Back in the seventies, my husband who was a resident in Anesthesia, requested to have a rotation in a certain area of this country which is known for high incidence of a rare untoward response to anesthetics . He was assigned to this remote place during the worst winter. Despite this, he kept coming home every so often to check on his family.I bought him a very heavy car phone so he could call for help in case of an emergency on the road. There were no cell phones then ( just heavy plug in phones). I put winter blankets, pedialyte in thermos bottle as well as plain water to drink ( also in thermos bottle) and in an igloo container, sandwiches and non perishable food to tide him over a long wait for help in case of an accident. On his way back to the hospital, his car spun then plunged unto a shallow ditch.. He was unharmed but shaken. It it took six hours before help came. He was grateful for the blanket and supplies and the thought and love that accompanied those " supplies". I am reminded of this because we decided that harsh winters are not for us. We love Buffalo NY with its wonderful people and being so close to Canada but for everyday in the winter, we don't want to be tested on our survival skills.
My parents still talk about the blizzard of 77. They had driven up from NC to Carthage, NY, to visit my mom's family after I was born. When they found out about the storm coming, they obviously had to leave early. My dad said that it was so cold in the car despite the heater running full blast that my bottles were freezing in the diaper bag (it was sitting in the floor board).
@WXChasing and just think, a camera will pick up visuals better than the naked eye, during bad weather. So I can imagine how frightful it must have been
I would be a nervous wreck! Never could I fight the winters like I did when I was younger. I grew up in Michigan. I do not miss the snow. Praying for you NY! Stay safe! Stay inside!
Funny enough my part of NYS only received rain and some brief snow and freezing rain. No snow forecasted at all for at least the next 7 days, just freezing temps and sunny.
I’m here in Alabama with 15 degrees and beautiful outside. County and City offices closed yesterday just because of temperature. We would never make it in that ! Prayers of safety to everyone dealing with that storm!🙏🏻
There was a blizzard in Alabama and the other surrounding states in 1993.......Sure, not as severe as this, but Alabama received a lot of snow with blizzard like condition high winds....
Sweet Home Alabama! I am a Northman and I couldn't tolerate the heat that you folks get in the summer, but more power to you all if you can handle it, and all the bugs.
Here in the U.K everything comes to a halt if there's an inch of snow. I hate to think how we would be if we had weather like the USA is having right now. Please stay safe people.🇬🇧
I remember a trip driving from Buffalo to Corry, PA in a Buffalo whiteout. I will never forget that trip. I have never been so scared in all my life. Almost drove off the road because I could barely see the road. Ultimately followed behind a truck and exited the highway and sat in a hotel lobby for hours before I could get back on the road again. I was heading to Corry for my job!
I live in Buffalo and am safe in my house. Thanks for posting the video. It's interesting to see what's going on out there. It's been non-stop snow and wind.
Wow. And then I'm thinking who in their right mind goes out in conditions like? followed by feeling sorry for the first responders who have to go rescue people.
News flash genius: we have more people in the area than cars you see. Fair to assume these people needed (aghast!) to be out for various reasons. And, first responders are paid to be prepared to do the job…whatever that may be…for whatever reason. Judge somewhere else
We lived just north of Buffalo for over 2 decades. In 2014 there was a bad blizzard and 5-7 feet of snow in areas south of the city. It's a deadly situation and should be taken seriously. If you get stranded on the expressway, you can die waiting for help. This is an awesome video. Take care, Buffalo and south towns. Hope the worst is over.
I hope this is helpful. If you get stuck in the snow, use your floor mats. The bottom has studs and it gives the tires traction. This video reminds me when I was stranded in Alaska when it was -35° F with a wind chill of -72°F
I just recently moved back to Buffalo after being in Atlanta for 14 years and I haven't seen a storm this bad since the October storm in 2006. I pray everyone stay safe and warm. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🥰🥰
The storm came incredibly fast. In Canada, yesterday morning it was raining, which melted all of the current snow, and I kid you not, an hour later it started snowing and high winds. Didn't look as crazy as this though, but please people, be safe and stay home!
yeah Thank God I'd already had all the ingredients for Christmas dinner bought...though by about the end of the 4th day of not being able to leave the house I was beginning to get cabin fever LOL...thankfully the power held out at my house throughout the whole thing...I was working at Whole Foods at the time and one of my co-workers lost his niece in that 😞
They think they are immune, it can't happen to them. At least that's my opinion. As comedian Ron White has said, "You can't fix stupid." Lord knows I've tried, but I finally gave up.
Very important to carry an emergency heater with you. Our weather is milder in this part of NYS (no snow) but I’m still carrying propane and my Big Buddy heater with me in case I’m stranded
Keep a candle in your car. It will give off enough heat to keep you from freezing. If you get stranded, open a window just a crack so that if you get completely encased you can still get some air.
@@Heinrich99 Off the wagon and in this weather sled. Currier Express and then later the Buffalo Evening News. Collecting was harder than delivering. Some people got wet paper sorry about that.
I'm just a few miles north of this, with minimal snow. I still see grass. It is the WIND (with gusts pushing 70mph) that make this treacherous. Then any snow creates drifts, and it's just a mess. I live on a normally busy road and the traffic has been way down. Hearing about trees in roadways all over. Power outages. There are travel bans in place, but some folks still have to get to work. Hopefully folks arent out for the fun of it adding to the burden but i am sure they are. I see in local chats that they will do what they want, and not be told what to do (a lot of reds in this area) and that driving conditions are no big deal. Meh. Just stay home if you can. In a few days it will be back to 40s/50
Unless it’s an emergency why would anyone be out under these conditions?? These types of storms do not happen everyday. It will subside. Stay sheltered until it passes. For your safety and the safety of others. And if you HAVE an EMERGENCY ‼️ and HAVE to be out, God bless you with safe travels.
Always take more winter gear than you need, I carry a sleeping bag in my trunk with a small emergency kit, I could make it for a week or more if I had to. Used to travel a lot on I 70, Utah Wyoming border area. Blizzards like this were common every winter, (7,000 ft Red Desert). Picked up a gal already into hypothermia once, running down the medium in office clothes. She couldn't talk all she could do was shudder, we had to tackle her and force her into the car. My wife held her down to keep her from jumping out and I drove to the hospital. She had come to her senses by the time we got there, (we were about a half an hour out), and she turned out to be fine.
Great advice, I said the same to my Nephew who was wearing a t-shirt to drive somewhere in the cold at night. He just laughed at me and said my car has a heater.
Wrong.... Lake Erie no longer freezes over... we have lake effect snow all winter now. Warmer lake has a greater ability to evaporate... then is snows once over land.
@@Niagara716 That video sure doesn't fit the description of a little wind and a little snow , but each of us names our own poison . Merry Christmas 🎅 and Happy New Year .
Looks like it's pretty bad on the west side of Michigan. Here in SE Mich it's brutally cold with the wind but we are spared much of the lake effect snow that the western half knows and endures. I went to visit my Owl yesterday and it was all I could do to spend 90 seconds hooting at him before I went back to the car. The bird is tougher than I am.
In Toledo, we have sub zero, high winds, some blowing snow. Roads extremely slick. Travel possible but 5min in the weather could kill you. Not alot of snow but still very close to being snowed in.
I'm just a little north of you in monroe county Michigan, and its the possibility of losing power that scares me! Been eating my xmas cookies, soup and some cocktails to stay warm, thats my suggestion to get through this weather lol!
I live near Chicago and the last few days have been terrifying. Have lived here my entire life so I know the weather very well but I've never seen anything like this storm. It was so cold and with that hurricane wind i thought for sure my power would go out and I would freeze to death. I actually feared for my life. This storm is strengthening instead of growing weaker and that is scary! Now it's very powerful, even more so than when it was here and it looks like NY is getting hit hard. Will be praying for you all. Stay warm and safe, everyone. 🙏
Here in W.V. one inch of ice and covered by another inch of snow ....... the wind is unusually strong along with the temperature unusually low. Praying we don't loose 🙏 power and freeze to death. HAPPY holidays everyone .....❤🥶
Also near Chicago. The wind-chill has been unreal, but working the night shift I saw NOTHING like these white-outs. Must have dodged the bullet, narrowly.
@@nahbro3240bro you can’t beat weather. Some people have to drive and get killed by the storm. Some people have trees hit their house etc. some can’t afford generators or are homeless and die.
Oh my god, that is really awesome. I have never seen such a heavy snow storm here in Germany. We have a green christmas as every year with temperatures in the 50ies and in some parts 60ies Farenheit. I wish all citizens who live in that Blizzard zone in USA a safe and warm Merry Christmas. Also for the poor lonesome homeless people that no one will die. Take care of you. Warmest greetings from Germany to all of you. Carsten
@@afenismama Merry Christmas to you. I hope that the worst is gone now and the temperature is rising. But i guess Buffalo is well prepared because very low temperatures with heavy snow fall is not so unusual for you. Right?
I promise you I have. The two winter storms in the winter 1978/79 in Northern Germany were just as hard as what you see here as to what concerns intensity of snowfall, storm, and temperature. Can you imagine the North Sea covered with ice, or the roads on the isle of Sylt buried under up to five metres of snow in - 25°C? Snow plow going through, and it took fifteen minutes for the wind to blow up one and a half metre again, or snow blown up in the leeway of buildings up to the second floor? I was there back then, and I'll never forget that...
@@andeekaydot yes i can remember that winter in 78/79 but that was a real 1 time scenario. I was a child but never been again after that blizzard like weather nearly 45 years ago i had such a winter horror. And where i lived that time it was not so heavy as it was in the northern parts of Germany.
Southeast Ohio is finally up to -10. It was so cold yesterday we had to pretty much barricade ourselves in to keep the cold out. I think it got to -33 last night. Prayers for all 🙏🙏🙏
With all the technology nowadays giving advanced warnings of imminent storm, its crazy how many people still get stuck on the road. I cant remember a snow storm that was talked about for 10 days before it hit on national news, local, everywhere
I just had to call in for the second day. It is Christmas Day and even our Christmas masses were cancelled. The most amazing thing was that we never lost power! I thought I was living in a nightmare. 7 foot drift blocking front door. The wind howling for three days straight!

