- An update on the record-breaking lake effect snow event downwind of Lakes Erie and Ontario with 73.9" official measurement of snow at Hamburg, NY! Aerial perspective of the lake effect snow plume with snow shafts and cloud seeding from mid-level clouds is provided. A discussion of compaction and melting of the lowest layers of a snow pack is included. Never stop chasing SNOW!
🤣The most snow I have ever seen here in the southern half of the UK was about 10 inches in about 2009. The country ground to a standstill. You get 77 inches and you still clear the roads.
I studied abroad at Reading University. Great place
@@ReedTimmerWx Small world.I actually live quite near Reading. I live in Camberley, in a straight line it's only about 12 miles away.
I can't imagine that amount of snow.
Not out of the ordinary here, living in the area is not for everyone.
IF only the U.S could send that weather too someone that is more used too that type of weather.. nordic countries. Send it all over too us as a.. early christmas-gift ;)
@@Jorgen87 New yorkers are use to this amount of snow, especially up-state new yorkers. I live in new york but can walk to the Canada border. We get very cold winters, Weeks and weeks of -20F weather.
I lived in Hamburg NY in the blizzard of 1977. And it was 100 inches or more
❄️🐻❄️❄️
@Spiritual Arborist I think measuring properly was impossible in '77 since all the snow was blown around by the horrible blizzard winds. Some open areas were swept clean while nearby drifts could be 10, 20 or even 30+ feet high.
Most of that snow didn't fall during the storm, experts said there was maybe only a foot of fresh snow. Instead the 2+ foot deep snowpack on frozen Lake Erie blew into the area. That lake is larger than the state of Vermont, so it was a hellacious amount of snow!
You can believe anything you want.
I lived through it,and just looked it up.
My comment still stands.. 🙂
@@Boni-vw9ld I believe you, because I *know* it was that deep in some places. Heck, whole houses were buried! I remember hearing about a snowmobile driver who hit the top of a chimney because he didn't realize he was riding over a house. 😱
All I wanted to say was that measuring it the normal way wasn't possible since most of the snow came in sideways, picked up off Lake Erie by the wind. It got deepest wherever it hit something to drift against, like trees, houses, fences, etc. So residential areas could accumulate a lot of snow and farm fields were largely empty.
Depth of snow aside, there was a big difference in density. People are wading through this current snow, but in '77 you couldn't really do that. The blizzard winds packed it so tight that it was hard like concrete. In vast areas of that snow you didn't sink in, not even to your ankles really, it was almost as if you were standing on solid ground. Anybody who doubts this can google photos of the blizzard of 77 and see for yourself. You can tell how high up people were by what they were standing next to: street lights, houses, traffic signs, telephone poles, looking down on the roofs of cars, etc.
The lights are still on! That's a blessing!
And you KNOW you're just loving it...
I can’t lie to you I sure did
@@ReedTimmerWx you're lucky I would love to be in that kind of weather but I'm in Tucson Arizona
No hope for me if I lived there. I am only 64 inches tall. I will still stay in montana, where we do get snow, cold, and high winds.
If you have an elderly neighbour or people who are at risk, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to see if they are ok. If you are able and not in any danger yourself.
Nice to see someone thinking of others. Rare, these days. That you.
We have phone numbers of everyone on street. Most of us text too. Much warmer that way.
No
Good evening Reed, Thank you for sharing this incredibly amazing experience with everyone.
Good evening Cynthia! Never stop chasing
@@ReedTimmerWx The melted snow will have to go somewhere, hopefully it won't flood too much, right? While I enjoy watching a few other storm chasers, you're my number one favorite. Legend.
Reed is the true definition of an extreme meteorologist ! From chasing tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms everything else in between. He is definitely the best there is out there.
Extreme for extreme a win win!!!🙏
Extremely false. I can still see car tires.
Holy cow if you are not chest deep in water from a hurricane you are chest deep in snow 😲 Crazy but love the very through coverage y'all do for us ❤
Well snow is just crystallized water so technically you are chest Deep in water
@@wildlifewarrior2670 actually probably about 6 inches of water
He's always on his knees or scooting around on his but. Weather men are liars just like their coworkers in the studio behind the cameras...
Yet thecars you can see the tires and plates
..... almost like he isn't up to his chest.. just in a snow pile.
Beautiful snow and weather
Aerial footage was incredible!
