    Holy crap, Dave... I've been just astonished at what you and Brooke can do with all your off-grid cabin stuff and you're, like, hold my beer... watch us go 7 weeks minimalist hardcore survival in brutal deep bush north Vancouver Island. Currently binging Season 1 Alone. I think after that I'm going break with what I normally do with a TV series (systematically watch every season) and jump straight to Season 4 so I can watch you guys do your thing. Just watched the clip of you and Brooke reuniting in Season 4 after your 9 day (?) compass hike. Haven't cried in decades but honestly have to admit that got me a little misty-eyed...lol
    Whenever the pandemic lockdown/restrictions/whatever gets me down, I just put on some BushRadical or Girl In the Woods and it's like a big slap in the face...lol. Brings me right down. It's hugely motivational. It's like, these guys are out there in the woods doing THAT and I'm here getting crabby about a litte pandemic cabin fever? Big thumbs up and thanks for everything you guys do. Huge respect. :)

    Awesome stories Dave!
    One of my rules: if you are alone in the dangerous area and your headlamp is broken or something like that and it is a really black night (no moon etc.) you have to stay, where you are, and wait for the morning sun. You don't want to walk in the dark and break your leg on a root or fall off a rock. Just be patient and wait for the better moment to walk. But I really haven't used this rule yet, because I always take a spare flashlight.
    Take care everybody!

    Thanks Dave, you are a natural story teller! My dad and I went on a mountain hike in winter in the Lake District of England, we were in a party of 4 and the two other guys decided that they did not want to ascend Scafell, the highest peak, as darkness was not too far away. So we made a plan and agreed a route they should take to get down into the local village where there was a hostel. Dad and I forged on and darkness was soon upon us so we removed our pack and aimed to retrieve our flashlights only to find they were in our companions' packs. Long Story Short...there was no Moon, low clouds smothered the peak and we decided to spend the night on the snowy peak as we were aware there were some sheer cliffs ahead. Now unpacking a tent and erecting it in the pitch dark is not something I ever wish to do again, at best we scrabbled in the dark and created a rough bivvi to keep snow and wind off us. The snow had some weird pin prick luminous specks in it...I never knew what they were and have never seen them again. Daylight revealed we were a few yards from the precipice! We made our way down into the valley to be met by the local SARS (Search and Rescue Team) who were happy to see us safe...naturally we made a handsome donation to them for their inconvenience! Just amazed how those Hickory knots beat up your good old Hudson Bay Knife :)

    Dave, awesome story about the knife. I had a similar experience when i was deer hunting in Utah back in the 80s... i walked out of the camp trailer in the middle of the night and lost my bearings in the darkness when my flashlight died. i had to wait about 15 minutes for my eye to focus enough to see the outline of the trailer to get back and it wasn't more then 30 feet from me. I have so much respect for what you and your wife went threw on your season of Alone. i usually take a summer vacation and go fishing and camping alone, so i can relate to how quite it can get. i have had it so quiet that the only thing you can hear is your own breathing. it changes your perspective on life. granted i am only out there 6-9 days tops. i can only imagine being alone for 60-90 days. and then adding in the lack of food on top of that just seems unreal to me. my next trip i am going to have to try it with just 10 items and not taking food with me, just so i can get a better grasp the experience you all went threw. i have a decent set of outdoor skills, so i defiantly want to try it. i doubt i could make it much more that a few days, but i really want to try it, just for the experience of it. I would love to hear more of this kind of stories from Alone participants.

    I often find that when looking for something you remember having in your hand and not being able to find it, is to take a break, sit and have a coffee or whatever, read a paper, just anything to take your mind off it. When you do that, you tend to find it very quickly after the break.

    My dad logged on Vancouver Island, he called hemlock tomcat wood because when you would burn it, it created a smell like a tom cat had marked his territory. When new guys would come into camp he would put a piece on the fire and pretty soon the guys would be checking out their bedding and stuff to see where the cat had peed. It would be neat if the show would let you go through the material and make a video about your time from your perspective. Thanks for sharing.

