buds. Most carriers here seem to have better Deals though. Vodafone definitely does. Can get the Phone for like 760€. Additional Galaxy Buds and Galaxy Tab are included as well.
I traded my old s10e for 1000 and got a 100 dollar samsung credit thru Verizon. So I'm giving them an 80 dollar phone and they are giving me an s21 ultra for under 200 bucks.
The S-pen for screenshots and gifs is very underrated, especially when you need to mark something. I'm on the Z Fold3 right now, and you get somewhat of a similar experience, but I'm unable to use it most of the time as I have to store the pen separate.
Being able to accurately circle something small on a screenshot with a stylus for your aging parents be able to understand what you mean by "press that icon" is priceless
Likewise!! I pre-order the phantom black 512gb version. Trading in my S-21Ultra. I'm gonna try and cool off a few years with trading in. I started trading in with the Note8, and haven't stopped!🤯 BUT IM STOKED!!💯🔥
With these prices, even if you have the money, it is getting to the point where it's better to just run your flagship into the ground, then jump into the budget or midrange in order to feel excited about an upgrade. Better to spend the budget on more exciting daily carry
I just buy the previous gens premium, so I bought an s8 when the s10 came out, just changed it because the screens smashed either side and got an s20 fe for £200. I prefer the s8 just because I'm not a fan of the notch, pixel density is great and it felt much better in my hands, but buyers remorse!

As someone who upgraded a few months ago to an S21, I'm still not over the lack of an SD card either, it just makes no sense to have removed it. I'm also surprised samsung havent considered bringing back the fingerprint sensor on the back, maybe it's because I've gone from an S9, but the sensor felt a lot quicker than the under the screen ones.
Same here, I missed it quite a lot on my S21, I underestimate the amount of storage I needed and transferring all the data through a USB cable is a pain.
@@pixels_per_inch I've personally had to go for a google drive plan and it pains me every time the payment goes out. The newer phones we seem to be paying for a lot less than 2 or 3 years ago.
My end game phone is an s22 ultra with the fingerprint sensor on the back or somewhere good ergonomically like on the note 9. Ideally with the same great display as always, but uninterrupted by a camera setup. Under the screen camera would be the only way really. There's not too many options, so we have to wait for that tech to get better I guess... Oh and SD card slot, MST and IR.
@@HOBOsnake Only the SD card slot for me. Why do you want fingerprint scanner on the back? It's slower to reach, and you can't unlock whilst on a table. The S22 Ultra fingerprint scanner is instant. Literally the MOMENT you touch it, it's unlocked. It doesn't get any better than that.
Foldables are still not mature enough for most users, especially given how expensive the displays are to repair/replace relative to their durability. I would prefer the S22 Ultra over any of the Samsung foldables (already Pre-Ordered the Ultra).
@@NGEvangeliman Display is still pretty fragile even if Samsung claimed it is more durable. Just a quick Google search shows quite a number of complaints about their Z series phones already having cracks under normal use despite being new or in use for only a few weeks.
I've owned both generations of the Z Flip. From two years dropping them on all sorts of hard things, I can confidently say that the folding mechanism makes a Z Flip 3 more durable than any slab flagship in the world. I also have an S21 Ultra. That one has a nasty hairline crack across the expensive front display. My even older Note 9 looks pretty much like Linus' old Note 9, full of cracks everywhere. The folding mechanism absorbs a lot of the worst impact, while it perfectly protects the display when you don't use the phone.
@@amirali.m7621 If you factor in Samsung's quite reasonable trade-in values for old phones and the fact that they give store credit which further lowers how much you'll pay (in my country at least), I'd say it's not that expensive. I love that hoodie. Also, the first thing I noticed after putting it in my hand, was the weight difference from my previous Note. And the 10x camera zoom is ridiculously crazy good.
I've fast charged my S9 for 3 years, coming on 4. I know it isn't as fast as recents now. Yes, the battery is degrading now and doesn't run for even half a day haha but it was probably time I had a new phone or battery by now anyway. The screen has also burnt in quite badly, which I didn't think would happen on recent Samsung displays as my old S1 had it as bad as this.
OLED burn-in is inevitable, no matter what you do to prevent it. My A50 already has a few burned in spots, like the status bar battery icon, even though I try to be really cautious.

