Land Rover's original MK1 model Freelander was a great case study in perseverance. The first cars were well styled but never that well built or even that great to drive. Fortunately the company acted quickly and developed the Freelander nameplate, giving it constant updates and infusions of cash. The second generation Freelander 2 was a whole lot better but it had a tough time keeping on top of a rapidly developing market. With a whole lot of new and very good market entrants, the baby Land Rover really had to look sharp.
It was first launched way back in 2006 and six years later, remained on sale with a replacement still three years away. Land Rover needed to give this car a last lease of life - and did so. Does buying one of these 'last-of-the-line' 2012-2015 Freelander 2 models on the used market makes sense? Or is this one best left alone?

Would you buy the Land Rover Freelander 2? Your style or nah?
Picked up a 2013 LR2 last summer. Was well maintained with only 80k miles on it. For a second vehicle. Love it. My daughter had a Toyota Rav4 pull in front of her. It got totaled and the LR2 only needed a new bumper. Great 4x4 without the frills.
My next daily driver
Got one and it is better than I thought it would be. On and off road.
Bought a 2014 td4 gs 3 weeks ago love it had a Freelander 1 this is a different level thank you for a very Informative video I needed the help as I'm still trying to find my way around it.
YES
Excellent vehicle. The only people who slag them off are those who never had one. There is no car that would replace mine. Had it for 13 years, 170k miles, never let me down, takes all I can throw at it. The only thing I’ve done is service it twice a year.
Manual or auto?
probably the best review on the FL2 ive ever watched. I am the proud owner of a 14 plate Metropolis and absolutely love it. Arguably a most underrated LR and the moment they got evrything just right about it...they stopped making them! Im sticking with my beauty
Wow, thank you!
All the “experts” will tell you not to buy one. But every owner I have spoken to love theirs, I have a 2013 sd4 Hse lux and have had no problems with it in 28000 miles. It currently over 100000 miles , the most comfortable car I have owned. Prince Phillip could afford any car and he had one.
Manual or automatic?

You listened to our pleas and uploaded the Freelander 2 video. Two thumbs up!
Of course!
Love my 2013 lr2 hse, 245,000 miles and still going strong!
Manual or auto?
Just purchased my first 'Landy'..a pristine 2014 LR2. After watching this review I'm confident I've made the right choice...
Glad to help!
Why does this video look like it was a production shot with a 3MP webcam when it was 2014?
I've had a 14 plate from new and 98,000 on the clock. Lovely car to drive, my wife loves driving it too. Had the intercooler pipe split which was replaced under warranty. Currently a couple of the door locks need sorting and the tailgate switch needs changing which I've got ready to change. I'd have certainly had another.
I've had a fl2 for 11 years ts on 206000 miles never let me down and still pulls like a train, problem is people buy them and can't afford to maintain them correctly
How many diffs?
Had one for eight years, never any problems, excellent in every way.
Best freelander 2 review till date , precise and informative
Appreciate that!
I drove FREELANDER 1, had to let it go 3 mnths ago Still Miss this car a lot! :)))
I’m on my second
Started with a brand new STD4 SX spec 2014
Changed it for a STD4 Metropolis spec ( higher than an HSE end of line run out 64 plate ) it was 6 months younger and had 20000 less miles on it
I love mine too , went for a Freelander again instead of a Disco Sport
had my Metropolis 15months and just so in love with the car. Ive had a few LR's but my 14plate is simply fantastic. A mini Rangerover but without the megacost to go with it!
I bought a 2014 100k mile sd-4 xs with lost service history! Recipe for disaster? Changed belts, water pump, oil in diff/haldex/auto gearbox and only had a split turbo pipe in 35000 miles. I strongly recommend the 6 speed zf auto and sd4 engine (suprisingly quick) - wonderful gearbox - you can barely feel it change gear. I really love mine...
When you drove past the qashqai the freelander looked a lot bigger that is because it is the freelander is midsize luxury suv the qashqai is basically a hatchback
12 plate SD4 Dynamic. Bought second hand with 80,000. EGR valve had to be replaced within 3 months, that apart I love it.
Unrivalled car review no one else comes close.
Just bought the fl2 xs,14 plate in manual, ten years land rover owner never had a problem.
What would be the average maintenance cost?
Thank you for a thorough and very informative review. Helped me confirm decide to buy it.
Glad we could help!
Shame he didn't drop the seats correctly. Gives a bad impression , looking like they don't fold flat.
Love mine. It's a 3.2 petrol HSE from 2007 and I've heavily modified it. Had it donkey's years and don't know what I'll change it to. But as long as it keeps giving me sterling service, then why change it ? 148,000 on the clock. I've owned countless Land Rovers over the years from Series vehicles to Discoverys and Defenders. But my Freelander 2 is by far the best . It does everything I want it to without compromise.
I love my 63 plate SD4 HSE.👍👍
Great!
Don't see many of them on the road these days, might be a decent second hand buy if you can get one with full Land Rover service history and not too many miles.
Don’t see many on the road.maybe you need to get more .their are thousands on the road you moron
Don't see many of them on the road?
They're everywhere!
@@alistairclement4239Have to agree, just walked down our village High Street and there were 16 Landrovers, half were Freelander 2, the rest a mix of Defenders and Discoverys. Bad news for Landrover is that these are all discontinued models, no one is forking out for increasingly expensive and complex new ones. The local Landy specialist is booked solid keeping all our cherished vehicles on the road.
I like mine 2003 with my 2.5 liter V-6 I drive mine in Arizona it just gets Hot in summer.
hello. im torn between a 2014 Freelander 2 vs 2013 Touareg 3.6, which one has better reliability? thanks
Awesome review! It seems the bad reputation is very unfair in the case of this car!
thank you!
My favorite car
160k trouble free miles, best car ever owned!
Which is best between manual or automatic transmission?
Is this the LR2 in the US???
Yes
Nice job❤️
Thanks! What would you like to see next?

The thing I hate about the updated Fl 2 is that they removed the rear window that opened separately from the door, that's such an underrated useful feature
