been in the motor trade for the last 40 years, and used many vehicles for my private running, but after using range rovers for a while, I bought a freelander2. The best driving vehicle I have ever owned. it drives excellently, and after 3 or4 years, only standard sevicing garage bills. Really a great fan of the freelander2, and will run it as long as I can, and probably buy another.

Got one now which I've had for 6 years, 80000k's. Replaced throttle body at 120 k's and just had the timing belt and water pump done. No other stuff apart from regular maintenance. Comfy for distance, tows well and is reasonably good for fuel (diesel 2,2). I've had a good experience and plan to keep it until I know where electric is going. No regrets.

I drive a 2007, 2.2 diesel and it has been fantastic. It has done 300,000 km and I have only changed the turbo and power steering pump. The engine pulls like new and the transmission shift smoothly. All electronics work fine. I love it. Only a few months ago I went all the way to Alice Springs, Cairns and back to Sydney, did a total of 10,000 klm. It never missed a beat and I only had to had half a litre of oil. I have done all its services and I have a full history on it. Cheap to keep and cheap to repair if you do it your self. I love the it. I will get another one when it is time to change it.

Oh dear.Must be an Oz thing. Generally they're pretty much reliable here in the UK. Never heard of sunroofs flying off ! As for handing, mine handles like it's on rail, despite the over size tyres I have fitted.
I've owned LR's for 30+ years and generally had pretty much every type from Series to Defenders. Even had a Disco that had 185000 miles on the clock when I sold it ! Only been stuck at the side of the road once and that was in my Freelander 1 V6 when the fuel pump died..
I've currently got a 2007 i6 HSE with 146,000 miles on the clock and heavily modified for off roading. It drives spot on , no squeeks, rattles or noises, no sagging headliner, none of the other issues in this video
My brother has a 2011 Sport LE with 171000 miles on the clock.
His neighbour has a 2011 HSE with 130000 miles on the clock.
Neither of them have any of the problems mentioned here either
Not really what I'd call unreliable considering the mileages.
However, I will say this - preventative maintenance is the key.If a component needs replacing, replace it rather than waiting for it to fail, as complete failure of one part often leads to failure elsewhere. Then it becomes expensive and "unreliable".
Most Freelander buyers, both Freelander 1 and 2, were first time Land Rover owners too. These people treated their vehicles like their family saloon - just slap on a budget tyre if they had a puncture, turned up the stereo if there was any noises. Only fix the MOT failures (UK) and leave the advisories to become failures later on. Then, when it all goes bang, blame the Land Rover as being unreliable.
Yes, Land Rover could and should do better. But as far as the F2 is concerned, look after it and it'll look after you.
Contrast this with my sister's Evoque. Spent more time at Land Rover for elusive faults than she actually drove it. Traded it in at 12000 miles !
Check out Freel2.com . Great Freelander 2 forum, even has some of you Ozzies on there.

I've got some tips, actually, for anyone who's thinking of buying one. Firstly - don't get the pre-facelift entry-level version (pre-2011) as shown in this review. Not only are they just getting a bit old, but there were a few technical issues that were sorted in later models. Also, if you aren't going to stump up for the higher-spec models, just buy something else. The thing that makes these worth buying are all the premium features like the nice interior, amazing Meridian sound system and other Land Rover goodies that have trickled down from the Range Rovers and Discovery - coupled with great driving dynamics, off-road etc etc. The top of the range HSE versions can be hard to find, but they are the ones to get. The entry-level ones are ok, but they don't make as compelling a value proposition.

    • @johnmalin1676
      @johnmalin1676 2 года назад

what was the technical issue in the pre 2011 ?, i am curious, because i owned a 2007 TD4, and didn't have any technical issues, only strange engine management readings when my Battery was on it's way out. Change the Battery, then no more issues.