Thank you so much Dr. Timer. Please stay safe. Praying for you 💗🙏
Wasn't this guy just in Florida hurricane Ian?
Yes that was me
@@ReedTimmerWx crazy man
Yeah, he's a weather junkie.
Goes to show, if you catch a wave just right, you can ride a surfboard all the way to Hamburg
He is kinda amazing!! When he shows up around town - you know shyt is about to hit the fan!
I am so sad that I couldn't get that way to finally meet you! I am about 25 minutes away from Hamburg...couldn't get there because of the driving ban. My daughter in Hamburg ended up with 70+ inches. Still digging out up there. Great coverage Reed!
Thank you for respecting the driving ban. I wish more people did as it would make the clean up much easier. But as always, people do what they want and ignore what is best and end up creating lots of problems for others.
Holy Snow! I live in Florida, never seen anything like this.
I live in Northern Illinois and haven't seen anything like this either.😰
@@sherisworld8552 Wow!
Thank God we live in Florida!
Yes, indeed, but we still have to dodge hurricanes though!
Great coverage Reed, I fully appreciate your coverage of snow ❄️ winter 🥶 as well as hurricanes and tornadoes 🌪️.
Well done 👍
Thank you Reed for the courage it takes to get out in that insane weather! The beast chasing the beast! Huge fan, never stop chasing!
I can tell by your smile at the beginning your enjoying this historic capture !!! You stay safe Man oh man that’s something 😳
Spot on Predictions. Incredible on site, up to date Storm Coverage. Epic Footage. Reed, 🏆YOU Rock like no other !!!
❄🌨🎥🌊🌧🎥🌪⛈🎥
Dr. Timmer's commentary combined with state of the art technology make this a weather enthusiast's dream. I've been a weather nut ever since I went through hurricane Donna in Miami in 1960 at age six. I wish I could give this video two thumbs up and Reed a hearty high five✋ Thank you sir!
This was an exciting chase, awesome footage and the kindness you showed to others was beautiful. Thanks for taking us with you. Never Stop Chasing!!
Thank you Reed for braving the weather for all to see the snow.
Wow now that's snow.
He did good a s good deeds of service. Amen 🙏
P.S. Someone taught him good as a child.
From kansas back in the 60s and 70s we always had snow all winter long today we don't get much anymore.
Watched you every second I could. Really great coverage. Thank you so much, Reed!
You sir! are a legend! outstanding work sir!
Reed your dedication and enthusiam are awesome to witness. Thank you for many years of impressive footage!
Excellent and extreme coverage, Dr. Timmer! I enjoyed the live stream and the videos, as always!
From Michigan, glad we didn't get that much! Wow, I can't imagine!
Great coverage reed thanx for everything you do…
I’m from Ottawa, Canada and never dreamed of that much snow lol.
Wow!!! that’s some great footage👍 love the sky view👏👏 keep up good work
Happy early Christmas! All the best from Phuket Thailand
Thank you for coming to my town, appreciate you!
Your content is always top notch Reed! Just pure domination!
Wish I was snowed in like this right now.Makes for the best Rest'Relaxation& Recovery and Hot Drinks 😎❄️
Reed: Great images and analysis. Thank you for this. You're a brave and determined man.
I bet there's some beautiful photo opportunities there.. and the still and quiet is magical, no doubt.
I'm just wondering, though.. where will all of that water go, once the snow starts melting?
I live in Southeast NC, and we rarely get snow, and if we do, it's usually gone by next day. I'm originally from the NE ( NY and MA), and I miss my blizzards! Fall and winter are my favorite seasons. Sigh.
All the water in lake Erie is being pushed up to the new York area causing low lake levels in the shippj g lanes and Gale force winds . This should hit the record books.
Awesome content Reed! Obscene amounts of snow. The flight footage was absolutely mesmerizing. Be safe out there ✌🏼
Thanks for taking us on the ride!
Nice work Reed.. keep'em coming buddy..👍✌️
Amazing work as usual Reed. I saw them play part of this video on the weather channel! Awesome!!!
This reminds me of the Blizzard of 78 in Connecticut. We got so much snow that roofs collapsed all across the state including the Hartford Civic center.
Thank you, Dr Timmer, for showing us what a historic snow event looks like.
I am so glad you made it through this and Ian -Maybe I won’t see you again until spring in South Dakota… or next week lol ❤ stay safe
Great documentation!
