In my opinion Steve ashiem is the Dave Lombardo of death metal, and if it wasn't for him modern death metal drumming would be very different and no where near as brutal, technical and fast, he is such an overlooked and underated drummer, he is the number one drummer of all the original death metal drummers.
I'm not sure whether it's because of his passion for firearms or whether it's just coincidence that he sounds like it, but when I'm listening to Steve's drumming while I'm listening to the Order of Ennead cd he sounds like an MG42 machine gun

I really enjoyed the santola and Owen era of DEICIDE, but I think this is the best line up since the days when the Hoffman brothers were happy to go on stage and play ( before they turned into drama queens) I saw the very last show with the Hoffman brothers in DEICIDE,it was on the scars of the crucifix tour in England, when they had just moved to earache records,the atmosphere on stage was terrible, you could see the tension between the brothers and Glenn and Steve ashiem in particular,I know Glenn can be a twat sometimes, and I know Steve was the peace keeper of the band, the fact is that Steve and Glenn had been carrying the Hoffman's for many years. When jack Owen and Dave Suzuki filled in on the scars tour the atmosphere was so upbeat and energetic,I never thought I'd say this, but I'm glad the Hoffman's got the boot, deicide are much better for it.
I would kill to have seem them back in the early 90s. No death metal band to this day have been able to touch the level of Deicide in their prime. That is the pinnacle of death metal. I miss the body armor and B.C. Rich guitars. These new guys are good players but look like dorks.

I love the the early 1950s style bass Glenn is playing . Completely changed the feel of the music .
He used to play a Rickenbacker bass. The bridge pickup blocked the bridge hand position so you would be forced to pick at the neck pickup.