Another thing to look out for is the seat belt where it comes out of the piller the belt cuts the plastic but only if its on off I.e delivery driver . Yes service it regular every 2 weeks when you wash it just check under the hood give things a wiggle wipe a clean rag round see if there's any oil about. I bought a 2012 HSE diesel model 7 years ago still drives beautifully at 220 000km. Soft suspension, very comfortable and excellent on dirt roads. Keeping the tire pressure precise is important for handling though. I have had oil leaks, but none the last four years. The transfer case center axel stripped which was costly and now the front axels' gears are starting to show play and the left front door lock is temperamental .

Nice to see a recent video on the LR2. I’ve got the same color/wheels as in the video, but trim is HSE so the entire body is the same color, HID headlights, dual sunroofs, privacy glass, heated windshield/mirrors/seats etc. I think we only get HSE trim in Canada so it’s an easy choice compared to Jeeps and other competition that comes in all ranges of trims. Just hit 200k, bought at 70k. Only issue since buying used in 2014 was having to replace the rear diff, which shouldn’t have to be done on a Land Rover but no other issues in 8 years. Many of the 2008-11 MY units had this defect, if it was a more common brand I’m sure it would have been a recall.

One electrical gremlin sorted and rear drive clutch pack failed, that is all. Timing belt change time interval is 9 years so due this year. These diesels do not have DPF’s last model was 2014 and Australia mandated this in 2016. Probably keep driving it till end of vehicle life as our second car, it is so flexible for our uses.

I've found the Freelander 2 to be pretty reliable. My sister's got a 2009 TD4-e (seems to be top of the range) one that my dad and I got from a salvage yard after it'd been in an accident, damage was minimal. Just needed the front wing and headlight replaced and the bumper and front corner of the bonnet repaired, and a replacement shock absorber and lower wishbone. The only things it's needed in the 4 or 5 years she's had it are a new battery, pair of front brake discs and pads (all standard 'wear and tear' parts) and a replacement steering angle sensor. We also did one for some friends of the family (it had almost the same damage!) that they wanted, a more basic TD4 model of the same year. They've had it about the same amount of time (they were bought about the same time from the same salvage yard), all that one's needed funnily enough is a battery and front discs and pads. Both are kept regularly serviced. My sister had a 2002 Freelander 1 TD4 before the FL2 and it never ever let her down, only thing it ever needed was a new clutch and flywheel, but it had done nearly 200,000 miles before we changed the clutch and the flywheel was original as far as we could tell so it had a right to be worn out!

Awesome review fellas. Have just discovered this channel & super hooked already. Great work with it all around. As for the F2... We've just taken a 2012 HSE 7000km around Europe in 4 weeks. It did not miss a beat & has SUCH a comfortable ride. Seat comfort & quality is right up there. Only issue is that the driver's seat doesn't have the best legroom at max so tall drivers doing long distance should take note. The engine just felt like it would go forever though, we were never in doubt about it. A mechanic we had check over it before we left did have to replace the throttle body though which is a common issue. Steering can get a bit tiring if you're doing a lot of city driving as it's pretty heavy. I've also owned a Disco 3 & probably enjoyed the F2 more.

I purchased my FL2 with 5K on the clock in 2012. It was a dealership demo vehicle. It now has 73K of mostly highway driving with a trip from Weipa to Cairns every 12 months for a dealership service. The biggest disappointments for me are exacly as you have show. I now have what looks like a flaky snake skin dash (even tho it has had a dash mat covering since I have owned this car), the collapsed interior roof lining and the sticky doors from melted glue. Otherwise the car has been pretty good to me. One headlight bulb, 1 rear wheel bearing and currently 2 electric windows don't work. Twice It has had some electrical gremlins put it into limp mode during the wet season. I found that if you very very slowly push the accelerator pedal you can climb up to and sit on 80kms comfortably to get home. Both times I parked the car up under the carport for about 3 weeks and it had come good, go figure. It's survived 3 or 4 kangaroos on the PDR between Weipa and Cairns. I only wish I could get a decent bull bar installed. Love my car. Very comfortable for and old man. Plan on keeping it for a bit yet. Thanks for your video.

