It’s actually a very well written and comprehensive book ruclips.net/user/postUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 . I wanted to pair this with an updated book on local codes to start planning a post-retirement dream shop. I think I have just about everything I need between the two. The extra plans available for purchase towards the end are priced almost as much as full home plans, not little sheds however.
For a small cabin a simple shed roof works well. For a larger one, the tall side and short side have to differ by too much to get the water to run off OK. In that case you switch to a peaked roof of some type.
If you're getting up to a point of worrying about water running off the roof you gone past the point where you had a tiny cabin I mean 10×12 is small but still doable for most people
Dude, you are literally the Bob Ross of the cabin building world, so relaxing watching you build these, bravo 👏
Lol , I was trying to think of who he reminded me of , spot on.

Agreed. Nailed it.
My thoughts exactly!

I love the way to you talk "to" us, like friends chatting, rather than "at" us, like a lecture. That's how a lot of videos of this type seem to be.
I totally agree & enjoy that "talking to a friend" style.
I've built many things and a two-person crew is more than twice as fast as a one person crew. When you were putting on the roof tin, Brook was hauling and handing it up. Saving those up and downs is huge. In addition, another person to grab dropped items, remember things you'll forget, hold up the end of a long piece (instead of building a jig to do it), all makes for a lot more efficiency. You two work really well together and that's a joy.
I may only be a highschool student, but this makes me want to go out and find property to live like this.
Jocob Liao- DO IT! I always said stuff like that when I was your age and I regret not taking action. So make a plan and do what you really want to !!! (yes you will have to wait until you can actually buy some property!)
“find property” - so, some bad news about that…
DO IT, if you find a place. Look into cob homes as well. Now is the time, because what the future has in store is not a future most will want a part of. Go off grid. Become self sustainable. Trust in god in everything you do.
I'll help you find the land. :D
I first got the itch for this life when I was about 18/19 and the older I get the more I fall in love with this style of living. There’s never a boring moment, there’s always something to do, the work feels meaningful and gives me purpose so it is always so worth it. Bushradical said something in the part 1 video that I’ll paraphrase: “humans are meant to build their own house, it’s in our DNA”. I’ll take it a step further and say humans are meant to live in nature and use their labor for growing food, woodworking, welding, raising animals, etc. and not to be stuck behind a desk in front of a screen. A simple life and living in harmony with nature is the best/healthiest way to live for most people-basically the exact opposite of what our society and mass media leads you to believe you need for peace and happiness.
That trick with the hammer to bend the mild steel bracket was genius
Yea ama have to learn that one.
@@jackforhome823 I just did.
No kidding. Simple tools, smart guy.
That's EXACTLY what I was thinking!
@@MrsCasa yea that's gonna come in handy some day
Here in Finland we never put just one layer of windows but two. The space between the windows works as an insulation. In old houses the inner window is often removable so during summer time it helps to keep the house bit cooler.
we do too but they used used glass. It seems foolish not to put in another piece of glass in an area that obviously will get cold.
You can get insulated glass that has two quarter-inch panes with a half-inch air space. They work just as well.
Yes, you would get condensation with a single pane.
No you dont
Yes. Recently double glazed my house - made an amazing difference
I just built my first 10x12 cabin. It is our kitchen. I'm building 2 smaller single pitch roof cabins for living areas. I didn't build exactly what you did but I have watched these 2 build videos a lot of times for ideas and "how you done it" along with the well and a few others. I am almost done building up my first off grid homestead and ready to save money to move to our land in the mountains that we been wanting. Great videos :)
I don't know what it is about Dave's voice, but it's so soothing. He could read me a bedtime story any night.
That might be a little scary having Dave sitting next to your bedside.😆
I was just thinking that same thing lol like the bushes baked beans commercial
I like his voice too. Reminds me of my first love. I love how the two of you work together. My husband and I working together is a show called This F%$&ing House. 😂. Remember the old Disney wild life shows. He sounds like the narrator of that.
I so agree I just love listening to him.
Bryce Matheson ditto👍😆...
I've built 49 tiny houses for homeless veterans. I love seeing stuff like this! Can't wait for the final product!
I'd like to thank you for building homes for homeless vets. I can't thank of a more worthy group of people.