    You and Brooke are the real winners. You both have all the skills for what it takes to survive. Just thinking of that mansion and it's fireplace you built... nobody got anywhere near that accomplished.
    It's just such a pity the food supplies ran out.
    Having said that, I spose having all the skills are nullified if there is no food source. Brooke was hurting my heart everytime I saw her towards the end.
    Just noticed that coffee pot over your left shoulder, that is defo the one you took with you... right?

    Great stories! Thanks for sharing them - I enjoyed hearing them.
    I have a story I hope you appreciate:
    A few years ago, my cousin and I left our deer camp at night to go to an abandoned hunting cabin about a mile from our camp.
    Why? Because.
    Being the "supreme outdoorsman" we are, we decided that one small flashlight was good enough because "we won't get lost." Wrong!
    Our goal was to find the cabin without using the aforementioned flashlight. We started out on a path that we traveled on too many times to count, and because of how dark the night was we got twisted around so bad, that we eventually had no idea where we were.
    Eventually, I gave in to using the flashlight and our trek to the cabin ended when, while trying to find out where the hell we were, my light found a set of glowing eyes checking us out. I asked my cousin if he saw the same thing as I did, and he said "yep, time to go." There was no need to be hanging around with coyotes in the area without weapons or a fire to back us up.
    We eventually made our way back to deer camp, but not without a lot of mis-taken steps off of non-existent trails.
    It's amazing how easy it is to get lost in pitch black even if you think you know where you're going.

    Hi Dave, awesome to hear more of what actually happened! To sum up my opinion "wow bud, and I thought you had it hard just watching the show on tv" which led me to believe that they should give out a "he went above and beyond" award to people like you, Rock On! Even more respect for team Whipple Okay, back to the show, lol, one thing I'd like to point out is that I noticed that some of it is in luck of location as well, and you and Brooke's location in season 4 is a good example, having that open area to build in was a godsend for sure, and still close to the coast for fishing, very fortunate I'd say in my simple opinion bud. As for the current season in Mongolia, wow, what a chaotic season, half my favorites down fast almost out of the gate, heartbreaking to say the least, but back to the new location, I see it as tougher in some ways, easier in others, still a total pain in the ass lol. I was sorry to see Brooke tap this season, but when I saw her shelter, my first thought was "she's gonna move or upgrade, that's not gonna cut it for her" and it turned out to be true in a way, but I love what she did and I'm proud that a part time Michigander Rocked On again on Alone! Two thumbs up to you and Brooke and two middle fingers up to those that thumb down this video, love both of your channels bud, Rock On!!!

    these personal struggles that bring you closer to the people on the show is what I wish they would portray more...not like the crap they are putting on it now. Very much enjoyed, and I know what you mean about those rechargeable batteries
    My job was an inspector , and back in the day we used regular D-cell battery type flashlights and as you stated batteries get low they get dim, well they let us buy rechargeable lights, don’t get me wrong they were great, very bright compared to the others but the first time you are out at a job and the place your at is pitch dark without the light , you learn to take a backup , been there done that, thanks for the share and the info for others to think about

    Regarding your knife and headlamp story... I have a Petzl rechargeable headlamp that does much the same thing. It'll flash a few times before it goes out, as a warning, but you have to really pay attention! After a couple of times of the "oh crap, now what?" situations, I went and bought a spare battery-pack for it. Unfortunately for you guys, that wasn't an option!

      Hey Sherma, I'm not asking you to change your mind....just consider a few things....We are made up of the same stuff you find on the periodic table of elements......we are swimming in life everywhere on earth, but we know of ZERO life besides our own planet......All the industry and technology of the entire world COMBINED cannot "manufacture" one single functioning ant. .......To think all of this just happened requires way more faith than I have ever had. BUT, for thousands of years every civilization on earth has known there is a "great spirit" that created us all. The Bible records this being interacting with certain people throughout history. You can believe anything you'd like, but you'll never find hope, peace, or reason without God. Thats my take on things. Thanks

    • @Bushradical
      @Bushradical  6 лет назад +8

      OK, lets be frank with each other. You took time to write a comment on my video because someone mentioned God. It pissed you off, or at least thats how it looks. Something triggered you to respond. We don't know each other, but it appears to me, that you have a chip on your shoulder about God, or people talking about God. That came from somewhere....I don't know where, but you do. Maybe you had a bad experience with someone who talked about God but was real Dosh-bag. I don't know. All I know is I believe 100% That God is real. Ive seen way too much to think otherwise. I don't know what your story is, but I bet there is one. God is straight up ......people can be full of shit....dont shut out the idea of God because of something or someone that left a bad taste in your mouth.