I'm in Buffalo suburbs - 11 degrees, feels like -10. our windows and doors are completely covered with snow and ice. 3feet snow currently with high drifts, expecting another 1-2 feet and what is the worst is the nonstop 30-40 mile an hour winds for 1 day with day 2 of the same coming. its crazy here and yes Global warming seems ridiculous to me. Global warming is showing in extreme weather. While the north of america freezes over we have a nice 62 f / 17 c in europe when it should be 23 f / -5 c. I dont judge or care if its natural changing or man made. Fact is the weather is definitly going more extreme every year. I live in the suburbs of Chicago. Im used to the cold and the snow. I’m man enough to say I don’t think I could hack buffalo winters. It’s different. And every person I’ve met from buffalo has just been an awesome human. Anecdotal, but there has to be something about suffering through nature that just grounds you…
I live on the Gulf Coast and tied myself to a tree during a cat 4 hurricane in 100 degree heat with alligators flying by, and I had to swat them and the mosquitos at the same time as tree branches impaled my arms and legs and fire ants ate my feet. When it passed, I waxed up the board and went surfing. I'm incrediblly grounded man. lol
I also came from the Chicago suburbs and now live in balmy Thailand. When growing up there in the sixties we would have gigantic snow storms that would be 4 to 5 feet close the schools for a couple of days but the wind there is terrible and makes it very bad for humans and animals who are outside. May no person or animal die because of the nature of this storm. May all be safe and not venture out in it!
Ahh, memories of growing up in WNY. There's nothing like being on the Thruway and not knowing what lane you're in. Or such heavy snow ya' can't see the tail lights of the guy ahead of you.
I don't live in Buffalo, but most of we northern New Yorkers got a taste of this with strong winds, downed trees and loss of electricity. Poor Buffalo.
Why the Heck are so many people out in this? (I know your storm chasing) the gen public in minivans. It is just stupid the whole country knew this was coming, and no excuse for putting themselves and first responders at risk. Trucks on the road, people getting stuck.
I bet 90% of them are the idiots that tailgate, roll through stop signs, get tickets all of the time (which is always from over aggressive police), etc
Xmas time. Tomorrow I have a short drive to meet my family… normally 20min. If weather bad, I think 40min. Will see… my state doesn’t look anything like this, just icy road, no more blowing snow.
It's crazy. Here in the UK, I went outside just now, it's evening here, and I couldn't even see my breath, it's that mild. Hope you're all staying safe, and have a good end of year celebration and new year's. Take care.