Thank you for doing that.
@@billinhouston3291 Thanks, I'm not done :)
Kudos for helping our beloved veterans.
They have earned what they get!
Another great video!
Just remember that "easy" is after he's spent 20 years in construction. If you're a beginner you'll be making mistakes while you learn, so go easy on yourself.
When joining stovepipe, want the top pipe's tail inside the lower pipe. Creosote from the burning wood will condense (especially from a slow fire) and run down inside the pipe, and you want that to stay inside rather than run down the outside of the stovepipe.
Use only special high-temperature paint, if you paint.
Glad to see him putting in heat shields! People have been killed by stoves igniting houses.
Wasn’t super comfortable he doesn’t have a clean out tee. Especially since he cut cost and went with what looks like single wall pipe on the outside. Soot and creosote is going to build up quick as the exhaust starts to cool.
Think about reversing the smoke pipe sections from the wood stove by using the female end first from the stove connection. This will help prevent the creosote from running down the outside of the pipe connection seams after some usage . Still an Excellent video.
The amount of trust and coordination between you and your sheila is legendary.
I would love to have the kind of relationship you and your wife have. In my community its hard to find a good woman like that.
Something really satisfying about hearing a hammer and nails instead of an impact drill and screws....🤷♂️
Impact drivers are annoying. REEEEEE! REEEEEE!
It’s not a great sound, but I doubt I’ll ever hammer a nail again.
They are called framing nailers or nail guns. No one uses impact drivers to frame.
@@raicebannon1936 I do, but I don’t frame stuff for a living. That would be too expensive and take too long.

Love the use of the claw hammer when twisting the steel bracket
I agree, that taught me something new I wouldn't have thought of.
Hello nice to meet you I love you
Love this series. Adore Brooks touches to it with the pine garland, pine cones, wreath, the sloth painted door…..
I kinda have a crush on you two, lol.
Hey man, I gotta say that I am very grateful to you for these videos. My partner has some land that we're building a few tiny houses on and we were struggling to get something up before winter so we ended up just following right along with this video series and it looks like we're gonna have something very similar to this completed in a week or two. This kind of very simple comprehensive guidance that makes it all very accessible is hard to come by if you haven't grown up with anybody who does construction, and for both of us it's set us off on the path towards being able to do even more complex building projects, and I just want to say it's very much thanks to you in this case, so thank you! I'll send you pictures when it's done if you like.
Thank you

@@izzaborealisdries6896 modern "guidelines" around this are frequently misleading.
Historically, cultures have recognized that people don't stay the same, they grow. Sometimes, they grow apart. That's not a mistake, and I hope you can allow yourself some grace and give both of you permission to grow.
Be the example you need for your self, and I hope you find your path to happiness.

I too subbed due to pt1, the simplicity and almost casual manner of the build is truly inspirational, I’m almost beginning to believe I could do this....
You could do it!

