best video in a long time. thanks for giving us some insight. I realised a lot of hate against the participants and social media. it was really bad. history's youtube channel or fb site doesnt delete any of the awful comments tough
Hey Lilly, thanks for the comment. I'll be covering other aspects of the experience in future vids, is there anything you would like to see covered in particular?
hm not in particular really, but I will definetly listen to your future videos with a lot of interest. oh and btw I am subscribed to you now too :) cheers
Hi lilly! I’m not survivalist or outdoor person but i really love watching these kind of videos, i also subscribed on your channel for a long time and still watching your videos... what i think of those people whose bashing you and giving some awful insults to all youtubers, participants of alone or even tv personalities they are the people that thinks they are better than anyone else and childish. Those are the people that everybody will encounter even in our daily lives, at work, school, public places and sometimes relatives or sometimes “friends”... my advice or opinion, just IGNORE them stay humble and just do what you love to do, WE, the good people are not here in this world to please them... and always remember there are more people who loves you and loves what you do... let’s just pray for them and hope that someday they will realize that they are not rock or superman... lol PS: looking forward for more videos! Always take care and God bless!
Congratulations on having been “Alone “. In 2015 / 2016 my wife had 3 or 4 trips to the ER. Twice the hospital kept her overnight for observation. The History channel was the best channel available. We watched episode of “Alone “ after episode. I commend you two and everyone else who have attempted it. Well done! 👍
I would love to see a show with 10 of the best. With everyone staying together and join knowledge and skills. It would be amazing to see how they build their community.
Sir,,,, you have it going on. Your channel and your wife’s are an inspiration to me. I am a 73 old man that is need of something after losing my wife but I have found your Chanel I think it’s going to be good Thanks Jimbo
When I joined the military, I wondered how I would get through it. It occurred to me that many people had gotten through it and I just needed to deal with each challenge as it came. Showering with 60 other girls, making it through a run with bad knees. Drill sergeants yelling was the least of my worries. I got through it and I am glad I didn't have a preconceived notion of what it would be like. Great tip!!
The way that you describe the "ALONE Family", the connection, the common ground that no one else understands unless they have been there & done it... That is exactly how it feels to go active, deploy, & then try to acclimate back into civilian society. You hit it right on point when you said "If you do it, you are not the same, & only others who have experienced it understand it." You all did your best. Thank you for sharing your account of the experience so that we may try to understand vicariously through you.
You are your wife are extraordinary people. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your sharing this insight. I binged all the seasons over the past 2 months and although I know it’s not for me, I have the utmost respect for you two and everyone that has been on the show. We’re so lucky to get a taste for the experience from the comfort of our homes. Beyond that, I love listening to you. You’re a highly intelligent, very real and inspirational human. I’ve been enjoying your channel equally. You’re living the dream so so many of us wish we could. Thank you for sharing! Wishing you and your wife all the best. I’m a fan for life and look forward to following whatever you choose to share.
I have nothing but the utmost respect for any participant in the Alone series. Its always easy for people to criticize from the comfort of their homes but when you're out there, alone, cold, wet and hungry its difficult to make good decisions regardless of your experience. Thanks, Dave for the enlightening discussion.
Excellent video, watched every second of it. Really brings to light what you don't see at home as a viewer. Very well done man, this is what the fans needed.
this is without a doubt one of the best videos I've seen in a very long time... thank you so much for doing it... I've been putting in for the show since season 3 and was contacted for season 6 did a phone interview and nothing after that... I'm hoping to join the alone family someday and once again thank you so much for this video helped out a lot... much love and respect from me... God bless you guys!
Dave, thanks for the well thought out, organized and interesting commentary. There is something special about your voice and video presence. The way you have is very confident and reassuring. Very interesting.
Love this perspective. So interesting. I just started watching this show and am totally addicted. I imagine it must be so shocking and life changing to live that experience. Best reality show ever. Thank you. To all the critics, please ease up on yourself because that’s the source of your judgement of others.
Great points. I caught my overweight, rusty skilled self, playing armchair general in 1st season. I realised early on, that we're only seeing 2% of the story, and here I'm in a warm room, fed, and comfy just blabbing like a dope. You summed it up nicely. Love to meet you someday and share a campfire and great convo.
More than anything, it's a mind game. You see this when competitors actually SO succeed at being warm and dry and fed. THEN it becomes about being happy. Hats off to you guys.. ALL of you. This is one of the purest tests of the human spirit i've ever seen. Bravo... really. :)
Great Great video Dave! Loved every minute of it. As a hopeful contestant and a fellow Michigander I want to sincerely thank you for all your advise and your honest thoughts. Alone has been my favorite show since season 1, and my wife and I were really rooting for you two in the seasons that you were there and were sad to see you tap... but we understood your reasons. Tons of respect for you both... as well as all those who have made that journey. I truly hope our paths will cross someday... thanks again, and thanks for all your videos on RUclips.
Loved hearing the "inside scoop" We discovered Alone during the shutdown and binged 6 seasons in probably 6 weeks. We adored you and Brooke and were heartbroken when you tapped out. We were rooting for you! Loved your house... it was so sweet. Respect to you both!