    Great story about the knife hunt and the head-light! I last Saturday we were camping at Carr Fork Lake in Kentucky. I woke up just before 4:am and decided to get in some fishing, I took only my tacklebox and fishing pole. I walked across the campground and then a large lighted parking lot to a long walking path that went to the lake. As I got near the beach I heard some banging and thumping coming from the path ahead... about 200 yards... in the dark. I was still wearing my head-lamp ($1.00 Walmart style). I saw only the reflection from eyes. Then the hair on the back of my neck stood up as I realized those eyes were both forward facing and kinda far apart. I shouted hey! Get outta here! ...then it stood up, and I was looking at a black bear about 7 feet tall! I shouted, rattled my tackle box and raised my arms as high as I could... he just stood there like " I see you, and I don't care..." I veered off the path and fished the beach until daylight, with my head on a swivel! I caught 2 big catfish and went back to camp. No camera, I did take my wifes tablet back and got some photos. I have some classic pics of the paw prints and sweeping claws! I shared pics with a ranger and told him about the bear sighting.

    I never realized how big river otter are till just a few months ago. I see them fairly often in the water just 30 second walk out my door, and they will come up within 5 to 10 feet of me. But I had never seen one out of the water till just recently. Dang it was huge! I did get a pretty good scare from a beaver though. I was in an inflatable kayak, within eye sight of my house, photographing wildlife (egrets, heron, deer, etc.). About 1/8th mile away from me I notice a wake in the water coming toward me. It kept coming directly toward me, the closer it got I was starting to think "this thing is going to bite my boat and sink me, or bit me!" It got within 3 feet of my kayak and turned and swam around me. I took photos of it but by that time my hands were shaking so much thinking it was going to attack me that all the photos were just a blur. I have since walked across it's dam to get to a part of my back yard that is otherwise only accessible by boat. The beaver here are pretty used to me by now and usually don't even slap their tails. Though at night they still sometimes do; my buddy swears it's Sasquatch throwing rocks at us :>
    When watching Alone I have thought about what skills I have that would help me if I was out there, which I wouldn't even consider because I lack in so many skills, and I've had frostbite in my toes so suspect my feet would make me tap. But I think I could handle the starvation better than most because I due to poverty and being homeless a few times, I have starved more times than I care to count, one time getting down to 105 lbs. So not eating for a week or more is something I've experienced before, and it's not uncommon for me to go 2 or 3 days without eating even when I have food.
    I like walking in the dark. It's something I've done since I was a kid, and still do. The only time I ever got scared was right on the northern border of Bohemian Grove (where presidents and other politicians go to practice satanic rituals and stuff). It was pitch black and all of a sudden I heard hoofs all around me, within feet of me. I was just hoping it was deer and not wild pigs. I just kept walking. I still don't know for sure but I kind of assume it was deer since they didn't gore me and eat me. I still go for late night walks every single night. Just recently I started carrying a red flashlight. I was out for a walk and I could sense I was being stalked by something. No idea what it was, I never even heard anything.. but you know when you've lived in the wilderness enough years you "know" when you're being stalked without seeing or hearing it. So now I carry a red flashlight and use it to scan around for eye shine, then turn it back off. I like the red light because it doesn't blow my eyes out so when I turn it back off my night vision still works.
    The other "skill" I have, if you can call it a skill (or maybe it's a mental disorder), that seems to cause quite a few of the Alone participants to tap is craving companionship. I have spent most my life alone, sometimes not seeing another human for months at a time. I "prefer" to be alone, and I am quite self entertaining. People annoy me, and I dislike having to talk.. I can easily go several months without speaking, and have done so many times in my life. Even still now I only see humans twice a month for quick grocery runs. If I had a refrigerator I could cut that back to once a month, or even every other month, because I really dislike having to go to town.
    Oops... I rambled... again :>