Just use the swear jar you inevitably need to create for this project to fund the furnishings and you will be living like a king/ queen
The part about burning the wood stove beforehand was interesting! In all the videos I've seen of people talking about wood stoves they've used for their homes, none of them have ever mentioned burning it beforehand (though probably because they didn't know themselves) or about any smell it's produced. Thanks for the tip!
THIS HUSBAND AND WIFE DONE A GREAT JOB ! 👍🏽
This is Zen to me, with understated background music very little talk, just poetry in motion of you and Brooke. Blessings to all. 😃🇺🇸
o yes , coffee feet up and zen out :)
Why would anyone downvote such a great, informative video? These people are nothing short of Saints, IMO. They're providing a useful service and God Bless them for it.
HOA and government representatives.
You can find someone, somewhere, to downvote anything. Kittens baking apple pies - somebody out there will downvote it. Apples are too tart! Kittens don't have opposable thumbs! You left the crust out too long before baking. Some people are just killjoys.
Excellent work both in construction and presentation. Nice to see two people who KNOW what they're doing and quintessential team work. Accurate information presented in the proper sequence, BRAVO Dave and Brooke.
Thank you kindly!
How much does all this cost? It’s about the size of my room which I spend all my time in outside of work. Love your speech about spending wisely. I feel that.
After re-viewing this and part 1, I could see myself living in a small cabin... a wee bit larger... the way you've built it. But at 68 and in a wheelchair, unable to work as well as I used to, it seems far off. On Social Security, I'm lucky to afford to eat regularly, so I must disagree with the idea that "anyone" can afford it. I still dream. For years I had put it off, because my former wife thought that living off the grid in a remote cabin was not a good idea... away from doctors, friends, Walmart. But as I said to her then, I'd rather die quietly in the woods than to live five years longer in a noisy, dirty city. To each their own, I guess! Thank you.
Maybe your current or next girl will build one for you.
Have to agree with the "anyone can afford it". There's a lot of people struggling just to have a few extra dollars at the end of the month, and this assumes being able to afford a piece of property and the annual taxes on it to begin with. I would have been happier with a title of "almost anyone can afford".
@@NorthernKitty I think that is unfair to lay on Dave. Yes there are people who are struggling. There are also people who have saved, used long term planning to build and live their dreams. They've also developed a skill set to allow them to do things cheaper. Dave and Brooke have worked hard, developed skill sets, bought remote property that is less expensive, sourced and saved materials at reasonable costs that allow them to do this. Why not celebrate a win instead of trying to correct this man over a matter of wording and others views of the world? A bungalow on the Bird Streets in LA right now is about 25 million. Everything is relative.
@@5thdimension625 Lol! That would be good. Now that my grandchildren have kids, and live 3000 miles away, I can't expect much help! Maybe if I win the lottery (magically), I'll hire some elves to build my house in the deep woods.
@@dianajean4837 I didn't lay anything on Dave, I simply agreed with the original poster that it's more accurate to say "most" people and not "all". Nor did I fail to "celebrate a win", my OTHER comment here was: "Thanks so much for sharing this, inspiring dreams!!" I thought Thomas made a fair point and merely explained why. For all either you or I know, Dave may fully agree in retrospect. There are a ton of people with nothing right now despite a lifetime of saving and planning. I just felt we shouldn't ignore that reality. I'm truly sorry if you feel they're somehow at fault for their own circumstances and not worthy of any consideration, or perhaps just wanting to practice denial that they exist. Finally, if you were so interested in creating more positivity in the world, you wouldn't have turned my comment into something it wasn't, trying to pick a fight with me.
prt 1 has inspired me to build one on my little property for a hunting spot
Hi nice to meet you
Love the use of the claw hammer when twisting the steel bracket
Watching this gives me the same feeling as growing up watching this old house. Like peaceful and content and it's magical watching how it all comes together.
Yes this old house was so soothing and these videos make it feel like I can make my little house very inspiring
Um, Brooke is goals. I couldn't even measure our bathroom vanity accurately.
You two looked very familiar but I couldn’t place it in Part 1. Now, it finally hit me that you were on “Alone.” That is probably the greatest reality show ever made. This is a great video also. Keep up the good work.
Nice! That red on black color scheme is perfect! I love that you used an old pane of glass for your big picture window.( I however would have used a foam strip on the inside of the window frame before installing that glass. It would have sealed out cold and also, provided a snug fit. Just walking in the cabin will create vibration and over time create a bigger gap in the window seal, even if caulked on the inside and outside. ) But my man, you are an expert crafts couple. I loved watching you build this:) Ill be checking out more of your videos.
You are so talented there is no way I can buildt his cabin. Looks just amazing. Well done. Thank you .
Not as a first project, no. You can work your way up in skill, if you so choose.
Everything is affordable, except for the land and view. That is priceless.