@@dominikriegler thanks for your input. Helpful point of view! To answer it. I never use the 3.5mm jack due to BT for headphones and in the car. Micro SD is used for the music and pictures but I am living comfortably with a 128GB card. Therefore I expect to be able to live with 256GB or better the 512GB version of the phone. In the end maybe will even go for 1TB just for giggles...might sound arrogant but I like to treat myself as I am always using my phones for approx. 4 years and therefore feel like I earned it🤣
The one deficiency of Ultra or Note 9 that my family of four with Note 9's all have happened is the curved bezel display is wicked susceptible to cracking exactly at the apex of the curve even with good case protection. Samsung needs to go to a flat screen design like the S22 plus. If our note 9's didn't have the curved glass they'd all be still working fine regardless of there age.
I've fallen out of love with the Fold too. It's back to the noteish S22 Ultra. I wanted a phone that turned into a tablet, but I ended up with an annoyingly delicate micro tablet that folded into a chonky TV remote. I'm now enjoying apps and content that actually use all of the screen, and it's a solid screen too. It feels like a classic case of technology trying to make a use case but creating more problems than it solved, like 3D TV. I can picture the ideal foldable phone in my mind. It's the same thickness as the s22 ultra, doesn't have a crease, the internal screen is made of magic non existent glass that bends with no curvature radius, and of course the internal and external screens are both 16 x 9 aspect ratios because the laws of physics are altered when the device opens.
imo when you try to combine 2 things into something that "does everything" you end up with the worst of both worlds. Just get a tablet and phone, it's cheaper and better.
Video idea: I'd love a comparison of 3-5 year old smartphones from different brands (each one with the latest available OS). Would be really interesting to compare how each of them has held up in terms of longevity, because that's actually the most important criterion for me when buying a new smartphone. I'm currently looking to upgrade my almost 5 year old LG G6 (R.I.P LG). Even though I love Android's customizability and tinkering headroom, I'm considering switching to iPhone just because of the long software support and the fact that older iPhones don't seem to turn into a stuttering useless paperweight when updating the OS. Longevity is a deciding factor in my opinion, not just because using phones for longer is better for the environment, but it also puts the high upfront cost of an iPhone into perspective and could actually make it a better value option if you get two more years of (pleasurable) use out of it compared to an Android phone.
Meh SD cards kinda suck. I'm glad companies have for the most part abandoned them. Having worked in a tech support role in a previous job, the number of times I had to deal with customers in tears due to SD cards full of memories unceremoniously dying for no reason cemented my mindset that they could go the way of the dodo. There are too many good cloud solutions and easy methods of offloading to more reliable storage solutions these days to be dependent on unreliable SD cards.
@@stephenpatterson8056 Thats still no reason to just remove a feature just because it has some flaws. On my 64GB S8 I have the 128GB card almost completely full with movies and such because I'm not gonna use that much data to stream whatever I wanna see all the time when I'm not at home. Just because there are other ways of storing data, doesn't mean that something as fundamental as upgrading internal storage should be removed. If one is worried about using SD cards, they should just not use it. Its not like its mandatory. Thats the defining characteristic of a feature: You CAN use it; you don't NEED to.
@Taku Good thing you could get these with tons of storage built in, eh? We're in 2022. If you need an abnormally crazy amount of storage for a library of movies or whatever (data is unlimited on damn near every phone plan available these days, so not sure why you're so precious about it) then you can get a phone with a humongous storage capacity. SD cards though, for smart phone use, need to just go away. They're unreliable and can cause noticeable phone stability issues. That was another issue I encountered a lot. People that bought dirt cheap ass quality SD cards off amazon then wondering why their phone would slow to a crawl in normal operation. Too many variables and too many better solutions.
just bought an lg v50 for 200$. That phone is insane for the price. Beautiful display and speaker with an headphone jack with an Hifi DAC. Also the processor is snap 855 which is the version of Snap 8 gen 1 without thermal problem. That's why you dont need these money grab from any big cooparation.
@@memzz3670 Yup, it was on sale at my local Best Buy for Cybermonday, and then they were running an enhanced trade-in for my S21 so in the end I only paid $200 for it.
@@tk8tray1 I bought my S21 refurbished for $500 almost 2 years ago and traded it in for $600, so I don't consider it to even be a part of the equation because of how good the trade-in was. Also if you are trying to argue that the S21 is better than the S22 Ultra, you're very incorrect in many ways 🤣