Watched your video on being on "ALONE"!! A great video!!!! As far as negativity from people....it's horrible!! I was always taught by my grandmother that," You do not know what you would do or how you would act unless you walk in their shoes!!" I have nothing but total respect for each person that has had this experience!!!!!! I can tell you that I know me and I would not be able to survive in those conditions!!!!!! Stay strong and God Bless you and Brooke both!! I am thankful the two of you had each other!!!! GREAT JOB GUYS!!!!!
Just started watching Alone series a couple weeks ago on Hulu... We are on our last season! Hubby and I love it! I saw a lot of hate about season 4 because they said that having teams is not being alone! We loved it....And my hubby and I loved you and your wife! We thought for sure you two would win! You both were awesome! The love and concern you two have for each other is simply amazing! Thank you so much for this video...It just happened to come up on my feed! I know it's 2 years old...But it is new to me! P.S. Out of all 7 seasons...You definitely made the best shelter ever!🥰
The change of perspective is really important. The closest I came to being alone in camping for three days (and nights) in the Desolation/Rockbound Valley area of Lake Tahoe in 1963, but it really had no effect on my perspective. The experience of spending months in Vietnam as a soldier and then suddenly coming coming home to California in 1967 did definitively change my perspective on life and how different people live, and spend their time. In Vietnam one realized the importance of life and how close people lived to the end of life. In America, no one paid attention to the importance of life. The people in America had not idea whatsoever about life in wartime Vietnam. That was a jarring experience coming home.
I am an odd bird in that I have always known about the show but have never watched it. The other day I was talking to a buddy and he was like "Dude, you should sign up and do it! You would kill it!" He encouraged me to look into it so here I am finding your video YEARS after you posted it. I have never spent more that a week or two alone like you discuss while living out of my bag. I have spent three to five weeks in the back country before with a small group of people, but that is infinitely different I suppose than attempting the insanity of going alone. Thank you for this very informative and personal video. You were correct about the "gems" or "nuggets" of what is real. The "rhythm" is the key. Developing a rhythm that works... critical information. As I do my research I am blown away by how many people are hung up on gear. Gear is important, please don't misunderstand me, but what you said affirms my thoughts that it's mindset first. Once again thank you! One day I would be humbled to sit across a fire and "split the atom" with you.
I grew up on the B. C. coast and am fully aware of what you were dealing with. Camping out in those coastal rains in the woods and that is just the beginning. My wife asked me what I would have done and my first comment was-build a cabin to get out of the wind and the rain. People have no idea what it is like to live through 40 days of constant rain while living in a nice dry home let alone out in the bush with primitive shelter in the wet cold winds that are constant over there. I was cheering you and Brooke on like you cannot believe when you were building it even though you had probably long since left the island by the time I was watching it. I know it was tough in some ways but I felt like you really made a great decision. The other thing i couldn't understand was why you weren't going after the clams and oysters, mussels and birds. I never considered red tide and the other rules. That was tough. Just keeping your firewood dry is a daily reality. People have no idea the caloric needs when you are out in that. You will use like 4-5000 calories just staying warm. Good on you and I'm loving your You tube vids.
So refreshing to hear your honesty. The best 55 minutes and 44 seconds spent on RUclips. I mediated through half of your video. Your approach deserves a huge kudos. Your honesty a beer. Your telling the story of how it all works made me appreciate a whole lot of things.
Thank you for some of the "story behind the story" from the perspective of a participant. I am too old and physically impaired to enjoy much of the outdoors experiences except vicariously through men and women like you who take the time and trouble to share. Looking forward to the next one! I would love to be disciplined enough to wait several weeks and binge watch them all at one sitting but that ain't happening.
Shout out from a Canadian in Ontario! Stumbled on you and your wife’s channel over the past week. Love the personality and wisdom you both control. I’ve learned a lot and reinvigorated my passion for learning how to do what you do. Then, I watched your Alone season and was really rooting for y’all! Can’t believe brook went back out there for S5 after almost starving to death, but that really proves her resilience and passion! Was really hoping one of you would try again though :) Thanks for the videos !
I was rooting for you two the whole time. I personally have been out there, alone, for a long time. It is a great accomplishment to last a few days. Much less 30, 60, 90 days with a button that makes it go away. I highly respect you all.
THANK YOU , DAVE , for giving some of these digital warriors a piece of how history unfolded for the strong man believer in how to survive under real difficult environments!!! You and Brooke are a real blast from the past with some very intellectual and hard work survival skills. We absolutely love all your videos. We also lived in Alaska way back in 1969 and 70s. On the Kenai Peninsula around Soldoton on the Buck Owen's property. Our real experience of a rough tough journey.
Hi Dave! I am new, to your channel, and have never seen an episode of "Alone", but after your candid perspective of what you go through, on the show, I will be watching and applying these practices in future survival excursions. I currently live in NE Wisconsin but am about to go off-grid in the UP. This has been a long time dream of mine and at 53, it is about time. Who knows, perhaps in a couple of years, if the show is still running, I may find myself on Vancouver Island! Lol! Either way, your candor is much appreciated! Thanks!
I love the way you see the world... incisive, intelligent, compassionate. Thanks for telling it like you see it. You and Brooke are both mentors to us all and it makes me hopeful in these crazy times.