I have never been so scared in all my life. Almost drove off the road because I could barely see

hours before I could get back on the road again. I was heading to Corry for my job!

How is it now in Buffalo?

As a Clevelander, i can say Buffalo blizzards are intense. Same Lake shake n bake!
Wow. And then I'm thinking who in their right mind goes out in conditions like? followed by feeling sorry for the first responders who have to go rescue people.
Poor truckers
First responders are stuck all over the metro.

This is a weather bomb. They didn’t have time to “chose”. It when from all clear to this in minutes.
I remember that storm that dumped a lot of snow...didn't realize it was that long ago...I thought it was much earlier.
I hope this is helpful. If you get stuck in the snow, use your floor mats. The bottom has studs and it gives the tires traction. This video reminds me when I was stranded in Alaska when it was -35° F with a wind chill of -72°F
That's cold!!!!!

They think they are immune, it can't happen to them. At least that's my opinion. As comedian Ron White has said, "You can't fix stupid." Lord knows I've tried, but I finally gave up.
I concur, truckers and 4 wheelers could freeze to death, hope their diesel fuel didn’t gel up!!

The main reason we get snow in buffalo is cause of the lake. If the lake is warmer with wind going acorss it, you get huge dumps of snow

Lake Erie no longer freezes over... we have lake effect snow all winter now.

Michigan used to have weather like this a lot. We’ve actually been fortunate for more calm winters in recent years.

I hope everyone can stay safe and warm. I pity any humans and critters who have to be outdoors in this.
I don’t know how people live through these kind of storms.
OMG, that is truly life threatening conditions.
And the bosses still expecting people to go to work.
Just coming out of our blizzard here in MI.
Hoping you all to the east of us, get through this safely and quickly.
We finished ours about 10pm last night. Sucked having to work and commute via back roads in the blizzard because of corporate greed wont close the store even though not enough people came into work nor customers. Waste of time and shows their ack of empathy or care for their employees well being.
You folks are so lucky to actually enjoy a winter climate. Meanwhile, it’s a sunny 70 degrees here in Southern California on Christmas Eve. 😢
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I live in Buffalo NY.And I've never seen anything like this before
You & your family stay safe 🙏🏾
@@ThaMayorva757 Thank you😘
I rescheduled my Instacart delivery for Monday and may move it to Tuesday. No need to put others in danger. Even Amazon has delayed their deliveries for this mess.
Now that’s what I call a real snow storm not like the other wussy stuff that normally gets posted lol
I love being Canadian!