Great video, thanks. Loved the aerial footage
Excellent coverage. Incredible
My goodness! You're tall! That height of snow is stunning the amount hard to fathom!
Thank you reed for getting out in that mess man God bless the family's who lost love ones stay safe my friend
Been watching you for a while. Got me hooked back in with those intense Ian streams. Florida is my second home but ny is my home. I wanna start doing this. I've had a passion for weather forever. I get stuck watching all day everyday a major event happens. Keep Killin it and thanks for the inspiration man🤘
Start with the NWS storm spotter training and after January look up United States Storm Intercept Team.
Thanks for demonstrating proper scientific method ;-) I'm just studying up before we get our first (measly 20cm) snow of the season here in St. John's. Stay safe!
Glad to have one genuine expert in the 🌏 - thanks Reed!!!
Love your coverage Reed, fans from Indiana! ❤
That's an amazing view from the plane!!
The official amount will always differ from an arbitrary depth on location. The official method is to measure per hour, wipe the slate and measure again an hour later, etc. Cumulative depth will never be has high as the official total because of settling and compaction.
It’s very beautiful in Hamburg NY . Very peaceful place to live and own property . If you have a chance to check out Angola by the Lake . Be safe out there. Most Residents that live there prepare for this .
@Phillip Banes I’m in California , High crime , shootings ,murder , helicopters constantly with high speed chases . Also pedophile capital. Most of them are homeless. And then there is the homeless problem . High rent , home invasions …
Amazing footage above the clouds. ⛅
The western New York winters are exactly why we moved last September. looks like we got out just in time.😂
Nice job. The footage from the plane was a nice ending. You are amassing quite a legacy.
Yes!...that visual was such a great "capper" to your excellent coverage of this bizarre event!..You, sir, are the best!
Dominator Airlines. 😂 Keep up the great weather coverage Reed! Stay safe! 👊🏼❄️
Appreciate what you do man, I’m a weather junkie myself I like to think. Had the best honey moon ever in Maine couple years back. Big snow storm

I’m a Okie like Reed! We have some snow, but I’ve never seen Anything like this!! Thanhs for sharing!!!
The view from the plane is epic!
That is an incredible video
Great job like always .Greetings from your biggest fan from Bosnia :)
Sweet coverage from the aerial view.👏👏👏👏👏 Bet your having the time of your life.. thank You Reed. I went back to the 40hr live feed it was gone. 😕 That was the best watching things get covered so fast. Stay safe and warm. How long are you going to stay ?

Amazing!!!😊
That's insane
Amazing footage 👍
I just watched Reed's eyes freeze shut in real-time!! 🥶
This guy is legendary. Been watching him off and on since the science Channel days.
This is absolutely insane! We had cold temps and snow flurries last week and I was upset. I am ashamed of myself 😢 My heart goes out to everyone dealing with this! 🙏❤️
No wonder your name is Karen
What may seem to others as a cataclysmic event of catastrophic proportions, people in Hamburg, NY call a typical Wednesday. The weather in this town would make anyone from Alaska or Arctic Canada blush. Put it this way, Hamburg has the National Guard on speed dial.
IN 1989 I WAS LIVING ON HILTON HEAD ISLAND AND CHRISTMAS FELL ON MONDAY. SATURDAY MORNING I WOKE UP TOO 17° AND 11 BELOW WINDSHIELD FACTORY TO 9 INCHES OF SNOW ❄️🌨️❄️ AND IT STILL COMMING DOWN!! SUNDAY MORNING IT FELL TO 28 HELLO WIND CHILL FACTOR WOW 😳😳 . MY FIRST WHITE CHRISTMAS ⛄⛄🎄🎄 . I LOVE ♥️♥️ IT. O YEAH I WORKED FOR DELTA AIRLINES ✈️✈️✈️✈️ AT SAVANNAH AIRPORT AND WE GOT 4 DAYS OFF PAID YEAH 👍👍👍👍 !!!!! THE BEST CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY I EVER HAD!!!
Reed you had The Very Best Coverage of The Storm during The Lake Effect Emergency throughout The Buffalo Areas!!!
Great footage! I would have liked to see the thunder snow phenomenon footage because it doesn’t occur very often.
You have it set to premiere tomorrow at 9:30 sir. Not tonight.