Hi Dave I love you and your show. I have this to say about when people tell me that I "should have, could have, or they would have." I tell them that if I had a "TIME MACHINE" then that would be possible, but I end off saying that free advice, especially unasked for and unsolicited advice is worth that which I "didn't pay for nor ask for." Keep on doing the magic things with your show, I think it's ground breaking, and I have to say that I am with you every step of the way. It gives me the wonderful opportunity to be out in the woods alone, vicariously. It's fun and safe and I don't have to leave my easy chair >ha ha. Thanks very much. Fredrick Fowler.
Thanks for sharing this. I loved that you mentioned Les Stroud, I always found him very inspirational and he's what got me back out in the woods. Plus there's also that bit of Canadian pride when someone mentions him. You make a great point about people dumping on early tappers. I've always thought it unfair when people dump on the folks that tap out early. In a situation where you are going so minimal that losing a ferro rod probably means you're gonna freeze to death I completely understand tapping out. It isn't like camping where you have a lighter, a flint, and steel a ferro rod and can just drive home. When you are going so minimal that losing one thing could spell disaster I think it's a lot smarter to know your limits than to seriously risk your life and health just for prize money. No amount of money is worth your life. You can always make more money. Oh, and I really liked how you picked soap. Keep on being radical, eh.
Hi Dave. This is a great discussion. Thank you for this thought-provoking insight. I am mid-way through watching season four as I am writing this. I like camping but with the creature comforts. And I hate being cold and hungry, lol. So no Alone for me. We recently had the first season of Alone Australia here. Interestingly, the lady who won the show was someone I honestly thought would not last very long, purely because she was the only contestant to not bring a sleeping bag. That just demonstrates your comment that you just can't pick what will happen. I really enjoy both your own and Brooke's RUclips channels. Thanks for your content.
Thank you, Dave. This was a tremendously valuable summary in lead up to watching the show. I had never watched 'Alone' before and I just started at Season 6 on Netflix. As it progresses through the various odysseys, I think quite often of the things you have said here on this video. It lends a greater depth perspective to each character and the ordeals they are managing. I can't wait to reach back to the older episodes, especially those with you and your wife. Merry Christmas, 2020.
Great video, Dave! The negative people have no confidence in themselves! If they did, they would not have the time to criticize other people! I wish you and your family well!
Great video! I just finished watching season 4. You and Brooke really impressed me. You two work so well together, and the love you showed each other, even in such a hard situation, was perhaps the most inspirational part of the season for me. Best of luck with future endeavors!
Thanks for such a down to earth, real and totally gettable discussion on your Alone experience. I loved watching you two on your Alone, you built a great shelter and showed awesome teamwork. I really appreciated your highlighting the mental and emotional side of the whole process, and discussing the resilience needed and how to enjoy but persevere in Alone. Keep up the terrific work on both your channels, see ya!
Thank you for our video. I really enjoyed it. It reminded me of all the people who comment on police videos who have little to zero experience doing the job. Great insight! Keep up the good work!
I've never even seen this show Alone. I don't watch a lot of tv anymore, but this video makes me want to watch it now. People are always going to dismiss other's accomplishments to make themselves feel better. Great job lasting 7 weeks in the bush, sounds like a great adventure. Thank you for your insight and sharing your experience and knowledge.
@@Bushradical There is an ESPN show where they find people who made ridiculous, mean tweets about stuff like NFL combine performances or missed field goals and make them try to do better on camera. It is always hilarious. Someone should launch a kickstarter to make a show for making those critics and know it alls put up or shut up. I would totally watch that.
I know this is a 2 year old comment, but its just as relevant now as it was when it was made. I've seen some of the most insane comments imaginable made about season 9 and the participants involved. If the producers of Alone searched these people out and offered them a chance to do a season like this, it would be comedy gold. We obviously wouldn't get a 60-100+ day season, but it would be worth the shorter time just to give these keyboard warriors a chance to show everyone just how "godlike" their survival skills really are.
This was very informative. Thank you Dave. Even the experience of military life will not prepare you for the shock of being utterly alone. Military people are used to having their entire world turned upside down and still being expected to perform and get the job done. However, when we arrive in our new place we have all our teammates with us and all the equipment we could possibly want (well most of the time anyway). We are not alone. There are people with us we can depend on for our very lives. Outside of this being done to you over and over again, I don't believe any life experience could prepare you for that shock. I tip my hat to all of the participants. This is truly a one of a kind life experience.
It's easy to be an armchair critic, so thank you for sharing your rational thoughts and behind-the-scenes info about Alone. It really puts into context the contestants' actions and behaviour. I have only watched one season (Season 3), which I enjoyed immensely. I thought I had a pretty good understanding of why the various contestants behaved the way they did taking into consideration such things as personality, resourcefulness, imagination, physical fitness, mental fortitude etc, but your background insights add another dimension entirely.
Really enjoyed this. I am fascinated by the psychological component of what it takes to do this. You and Brooke were my choice to win because I thought you had an edge with the mental aspect of the challenge as a couple that appear to be on the same page. I thought the fighting that might go between people not used to be together 24/7 would be struggle that would be hard to over come. Thanks for sharing.
