Its our first day of homeschool for the year and it is a super casual first day of school for our Orthodox Jewish Homeschooling family. Come along as I chat about how I am structuring our days, and how we will start our homeschool year! I also share a short grocery haul and prepare some meals. And we have a couple outings as well to the vet with our dog Bella, and to the library. Such a fun first day of school with our family! I had to rewind the Thrive market, I thought the snack you were holing said love Pork. I was like what that can't be right.
At 60 years old and childless, school supply time always brings back fond memories of my mom. Even into college, mom always bought school supplies for me.
Beatrix Potter's books are a delight, but she was also a fascinating person in her own right - maybe you could look at her life in homeschool :) She was a writer, an artist, but also a business woman, farmer, and conservationist.
Especially a conservationist, protecting the Lake District in England. She was a very interesting person, and with such artistic talent.
I love how you expose Baby Firefly to the library at a young age! You are making the library a familiar place to him!

Your reading time reminds me of something my kids' school did. It was a time called DEAR (Drop Everything And Read), where the entire school, K-12, faculty, staff, and admin, all sat and read a book of their own choice. Even parents who might have been visiting! It was lovely.

I think the homeschool mom with any kids under 5 always kind of has the mantra “oh yeah, we’re doing that thing” 🤣

Texas summers are so hot that kids don't usually play outside anyway so we do year round. But getting everyone else to understand that is a chore. Thanks for explaining your scheduling. Inspired me to reevaluate ours.

I was an elementary school librarian for five years and then taught elementary school for 19 years, and I have to tell you that you got excellent books! I had all of these in my library and love them all! I love the way you have scheduled your days!

I laughed out loud when you said you were such a sucker for a Library sale. Me too! I always look and I also look through the Little Free Street Library boxes we have in our town. I simply cannot resist and usually end up with a gem or like you, something I must 'rescue' and pass on. You got a super bargain on the Beatrix Potter books as I recently paid $16 AUS for The Tailor of Gloucester hardback which I had never read. Iris and I loved the tale of the sewing mice.
The library sales really are the absolute best! We just found a few gems in our local little free library as well!

We started a couple weeks ago. I’m now down to homeschooling 1 full time and the other whose special needs while he graduated he still slowly works on math, English and handwriting

We've always tried to do a year round school calendar since we started homeschooling 12 years ago. My children and I do better on a consistent schedule. Plus we can have a built in number of "free days" to use for illness and fun days.

Shalom Chana. We do ‘year round’ school too. I take off the whole month of August because here in WA it is our few weeks of summer. We enjoy that time then we start back. The month off allows me to declutter the house, school supplies, etc. we mostly do a 4 day week school schedule my middle and high school students may have work on Friday but I like to take Friday off to prep for Shabbat. My elementary kids help prep and clean. It works for us. It’s predictable and we don’t have months off in the summer which isn’t always a great thing IMO.

Happy First Day of School! In Canada we always start school on the day after Labour Day in September. So right now everyone is doing their back to school shopping. Chana, I suspect we have something in common - I love a good wander around and shop at an office supply store.

Today is our first day of official kindergarten for my daughter and I’m trying to take a page out of your laid back book! 😆
The morning started with a trip to the creek because we are getting wet weather from the hurricane. We then had to take a bath which was of course unexpected so we are improving but so far so good!

I always love the excitement over new school supplies. :-) We started our new hs year yesterday and took it very slow as we are in the middle of a terrible heat wave without air condition. I love your structured plan for the day, Over the summer break I have been working on one for the kids and myself as well. It does make my life so much easier, especially with a newborn. Great score in the Library books. I’m jelly! I remember once on a rainy day, I read The Trumpet of the Swan to my children in one sitting only taking a lunch break. I just recalled this memory to our son and he said his favorite memories of family time is of our reading together. Needless to say, he is a voracious reader and likes to sit and reflect on what he’s read.

My daughter is special needs teacher and a color guard coach for the band. The band has been practicing since last week of July. And her class has been in school for a week and half. She misses her free schedule of summer.
I remember when my kids were younger, I used to get up at 4am, got so much done and so much "me" time, it was wonderful.

I loved your kids responses to the new school supplies. I always loved buying school supplies when my kids were little. I still love buying school supplies, now I just call them office supplies. 😂 I think I'll see who is collecting school supplies for kids who might need them and enjoy the ritual.
BTW, I love the books you bought from the sale, I'm such a Beatrix Potter fan, and LOVE even more that you bought books to share in little libraries for other people to share in the magic of reading.

Hi Chana! Love the idea of a reading party! In my primary school we had library time every week and it was my favorite class! I got to pick the books I wanted to read and we were allowed 2 books a week. I loved the start of a new school year too! The new school supplies, new textbooks, new classmates and renewing friendships, really something to look forward to! As always a pleasure to watch and learn....

I love your channel. I like watching your life. I use to work on the nuro floor in a hospital. There was a family that made a big impact on me. They had rules for things that were hard to deal with but they were willing to help us understand what they needed. One was light switches and food. It was hard to deal with that but I was so thankful that they were willing to share with us there (rules). We could not do everything they needed but we tried to do it. Thank you for sharing your life with us. Even a little of it.

Our kids start school Aug 22. I really like your schedule chart! I think it’s a great idea to have a time slot for appointments. As stay at home moms, sometimes we feel like we are available all day. Farfalle is pronounced as three syllables: far-FAL-leh. Italian for butterflies. ;)

@@jaroffireflies You're welcome. In general, by the way, Italian is completely phonetic, in that every letter, especially the vowels, gets pronounced fully. There are some letter combos that have specific sounds, like SCH sounding like in "school," but by and large everything is pronounced as written.
