      Isn’t engineering similar to woodworking? Also, is engineering similar to something like carpentry as well?

    • @luke-i1w
      @luke-i1w 3 года назад +13

      @@Someonelikekanye It is. Unfortunately in school we don't learn any of the hands on stuff. I can tell you all about the tensile and compressive strength of wood or any other material and how thick a beam needs to be to support "x" amount of weight, but the actual installation of the beam and how to use all of the tools is not covered. Most engineers are "self taught" in the hands on portion because we like it and that's what drove us to engineering in the first place, but there is no guarantee an engineer will know how to use every tool or know the tricks of the carpentry trade. I really like thermodynamic systems, and that's what I specialize in (think rockets and internal combustion engines) so other than the basics, woodworking is a very foreign topic to me. I know I could learn it, and that's part of the reason I'm watching these videos. To learn tips and tricks and expand my knowledge!

    As someone who has always dreamed of building my own little cabin in the woods but never got any foundation in construction, I thank you immensely for filming the entire process and showing how easy it can actually be. It's a huge inspiration, and I hope to start on my own cabin next season!

    I love seeing the old tools still in use. There's something real satisfying about using old tools. I pulled out carpet and installed Hardwood floors a few years back in my house. I used an old ball peen hammer that was my Grampy's from probably 100 years ago when he was a machinist (I put a new hickory handle on it and use it often doing automotive jobs) but it got the job done (mostly used the flooring hammer but it was needed to face nail a few boards). Only later did I find not 1 but 2 Estwing framing hammers in the basement of that house.

    Had you put up solar panels on the roof, you could have plumbed electrical outlets and even have a plastic tank for water. Oh yea I would have put up brick backing for the fireplace so the heat doesn’t heat up the wood to much. All in all amazing job Dave 👍

Just because you don't follow the same beliefs, doesn't mean you have to criticise. Im an atheist and I seriously love the ideas that this person represents. Just, don't be such an ass to people that are trying to spread such positivity.

    Just recently started watching your channel and your wife’s channel. I’m trying so hard to believe in myself. A 50 yr old female, that I can make this myself. I watch this particular video sometimes twice a day for encouragement. Saved the $, trouble finding a place that doesn’t have restrictions and I can camp while building. Thank you, your family’s videos help my anxiety and give me hope when I feel like there isn’t any. I pray for your family and that I’ll be brave enough to try. Thank you! I also love that you use your grandfather’s tools.