SO... I bought a POOP ton of S-pens in my day, literally probably have 50 floating around here somewhere as we speak. ANYWAYS... the different color S Pens from the Note 9 and on, had a really cool little easter egg built in. When using the screen off note or whatever they were calling it; you pull out a Red S-Pen the ink would be red. Pull out a Blue S-Pen the ink would be Blue. So on and so forth. Black though would have white ink. Kind of neat little easter egg that I bet not a lot of people knew about. Obviously the S-Pen had to be one of those that you had to charge to use their Air Gesture gimmicks that never worked well on any of the devices I've tried them on, including the current Tab S7 Plus I use to this day.
With all the trade in deals, upgrade offers and other promos I traded in my S20 ultra and got the 512gb S22 ultra model for under $600. Plus with the $250 credits I grabbed the S8 tab ultra for $800. Preorder incentives were really good.
@@jesmondborg125 why would I lie about my experience. Samsung offered a lot of deals and promos if you ordered directly through them instead of a carrier. $100 off, free memory upgrade, extra credits for trades, $250 add on credits which on the S22 ultra they added another $50 if used to get a galaxy tab s8 ultra bundled. Only part I left out was finding my old S10 and they took credits on that too.
128GB is a huge issue when the OS uses 30GB partition, and games like Call of Duty or Genshin uses 20 GB. My music on my SD card takes up 66 GB. Will be skipping the S22. As I gradually adopt my smartphone to be my main computer, a lack of a SD card slot is a deal breaker.
Seriously i carry my music and videos on the sd card.. where are the flagships with an sd card option. I want to upgrade but i have 400gb of media on the sd card..
Yes, games is as good as an example as 4k video as to how easy it is to eat up tons of GB storage. There just isn't a substitute for the time saved swapping 1 TB SDXCs on my phone
He’s right about oneplus. They have really slipped on the software side. I wanted to think about getting the op10 but I’ve just been burned too much on the software side. And Samsung just feels way too expensive.
I love the note series because of its size, and the pen because I could take notes in class with it and not have to carry around a ton of spiral notebooks anymore, I got really attached to the Fold 3 for the same reasons, except that it does not have a dedicated pen insert, but still for me, after having a folding phone, I just do not think I can go back to anything else at this point unless I absolutely had to.
My Galaxy A22 has dual sim support, one of them acts as SD reader and headphone jack. It's incredible that mid-range phones, even from the same manufacturer, come with more things than premium ones.
Can we get some (sustained load) benchmarks between the EU/US versions? Would be interesting to know how they compare, especially since Exynos is now using RDNA2 IP.
My 512gb/8gb ram Note 9 is finally getting retired, ordered the 1TB (so same as I have with note 9 with 512 SD) Genuinely excited and relieved about the S22 Ultra.
I’ve always wondered - for what the actual fuck do you need a TB of storage on a phone? I don’t even need that on my computer since i keep what I can on Google Drive. So what you do with all that storage😭
@@toma.minchev It's for people who don't want to keep their data hostage to a big tech company and have to pay a monthly ransom. It's for people who don't have perfect network connections at all times need lots of data on hand. Not for your average user.
Biggest reason I see for so much storage is for photographers. They can keep a majority of their relevant portfolio always accessible to their clientele without pulling out their laptops or hard drives. Personally, I have my 100gb music collection stored on my phone, so I can minimize my Spotify and data usage. A decent RAW photo catalog, large amount of apps and business related programs. It east up 250gb pretty quickly. I'm constantly shifting data on and off my phone regularly. I also have my PoS for my small business, along with some backend for my e-commerce... I definitely wish I could still have an SD card, but im limited by it by any stretch
Just ended up ordering the S22 Ultra the other day to replace my S10+. Had planned on keeping the S10+ for years to come as I'm not one to waste money on the latest phone every year (and I REALLY resent the removal of both the headphone jack and microSD card on these newer phones), but the USB-C port is totally worn out already. It will lose the connection if I just breathe on it, if I can even get it to charge and connect in the first place. So forget about charging in the car. This is the first USB-C device I've owned that I use regularly, and so far USB-C being more durable has definitely not been my experience. Anyway, since Verizon (I think all the major carriers are offering the same deals) was offering $1,000 trade-in value for my S10+, along with selling the next storage size up for the price of the lower size, I figured may as well go all in. This will be my first Note-class phone, and I'm looking forward to it.
How is ur usb-c port already worn out? I didn't even know that was a thing. My Note 10's usb-c port looks brand new. Looks like someone needs to be more careful when plugging in their devices.
