I'm a nurse who has worked with spinal cord injury patients for years. Everyone's recovery story is different. Everyone's reaction to the loss of their mobility is different. But I've seen people after injury finish school, engage in sports, even to the Olympic level, start successful businesses, get married, have children, etcetera. Some of the problem is self-defeatist attitude, but some of it is not having access to resources, or simply not knowing resources are available.
Having said all that, you're right that many of us create our own obstacles. That's always been true. It's sometimes sobering to really count your blessings and realize that there are more possibilities out there that we prevent ourselves from seeing because of our own insecurities and such.

The biggest problem, is having the money for the land to build on. Land owners have gotten greedy and hiked up the prices for land because of the people that want to live off grid.

    • @nekro5342
      @nekro5342 2 года назад +1

@@TheKydyr it doesn't change the basic message that he was trying to impart here I think. Basically, identify what is important to you and work towards that goal. Old car, old truck, patched up clothes, cheap cell phone on a cheap plan. It feels like in today's society we are measured by our possessions so everybody strives to get the latest thing.
Screw the latest thing, figure out what you actually want and need and work towards that goal. I admire the message he was passing on.

That's the best stuff there, that's the stuff that CAN'T be bought! I love not having to ask anyone for help, in as many ways as humanly possible, sometimes I wonder why there aren't more folks like us in the world!! Why are people ok with being unable to change the oil? Or replace their water heater??? Both require two, maybe three tools. All of which are 20 bucks or less and are usually in your home already!!!! Oh well, just means there are endless opportunities for us opening businesses or even inventing new things to make life easier and more lazy for the ones who "can't"!!!

Hi. I used to live in North Pole. My daughter and I used to hit the dump Pavillions. We were at Foxx at their's once. I gut out of my car and started up to it. There were huge sheets of packing paper covering half the floor of the Pavillion . Just as I got to it a big German Shepard came running out from under those papers and ran up into the back of a vehicle and before I could catch my breath, here came the fellow you must be talking about. He ran on his hands, climbed up into the back and in seconds they were gone. He had long hair and a beard. I also have never forgotten him. He is a marvel. You are the first person I have talked to who has seen him. By the way, we built our little cabin in North Pole for around three thousand dollars, thanks to all of the good usable lumber in dumpsters. God bless.

You made my husband cry. He has been wanting to do some woodworking to sell chairs, etc. He's a maintenance manager (hands on) by trade, not a woodworker. Although he has done some remodeling. We set up a shop in the backyard. He's been putting off starting because he's so unsure of his skills. Your speech motivated him. He's in the back yard now with some 2x10's to make viking chairs. He's a recovered alcoholic (about 25 yrs now) and stopped going to AA because of the "cry babies" in the meetings all feeling sorry for themselves because they can't drink. He poured himself into his work instead of drinking. Now we're 66 and he's starting a new chapter in his life. Your stories gave him the kick in the pants he needed to start. Thank you. p.s. I was in the Bellevue, WA transit center one afternoon (at least 16 years ago) and saw a man on a skateboard. He had no body from the hips down. Only from the ribcage up. He "sat" on the skateboard and propelled himself with his hands. It took me a moment for my brain to register what I was seeing. Remarkable.

I was in business creating wood strutures out of free wood from the storm. My point is --if you expect it to happen, it does and I didn't even have to buy the lumber. Includes pictures to give you ideas for layouts and such. If you are looking for a guide, this is not exactly what you want. But if you are trying to familiarize yourself with the way that pole barn building and other out buildings, are made, then this will work just as you need it to. A few things in this book are a barn (of course), detached garage, storage building, and coops.

HAHAHA!!!! I'm a woodworker and have a very bad clamp addiction, I love the things, but they are EXPENSIVE!!!! Not if you buy one, everyone can afford 10, 12, or even 50 bucks! If you want it bad enough, there are more ways than you know to have it, WHATEVER IT is!!! For crying out loud, there's even songs telling us this!!
🎶I got it one piece at a time, and it didn't cost me a dime! You'll know me when I come through your town!"🎵 The guy who works at a car factory and can't afford to buy one, take one home in your lunch box, one piece at a time, hilarious and true. Norm Abrams taught me carpentry, "The Idiot's Manual " taught me how to fix the busses. Thank goodness for RUclips. It is now my go to place to figure out how to fix things and build things. Heck, your video taught me how to insulate a floor!

HAHAHAHAHA!!!! Let me ask you this miss CAN DO, has your "husband" ever once felt like he was letting you down by not knowing how to help out with all the stuff that comes with LIVING????!? I've always felt there are some things that EVERYONE should be able to do, change a damn tire, hang window blinds, patch a hole in a wall, even as in depth as something like replacing a water heater or routine maintenance of the climate systems where you live. There is a crazy high number of people who can't change the filter in the furnace, some don't even know it needs to be done!!!!!
I'm not sexist in any way at all, but lots of folks are, admit it or not, it made me laugh to look up after reading your comment and saw Karla instead of a guy's name, seems like your the man of the house here miss thang, that's frickin awesome!!! I say, throw it in his face any and every time you get the chance!!! Obviously I'm not trying to start a fight or anything, use it lightly and as a joke, but USE IT!!! One day he may want to man up and at least HELP you fix something!!!! Keep on being awesome sister!!!! Don't ever let anyone tell you that you can't do whatever the hell you want!!