    • @Bushradical
      @Bushradical  6 лет назад +3

      Hey Duck! Thats some kind of crazy story!! I also like to walk at night but the "Hooves" thing would kill all the joy of walking in the dark !!LOL Its crazy to hear you got to 105.....thats way too thin for almost anyone! I know whats thats like form starving back in 2010 when I went to the Mayo clinic to get my small intestines chopped and spliced.

    • @DFDuck55
      @DFDuck55 6 лет назад +4

      105 isn't all that unreasonable for me. I was 105 lbs through most of high school, and was 135 lbs till I turned 50 and gained another 15 lbs. I'm just a little guy :>

      @@TheWestlandgirl: I used to post videos to youtube but deleted them all the end of 2017. Because I was getting 2 or 3 scam copyright claims on every video for music I wrote, performed, and recorded myself, and even copyright claims on my speaking voice. I never had many followers on my channel, and the really odd thing is I got more subscribers after I deleted everything than I had when posting videos. Go figure :> I wish I had the video equipment I have now back when I was young enough to be adventurous. I explored abandoned mines, mining ghost towns, and Native American caves since I was young in the late 1950s, but have no photos or video to prove it. Now I have cameras, but not the energy or strength to get to those places.

    I’ve always wanted to hear more about what everyone goes through and does, all of the scenes we don’t get to see. Thank you for that. Couple questions:
    1. How hard was the land navigation? Did they really just give you an azimuth and let you go? No updates to get people back on track? I like land nav and it seemed like such a challenge in that environment.
    2. Was there ever a time out exploring where you would almost lose your way back to your shelter (man that would be tough)
    3. If there’s a non-disclosure or you’re sworn to secrecy no worries, but if not what is the weekly stipend or pay that contestants get?
    Thanks!

      We all got paid $1500 / week. As for the land it was the hardest travel ive ever done without question. The country was trail-less, super thick, brushy, steep, wet, and totally broken. Most nights it took 20 minutes or more just to find a spot to lay down.

      Bushradical thanks for the reply. I’m seriously considering trying out for the show. All the people I’ve seen seem like really good folks and it would be a community I would want to be a part of. It feels like the military and other places I’ve been, in the sense that unless you’ve lived it you really don’t fully understand what it’s like. And more importantly it gives people that common bond of having been through that hardship and coming out the other side of it more enlightened. Hope to meet ya one day when I make it!

    Recently purchased the first serious on RUclips and my wife and I have been watching couple episodes every night really enjoying the program fun to start from the beginning.
    Have a couple questions about the show, I don't know if these are things you can answer or not confidentiality and all that.
    First, how did Lucas have so many tarps in the first season? Every time they go back to him he seems to have another tarp.
    Second, do they come out and collect the footage every few days and give you fresh batteries for your cameras how exactly does that work?
    Third, did they give you a region that you're supposed to stay inside of or could you hike from the beach up to a mountain lake or some other location?
    Fourth, are there rules about the trees that you can cut down and the game that you can catch or kill?
    Fifth, how does one go about paying their bills while they're out on the show did they give you a stipend to cover your monthly expenses while you're gone?
    Sixth, What are the requirements regarding your health and weight, what keeps an obese person from signing up building a Shelter by a creek and sitting there and fasting for 7 months?
    I really like the video clip of you and your wife playing checkers in your cabin, it really made me chuckle it was such an Alaskan moment.

    • @Bushradical
      @Bushradical  6 лет назад +8

      Hey Hans, you do get a stipend, lucas brought his gear inside his shelter and used the tarps intended for camera gear, nobody in their right mind hikes very far on Vancouver island, there is no weight cute off, and as for health...if you have a valid prescription you have to take, you can take it with you. I have Asthma and I took an inhaler with me for example. You have to follow game regulations. Thanks for the questions.