I enjoyed seeing all the hand tools used.
I love your video so much ❤️👍
Yes, hand tools always work, and no batteries. Jim
Love the way this guy narrates the video, reminds me a little bit of those old Warren Miller ski movies, but with less cheesy humor.
Who the heck downvoted this video? Dave, you and your wife seem like such gentle souls. Also, this video series has been both informative and peaceful. THANKYOU!
Thanks
I think you should have to explain your thumbs down when you give it, it makes no sense
I've built many sheds and chicken coops like this! Hopefully others will take an interest in doing this themselves and save a lot of money!
Door should open outward, only thing that I would definitely do different. Reason more space inside and harder to be kicked or forced in and also for escape reasons, a fire, multiple people, it's easier to get out.

@@katherineuribe2952 I don't normally like to brag on that point but then again.....it is sort of a nice accomplishment to reach this 'mature' age, right Katherine!!?? :>) Jim C.
Something I found when building my house, the harder I hit those nails the less often they bent. Lots of gentle taps seemed to warm them up and soften them. Bam, bam, bam, bam. Done.
You learn a lot doing your own work.
You better wear some good hearing protection when hammering nails, this is the worst noise cause of hearing loss.
Super cool project. I love your philosophy and encouragement that anyone is capable of affording and building something like this.
Thanks
Yes, it sure is nice to see that wood fire burning and the smoke coming outta that chimney! Super satisfying to watch you both building. It warms my heart just to see it! Love your collie too, she looks just like Lassie!
I literally saw part 1 for the first time ever yesterday. And then, lo and behold, the second one arrives the very next day!
Literally?
Same here
@@doublezero7852 The one and only time it is acceptable to use the word “literally”.
(Thought in retrospect, I realize it may have contributed to the muddying of the conversational waters, so to speak)
I always let my wall sheathing extend down past the end of my sub-floor plywood so rain doesn't run in and saturate it.
Smart idea.
maybe he doesn't because the plywood is treated?
Those 2x6 foundation pieces would benefit from that as well. They weren’t treated.
It also secures the wall better
*FAUX News* can't fix anything.
I've watched this series a couple of times. I've haven't built my own cabin, yet, but I will one day!
Thank you so much for sharing each step of this incredible journey. Super inspired by both of your talent and hard work! :)
I love how real this guy is :-) seems like a good person to hang out with
The two of them were on the show "Alone" and I thought the same thing :) I won't spoil it for you, but needless to say, they built a very cool shelter. Brooke's "temporary shelter" was impressive on its own.
I didn't expect part 2 to be released this quick. Great progress!
Hello nice to meet you I love your video so much ❤️👍
@@processingbenefitsbt6306 Thank you. :-D
I would like to thank Brooke and You for taking the time to make this useful and wonderful video..you guys are awesome!!!
First of all Thank you for taking your valued time in making this video!
You sir are a true man and what real man should be and will be the help of the younger people of today’s world.
I have thought of buying property in the crown land area I have camped my whole life with my family. A very special place for me and my wife.
I wanted to build my own bunkie on land to start and then eventually build a house there. This just helped me so much! I will most likely copy this exact video top to bottom. Just maybe different stain although I do love that one.
Please keep making these videos I can watch this all day.
I'm looking for part 3!! .... Really enjoyed this one!!!
I so appreciate you giving us a lifetime's worth of little hints and such. You're a great teacher. Thanks for this!
Thank you for this. My wife and I are considering giving this a shot. You make it look easy and really enjoyed watching the video
So cool, man. I can breathe the fresh air and feel the peace of mind through the screen.
