I wanted something more, I want to build something cozy, make it beautiful inside and out, and have a family. Make technology a little luxury instead of it being so intrusive in my life. I find you so inspiring, I hope I get there one day.

In the 80's, my grandma lived by herself in the mountains about 15 minutes outside a very small town called Front Royal, Virginia. Front Royal at the time was considered really remote for those of us living 50 or 60 miles away near Washington D.C. To me, it was remote enough. At night it was super quiet and no light pollution from any city, so you could see all the stars in the sky. My grandma had one neighbor in a house right next to hers, but the next neighbors were a quarter mile down the road. She had electricity and running water (from her own well), but she stocked up food to limit her trips into town. She used to freeze most of her food to make it last. So, my grandma wasn't "off the grid" or living as a caveman, but it was simple enough and remote enough so she could enjoy the benefits, but still get to town in 15 minutes if need be. I think most people can do the same as well. You don't have to choose between city apartment living or a Survivor man type of lifestyle. There are many ways to live and find your own happiness.

Have something that's paid for and not have to worry about your next month's payment. Plus you feel proud of something you built your self. Yes, it is satisfying. Plus being in touch with nature. I feel one could use modern technology. Such as solar panels. You don't have to give up everything. I like what you do. Keep doing it. I love the little cabin with the green roof. I call it the "guaranteed" not to leak cabin. I wish I could have seen the way you built that. At any rate, I love your videos. Remember. You can't please everyone. @Svetla Nikolova it can be very hard our first couple years here were very hard but we've dreamed up little contrivance has that helped us and there's a lot of good videos out there about contrivances in shortcuts that can be helpful and eat ultimately we purchased a small generator couple solar panels a propane stove and we even have a propane heater for backup it always saw chimney gets clogged or something like that so you know it's actually not as hard as it used to be and it's going to get easier with every new thing that we add. I'm not going to lie if you start with nothing I mean we started with a garden shed and a couple very primitive hand tools and that's it and if you start with nothing it is very hard indeed but it doesn't have to stay that way and if you have a little money it doesn't even have to start that way

You can simplify your life without going to the extreme, to be totally off grid, unless it becomes necessary. To me, the key is preparing, testing and being ready if/when it comes to that point. Until that happens, I intend to enjoy my creature comforts, since there's no reason not to.
I'm a 70 yr old, female, living in northern Mi on wooded acreage that has a mobile home, pole barn, and shed on it (I've also added a small travel trailer). I have two wells on my property, but also have earth straws to be able to turn them into hand pumped wells (if no electric) and a river nearby. To me, this is heaven on earth and I love it! I'm in good health, but not dumb enough to think I can handle building a cabin on my own, so I chose other ways to fulfill those needs. (I have a 50 yr old son, but he knows mom likes to do things on her own.) I bought this property a year before I retired in 2019 (took me 4 years to find the right place and I paid cash) and sold my site-built house in 2020. I periodically shut everything down for a few days or so, to test my systems, to see what needs tweaking and I see any disruption in power as an opportunity to do the same. I have backups for my backups and I mix modern backups, such as solar, power stations, generators, chainsaws and propane, with old school backups, such as oil, kerosene, charcoal, handsaws and wood. Some of my preps are over 100 years old and still work as intended.
Some people will never get it, no matter how it's explained to them, but for those of us who do get it, my hat's off to you!

I know this is an older video but I wanted to thank you for defending those if us that are doing what we can afford and what we can physically do. I'm 65, retired and had a small cottage built out in the woods. In order to find land that I could afford I couldn't get a lot that would work for solar, so instead I super insulated my house with double walls, triple pane windows, and R-60 in the attic. I hear with a wood stove, grow my own vegetables, and raise hens for eggs. I still cut, split and stack my own wood but I use and electric chainsaw and splitter. I use the electricity for lights and to run the well and my cooking stove runs on propane. It's just me and my 2 dogs out here but the way I have everything set up I hope to last another 20 years out here. My life is simple, I have as little impact on the environment as possible and I'm living my dream, modified to fit my age. I do wish I'd been braver 40 years ago but you can't regret the path you've walked. Keep doing what you do.

I speak Mopan Maya, Kekchi Maya, Spanish, Creole and English. There are many villages in Belize where there is no Electricity and we use lamps or small kerosene bottle lamps. Our village is one of many places without electricity and we are completely off-grid. We do not have cellphone service, internet, cables to watch movies or shows, and we dont own many electronic things at home. I have a cellphone yes but I only use it when I come to work. What you are doing is amazing and I am very very happy to see that someone with opportunities in life tends to experience how I live daily. Our house is almost the same as that cabin. But in this world, you can never satisfy anyone. There are so many ignorant and negative people who do not care of the sacrifice, the effort that you are doing to build and share something for them to learn or enjoy. They will always have something to say and it just make me sick . But I am going to tell you that what you are doing is so inspiring. It's just like he said it's what decisions you make you know if you choose to go back to basics back to the blanket it could be very difficult our first few years we didn't really have anything because we lost most everything we had lost our jobs our health our home but our path is easier the more we go along because we have a propane stove we have a couple small solar panels a small portable generator a small propane heater we have a wood stove in insulation now LOL it's all what money you have what you can do with your hands what contrivances you know how to build or 10 purchase it can be completely up to you how primitive simple difficult that it is

Excellent. My son recommended your site about a week ago and I'm glad he did. I got "infected" with back-to-the-land fever in the early 70's and did a lot of reading but in the end life took me in a different direction. The idea never left me though. Now, at the other end of life, my son and his family have picked up some land and we are all going to take some time to build a conventional cabin this summer. Exciting. I was not troubled by the stove and so on. I understood what you were doing. There's no way I could go 100% off grid. But homemade energy? Definitely. I might add that what my early obsession with the back to the land thing gave me was many years of satisfying gardening with many successful seasons. Canning, drying and freezing my produce, and building a garden shed, mulch bins and so on.

