  • Another day of greenlaning with members of the FL2ORG, what fun we had splashing about on salisbury plain! - Im really privileged to have this incredible area right on my doorstep and I love sharing it with other keen Freelander 2 owners on these 'free to join' group events that I run! Following lots of requests for 'long format' videos rather than short montages I have kept this video a little more lengthy, be sure to let me know what you think!
    Join us in the group over on Facebook:

    If I ever get myself sorted with a FL2 (currently considering and looking) I will come a meet. Totally new to 4x4 and off road so a lot to learn.

      On most gentle lanes even road tyres will do. A basic set of All Terrains will see you through on most lanes though if you plan to do alot of offroad orientated bits. We have a meet coming up near Bristol airport next month, a good opertunity to learn more about the FL2 while on a closed course designed to teach the fundamentals. 👍

    Hiya, I live next to Sailsbury Plain and am looking at a freelander 2. Do you guys have any issues with rear diffs and if you do how much are they to get done? Great video BTW👍

    • @JoelSelfOutdoorInstructor
      @JoelSelfOutdoorInstructor  2 года назад +1

      Hi @FullAddo the FL2 is well worth considering, in standard form they are such comfortable capable vehicles and you'd be joining the market just as the idea of modifying them more heavily is coming into play so that only improves their abilities further!
      Rear diffs can be an issue, recon units are available from a company called Bell Engineering. I've heard of people sourcing rear diffs in the range of £400-£600 depending on supplier and whether its recon or just from a breaker in original condition. Though it is a known issue on the FL2 (from memory its some bearing thats aren't upto scratch?!) I dont hear much about it these days, but I guess folks are still having issues?! Mine is on 165,000 miles and has original diffs, seemingly in great working order - no complaints or noise from mine, even with a lot of abuse offroad and with massively oversized tyres.... Something to keep an ear out for on a test drive though 👍
      You'd be very welcome to join us in the 'Freelander 2 OffRoad Group (FL2ORG)' on Facebook if you're keen to learn more about the FL2 😁👍🚜

    • @JoelSelfOutdoorInstructor
      @JoelSelfOutdoorInstructor  2 года назад +1

      Interactions with water are the FL2's least strong point... on the whole they are excellent but wading is something only to be taken on with serious consideration. The reasons for this are three-fold.
      1. Sensors / low level electrics are a bit of a pain on the FL2, though they are cheap to rectify if they start falling they could cause you to need recovery... personally I carry spares of a few common sensors that like to fail, but Im happy spinning spanners in the middle of nowhere where as some folks would find that a bit daunting. (Understandably so!) The Crankshaft Position Sensor doesn't like motorway spray on a wet day let alone cold muddy water on the lanes!
      2. Weight... the FL2 just dosent weigh all that much... go wading too deep and they'll float more easily than most traditional 4x4's that sink to the bottom and maintain traction... that being said this is an issue I've never experienced myself despite being in some incredibly deep water in mine (depth to the height of the bottom of the windscreen)!
      3. Air intake, now this has potentially just been solved by the team at MuddyMods in the last few days because they've brought out a snorkle (have already fitted it to my FL2 and its ace!!). But ordinarily the air intake is a bit pants, not the position itself (left wing) but the ducting and airbox are far from watertight and as such water ingress to the filter housing is common... and thats one stop away from being water and bits of filter in the engine which would really put a downer on your day, a few folks have drowned their FL2's due to the airbox missing the one way valve in its base (this should stop water entering but allow water to drain), if missing you have a hole striaght into the air box the size of a UK 50pence piece.
      But that all sounds like doom and gloom, by an auto FL2 and whether you're on the road or off you wont go far wrong. A couple choice mods and you'll not only keep up with the likes of discos and defenders, you might even start out performing them at times! 😉