A turning point in my life was watching a dryer repair man my girlfriend hired, spend about 45 seconds to change the belt and fix it without even using a single tool!!!! Two hands and a belt sold at walmart. He reached underneath, pulled out the broken one, put the new one under and jiggled around for a few seconds, not even being able to see what he was doing, it was so easy he could have been blind. From that point till now, I will try and fail TEN TIMES to do something before I call someone to do it for me. I don't understand why all of us don't do the same, with as many parts of daily life as possible, it can't be just pure laziness right?? Is it no self confidence?? I don't get it.

I whole-heartedly agree ... My late grandmother used to say "Can't never could and never will" She was born in 1910 and raised her family through the Great Depression. She was 4' 10" and 95 lbs soaking wet. And she did whatever she needed to do .
Once she had to change the tire on the family's 2.5 ton flat bed log truck ( logging without modern equipment except a tractor and old Willys jeep) and couldn't find the jack... She blocked up under that wheel and then dug a hole so she could both get off the flat and put on the new tire.
IMO, greatest thing about YT should be that folks can see what is capable for them to accomplish not what they can't do.
Greatest YT tubes have a common trait .. problem-solving, troubleshooting , and a CAN-DO attitude.
    Keep up the great content.

MY response to living in a small cabin is: have you tried it? My grandfather had a small one room cabin overlooking the river, not sure of the size but I would think 10'x12'. He added a screened in porch on the river side. His front door was an actual submarine door that he picked up from a Navy Surplus store. His outhouse was built onto the back of the cabin later on and had huge iron barrels that he'd dump lye into. We would walk down the steep embankment to fetch water, the stove was a kerosene stove that we used to cook on and heat the cabin. To bathe, we would go down to the river with our Ivory soap ( because it floats) we just had to make sure it didn't float down river. It was my favorite place and now memory. Don't knock it unless you try it.

Sounds rather great to me as well. The people who think it's crazy don't know how unbelievably amazing it feels to step back and look at something and say, I built that, experience those kinds of endorphins and seeing the look of envy and even sometimes jealousy on people's faces, and you'll do all you can, everywhere you can, just to feel it again and again!!! Pretty great to know that if the whole damn system falls apart, I can cut down some trees and build myself a VERY comfy space, I will NEVER be "homeless" cause I can build one!!! Can't imagine now, having taken any other path in life, I'm happy with my choices thus far which makes me happy with me. It's an easy way to avoid taking all the drugs that clog the airways of the idiot box. Some call em televisions I've been told......

We have to realize though, that some people are never going to be happy living this way. I've lived this way for 55 or so years and I love it. I have little 10x12 shed houses I made, each one has a different function....and these are my house. My bathroom for instance is a 8x8 timber frame structure with greenhouse material on it. Because I live in the desert, the sun is almost always out, and by 9am, its 80 in there. There is a camping propane shower in there, a stock tank sunk in the ground where the water goes and I pump it out to the peach tree outside the greenhouse. I have a compost toilet. I have no need, or desire, to live any other way. I built everything here on this property, and have lived here alone for 18 years, and before that in different wilderness areas, in an army navy surplus tent. Women can do this, they just have to adapt everything to their size, weight and strength levels.

We lost our home when hurricane Micheal came through. Our 12x20 Atlas Shed made it so we fixed it up and lived in it for 7 months, cooking on a BBQ, rented an outhouse and showered at my sons or late at night in the dark with a garden hose. I was 63, worked hard to recover and we are better people for the experience! We fed neighbors, helped whoever we could. I agree with you! We can do anything we put our minds to and we can do it with grace and joy!
By the way, we here in Florida use tie downs to secure our buildings, giant screws that you put the the ground then strap it to the building. Saves a lot in a hard wind. Our shed survived 155 mph sustained wind for over 1 hour because of those tie downs.
Anyway, I throughly enjoyed these videos and it made me want to go build something!
By the way it was just myself and 24 year old daughter that did everything needed to recover. I’m like you, I can’t stand these whinny guys that are still living at home who complain about having to even get a job let alone really accomplish anything productive.

After I became a Christian I learned there was a Bible verse that told me basically the same thing. I can do anything through Christ who strengthens me. My kids dad and I believed that wholeheartedly for the almost 45 years we had together before his death. When people were surprised by the things we still did albeit a little slower when we became disabled I would tell them "We are disabled not dead!" Enjoy your channel immensely.

New land is getting made all the time, due to wars, revolutions, government actions, etc. Living in US, or Canada you can be reasonably sure that your land will stay yours. But even in old Europe - mere 70 years ago WWII & communist revolution wiped out pretty much all land ownership in my country.
