We got a slight dusting of snow here in the No GA mountains. It was so cold-lows below 10 degrees and highs in the upper20s/low 30s. To help stay warm and cozy I made a big pot of venison stew and baked a loaf of bread (in the bread machine)
My grands love it when I turn our kitchen table into a fort for them. They will play in it for hours.

Midwest has the best of all seasons! Frozen pipes here can break and flood closets, house, and homes so we must keep the heat inside no less than 68. I feel cold around 72. Can certainly understand not using space heaters with small children. Contractors insulate our pipes here -there may be new ways of doing that now-especially if pipes are near outside walls. Very sympathetic to the toilet flushing. Wonder if hot water might help?
The South sure seems to be getting more cold weather than I remember and more tornadoes, too.
As always love your creativity. Was hoping you might have an opportunity to draw. Tent was a great mom win!!

Super cosy and relaxing video today - thank you for sharing it with us! By way of thanks, I have a really easy and delicious butternut soup recipe for you, from my family here in Scotland!
Cut a butternut squash in half lengthways and scrape out the seeds with a spoon. Dot with butter and place cut side up in a baking tray in a medium-hot oven for, say, 45 minutes or so - the squash should be soft and browned.
While the squash is roasting, peel and cut up a couple of large potatoes (this recipe is super forgiving, just use whatever you have!) and put on to boil in a pot of chicken or vegetable stock until tender.
When the squash is out of the oven and cooled enough, remove the skin and cut the flesh into chunks. Add to the pot of cooked potatoes and stock, and blend with a stick blender until smooth, or transfer to your Vitamix to blitz, then return back to the pan.
Add some cream to the soup and gently heat through before tasting for seasoning, adding salt and black pepper if desired, and serving - it’s great with roasted seeds or a sprinkle of shredded cheese on top!
I often add a good sprinkle of ginger or nutmeg to the stock before cooking the potatoes, but I’ve been known to add garlic too. You can also add any other root vegetables you have lying around to the stock to cook with the potatoes - I’ve used carrots and parsnips before, and it was still great. It’s very simple but so warming and delicious, perfect for snow days. I hope you give it a try and let me know if you enjoy it as much as we do!