S6 is still my favorite phone. Preordered the Ultra so hopefully that changes. I don't like the camera bump but hopefully the camera itself makes me fine with it. Would rather have a headphone jack and sd slot over a stylus but I'll adjust. Excited for a heavy phone.
@Andy Foster Still not that impressed with the camera. Because of the 5 lenses you need to make sure you're on the right mode (3:4 108mp, 3:4, 1:1, or 9:16) for what you're shooting or you can get a bad picture. S6, one camera, beautiful every time.
I've had my S22 Ultra since day one. I've had about every major phone out there at this point, and this is by far my favorite. Only thing close would be the iPhone 7+ I briefly had, but which met a sudden, wet demise when I assumed it was rated for swimming. I assumed wrong. But I can't think of anything else I'd want from it. It's powerful, loud, responsive, has a great pen, and plenty of real estate for my sausage fingers. Also, it charges insanely fast. I have the super fast charger and it will fully charge from 30% in about 45 minutes. Even while watching RUclips or playing games, it will charge in an hour.
I've had my Note 20 Ultra for less than 6 months, so I'm not looking to switch anytime soon, but I do find it interesting that Samsung is going out of their way to make their highest end S series more note-like. Makes me wonder if there is a continuing future for the Note line and what that looks like.
I really doubt it. Having one single flagship range is a better strategy. It's makes the first "ultra" phone that really makes if different and worth it. Rather than it just being a larger phone with a better battery etc They learnt from the note 20 that a cheaper note will never work. So adding the plus range then this as the ultra really does make sense
There isn't a future for the note line lol, at least, not the way it used to be. The reason Samsung never released a Note phone after the Note20 Ultra was because the S22 Ultra and the Note22 Ultra would be fusing together. They were already extremely similar phones and Samsung saw no reason to continue selling both of them, so they took the better design of the two (the Note) and the naming/release time of the S and made them the same phone. If any phone comes out with the Note name after this, I suspect it'll be 100% fold-related, as it makes way more sense for the fold and note to fuse.
No chance we get a full review of those phones now is there? I know they're in the market for a while now but I miss the times, which weren't that long ago when Linus also made a full review of these flagship phones (including the iPhones).
Note20 ultra is currently my secondary video shooter and that massive noticably improvement on stabilization is a big big yes for me. The downside are no expandable memory sd card but 512gb variant will be good
11:05 It's always Hertz Hz It's not 1 Hz and 2 Hzs Hertz is a unit and does not change because of its own quantity. 1 kg and 2 kg also doesn't change, for example.
Well yeah, Samsung really turned things around with the One UI overlay/gui for Android. I had avoided them for years, until recently, when the only option on my carrier was either mid range phones, refurbished phones or the S20 FE 5G. So I ended up with the S20 FE 5G, and the One UI experience has been some of the best gui from a third party I've seen in a long time.
I'm upgrading a Note 10+ to an S22 Ultra. I'm getting the 512GB model. I was disappointed that 16GB ram wasn't available (it was an option on the Note) but there is a new feature in Android 12 called "Ram Plus", which is basically a storage-based virtual ram... by default on my Note is sized at 4GB. The S22 models seem to support up tp 16GB. One other thing of interest to me is that Samsung is recreating Apple interoperability by more closely integrating with Windows. Another huge announcement made at the big reveal is that while in the past Samsung guaranteed 2 Android version updates they now support 4 generations of Android and 5 years of security updates. This apparently outdoes Google's update policy and nearly matches Apple.
@@jesmondborg125 Iphones don't need as much RAM since Apple make both the phone and the OS which means that they can make it much more optimised than Samsung can.
Every other Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 phone throttles like crazy and runs hot. I am skeptical that Samsung is going to be decent here. Not until gaming phones with some active cooling come out will we see less throttling, IMO.
MagPC already tested the S22 lineup and the throttle a LOT. They go down to 75% performance after just a few minutes and in benchmarks like GFX they go from 29fps down to just 18 and in Geekbench Single Core from ~1200 to ~800 after a short period of time. It's pretty much QSD810 all over again.
@@Raja995mh33 Damn. My biggest reason to want to upgrade to either the S22+ or the Ultra is so I can game and run emulators like AetherSX2 and Dolphin emulator better and seeing this is quite disappointing. I'm interested to see if the Exynos models fare any better for prolonged gaming use. And if so, the hilariously sad thing would be my region getting the SD versions for the first time after being shafted with the weaker Exynos chips for the older S series phones only to now get worse chips with the SD models for the S22 series.
This is the one... finally something that I feel like is worthy to replace my Note 9 (512GB). I hope they get delivered in time or at least this month.

