Have had the Freelander 2 for almost 4 years now. It’s a great SUV for gravel / dirt roads and also great for cruising long distances on tarmac. The terrain response system is truly an ingenious system and does great in all off-road situations. Finally I just hate the new trend towards SUV’s becoming more “curvy / soft” and hence for me this Freelander is the last of the “boxy dinosaurs”....but hey I love dinosaurs.

I have just gettin my 1st freelander. 2014 sd4 dynamic. What can i say. Absolutely awesome car!!! Wasnt 100% about getting an automatic but pleased i did. Dont think i will go back to manual now. My only gripe is that they dont make them any more so this will probably be my 1st and last. The discovery sports which have replaced them dont look as good in my opinion. So enjoy your freelanders guys and look after them.
I've had a fl2 for 12 years, now on 206000,only problem was rear diff needed changing, other than normal wear/tear it's never let me down, my neighbour has a 2019 ranger over sport, nothing but trouble.
@@youtuberperson7947 I had it for about six months didn't have any issues. Just sold it because I got a different car.. it was a really nice car though, awesome sound system too
Bought a manual 57 plate freelander 2 on saturday there. And managed 39mpg on a 95 mile run home with it doing 60-70mph. Its got some go about it for sure
I’ve loved the freelander 2 for a long time but every time I’ve looked at one the bad reliability comments has put me off. Now looking again but have also looked at the Lexus rx300 or rx400h. Most people have said the Lexus IS far superior to the freelander, cheaper, better interior and better reliability and despite everyone saying that I still just love the boxy purposefulness of the freelander. Is the freelander going to become an endless money pit with turbo issues, leak issues, differential problems or have others been really unlucky? I won’t be towing anything or going off-road I just want a comfortable high up car I can sit family adults comfortably in the back and nice space for my dog in the boot
Bought only my Freelander 2 a year ago today just had its MOT straight through lovely car only problem is my wife keeps stealing it leave me with her Mini
What a motor, had one for a year now, the most reliable LandRover you can buy, never had a problem, but you have to keep on top of the service schedule
Still on my 2004 FL swapped engine for a 135 MGF K-series, so now have better around performance with no extra fuel costs. Great working car, lite enough not to get stuck on the marshes yet good ground clearance and capabilities to be a viable choice over a defender or Toyota. Looking to change for a disco 3 or FL 2 (post 2011) hence looking for advice. Thanks
Yes Hi I happen to have a 03 free lander I guess the first one my Dad had it in the garage after he past away I got it doesn't have all the electronics the second one has but I like it it's got a kind of charisma though it needs a new 🎨 paint it's like a British racing Green very different and inside like a black canvas.
Henry actually has the same Freelander now (the first generation one, like yours) - if you check out some of our newer videos you'll see it! We'll do a full review of it soon.
@@Keepingitrespectfulmostly. i absolutely love it so far it's a fantastic thing to drive, planning off road adventures in the future too, it'd be a shame not to
I'm on my second FL2 which is an SD4 HSE. Fantastic car and I agree with all that Auto Animals say.....except that my 2013MY has a newer interior arrangement. In fact, my wife has bought an SD4 HSE too.
The 2013 MY onward models do indeed have a nicer and more modern dashboard / facia set up with more up to date features such as BT streaming and USB socket etc. Nice cars Thurston, enjoy!
There's a lot of Volvo influence in the interior, and that's because this was developed when LR and Volvo were under Ford ownership. Hence the clusters of buttons in the center.
Dave - The best thing is probably to sit in one and try it to be sure, but we have had drivers up to 6ft 3" driving the one we tested and it was fine with loads of leg and head room. The 2007 - 2014 range did not change with the shape of the seating or range of adjustments.
The TD4 has the gen3 haldex rated at 500Nm torque with a safety factor of 50Nm. Later models use the gen4 @1500Nm which allows higher power mappings (combined with the right gearbox) which in turn could improve economy. There is also a school of thought that the manual gearshift delivers better fuel economy. The dash is known to crack. The egr cooler might be of the factory fitted design which could fail (plenty white smoke [steam] from exhaust - workshop will check for blown head gasket before telling u about a blown egr cooler). Pro: the ECM is less fussy than later models. If you find a 2.2 TD4 with a beige trim then it might be worthwhie considering.