Dave, as someone who’s been in the woods a few times, I’ve enjoyed the show, knew there were things that didn’t make the cut, know that alone or lonely aren’t all that far apart, was proud of anyone who participated (regardless of time in the bush) and thought everyone of you are tougher than most of the people who didn’t go on the show. That said, I have never thought I could give any of you advice of what to do in that situation. You’ve got my thumbs up for doing what you did and ever season is good.
@@evanphan5904 brooke said at the beginning of season five that she just wanted to experience it by herself and she had some things she still wanted to challenge herself on. Not to speak for him but in case he doesn't get back to you.
I wish they would make a special release of each participant's journey, kind of like as if each person had their own whole season of Alone and then people who are interested can follow their favorite contestant in more detail. They already have all the footage.
@davewhipple: Dave, my husband and I moved from the city to "THE WOODS" almost 35 years ago. We have had many "visit". They all love it and want this life when they first get here but if they stay too long they get bored (more than a few days). I watch many prepper shows and hear many things we talked about when we first moved out in the woods, and when we tried those things it just wasn't for us ( cooking a turtle or utilizing the furs from animal for example). Thanks for your video, it made me really think what I have to work on before SHTF. I love your show and am so happy for you and Brooke that you have been able to help yourselves and others as well as make a living and share your life expereience with all of us.
Great insight. As someone who wants to go and live this type of lifestyle in general, the show has always appealed to my interest. I love the idea of getting an opportunity to experience all of these things and learn daily from nature, and still have a backup squad to help if you get into serious trouble. It's great to hear how a lot of you guys have kept in touch after the show experience is done. Thanks for great content as usual!
Dave I am a former Green Beret with the United States Army Loved your video. Most that say they can in actuality cannot Longest I have gone in the wild by myself is 7 days It does change you I think the thing mostpeople miss about that experience is the mental toll it takes on your body Love your vids
Thanks so much for sharing and you confirmed so many of my thoughts not to mention the fact that how it hits you being truly alone because as you indicate how many of us have truly been alone in the woods for days with only truly basic equipment. Very few is my guess. That was my thoughts of those that tapped out early who did not injure themselves they didn't really understand that part of the experience and shame on anyone shaming them.
I really really hope the wooded beardsman gets a go on alone. He has such awesome content and really puts maximum effort into his videos and experiences.
We love listening to you telling all about Alone . We love watching every show , only wish it was on a bit earlier in the evening for older folks . Love you and Brooke
Seriously thoroughly enjoyed your video. Very educational and informative. Eyes wide open, heads up on the future. You are the real deal. Respect and Honor. Salute
I really enjoyed your synopsis, your thoughts and your advice, Dave. I would love to test myself but at 71 it could not end so well. As I watch each episode and the physical and the emotional struggles are displayed I realize that it takes tremendous fortitude to overcome the struggles and survive. Skills are vital obviously but you have to extract that extra ounce of courage and will inside of you to succeed. I remember running the quarter mile, 440 yards, in high school and at the 350 yard mark I felt like just giving up. Something deep inside said to push harder. The feeling at the finish line is like no other..triumph just finishing the race. To win is glorious. Thank you, Dave! This was absolutely worth listening to and to take mental notes.
Those editors need to learn to use new footage! We don't like seeing the same scene before and then after the commercials. We'd much rather see a different scene.
Downeastwaves They do the same thing on a lot of reality shows. I don’t like it either and I feel like they are being cheap with the footage or production costs. Also a bit insulting that they are putting me through this little reminder of where we were before the commercials. I still love Alone, however.
We love the show as well. Just saying maybe they can be the reality show that makes the decision to NOT do the repeat scenes after the commercials. We are looking for more content! If they have hundreds of hours to choose from, make the change, step out of the box and give us more in the same time frame.
We noticed last night they did less repeats. Sad Brooke left but she did awesome! Great woman, glad that she got to hike the Mountain and experience Mongolia.
Absolutely love Alone, and loved this video. Its how I've always felt about this show from season 1, its great to have a participant share his thoughts.
I've been an active duty infantryman for 11 years. I've been a Ranger Instructor, I've put my body through torture, I know what it's like to be the coldest, wettest, and most exhausted you would think you could ever be. I've spent multiple trips into the mountains in washington with hardly nothing except some 550 cord, steel wire, firestarter, poncho, fishing line, etc. Just stuff to be able to set snares, start fires, catch fish, build shelters, stay as dry as possible, and just would go out and survive on my own just to do it. At first it became a thing just to get to my primitive side. Then it turned into really just wanting to prove it to yourself. Then it turned into something I just NEEDED to do. I've always watched things like naked and afraid, survivor man, alone, etc. and every time I watch them I always think to myself "Man, I want to do that so bad. Not to win, but to see how much I have in me.
1st off....thanks for your service. Have you tried applying to get on Alone? They are always looking for people...and contrary to what folks think.....its hard to find 10 of the right people for a season of Alone. Give it a shot
@@Bushradical thanks for the reply. I havent tried because I'm still in and highly doubt the Army would let me take that amount of time off (if I even make it that far) but I told my wife when I get out I'm going to. And that's good to know. I assumed people were lining up to try
You 2 are great learning alot from both you and Brook. I really want my grandchildren to watch and learn from your experiences . Thank you for all the info about alone. Yall were awesome , winners you are!!!