Have a 2013 SD4 Evoque owned from new (now with 130k on the clock) which is basically the same powertrain (2.2l diesel and 6AT), infortainment and electrical in a modified Freelander platform. Now have serviced at a LR Independent on 6 monthly / 10k service intervals at their recommendation. I think this review really is bang on well informed. My experience:
    - EGR failed at 123k without warning. Stranded interstate. $2,800 repair.
    - Timing chain and water pump replaced at 120k (as per this review, mechanic recommended the both be done at the same time - and are sold at a kit). $2.2k from memory (but think that also included major service).
    - Interior has rattled since new - intensely frustrating - but otherwise looks new.
    - First 9 months of ownership were painful, riddled with faults, then hassle free for years - other than routine servicing - until recently
    - Odd electrical issue with dash faults that my mechanic sorts. There's a 12v battery under the passenger dash that caused a few (not all) of them before it was replaced about a year ago.
    - For the past 18 months, engine / trans occasionally loses power, especialy from takeoff. Intermittent, haven't isolated issue. Mechanic said has seen same thing on Freelanders, but different causes. Sort of need it to get worse to better isolate it than spend money on what it might be. No fault codes.
    - Silver trim on badge letters doesn't last, flakes off. Tatty. Replaced
Driven quite a lot of Freelanders (dealer loan cars), quite liked them in the day for what they were, but no way would I buy one now... too old and at the age where problems occur, that get expensive.

    • @ianbrown4242
      @ianbrown4242 2 года назад

While the early Evoques did share the power train of the later Freelander 2's, they are very different vehicles in most other respects. I've spoken to quite a few mechanics that say the FL2 have far less general issues than the Evoque. I wouldn't use the Evoque as a comparison to a FL2. BTW, your issue with the engine losing power on takeoff sounds like a throttle body issue - very common and cheap to fix.

I've been waiting for this one :-)
Good review! So, I've had a top-spec 2014 HSE for the past couple of years, and I love the thing. I'm not getting the steering and suspension issues you mention here, so I find the steering precise and involving. Like you say, visibility is incredible - even the wing mirrors are off a Disco and are huge. It's shocklingly good off road. The truth is, of course it's a Land Rover and you have to expect the issues you get with complex Euro cars. BUT the Freelander 2 is seriously under-valued for what you get as a complete package, so even with a couple of repairs (which aren't that expensive, given it's Ford parts-bin construction) it's still not that big a risk. You might say that there are other options, but I don't think that there's many that really cover all the same bases that this does, and as well. I've found that - in general - other owners really love them.

+1 from me that this is a reliable car. Been exceptional for me and my family. The bad reputation Land Rover carries brings the price down (bonus). And in the states it comes with a great 6 cylinder Volvo engine mated to a Japanese Aisin Warner transmission (same transmission used in lots of Toyota’s). Will things break? Yes, it’s a car with thousands of moving parts. But don’t be misled by the negative hype.
Additionally, Land Rover owners are enthusiasts and I find as a home mechanic that an enthusiast car is much more pleasant to own because knowledge of repairs are all over the internet from fond owners.