Yes he was anywhere is going to be bad weather this guy is there thank you so much Reed for what you do
Got to say , glad I'm not there ! I plow the roads in NJ. A. 2 foot snow it tough . 5 or more is unthinkable
Crazy how he doesn’t even shiver. Doesn’t seem like he’s that cold. He loves any type of weather. Lives and loves for his job.
That’s what coffee does!
He has plenty of clothes on and it was just a bit below freezing. No shivering required.
It's just below freezing. Relatively warm around these parts.
❄️Honestly when your bundled up in good winter gear it keeps you warm, and what’s weird is when it’s cold out and then snows, it actually feels warmer, I used to be outside a lot in blizzards and would never be cold, maybe my hands and face but everything else was warm, but that’s why he isn’t shivering because you can tell he has appropriate clothing on ❄️
@@TD_JR That isnt warm.
Wow your so lucky to have all that snow! i wish we got all that here!
Glad its on your side! -Colorado
fantastic footage
I’ll tell you what those people up there are a hardy bunch and are ready to handle whatever comes their way!!
Cumulus Congestus sounds like what I was suffering from last week. :) great stuff Reed.
Aerial footage was awesome
Epic footage. I feel like I could almost walk on those snow-clouds..
It’s frightening really 😢 I hope everyone is safe 🙏
bro was absolutely smashing that snow
Reed officially the snowfall in Orchard Park (where the Buffalo Bills football stadium is located) was recorded at 77 inches with more snow (up to 10-15 inches) expected. Hamburg is not that far from Orchard Park and they are expecting additional snowfall. This is not the usual lake effect snowfall for Western New York - ten to 20 inches is the normal lake effect snowfall with high winds and blizzard like conditions. The Buffalo/Niagara airport was closed and there was concern how the Buffalo Bills would get to Detroit because the ball players had to get to the airport. Remember we are "the city of good neighbors" and whatever it took to get the football players to the airport it was done - some players had extreme difficulty just getting out of their homes and to the street but with the help of their neighbors they eventually got to their meeting facilities and then bussed to the airport but now they have to come back with additional snow expected this evening and who knows what will be the status of the airport. They could possibly land at Niagara Falls Airport and then bus to Buffalo (Niagara had a lot of snow but our mains are all open). Just thinking of these guys after all they have been through having to go home and clear out their driveways and sidewalks. Buffalo/Niagara Falls was hit with a blizzard lake effect storm in 1976/7 which paralyzed the entire area and the Federal government and New York State government sent the national guard and their equipment in to the area to help clear the snow accumulation which by my memory with snow so high it was 10 feet higher than the 4-wheeler my company sent to pick me up to take me to work (I was considered an essential worker) and driving down the road the snowbanks had to be up to ten feet higher than the top of the four wheeler and you felt like you were driving down a tunnel. the Federal Government and New York State Government declared a state of emergency for all of Western New York and the blizzard like conditions continued for a full week. If I recall correctly, we also had a major fire during the blizzard and with the snow, wind, and below freezing conditions the water froze as soon as it left the hoses. We all survived that blizzard of 1976 and the next year we had a smaller blizzard of 1977. The people of Western New York are a hearty people and we have learned how to deal with blizzard like conditions and return to normal within a few days because we have learned how to deal with these lake effect blizzard like conditions over the years. This year the lake effect came earlier than expected but we still prepared but we did not expect this amount of snowfall and wind drifting. We will be up and running as normal in two to three days.
I think this would be amazing! Though I realize it is dangerous and hard for some elderly get food , especially since this was unexpected. But I would love to see it like this just once in my lifetime! Sending prayers for everyone in that area ❤❤❤
It was expected, actually. We had several days warning. But yes, checking on elderly neighbors is a decent thing to do.
Reminds me of my childhood grew up outside Buffalo Jamestown NY in FLA now
The National Football League (NFL) is over 102 years old, and each week, some record-breaking event is documented! Amazing!
This run off will be great for Lake Erie water levels once it thaws
Holy that's crazy. Hope everyone stays safe.
Great video Reed I lived thru the blizzard of 78 but this is much worse --- Debbie
Kinda crazy. Lived in Alaska for awhile and it was absolutely gorgeous but was glad to come back to Texas - although I was a screaming mad woman that winter of 2021 with no power or water. Love watching the snow still as long as I’m snuggled up and don’t have to deal with it.
This is my home, went to hamburg high. We enjoy a good snowfall just make sure to knock it off your roof to be safe!