Really enjoyed every minute of this video Dave. I would love to try out for the show but thought that my lack of some bush-craft type skills would be a deal breaker. I need to brush up on a few things and maybe apply. It 's pretty exciting thinking about the challenge of it all and the life changing experience one could have. I’ve always loved being in nature...exploring, hiking, camping, and fishing. So much so that I moved into our cabin one year ago. I have been building things and creating our modern homestead in the mountains.
YES Dave! You really do a great job of summing it all up! . It's not necessary but I believe it is important for those watching to understand the depth and gravity of this experience. This is not your average tv show and how it effects those of us who did it is on going and very intense at times. It is much deeper and wildly more complex than any of us could have imagined. Thanks for taking the time to give people some insights.
Thanks Callie! I think it would be amazing to do a channel on just the contestants of Alone. There are so, so many untold stories to tell. You're spot on about the complexity of the whole thing....its such a unique experience, and impossible to do justice to an hour at a time for 10 episodes. P.S. I watched your Dragonfly video, fantastic tune. I also play the Baritone Ukulele......or were you playing a tenor guitar??? you all sounded awesome.
Wow that was a great video Dave! I have tons of respect for everyone who has been on Alone. I’m pretty positive I wouldn’t come close to winning that show. I did an experiment once just to see how long I could stay at a camp I had. I had food and water filtration so I knew I wasn’t going to be hungry or thirsty. It was just the sheer boredom that made me go back home after only three days. Thanks for all the detailed description of how it feels to be dropped. Best video yet!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 I’m going to share in all my groups🙂🙂
I liked your channel before I knew that you were on Alone. I don't watch a lot of stuff on T.V., so I haven't seen any of those at all, but I understand the idea. You said a lot of important things in this video, and people should really pay heed. The reality of being in the bush, doing actual survival training of any sort, is not something that can be commented on externally with a huge amount of merit; it is a personal experience, and it is a singular event unto itself. The most important thing that I learned on a 28 day survival course, besides the fact that I needed more skills, was that I'm pretty sure I can make it through almost anything if I focus on the moment, and find peace in myself and where I am at mentally. If I accept that, and then take the moment to think about what I can do to make things better, even incrementally, than I can achieve way more than I would otherwise imagine. I win. Not 500,000 or any money at all. What you win is greater than that. You win inner strength that can not be bought and sold. You have that, and it is obvious. I appreciate your honesty and your straight up way of explaining it, without really bashing the bashers.
Everybody is an armchair quarterback, it's just the nature of the beast. I enjoyed watching you and your wife on Alone. I'd never even heard of the show so thanks for letting me know about it. Now I've binge watched seasons 4-6 and am starting at season 1 now. haha
Love your channel Dave. Helps keep me sane when im feeling trapped in Metro Detroit. Hopeing to find a way to move near friends in the Tawas Mi area. Blessed to have work up there. So grateful for my innate desire to be in the woods. Besides the birth of my boys its the biggest thing that satisfies my soul. Thanks for everything Dave! You and the wifey are the best. Much love.
We got hooked on your youtube videos and just started watching Alone Season 4. In our biased opinion, you and Brooke should have won because you were a great dedicated team, knew all about surviving the wilderness and had a great attitude throughout! 😄👍
I think if brooke had not been so small, they would have. She’s the perfect size for her though. Love both y’all’s RUclips channels. (And I personally think they didn’t show y’all as much as the others as y’all do compliment each other so well, and are both so competent.)
I really love watching both of you. You two are very strong people. I like watching you build cabins. I enjoy watching her doing anything. She's a great teacher. I watch every second of y'all videos. I never get bored watching you two. While watching your videos, I talk to y'all cause it's so real, it's like I'm right there with both of you.
Absolutely - Great video Dave. I was very immersed as you brought us through each step. 30 minutes of TV Time / 30 minutes of staring at your feet. "The GEM." Wow!
Thanks a lot for your thoughts! And you are right, I thought a lot about how I could recreate circumstances like on the show, and the best thing I could come up with is a 4 week solo trekk in northern scandinavia. So I'm off to that in a couple off weeks :) Watching Brook and you out there was such a inspiration for my wife and I. Also your channel is awesome! :) Keep up the great work!!
The best thing I heard you say is how good the people are. Those who are contestants and those who make the show happen. All good down to earth people - that partly explains why so many of us like watching the show, but also is a great thing to know. TV, film and all that usually attracts a bunch of self-centered snobs and jerks. This is refreshing. Thanks for being such an open, honest guy, Dave. You are Brooke are both like that and I'm sure I'm not the only one who appreciates that. God bless.
Great video my friend. Gives me a whole new perspective and appreciation about the show. Perhaps in a future video you could brush on the actual life threatening conditions, animals, and such. Again, great info.
Wow, thanks for the informative explanation! You put your heart into it! Because of the self-filming format, Alone is the only reality show that this indoorsman will regularly watch. I got hooked on Survivorman years ago and am glad to hear that Les Stroud's show was an inspiration for Alone.
I'm not a survival expert but I took a ranch job out in New Mexico way back in the day. It was 75 miles to the closest loaf of bread to buy. I didn't see another person for weeks on end and I went 3 1/2 months without going to town. I never have been the same person after that. Long term isolation kinda sends a person down the rabbit hole. It lays all your flaws out on a table that you can't ignore.
