    My wife and I recently got our first pair of piggies and kind of went in blind even though we've always wanted them. Your channel has been so insightful and we both thank you for what you do! It’s been 7 months since I got my 2 piggies and they are only now starting to trust me. I usually don’t have much patience but I was able to wait for them and give them the time they needed and with the extra help of your videos they are finally warming up with me. So I just want to thank you for teaching me most of what I know now and teaching me how to understand them better. You helped me a lot ❤️❤️

    You are amazing. My husband and I have never owned guinea pigs but we fell in love when an exotic rescue was featured in Pets Smart one day. We went for a routine cat and hamster supply run and there they were **shout out to Forgotten Kingdom** I picked up Moose and fell in love but they said you can't take just her you have to take her cage mate too. So we happily did. Moose died within 2 weeks of bringing her and Pepper home... 😭 So we contacted them with urgency to find our Pepper a friend. They had a piggie rescued that has never lived with a cage mate... It's been hard. Poor Ms. Mess had some bites from Pepper on her bum but not ears, neck, our feet. They have healed and occasionally she has a new bite on her bum. Ms. Mess doesn't really **I feel** understand guinea interaction. She is the submissive but still fights Pepper sometimes. She is our diva and has allergies. Only shavings will do otherwise she looses her hair. We had Pepper trained to use a pellet litter box but took it out when we got Ms. Mess. I'm happy, frustrated and love my piggies. Ms. Mess is very interactive with us because I think she has had only humans. Pepper is sweet but hard to catch. How do I make these two piggies from different worlds friends?

    Great video and it is so important to understand that it takes time! I adopt my piggies from a local shelter and I got them both about 2.5 years ago. The one didn't take long to trust me, but the other one, it has taken 2 years!!!! He's finally letting me pick him up, coming up to me, and relaxing when I hold him. Adopting from a shelter - you never know what their previous owners did to them.

    While not ideal to keep a single reet-rat, they can have a good life as long as there is someone around almost constantly to interact with it. Kids, stay at home adults, retirees, just as long as the reet-rat isn't isolated. And if you have 2 or more, it's a good idea to have separation walls either in place or ready to be if the reets start fighting. A separation wall or barrier (like a square of C and C caging) allows the reets to see and smell and talk to each other without getting close enough to hurt each other. This also tends to make them friendlier to each other when given together/floor time after being separated.

Bela still hold back, but she loves lap time and exploring. Picking them up palm up has really really helped. I'm no longer a bird of prey attacking from above but it is taking Bela more time to get over my mistake. Everytime I open the fridge now, Amaya is screaming at me. So hard not to get a leaf of lettuce out or slice of cucumber as I'm grabbing the milk. They learn so quick.

    Thank you so much for this, it really helped me! I've had my piggies for almost a year now, and they are still pretty jumpy (but that could partially be because they are outdoor pigs, only because my house is tiny).
    However, they do do this weird thing where I go to collect them for lap time and they are absolutely terrified of me, but when they go on my lap they lay down and vibrate very quickly and I'm not sure why.
    You seriously should hear them when I they smell me cutting grass outside though, they go absolutely mental with the squeaking. Muffin (The pig on my profile pic) is by far the loudest of the three >.

    Hi Sarah! Great vid, your herd is so cute.
    Just lately the more skittish of our two boys has started resisting being picked up less, which is great. The older boy just sort of relaxes into it like he really likes the cuddles...right up until he remembers that snacks are part of the cuddle routine and he starts trying to nibble my fingers. Sort of 'hey, I let you catch and cuddle me, now pay up.' 🤣 I think the younger one might be catching on to the scheme too. 😆

    I have 8 piggies now in a large cage. My oldest and most experienced piggie, Mia, has become a teacher for the others. Our relationship is to the point that 9 times out of 10 when I am in the cage for any reason she approaches and "kisses" my hand. I can stroke her neck and under her chin and she laps it up. The other piggies watch and have become less stressed with me over time. I do pay attention to body language as each piggie is different. I can now rub the top of my Oreo's head and rub my Cookies chin. I use a cuddle sack to pick them up. Its funny to see them line up at it when its floor time.... It just takes time and patience.

I thought she'd be happy with the 10 square foot cage we have, but she's just gotten more reclusive. In the small cage she was happy to cuddle, but now she just hides and never comes out except to eat and drink. I'm worried about her. I think she's so used to small spaces that she doesn't /want/ to live like a proper guinea pig.

    • @SqueakDreams
      @SqueakDreams  3 года назад +1

      Try persisting with laptime, maybe take two out at the same time, to a quite area of the house away from the cage, you could hand feed some veggies and stroke them gently if they'll let you. Have a blanket for them to snuggle in. Sometimes even when pigs are super fidgety at first, after 5 minutes or so they settle down. And in the cage try and get them used to you stroking them when you feed them veggies and they are too busy eating to run 😄 Patience, persistence and trying different things will eventually work 😀

      Ah this sounds a bit like my Phoebe! And you're right it could have something to do with him being a skinny pig. But also because you haven't had him that long and so he's still wary of you when you get close. I think laptime can help with this, you can try learn where he doesn't mind (or hopefully likes) being touched - maybe along his nose or behind his ears, look out for him pulling a relaxed face or even laying down when you stroke him to know that he likes it. In the cage can be tricky though and will probably just take time, I've had Phoebe 14 months and she will still run away when I go to pet her, some pigs are just so flighty!

      Haha, not usually something people have a problem with, but I would recommend making sure they never run out of nice fresh good quality hay to eat, and giving them their pellets and vegetables at the same time each day - they'll learn the routine and, for example, won't expect to be fed in the morning if they always get it in the evening or vice versa :)

      I’m also a first time guinea pig owner. I’ve owned mine for 7 months and i’ve learned a lot. A few things I found help is 1. Wait for them. By this I mean wait for them to warm up and come to you, don’t force them to get used to you because it usually pushes them more away from you. 2. Watch them play and just go on about their day for you to learn their personality and behavior types. It really helps. 3. Males are more territorial, they need more space and usually won’t want to cuddle with you while females are more friendly to humans. (keep in mind all guinea pigs are different so you could get a friendly male or a anti-social female. It really depends on the piggies itself.) Doing these things will help you learn about your piggies individually which will help you tame them in the way they will actually learn :)