When I was a Nanny during snow days, we would always have "Sock Fights" where the kiddos and I would find any stray pieces of laundry and try to throw them into laundry baskets. I even had a playlist of orchestral music which made the entire day even more epic, one snow storm in particular I had the Lord of the Rings Return of the King soundtrack playing and it made laundry so so so much fun! Hi Channa, life has been crazy for me. I miss the snow ❄️ and cold.We are at 0* elevation here… no snow, just rain. Have two big fires going, one in the master bedroom and one in the great room. When we lived in Pennsylvania, we had a shut off valve in the basement, when it would get that cold we would keep water in the jacuzzi, a big bucket and use that for flushing , if need be. Having the shut off valve was handy.
Be careful in the ice, i slipped on black ice exactly 26 years ago tonight. Broke my tib, fib, ankle, and foot. We are from California, were transferred to Pennsylvania, I had no clue about black ice. I’m still suffering, I have CRPS.
As for soup, we love Julia Childs French Onion 🧅 Soup, and Italian Wedding Soup. We are Italian and only make that on holidays…no rule just because. Another thing, I just finished a great book, it would be more for you, unless your oldest reads at adult level. “The Radium Girls “ by Kate Moore non fiction, ***** ( five stars) it was so good I listened to it on audio books ( scribed now called Everand) first month is free, after that it’s 11.99 a month. I don’t sleep well , I put my earbuds in and listen for a few hours. I know you don’t have a lot of time to read like I do, you are busy with kids. I am a retired RN, when my leg is acting up , I lay by the fire and read.Enjoy your soup. Do you have a basement? I know you said your husband is a contractor, mine is an engineer, he put the shut off valve in the basement when we lived in Pennsylvania.
When we make chicken soup, we put the chicken in cooking gauze so no little bones 🦴 get away when we are pulling meat off of bones. Just a hint. We don’t use bouillon either.Too much salt.🧂No basements here, but we do have a three car garage, just one car. Hubby works from home, we have a joke: I drive within our zip code.lol That’s me in the little picture, we drive a Tesla…no gas! We have a charger in our garage. I can see with all your kids you need a. “ moms” car. I used to have an Explorer. Our kids were here for Christmas, they are YIKES!!! , going to be 44 on Valentine’s Day, 41 on July 4 and DIL 46 on 9-11. I was a young mom for our first, and second , considered an elderly mom for our third. She is 37.,I don’t wish to speak about her, she ran away from home after graduation , never to be seen again. We know where she is, it’s hard , but it was her choice to join a religious cult and leave a good family. Our attorney got a private investigator to find her and keep tabs on her. We own several rental properties and found out the hard way some people don’t respect your property nor pay rent. I’m babbling, so sorry. Maybe she will see this…. Like one in a zillion chances, but you never know. ( That is why we have an attorney on retainer, when tenants get a registered letter from the man with JD after his name they know we are serious.) I manage 4 properties, the one that was our custom home in Pennsylvania, we turned over to a property management company. I can’t take care of a house 3000 mikes from here, plus, we lived in it 23 years, I loved that house. BTW , I got my pass through door in the hallway, I think you have one and just 2 weeks agony, got the “ pantry”:door. Next is laundry door. Our houses are similar in color and style, except I have a farm house sink, all one piece. My neighbor gave her 5 year old a bath in it when they lost their hot water tank. It broke. He is autistic and now thinks “Miss Fran” has the best sink he’s ever seen. lol 💜❄️✌🏻💐 I’ve missed not watching you.Even with all my leg pain, I took care of a neighbor’s husband, he was on hospice for only 8 weeks, but I’m not used to working anymore. As you know, Hospice nursing is not the same as ER nursing. I could sit and get up to take care of him. I cooked for her, and it gave her respite time to run errands. RIP Louis.

I'm from Pennsylvania, and according to our winters, that would definitely be classified as snow. There are so many textures of snow, sometimes slushy, sometimes heavy and kind of wet (we call it a bushbender - great for making snowmen) and then sometimes gritty like you have now. Who would think that Texas is having the same kind of weather that we Pennsylvanians are having!! Have fun in it!🥰

Many thanks for your latest update! What a shame that your toilets and washing machine froze for a time in the cold weather. The snow I told you about last week did arrive after which it rained and then froze so we had icy roads and pavements for a few days. Just like you, I do not go out anywhere when it’s like that! Anyway it’s all gone now thank goodness, but it’s been replaced by very heavy winds and lots of weather warnings for the next few days. Your fort looked magical ! What a brilliant idea! I noticed you had a quilt in there, any chance of a video (when you can find the time!) on quilts that you have made?! I’ve been a hand quilter for years now, so love seeing other people’s quilts. Also love your table cloth, it looks like the William Morris strawberry thief pattern? one of my favourites! Stay warm and safe. 💜

So glad you enjoyed! The tablecloth is just an extra wide quilting cloth I got and hemmed to fit the table. Most of the quilts that you see are made by family members, not by me. I really enjoy quilting, but it's silly for me to make more quilts when the kids already have so many.

I lived in NJ until I was in my 50's. I forgot all about leaving the water dripping and frozen pipes. I have been living in South Florida for about 15 years and don't miss the bitter cold and everything that comes with it at all. Now that I am thinking about it, I used to put a small electric space heater in the basement next to where the main water pipe came into the house. Keeping that area warm seemed to help avoid the frozen pipes.

The winds are at/ have been at 100mph. I expected to lose part of our fence, but it's still standing. My grandsons' therapy dog (Ralph) has been barking at their front door regularly, not understanding the wind is rattling the door knocker. On the seventh eruption of him barking Eloise resorted to taping the knocker and letterbox down! 🐶😂🌪 We use lagging (pool noodles cut to size) on our outdoor pipes.