I taught desert survival out of Capitol Reef National Park in Utah back in the 1990s. And part of the training for each staff was a week alone in the high desert, in winter. I can confirm that, when this is your first time experiencing solitude, it is life-changing. Some good, some bad. You definitely find out what you’re made of. We took clients out for 52-day straight sessions.
Your experience was your experience. You own that... no one else. It is not up to the bill randall's in the world to even voice an opinion about "your" experience. While it's fine to voice an opinion, no one wants to hear the "oh you should of" from some know it all. Thus the reason that a couple certain you tubers will "NEVER" be invited to be on Alone (even though in their mind, they think they deserve it) This is one reason I never judge anyone's experience on the show. I appreciate you sharing your perspective of "your" experience Dave. Now go shave that Alaskan face warmer you Hippie! lol... It's Summertime! lol... Cheers Rabbit!
I just discovered this show a few weeks ago and this was absolutely LOVELY! I'm a veteran, designer, and gamer who would love to be on this show but I realize my skills aren't anywhere where they need to be. I think the most valuable advice in this vid to other hopefuls such as myself is to test one's mettle out in the bush BEFORE they get on the show. Chances are if anyone reading this can survive a decent amount of time limited to Alone gear/requirements, they have a good shot if they also have a good attitude so the production staff and audience can root for them. Alone is just a way to display The Hero's Journey in a survival setting. You're a lovely person... thank you so much for making this video! :)
Alone has sparked my interest in just outdoor enjoyment in general. I have really enjoyed the show and finding your channel afterwards. My highest regards to all of the contestants!! Its sooo easy for people to sit back in their warm livingrooms with a big plate of food, watching the show and be judgmental on what SHOULD be done and what SHOULDN'T. I try to put myself into each contestants shoes and experience what they experience the best i can, even though i could never really come close to what you all felt. But each one of you had different locations, different set of circumstances..some of you had better fishing then others, some were closer to more predator threats then others and you all had to work with what you were given. I just wish more people would understand things like that instead of picking the contestants apart. I dont think of "alone" as a competition anymore, now i view it as little stories of some awsome people going out to find themselves and seeing what they can achieve on thier own personal levels. Of course i think all of us viewers have our favorites in each season. I think carleigh had the biggest impact on me, to see the heartbreak on her face after being pulled and then the disappointment of getting injured and having to leave...man that girl is tough as nails and deserves respect!! You all do! Congratulations for the once in a lifetime experience and sharing it with the world. Thank you.
OMG I have watched this video to the end, I can not agree more with your comments. I take off and head to the woods here in Maine for a week or so at a time. Staying within the laws for hunting and fishing, I need to pack in much more then you did. Ignore the NAY sayers and the “experts”. Keep up the great job on your channel now.
I really appreciate what you do and love the insight into the mindset of the shock when you first get out there. It changed my idea of what happens to the early tappers. great content man! keep it coming!
I wish they gave everyone a smaller monetary award. $50,000 for making it 50 days or something. It seems cruel to expect people to do it for nothing. They've given a lot to do this show.
The bottom line up front: 45:03. Thank you Dave, for sharing your thoughts and experiences. You have a real maturity that a lot of other "adults" seem to need to acquire. I really enjoy and appreciate your perspective and videos!
Thank you for sharing such valuable and insightful information. I'm a huge fan of "Girl in the woods" and that's how I got turned on to your channel. I love survival shows and personalities from Les Stroud to Dave Canterbury and others. I never knew about the initial Alone series until Season 4 I believe. I quit watching TV except for NGEO, Discovery, the survival shows...programs that were informative or I could learn something new or a skill I could work on and perfect. Now Alone is one of my favorite shows. However, one hour a week does not give justice to the contestants; the five or six minutes for each contestant during that hour doesn't give the viewer a full understanding of all the struggles, physical and emotional, that you guys endure. That gives the haters, the armchair quarterbacks and the "know-it-alls" fodder for their ignorant and unnecessary remarks. I have 61 years of hiking, camping experience on five continents and 99.9% of it lone wolf. However, I would never criticize contestants for erring due to misjudgment, loss of a valuable tool or experiencing an emotional breakdown. I know when my hike is going to end and I'll return to my wife, have a good meal and sleep in my comfortable bed at home. You contestants don't have that luxury...everything is uncertain when you are out in unfamiliar territory. You deal with your situation the best way you can. I was so pissed that haters made such stupid remarks about Nicole's situation with MS. That lady has more balls than the idiots who authored those low IQ comments. Damn, sorry, Dave. We humans have that inherent trait to wonder if we could survive with the knowledge, the skills and the tools we presently possess. I have ventured out thinking, yeah, I can do this; but we also have become creatures of comfort which affects our limitations.
Thanks A.W. I appreciate your view on the whole thing....Thanks for sticking up for Nichole. It must be a real piece of garbage to run down someone dealing with MS.
You, sir, are a great storyteller. Loved to hear what it's really like. I wanted more from the show and you answered my questions. Love you and Brooke. You are a great couple!
best video in a long time. thanks for giving us some insight. I realised a lot of hate against the participants and social media. it was really bad. history's youtube channel or fb site doesnt delete any of the awful comments tough
I was going to send this to you! I hope to see you on this show some day. You would be awesome.