    @georgebutt3132 3 месяца назад

I've had a base model TD4 since 2011(new) and at 184,000km we still absolutely love it.
Love: Highway comfort and quiet; towing up to 2-tonnes braked, ‘that torque’, zero-fuss for 97% of off-roading.
Don’t love: fuel consumption (33-36mpg around town, 40mpg a rarity), no standard reversing camera (this model)
Hate: the local Land Rover dealership (I went to WA to buy mine, drove it back, lovely trip, still in front for $); ridiculous prices for genuine spares (but one can mail-order from the UK at half the dealer prices.)
Off-road: The Freelander will go most places a ‘genuine/low-range’ 4WD can go, except: extremely steep, deep mud/ruts, and dry sand (if mismanaged). All three times I’ve actually got it stuck were bellyflops because of Ground Clearance. With more clearance and diff-locks it would go even closer to a low-range 4WD. I’ve even had it towing ‘off-road’ and sometimes ‘it just walks over it’, other times it gets unexpected pause/slip, and one has to back up and rush it.
Problems: (almost none). Only gremlin was the LH rear window - would sometimes not close automatically - and then fix itself. And the (frankly, unnecessarily complicated) key system needed to be replaced in total at about 160Kkm, altogether about $1K at my super-competent local auto-electrician.
Engine/gearbox/differentials/other systems - no problems at all!
LH mirror got vandalised, and it was cheaper to get a replacement part shipped from the UK than it was to get one via the local dealer. (Tip: for nearly all significant spares).
Tips: If you’re going into the rough-stuff, the 17” rims are better - much wider range of off-road tyres (and on-road tyres). 18” rims are standard, and comfortable on-road, and have done rough stuff. 19” and above are a joke, IMHO. Pirelli Scorpion Zero (off-road version) perform very well in mud and clay.
The LR genuine towbar ‘box’ is 40mm; unique and single-purpose. An ARB is 50mm, a common fit for all manner of after-market inserts (and is half the price, and better!).
Tyre pressures are critical to best performance off-road, particularly sand, and on-road towing.
If you can find a low-mileage, well-cared for, properly serviced example, this really is a very pleasant car, particularly for long trips, perhaps with a medium caravan. But you’ll want to know in advance who and where the best LR mechanics are in your town (!). Routine servicing can be done by ‘ordinary mechanics’ but LR specialists will be better at preventative maintenance.

My Dad bought a TD4 Freelander 2 in 2014, one of the last Freelander 2's in Poland. It was a pain in the posterior from the beginnning. Countless warranty repairs. Less than a year after warranty expired (and less than 80k kilometers on the odo) the rear diff ate itself - dealer replaced that one for free as goodwill. Less than a year later the gearbox started leaking - 2k PLN to replace a stupid simering. Best part? It happened on the day that Polish MOT equivalent for the car was to expire - I had to ask the inspector guy for a favor or he wouldn't have passed me - and a day before an important family trip. A year after THAT the front left coil spring broke and destroyed the tire - another 2k+ PLN. Last year in august the transfer case bearings started howling - 6k PLN (about 130k kilometers). On January 6, the transfer case grenaded itself - 9k PLN. To sum up, ours is an unreliable piece of crap and made me want, I kid you not, a Toyota Prius.

I have one of these babies. I have the XS which is now 10 years old and still going strong. I bought it with very low km but it was already a few years old. It's a diesel and it has leather seats and Meridian audio. Despite the prmium image Land Rover goes for, they are generally stingy with features. When other carmakers put in MP3 capable players, they proudly put in their CD player. When others include digital speedo, they put in an analog one. Etc... Curiously, the Freelander 2 has a hidden antenna, so they do sometimes add a bit of random tech fruit.
I had the "doors won't lock" problem. The front door locks failed within a couple of months of each other, after about maybe 6 years of life. A typical issue, according to the LR specialist mechanic and the only really widespread problem with the FL2, others are mostly random.
I can just echo the advice on maintenance - especially for the diesel and especially if you often have short runs. Have I mentioned the importance of regular maintenance? :-) I have had the car serviced or at least looked over every 6 months or so, and I haven't had any serious problems so far. Dealer servicing is best avoided (I had bad experience) - find a good mechanic!
There was once an intermittent "Transmission failure. Traction reduced." error. An internet search led me to the dreaded "Haldex failure" which a few UK owners complained about. Luckily, it was solved with... drum roll... a battery replacement! The original battery lasted something like 6 years but it was getting weak. Apparently, when the voltage drops, some random errors can pop up which are not real. It happened to me again when I didn't drive the car much during COVID lockdown times and the battery was slowly discharging (the car still started OK, though). A quick charge topup fixed the issue and the problem hasn't come back since then. Now I tend to drive more so the battery is always charged.
I find the car practical and easy to live with. After 10 years, I still don't have the interior wear issues shown in the video but I always use a windscreen sunshade when it's very sunny. The AWD/traction control etc. works well and kept me out of trouble during overly spirited driving or unexpected road surface problems. Steering and shocks still feel good.
The white exterior is still pretty good. Some black surfaces changed their appearance a little bit but still OK. There was a facelift of the originallly released FL2 with improved looks (I have this latter one). Another update happened with the MY2013 with further cosmetic enhancements and I think they also added true keyless and electronic parking brake, among other things. My FL2 uses just over 10l/100km, in city driving. It does have a little turbo lag but not too bad and once it gets going, the engine pulls strong. Starting when the lights turn green, it's OK of the mark but once I hit about 50km/h, the other cars seem to drop back! :-) A small advantage of the older diesel engine is that I didn't get caught up in the Adblue shortage issue which affects the Disco Sport owners, for example. It eats hills for breakfast and easily handles mild offroad conditions but I never tried really rough stuff. Using Continental SUV tyres which are a good match.
At this rate and considering current car prices and availability, I will keep it for a few more years. It still doesn't look like an old car.

