Thought I'd throw in my two cents worth since I replaced my 97 TJ's starter yesterday, 1-22-23. My replacement was going smoothly until it was that upper 15mm bolt's turn. I could not break it loose no matter what I tried. The 14mm lower bolt was no problem. After an hour and a half trying all sorts of things, I decided to see if my HF impact wrench would work. I had eliminated it this whole time because I thought there was no way it would fit. Even my deep set 15mm socket conspired to prevent it from getting in there. Or so I thought. No problem! Within seconds, the bolt was out! If I'd used it first, the whole replacement would have taken me about half an hour. Fired right up. Another few thoughts, the tapping with a hammer worked, it got me started, albeit weakly, and able to get the Jeep home where my impact wrench was gathering dust. My electrical connections were secured by an 8mm nut and 13mm nut that both must be removed before the bracket holding the two cables together can be removed. This was my second starter replacement in my whole life and probably my last - I turn 70 in four weeks.
I watched a few videos before changing out the starter on my 2001 Wrangler and I think this was the best of them all. Clear and to the point. I appreciate that the troubleshooting is in a separate video since I already know that I am changing out the starter. I am no mechanic by any means, and I had this done in well under an hour. The top bolt gave me some trouble. I tried to use a wrench like in the video but found a short handle socket wrench did the trick for me. Thanks for the instructions.
Great job Jerry !!! I did notice something that others may have not noticed. When you installed the new starter , your bolts were nice and clean. Most people would skip that step of reassembly.
So many fancy videos in $100k garages. Everybody says they have no where to work on their own cars. Finds pile of snow, a tarp and fix your jeep! Well done, sir! Repairs for the real world
You rock, straight to the point and so freakin helpful. You gotta sub. for your great video. Lastly, I have the hood louve you have, not installed yet. Di you find it hard to keep a good temp in winter and does water ever get all over your belt? Thanks brotha
Love your videos, my starter from 2006 just took a shot, slow start like battery was dead but I have a Optima red top I bought in 2018 so it should be good and after testing at a battery store they knocked the starter while cranking and poof there is my problem. After swapping it out (less than 15 minutes) I'm good to go. Thanks again for your channel, subscribed for life.
Gotta say thanks for your tip about getting the top bolt off. I struggled with my straight drive for too long. I ran to Lowe’s and grabbed a flex ratchet and it came right off. Bad news is then starter I ordered from Advance was not the right one, even though it shows in their system. It has the wrong connection. Waiting for another starter to come in to finish the job.
Still love the video, had to watch it again...Replaced my starter, the part was bad! That is twice now I've gotten a bad part. My truck, the alternator I bought was bad from the box, now the starter for the jeep! Man, they don't make parts like they used to. Hope you're well.
Great vid! It was noted early on that this vid was only on changing starter and a separate vid for finding out 'why' TJ won't start... I looked for that vid. Has that vid been posted? Ty in adv! Cheers!
Used this video to get me through. I had it done in about 30 minutes. It took me longer to find my tools to be honest! Lol. Great video thanks for posting it.
i am enthusiasticly watching this. so far mine looks nothing like this. i think drunk but hey it works, MacGyver touched mine. i have one oversized hex head (requiring lots of tiny open end turns as all around will not accept a socket) and an External Torx head (never heard of guess it did come with jeeps) that someone rounded off. id like to renew the bolts. is one head better than the other? i would think hex would be a more common tool if you broke down. thank you. very nice instructionals.
Just a heads up, this is for an automatic trans. My manual looks a little different and the long bolt goes in the bottom/front bolt hole. Edit: it's also a different model starter, seemingly more expensive, for no good reason.
So I don't know if it's my starter or the clip/wire. It doesnt always do it, but when the starter isnt responding I just unplug the wire(mine doesnt have a push clip) and plug it back in and it starts up
Super helpful! Got my old starter out yesterday in about 30 minutes. Had to finagle my Breaker bar through the side to get the the starter bolts loose but I finally heard that crack and was able to use my flex stubby wrench to get them out! All cleaned up and ready for the new starter. Bout to put in now! Fingers crossed this solves the issue as I ran many tests before ending up with a jammed/bad starter verdict
After some testing with a multimeter signs still pointed to a jammed starter. Ordered a starter from 4wheel parts said it would fit my 65th anniversary edition 2006 Jeep Wrangler, it did not. Ordered the correct starter from AutoZone it arrived today. Installed in 15-20 mins and it fired right up! Mother fu(King beer time 🍺
I just bought a tj .It starts up fine but I noticed the the positive wire on the starter is connected to the starter but is not attached to battery. So how is the vehicle starting if positive wire from starter is not hooked up to battery?
Thanks Man! I have a crap manual that was saying the top bolt comes in from the front.... Found your video, and without all the BS of most channels verbal diarrhea. you should change the channel name to NBSK Garage!
Great Job with the video, just two tips: dont call the Solenoid switch "This" also remember, some starters are sold with no lubrication on the gear teeth or shaft, applying some type of durable grease/lubricant would help to make the new starter last a bit longer. Otherwise I think you did a great job with this, very clear picture and audio...
This just happened to us. Thanks for the Video! a tip. the clip connection - not easy to see or get to. Long Bolt Bottom, short bolt top. All fixed! Thanks for the "Help"!
Thank you for putting this together and as the others said, being to-the-point on this. Getting that camera in there could not have been easy. Will be doing this shortly on our TJ.
Jerry- Love your show, I just had the same problem on my 06 tj, my repair times was a bit longer because stopped for a beer between removal and install. Keep the Jeep vids coming
Great nice and simple. The harder part was to remove the connector lol. Mine went bad after running thru dirty water, lesson learned. It would stop working randomly, I will hit it with a hammer for a quick fix, but it gets old really fast hehe.
Lucky i just replaced by battery that was really old and the starter relay and its still no crank. Ordering a starter now, hopefully it will solve the issue
So I replaced my starter and I’m still having the same issue. All power accessories work but the engine isn’t turning over. Any ideas what I could check next? Maybe the new starter was bad out of the box?
@@benbarker4241 I discovered mine had an aftermarket security system installed…I thought it was factory. My locksmith friend opened the case around the steering column and pulled the fuse out if the security line. It fired right up after that. I’d be willing to bet you might have a similar situation.
Intrade Motor we still use inches on bolts for a lot of things, most cars I’ve worked on here is the US including my wrangler have a combination of metric and SAE... which is rather annoying. @@TestDontguess I'm trying to today with my 2004 and that sucker wont budge, maybe I'm weak, but my hands are raw and bloodied trying to get enough leverage to pop it loose
If l didn’t have a skid plate over the entire bottom and had better tools and was not on a public street, l would have attempted this. Unfortunately my TJ’s starters like dying without any notice in public places. I was 300 miles from home and found a great mobile mechanic to fix it on the street in 2 hours. This is starter #2. The first one went at 71k and 11 years. This one lasted 8.5 years and 84k 🤷♀️🫤

Yep, just turned 70 myself and bought the rebuild. Easy install just used a cheater to take out that top ahole.
Good for you!
Got right to the point, and described the process clearly without any BS. Thank you!
Agree!!!
Yeah it's really nice to see the boom boom this is what you need without all the nonsense
yeah, that was pretty cool
You mean he didn't recite his family's history going back to 1760 along with all the dogs his family owned. So, disappointed!