Those are the people that everybody will encounter even in our daily lives, at work, school, public places and sometimes relatives or sometimes “friends”... my advice or opinion, just IGNORE them stay humble and just do what you love to do, WE, the good people are not here in this world to please them... and always remember there are more people who loves you and loves what you do... let’s just pray for them and hope that someday they will realize that they are not rock or superman... lol
PS: looking forward for more videos! Always take care and God bless!
I'm honored. Thanks for the sub!!!
Well done! 👍
I think this is the best post I've seen all day!!!!!
I would love to see a show with 10 of the best. With everyone staying together and join knowledge and skills. It would be amazing to see how they build their community.
Bushcraft Homestead, season 1 on History Channel. That’d be awesome to experience
Sir,,,, you have it going on. Your channel and your wife’s are an inspiration to me. I am a 73 old man that is need of something after losing my wife but I have found your Chanel I think it’s going to be good
Thanks Jimbo
Thanks Brother, I totally agree and I believe you.
@@Bushradical By the way, Howard Varty said to say "Hello".
Wow, thanks Rob. I appreciate that.
I have nothing but the utmost respect for any participant in the Alone series. Its always easy for people to criticize from the comfort of their homes but when you're out there, alone, cold, wet and hungry its difficult to make good decisions regardless of your experience. Thanks, Dave for the enlightening discussion.
Thanks Chuck. Very true about making decisions....your judgement always needs to be watched like a hawk.
Thanks J2!
Agreed 1000 percent!! You hit the nail on the head. This is a lovely comment, Jujitsu🤗👍😁
@@judyschepp8748 thank you
Dave, thanks for the well thought out, organized and interesting commentary.
That would be awesome...campfires and BS'n my favorite things
Thanks Kim
So glad you took a piece of the fireplace home with you. You guys were just great.
Thanks Cali!!!
First off David, thank you for your service. If you're ever in Fairbanks Alaska email me. I'll buy you a beer
Thanks. Good luck
Was so good that I didn't realize it was almost an hour long! Made me love and respect this couple even more!
Thanks
Ditto Sir.
Was really hoping one of you would try again though :)
Thanks for the videos !
I was rooting for you two the whole time. I personally have been out there, alone, for a long time. It is a great accomplishment to last a few days. Much less 30, 60, 90 days with a button that makes it go away. I highly respect you all.
Thank you Mike. I appreciate that.
Thanks!
Thanks! Good luck
I love the way you see the world... incisive, intelligent, compassionate. Thanks for telling it like you see it. You and Brooke are both mentors to us all and it makes me hopeful in these crazy times.
Thank you very much. I appreciate the comment.
Excellent video Dave. You put a lot of thought beforehand into the making of this video and chose your words very, very well. 👍
Thank you very much!
Thanks !
Glad you enjoyed it
I've never even seen this show Alone.
They should do a season of all the know-it-all keyboard warriors. Let them prove their genius
I would LOVE to see that
@@Bushradical There is an ESPN show where they find people who made ridiculous, mean tweets about stuff like NFL combine performances or missed field goals and make them try to do better on camera. It is always hilarious.
Someone should launch a kickstarter to make a show for making those critics and know it alls put up or shut up. I would totally watch that.
@@junahn1907 I soooooo want to see this for EVERY single show with contestants on TV now, great idea
Literally just came to the comment section to say this. 😂
Amazing commentary and emotionally moving explanation of the experience. Thank you very much Dave
Thanks
Dave, as someone who’s been in the woods a few times, I’ve enjoyed the show, knew there were things that didn’t make the cut, know that alone or lonely aren’t all that far apart, was proud of anyone who participated (regardless of time in the bush) and thought everyone of you are tougher than most of the people who didn’t go on the show. That said, I have never thought I could give any of you advice of what to do in that situation. You’ve got my thumbs up for doing what you did and ever season is good.
Thanks V&R! I appreciate that!
I really wanted you and Brooke to win and now she's on season 5! AWESOME!! I hope she does really well. Great video man!
Thanks
@@Bushradical Just curious and no disrespect- why was it Brooke and not you?
@@evanphan5904 brooke said at the beginning of season five that she just wanted to experience it by herself and she had some things she still wanted to challenge herself on. Not to speak for him but in case he doesn't get back to you.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing all these details with us.
You bet.
I give you all the credit in the world for your Alone experience! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. God Bless!!!!
I wish they would make a special release of each participant's journey, kind of like as if each person had their own whole season of Alone and then people who are interested can follow their favorite contestant in more detail.
They already have all the footage.
That would be cool
I just made a comment like that. I hope they atleast let the individual have his own footage. That would be great for grandkids
Bushradical I take it they didn’t yet
That's a great idea
Loved the wolves howling in the background on 29th minute. That was so cool.
Thanks. I wish I could clare that to be true but it was my neighbors sled dog team.
"claim" that to be true
@@Bushradical Oh cool you answered this. I was wondering if it was sirens lol like I'm used to in nasty NYC.
Thanks

Love your vids
Thanks so much for sharing and you confirmed so many of my thoughts not to mention the fact that how it hits you being truly alone because as you indicate how many of us have truly been alone in the woods for days with only truly basic equipment. Very few is my guess. That was my thoughts of those that tapped out early who did not injure themselves they didn't really understand that part of the experience and shame on anyone shaming them.
