- A long form video documenting the first time a convoy of Land Rover Freelander 2's has taken on and complete the Machynlleth Horse Shoe (aka "The Bastard") in North wales. This trip was the brain child of All Terrain UK Ambassador Adam Locker who invited myself and a select few from the 'Freelander 2 OffRoad Group' to join in with this epic adventure! It was seriously good fun to get out laning with these guys and to tick off this well known but hard going trail. In reality, as you'll see the going was not as hard as expected but we did enjoy the few challenges the lane threw our way and I do look forward to repeating it again in the near future.

Thoroughly enjoyed watching this, could quite easily have watched another half hour of it. Nice to see the FL2's showing what they can do. Makes me want to go and jump in my FL1 and take it for a spin.
Ive owned landys from S11 to defenders and Discos and RR classics plus a Toyota and a Niva...I was so impressed by the FL2s..Have to say the guy in the red one is a proper jockey 😊😊😊

Great footage, MF943 here, i take it you all have got fuel tank guards something on my wish list. Too all those that don't know the FL2 like its predecessor doesn't have low box. Great driving skills chaps, well done.

brilliant watch have been a jimny man last 15 yrs just sold my last jimny at 70yrs old a bit tight kipping in one thought my laning days were over guess what i am getting looks like std fl2 is ok with at tyres and underbody protection glad i kept my waffle boards great content cheers

Bought a used 2009 Freelander 2 2.2 Diesel automatic. Serious shudder when I hit 60 kilometres an hour. Wheel balancing or more serious issue? Otherwise, body, interior and wheels in superb condition.
@@makermarx dangerous. That will be the rear diff. Will throw you off the road upside down and kill you. Get it sorted in a garage ASap! I just bought one, so have researched loads prior.

100% worth doing! Great trip and a very short lane (3.3miles) so its easy to just take your time and enjoy it. Happy to go again if you want someone to go with!

I REALLY want to give this a go. I bought a FL2 a month ago that has a 40/50 lift kit and All Terrain tyres on. I just need some underbody protection!

Im absolutely stunned! Freelanders doing the bastard! I tell you one thing, claims the FL2 was the most heavy duty "soft roader" ever made are all true. I wonder if a Range Rover Ejoke or a Discovery Spoof would make it through bastard like the freelanders did?
I think the Evoke and sport are just rebodied FL2's.
Disco sport is basically a freelander 3. Not sure on the evoque

Question: On the penultimate obstacle, starting around the 23min mark, would you not have had the ground clearance to come at it ok the right hand side ?
From the video it looks like you could put your right wheels parallel to the right side, and have it lean to the right ? and avoid so much of the tipping onto 3 wheels ?

@joel serious question from a fl2 owner, at the 7min ish mark on the first obstacle why does the 4x4 system not stop the front from spinning and put more power to the rear wheels to help lift the car up the step?
Same question from me. Too much uncontrollable (?) front-left wheel spin. On all the FL2's in the video. Why no braking on that wheel, to transfer power to the wheel on the other side? Isn' t there no EDL on the front? That would also stop a wheel spinning in the rear axle (was it?). I have also seen this on other FL2 video's.
I think they had terrain response in auto. Allows quite a lot of wheel spin.
I think someone in the video said diagonally opposing wheels lost traction. Which equals no progress unless you have a diff locker.
Iv just purchased a freelander 2 hse standard no mods. Is their a fb group best to join or a owners club so I could start to do the odd green lane?

Freelander 1 up to 2006, is now a British Motor Museum Heritage Vehicle. I kept my TD4 HSE Facelift Auto 2505 kg mvw 2000kg towing 200,000 miles. Going up in price.
What does 'touring setup' mean with regards the red Freelander?
David, James - the owner, regards it as such. Hes tailored it more for long diatance driving and touring with additional battery setups, awnings, a roof rack and the like. As much geared towards overlanding and crosscountry travel as we really get a chance to do in the UK. This also means he's opted for the likes of an all terrain tyre rather than muds, on account of fuel and road noise. All considerations one would make when the reality of it is their vehicle will do a lot of road miles between the offroad terrain. 👍

It’s just the turbo chattering as it’s gone from being heavily loaded under boost to not loaded at all, perfectly normal and nothing to worry about.

Hi Joel, are the Freelander 1 td4's any good off road?
Hi @TheHumbleFatMan they are yes, though the FL2 with the same engine is a far better refined version (basically non-comparible really despite being from the same 'line').

In the FL1 momentum is key and you'll need a more dynamic driving style to get you through harder terrain. The FL2 has no low box still but the auto's crawl beautifully allowing you to tackle terrain under a great amount of control and the 'terrain response system' means you wont need that momentum and dynamic approach.
As slow as possible and as fast as nessacery - apply that idea to either vehicle and they'll take you a long way and into some serious terrain!

There's a permanent live in the fusebox in the passenger footwell (assuming RHD)
It's for the interior lighting. I ran mine from there up the door seal, through the window frame (behind the airbag for obvious reasons) and through the seal between the headliner and windscreen.
There's a very useful bolt in the door for the earth.

Offroad specifically, no I don't believe there to be any different benifits either way. 👍
Is this the hardest track you've done in the UK? Where is this?
Hi @Easy4x4 this track has a reputation for being hard going and causing damage to lots of vehicles.... before we went it sounded like it was going to be incredibly hard going.
In reality it is technical, yes, but its so short and the line choices so obvious that I dont know that I'd personally label it the 'hardest', no. If this level of technicality was sustained for miles and miles of lane then yes it would be much more up there. Great lane through, tucked away in North Wales, it was a fun drive and I look forward to driving it again, I'm just not convinced it lived up to the hype. 👍

Hello friends, I have a little problem. I have a Freelander 1 TD4 with BMW and I have a horrible sound in the area of the auxiliary belt and its tensioner. My surprise is that there is no place to work on the auxiliary belt and remove its tensioner.
Could someone tell me if there is any trick or procedure that could help me so that I do not have to remove the engine. We've been thinking about how to do it for days. Thank you very much

Hola amigos tengo un problemilla tengo un freelander 1 TD4 con BMW y tengo un sonido horrible en la zona de la correa auxiliar y su tensor. Mi sorpresa es que no hay sitio ninguno para poder trabajar en la correa auxiliar y sacar su tensor.
Alguien me podría indicar si hay algún truco o algún proceder que me pudieras ayudar para no tener que sacar el motor. llevamos días dándole vueltas como hacerlo .. muchas gracias

Try going the other way
If you’d like to try something harder for the FL2, shoot me a message. I could get some off road sections setup if you wanted to come and try them out.
Best offroad freelander video I've ever seen! It was really fun to watch 👍 your FL setup granted you better angles and ground clearance. The adventage for the nissan was the rear solid axle that offers better articulation.

good car but the suspension sucks!! must change cv after 90000 to 100.000, or you are in trouble!!! if you do 4wd off-road, before it