I want a note, I loved my note 4 back in the day, it was fantastic... I just don't think 3x the price of the note 4 on release is justifiable in what I'm getting lol.
I wish you talked a little bit about how the phones perform on 4G/5G bandwidth. I understand it can be difficult to eliminate variables between tests there, but there can be a huge difference in network performance between phones and as someone who regularly uses the hotspot on my phone, it's been a critical part of selecting which phone to get.
Your ISP and their load balancing will be more important than your phones comm ability. Coming from personal experience I can have the greatest connection on earth but the second 1 too many people connect to a mast they'll throttle you to hell and back. Says something when you have a 70mbs connection drop to 5mbs in a space of 5 mins in the same spot. Don't even see the point in 5G if they don't increase the bandwidth connection of the transmitters. What's the point. Your 5G almost becomes 3G once it's loaded. 4G was BS, I can't see anything improving for a long time. Your best bet would be getting a phone with dual sims with different ISPs and just jump between the two for hotspot connection speeds.
@@TheMaw365 Of course the ISP side of things can make it a moot point but that's not been the case here. Years ago I bought a Samsung A40, because it was cheap, I didn't need a phone that could do anything but calls/sms/hotspot and figured "4G is 4G". Got maybe 50Mbps on a good day. Looked into why it was so bad and bought an S10 instead (not 5G) and got consistent 200+ Mbps even on bad days, 300+ on good days in the same exact location. I later switched to a OnePlus 8 to get 5G, getting consistently around 300Mbps. Now I'm on an iPhone 13 mini in the same position getting 1Gbps+ on good days on 5G, ~400Mbps on bad days. My A40 (which I still use for other reasons) still cannot do any better it did back then. Just going from the OnePlus 8 to the iPhone instantly doubled or tripled the available bandwidth to me depending on the day and they're both flagship 5G phones. With all that said I do realize it might be a rare situation where there's enough capacity on the ISP's side for this to be a thing to this extent.
I really miss the Note but the Ultra seems like a worthy successor. these new phones are almost tempting me away from my iPhone. But lemme see what this year's iPhones are like before making any major decisions to switch from iPhone to the Samsung Ultra. I once used the Samsung Galaxy 4 which was ok for like a month but I was honestly regretting buying that phone over the iPhone 5 after a month with thing. So if Samsung really wants me to get their phones over the iPhone they really have to be amazing on battery and UI and really manage the bloatware it comes with because those were the issues I had with the Samsung Galaxy S4. I guess expandable storage would have been nice to still have but coming from the iPhone I'm used to not using an SD card or a headphone jack.
Hey, my S21 is still rocking strong! Debrand skin on it, and some basic case. Dang did I ever drop it a lot already. I love how phones are so rock solid today. And the 6" and aspect ration of the S21 are perfect for me and my hands. I really like how they build on the design and improved it with the S22! Honestly. I like what I see. But I won't switch. S21 gotta hold up at least 3 years.
As someone who loves OnePlus you hit it on the money with the software going from perfect to what it is now. This is my planned new phone when my 6t finally is done
I really want to see you addressing their inflexible approach to photo shooting quality. The thing is that as Galaxy user you are not in control of the target resolution, photo is taken in highest available. This leads to bloating of pictures folder, especially if you tend to use raw formats; it also stacks quite well with SD card removal and death of Samsung Cloud storage, which was previously provided to Galaxy users for free. It also has higher power consumption required to post-process huge images (1880x4000 in my case) with modern upscale/beautification techniques: on my Note 20U I'm regularly seeing how battery melts by 1% per minute when actively taking pictures. There's definitely more adding up to it and I hope that eventually someone qualified will dig into this photoshooting mess and clarify where invisible hand of the market is dragging us, fellow consumers.
I've been using my S10 for three years since it was released and I'm not feeling any need to upgrade. This phone rocks! I'm wondering if it will last another seven years. That would be incredible. I'll never buy a phone that doesn't have a headphone jack or expansion slot. It's just not worth it IMO.
no sd card slot = no buy for me. im not paying outrageous increase price for the slightly bigger storage( 256gb instead of 128gb) when for the same cost i can have a 1tb sd card. which i can change out when needed.