Nice thoughts, very level approach to everything.
Thanks
Its nice to see others that have channels watching others who post.
Like your channel too.

Thanks David!
Best breakdown of the show yet- and by someone who actually knows what’s going on with it for real! Love it and love the beard!
Thanks you my friend ......who Shall remain Anonymous...LOL.
Very eye opening - the editors should just do a web series featuring more of the footage - they could do well with that!
Yes, that would be awesome!!!!!
I think there is a lot more to being out there than what gets aired on the show, I respect every one of you. Thanks for sharing friend
Thanks !!
Here from season 7, the series is awesome, especially in this current world we live in, we should all tap out and move to some wilderness.
right on
No then there would be no wilderness
Thanks AW, I appreciate that you took the time to watch such a long video!!
Good point
We noticed last night they did less repeats. Sad Brooke left but she did awesome! Great woman, glad that she got to hike the Mountain and experience Mongolia.
The repeats tend to be of 'highlight' moments that they want to milk the most out of, like what did Dave see? Did his arrow find its mark?
Absolutely love Alone, and loved this video. Its how I've always felt about this show from season 1, its great to have a participant share his thoughts.
Thanks AA!
Thanks Shirley
Thanks Dave! Yeah it is a baritone Ukulele. You and brooke should come for a visit sometime and we can jam around the fire! :D
Absolutely. I imagine if you play the Baritone Uke, you also play the guitar , Correct? Either way, you sound great!
Best video yet!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 I’m going to share in all my groups🙂🙂
spider5001 well said Spider. I would be chasing the helcoptor begging them back.
Thanks Spider!
LOL
LOL...you are funny.... 3 DAYS?!! Ha..well you wouldn't be so bored spider if you had to chase down a little squirrel every day or so for dinner.
Now I've binge watched seasons 4-6 and am starting at season 1 now. haha
Is never heard of it either until Dave and Brooke mentioned it on their channels. lol
Much love.
Thanks Ryan. We appreciate it. I hope you get to get up by Tawas. Its a nice are up there. Best of luck my friend.
I love watching alone. One of my favorite shows.
Thanks G.W.!!!
Thanks a lot for your thoughts!
And you are right, I thought a lot about how I could recreate circumstances like on the show, and the best thing I could come up with is a 4 week solo trekk in northern scandinavia. So I'm off to that in a couple off weeks :)
Watching Brook and you out there was such a inspiration for my wife and I.
Also your channel is awesome! :)
Keep up the great work!!
Thanks RaubElch! Good luck on your solo trip.....get ahold of me when you get back. I can't wait to hear your thoughts on it!
Will do! I must confess that I'm a bit nervous, but that's just part of the deal.
@@RaubElch seeing this just now 3yrs later, and wondering how your trip went?
The best thing I heard you say is how good the people are. Those who are contestants and those who make the show happen. All good down to earth people - that partly explains why so many of us like watching the show, but also is a great thing to know. TV, film and all that usually attracts a bunch of self-centered snobs and jerks. This is refreshing. Thanks for being such an open, honest guy, Dave. You are Brooke are both like that and I'm sure I'm not the only one who appreciates that. God bless.
Thanks for the comment. There really were some amazing folks involved in that show, they should get more credit
Great video my friend. Gives me a whole new perspective and appreciation about the show. Perhaps in a future video you could brush on the actual life threatening conditions, animals, and such. Again, great info.
Thanks ...will do.
Wow, thanks for the informative explanation! You put your heart into it! Because of the self-filming format, Alone is the only reality show that this indoorsman will regularly watch. I got hooked on Survivorman years ago and am glad to hear that Les Stroud's show was an inspiration for Alone.
Thanks for the comment Stephen. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Excellent! What I like about your channel - straight forward common sense. 👍🏻
Thanks James
Dave, we decided to go back in time and view one of your oldie, but goodie videos. God bless you and your family. ❤
Great video with a perspective from someone who has been there. Sharing information that we don't get from watching the program. Thank you so much.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love Less also, he needs to not be. Butt heart he is the GodFather of alone., great job and keep up the good work Mr. Radical. 👍🏻
I bet that was an amazing trip. 52 days is a long time to out in the bush
Your experience was your experience. You own that... no one else. It is not up to the bill randall's in the world
to even voice an opinion about "your" experience. While it's fine to voice an opinion, no one wants to hear the
"oh you should of" from some know it all. Thus the reason that a couple certain you tubers will "NEVER" be
invited to be on Alone (even though in their mind, they think they deserve it) This is one reason I never
judge anyone's experience on the show. I appreciate you sharing your perspective of "your" experience Dave.
Now go shave that Alaskan face warmer you Hippie! lol... It's Summertime! lol... Cheers Rabbit!
I have a feeling mr. Randal has some real problems of his own.
...."Ya Hippie" .....I love it!
Great video. I couldn't have said it better.
Thanks Dave, I wish everyone on the show had the outlet to talk about their experience.....it would be so interesting.
Thank you.
Thanks Robert.
Thanks MR! I appreciate that.
I appreciate that!
Thanks Mary.