You and your wife are such kind souls to share your lives with us and being from Boston I can't tell how relaxing and enjoyable it is to see your videos! Your videos and Brook's have given me some great ideas, not just for off grid living, but to pay attention to my own footprint here where I am and to appreciate the peace and solitude of the outdoors or getting away every now and again on to the trails or whenever I go camping or hiking, I feel more prepared or I look for things now, I didn't see before. I'm less intimidated to try something. If you're doing it "wrong" for some people, I'd have to say you're doing it right for a lot more! You're video on your trip across Canada to Alaska was just breathtaking! Thankyou again to you and your lovely wife for taking the time to make these videos and share your knowledge with us!

Off grid is noone knowing where you are and being disconnected from society, and institutions. It has nothing to do with cooking on a wood stove or building your own home. A multi millionaire could privately contract a team of builders blindfold them fly them somewhere remot and have them build a mansion, that has its own power, water supply, sewage, satellites for phones and wifi, nstural gas drills, etc basically all modern amenities, blind fold them and fly them away. Then fly their helicopter out there by themselves, and that would be more off grid than anything this man has done.

You get that you saying no one can be off grid is just an opinion of yours. Your definition of offgrid is not the same as others. My definition of offgrid is not connected to the power grid or having to pay the utilities companies. Your definition is reducing modern technologies. We are both right.

Ive watched several of your video's and really enjoy them. Thank you for that. And I want to say you've got it spot on talking about off grid living. 'Off Grid' is a term that popped up about 30 years ago and all it meant at 'that' time was to be disconnected from the Grid... the power Grid. That's what the Grid is... It is the system of electricity that flows thru the US from sea to shining sea. Then 'off grid' popped up in some movie phrase and then off grid became a term for removing yourself completely from civilization. People have their own definition of off grid so you see, you describe it perfectly and those commenters that throw all the negativity your way need to grow the F up. They have no idea.. Off Grid does not mean total self reliance... Total self reliance is total self reliance.

Being off grid is a learning curve.
When I first started growing food, my family would have starved the first year...now I can grow food all year, in a real winter with freezing temps. And it's saved me a lot of money growing all my own greens! Market greens go bad so fast in those plastic tubs, I was always throwing lettuce away, no matter how diligent I was at using it. Now I pick as needed.
Everything I learn, adds to my ability to one day be able to live off the grid, if I had to.
When it becomes necessary...you will be readier than you would otherwise. There are a lot of people that will never "get it" no matter what you show them. Keep sharing your progress for the rest of us to see and learn!

What a great way to explain off grid, and set some people straight... We are seniors and have never really chosen to be off grid, except when we go boondocking every chance we get and kayaking, etc. I fly drones and love photography but still have considered myself as an outdoorsman. As you say, there is not a stereotype or set of rules in life, other than aging and taxes. You are a great storyteller and video editor, so keep 'em coming as often as possible...

Like the guy said being off-grid simply means you're not connected to the electric lines the gas lines if your world enough possibly not the water lines are sewer lines so technically we're off grid but we have a tiny solar array tiny portable generator we can power our phones or phones have internet we can tether our computer to our phones and have a laptop we can cook on a propane stove only is old-fashioned as you want to be it's your choice and of course of course local ordinance

To me, the term "off grid" means simplicity without connectivity. What I mean by this is that you live a satisfying, simple life without being connected to the power grid. Self sufficient and "smart sufficient" goes hand in hand and you have that with your cabin setup. The propane stove is a luxury but it is a tool that requires no power from THE GRID. You are doing it right, don't let the trolls dictate who you are and what you do. You keep doing you and be happy doing it.

Good video with some damn good points raised. I’m 47 years old and I’ve lived half my life off grid and half my life connected to the grid. I can assure you the times off grid were a hell of a lot more satisfying, less stressful and a lot more healthy. Of course, that’s just how I see it. I can also tell you that most of those off grid locations were within a 15 mile drive of the nearest store. Yep, a general store, you know the kind of store that sells just about everything you need. Not a Walmart, just little family owned places with a couple gas pumps and friendly smiles. Some of the locations were accessible by road, others required a half mile hike in from the road. Some were in the cold Northeast of USA, some in Hawaii and a couple in the jungle on an island near India. Bottom line is this, we choose how we live if we are smart enough to do just that and having some “modern” amenities like a propane tank (lmao, “modern”) are great. Generators are wonderful too for charging batteries, running hand tools and yes, even the occasional movie to watch. Screw these people that have some issue with the way you live brother. Just keep on keepin on. And they wonder why you choose to live further away from all the self righteous wackos......