Realme seem to be heading there with the GT line, they threw Snapdragon 870 in s budget monster last year and might do similar again.

You're just not going to get that bargain phone. I bit the bullet and got Sony Xperia to get those features at full price. It takes demand to get that OnePlus budget flagship kind of device. That the point of the A Lineup by Samsung
My S9 plus has cracked glass on the back, and a horrible scratch on the front, but, yeah. I'm with you.
SD cards are history in phones, such unrealiable technology. I had the same opinion as you years ago, but multiple of my MicroSD cards have malfunctioned, resulting in data loss.
And I'm not talking about off-brand cards.
The Samsung Note 20 ultra has a SD Card slot. Upgraded from a S9+ and well worth it. Highly recommended.
I'm still rocking my note 8 but considering sacrificing and getting the s22 ultra
I pre-ordered, but it's a bummer not having the SD card expansion option.
I got it in green
especially when the higher resolution photos and videos you get from the cameras take up much more space
I agree but at least they are giving away the upgrade.

What's really really nice about Samsung is the integration with windows. When I'm working, I practically never touch my phone because I can make and take calls from laptop. I haven't tried it with other android, but the link to windows is already installed on the S10+. It can also copy paste from the laptop to phone and vice versa. @@toasty1142 Absolutely.
Hehehe
They need to stick those features (camera, s-pen silo) to the Z Fold 4 to REALLY have THE ultimate phone.
Not going to happen with the cameras they are too think to be packaged in _half_ of something
Agreed. I have a case that holds the sPen on mine and it makes it quite bulky. Also the size of the Fold pen is pretty big, wouldn't fit in the phone, I don't actually know if I'd want it to be smaller, pros and cons to it being smaller
Also I don't care for the external display the narrowness feels awkward to me
The Ultimate phone would have a headphone jack

I thought that's an error on my S8. The blacks lifts up and it looks horrid when it does that.
@Bryan William but makes what u r watching watchable under direct sunlight its gotten way better on newer flagships
I used a samsung a70 for 2 years and screen started lookingt yelowish but still a great display
yeah I have s20 fe and everyone complained about its legibility in direct sunlight but in auto brightness it ramps up the brightness so much that color temp changes probably display tech limitations as they are all amoled and oleds have high brightness probs as no white leds like in lcds
Apparently the Exynos is on par with the Qualcomm 8 Gen 1 and has less heat output.

The camera at least has been better than iPhone for a number of years now
I recently bought an iphone for my wife numerous times and was the one responsible for transferring her files over for her.

Would make sense for the company, and I'm sure most people would gladly pay extra for an SD card slot
shhhh just be a good sheep and keep on buying them anyway
On one hand as a Note 9 128gb owner, I can say that the storage was more than enough for me, even though while upgrading I'll take at least 256gb version - I've had Note 9 since it's release and still got 23gb available. On the other hand, I like having an option whether should I use 2nd slot for SD card or another SIM.
Can't agree about curved display though - I really like both visualy and when holding phone in hands. Indeed, for someone it can be annoying having curved borders while writing with your S pen, but I see those borders as the way of keeping you within the screen AND having visually excelling style.
Remember when the Note Series was like the one with all the features? Nowadays its spiritual successor doesn't even have a headphone jack or SD slot.
Wait it doesn't have SD slot?
@@duckquacks9629 nope, doesn't have one anymore

This will be my first Note-class phone, and I'm looking forward to it.
ok
Trolling Dbrand during their sponsored spot is the reason I'm here.
Rather than it just being a larger phone with a better battery etc
They learnt from the note 20 that a cheaper note will never work. So adding the plus range then this as the ultra really does make sense
There is no more note line. It's been replaced with the foldables. Now we get the note features in the S series Ultra.
A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. S22 ultra is a Note 22 by a different name.
No chance we get a full review of those phones now is there? I know they're in the market for a while now but I miss the times, which weren't that long ago when Linus also made a full review of these flagship phones (including the iPhones).

Every other Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 phone throttles like crazy and runs hot. I am skeptical that Samsung is going to be decent here. Not until gaming phones with some active cooling come out will we see less throttling, IMO.
It gets better battery life when performing smaller tasks
MagPC already tested the S22 lineup and the throttle a LOT. They go down to 75% performance after just a few minutes and in benchmarks like GFX they go from 29fps down to just 18 and in Geekbench Single Core from ~1200 to ~800 after a short period of time.

This was just the unboxing and first impressions. He has to put his sim card in it for service.
@Carl Gunderson I think it would still be useful as a comparison between devices.
Apparently, these phones are the only ones in North America with the new Qualcomm modem which performs much better in areas with poor service.
8:00 that maybe due to the video enhancer feature. Turning it off might help.