Agree get the cambelt and water pomp done much sooner than LR reckon did mine at 70k miles, is not that expensive. Never seen one with a roof lining coming away like yours. Finally the seat squabs are not leather. The bit your bum sits on is but not the squabs they are vinyl. They have a tendency to split and look really naff. I think cause is heavy drivers getting in on a cold winters day. The vinyl will be quite stiff and only softens up when the car gets warm.

Whereas we've seen multiple cars from Japanese and South Korean manufacturers miss multiple services, be driven to near abuse levels and not suffer from the same result. - AK

We are very fond of ours but it had one electrical problem it intermittently would not start that foxed Land Rover even sending down a mechanic from the HQ eventually it turned out that the wire which stops the engine starting if you don’t have your foot on the brake in an automatic was warn ! We have a manual so that wire does nothing in ours!

I've got the 2.2 se it's a 2014 I've got 23,000 miles I've had the rear dif oil problem that's a common fault and the turbo actuator go both I feel should have been a manufacturer recall but Land rover point blank said no so I've had to pay to get these fixed other than that it's a lovely car so I won't be selling it I just won't be using main dealers ever again for services or any maintenance.

Ok so want to do a bit of touring around oz. Some low level off-roading such as dirt tracks to campsites / beach camping. I’m purely looking at FL2 because of price. Much cheaper than a Pajero or Prato. Can. You fit a roof top tent on a fl2

2010 LR2 3.2V6, 160000 KMS. Running smoothly on the roads of UAE. Cracks on the dashboard, roof cloth trouble. spend around $1000 for repairs ( Smalls ones). The braking is not that great. Heavy and safe venhicle.

Having been in the motor trade for many years this vehicle is probably the least troublesome Land Rover, yes they have their issues but most are fairly easy and not to expensive to sort.
Problem areas seem to be rear diff bearings get noisy, Haldex units sometimes need a rebuild but often it’s only a fluid service and Haldex filter change, engine seems very good as it’s a Peugeot unit, door locks and electric windows can give problems..
IF I were to buy a Land Rover it would be this one, I’ve owned series Land Rovers an Defenders for forty years but now have a Hilux as Land Rover no longer sell “working” vehicles. 🇬🇧

I would buy a Hilux, but parking something that large where I live would be a bit of an issue. The FL2 is the perfect size for me. Big, but not too big.

This won't apply to Aus but corrosion resistance is poor and my experience in the UK is that a well used 2008 will have a lot of corrosion underneath. Otherwise power steering hose has a steel section exposed to the rh wheel arch and will rust through early. Slot - in ignition key inthe dash seems too complicated and likely to be prone to failure. Otherwise too early to comment.