When screwing roof sheets, always use the longer screws and screw through the ridges of the roof sheets, not the valleys. That roof will leak like a sieve because the screws are in the valleys. Apart from that, I enjoyed the videos. Just need our little piece of paradise to build one of these on!
Yea, also, there are these little rubber (ebonite?) studs to put under the ridges so you don't damage the sheet when screwing; and for a tighter fit.
Okay, does Dave’s voice remind anyone of Tom Bodett? He was the voice in the Motel 6 commercials “we’ll leave the lights on for you”.
I get a Dick Proenneke vibe.
Yep I got a Tom Bodette vibe. “We’ll leave the stove on for ya.”
I was thinking Nick Offerman yeah?
@@cdevidal and the music also matches the old commercials
@@brianfrommilwaukee The film's producer, Bob Swerer, was the one that actually narrated Alone in the Wilderness, not Proenneke.
So relaxing and inspiring. I swear I smell that first fire of the stove once it was actually installed :')
i never understand how videos like this get thumbs down!!! Thank you for these awesome videos!
So peaceful watching these building videos. I imagine myself living in there, away from the crazy world! Thank you!
I was waiting for this! Love the music in the background btw
Hi nice to meet you I love your video so much ❤️
I love all your videos. Your cabins are fantastic and I learn a lot from watching you build.
I'm so happy I found these videos this is amazing!
building something like this with dad is the best bonding and always pleasure
especially in winter time
absolutely amazing. Millionaires and famous people aren't on top of the food chain, you two are.
Thanks
Was a joy to watch. Thank you.
This was awesome! Thank you for sharing!
I love the fact you did this wholesome and family like... so many dudes pimp out their wife on RUclips. This was so peaceful to watch and informative!
I need a couple of acres, one of these, a creek 😅, some seeds and some farm animals! Is that too much to ask? 🤷🏽♂️
Thank both of you for everything, in these trying times, we need more like you two.
Thanks you for join us
You are so skilled, what a pride you must feel at the end.
So inspirational, this video got me out of depression. Thanks !!
Your dog is so soothing to look at. A masterpiece of a dog.👏👏
Day 272 of quarantine: ‘I’m going to build myself a cabin.’
I´m thinking about same...
You need a boyfriend
😂
There is no quarantine......
@@user-rx9ur5iw1b No! YOU need a boyfriend! :D
This build with step by step instructions is fantastic. Thank you both
Watching this is sooo relaxing
"Knock, knock, knock... nobody's home!" I needed that laugh today, thanks. Nice project. I'm really enjoying watch it progress.
Oh man, I cannot wait until the third one. The first two have been awesome and inspirational.
I just appreciate the upfront advice! You tell it like it is and inspire us to do something about life and not let our fear or insecurity get in the way of getting out and doing it! 👍
Y'all got it going on. Love it!
Looking for part 3, the inside, this is brilliant, well done
here again
it`s so soothing and relaxing to watch this type of videos
You seem like you'd be a great guy to work for, very laid back yet extremely informative and knowledgeable.
It's nice to have a build like this ty guys 🙂 great work!
Im an oil painter and this would be a sick art studio.
why?
I was just thinking this would be nice for a small recording studio. Getting electricity would be expensive though in an area like this
@@user-rx9ur5iw1b "sick" means "really nice" in his sentence.
I've learned so much from this two part series, thanks so much Dave!
Watched the first part and half the second before I recognized you two from Alone. Great videos, very informative and really appreciate the parts where you emphasize anyone can do this and it's in our DNA to build for ourselves. I keep telling my family I'm going to build my own house one day and they just laugh at me.
Oh man! I just loved this. Can't wait to start part 3!
I’m thoroughly impressed... you are blessed to have a partner like her... I aspire🙌🏾
The red on black looks absolutely great! Wonderful job, kudos!
Excellent work and I'm looking forward for the next phase! Thank you !
Just brilliant!! Well done Dave & Brooke.... you guys are awesome and a great team! with love from the UK.
Amazing work, as always.