Dave@ AA They are automatic and work when the headlamps are on, washing them every 5 times from memory when the screen is washed. They do each headlamp in turn so as to avoid both lamps being dimmed at the same time by the jet wash.
I've never drove a Land Rover. But in the roundabout did it felt like loosing some grip or rolling over? Some 4x4 feel like rolling over in those situations.
Hugo, it does roll a bit on its longer travel suspension and ride height compared to a conventional car but its not as bad as some SUV's. It is not really wallowy and despite rolling round corners a bit seems to grip quite well. It is not as 'sporty' feeling as a Mazda CX5 for example if an SUV can ever be called that. It never felt like it was going to fall over though. Hope this helps.
I have a 2009 TD4e model and it surprised me in how well it tracks around corners. They ride really nice and comfortably but seem to "hang on" in the corners. My guess is that its ESC is really good at keeping things under control when you throw it into a corner perhaps a bit quicker than you should have.
Karim - Whilst this is Land Rovers most reliable model it still has some complex hardware and electronics. The best advice we can give is provided you acknowledge it is a 9 year old car that may have the same age related issues any 9 year old car has then go for it. Just make sure you check it out thoroughly or get someone who knows the model well to do it for you. A well specified, nice condition car is a very pleasant and capable vehicle to own. An HSE model of this vintage wil have all the toys you would need probably with only the media side of things letting it down to its age. Let us know how you get on!
Auto Animals no LR 2, I'm not going to deny myself anymore and getting an LR 3 (-: do you absolutely need to use Pentium gas? (here in Canada gas prices are sky high) suggestion if I may: you seem like a very likable and personable guy so longer videos with more information would be welcomed.. thanks again,
On the LR3 (Discovery 3 in Europe), the locking rear differential is a sought after extra for enthusiasts and make can a real difference if the vehicle is to be pushed hard off road. However, for general use of the vehicle it's not something we feel is worth seeking out, unless you plan on rock crawling and being axle deep in mud. There will be many more models without this optional extra so if a good used example of an LR3 becomes available, there would be little point in passing up on it if it does not have a locking rear differential. The vehicle is still incredibly capable without it. If however, you decided later down the line you wanted one, it can usually be retro fitted.
Apart from my praise for the autos. I have read on landrover forums that the sd4s can have an intermittent problem of when trying to pull away the car doesnt move for about 2-3 seconds. Even when accelerator is pressed. Can anyone shed any light on this? Nice video by the way.
Yes it's a pain especially at roundabouts when waiting for a gap in traffic 2or3 second delay. But I love my freelander so I wait for a bigger gap and live with it.
Great video. Any ideas on what we should specifically check for or focus on when doing a used car pre-inspection of a 2007 model? I would like make sure that the car will last us for awhile.
Dave - Thank you!. Like most cars, the FL2 has a few common problem areas to look at, but its worth noting its been Land Rovers most reliable model right from manufacture, and on the whole a looked after example is a pleasure to own. At 2007 the car will be 10 years old so check that the big 150k / 10 year service has been done which inc.cam belt and water pump etc. Steering pump reservoir filters can get clogged causing rack issues if left, rear diff bearing can fail early, Autos seem pretty reliable, earlier cars do not have DPF's. The best thing is get a potential purchase checked out by someone who knows the cars and also go and register here and join in the conversations, its a great place for everything Freelander 2 related www.freel2.com/forum/index.php
Dave @ AutoAnimals - I think the petrol engine has less to go wrong than the diesel, its an inline 6 if its a UK / European export model and I believe chain driven. Its a Volvo unit designated Si6 (short inline 6) but seems basically sound. Fairly rare in the UK but there are some early ones around still.
Freelander 2, TD4 auto, 2008, 123000km. The egr cooler failed, replaced but LR have altered the engineering of the factory fitted. Intercooler split, replaced. Starter motor is heavy duty, needed to be refurbished. Has the gen3 haldex (500Nm), later models got the gen4(1500Nm), bought bits 'n bobs to service the haldex, tbd. Roof lining can come adrift. Dashboard is known to crack. Bezel plastic around light&12v sockets disintegrate. The car can come with either catalyst or dpf. Removed catalyst, put in freeflow exhaust and an egr cooler bypass hose (must presuure test egr before connecting). Economy = 7-9.5 l/100km. If you are not prepared to do the labour yourself then it'll be costly to deal with these maintenance issues.
