The fact that Jack Black is the only one with a shred of commitment to the role, a role acting as a robot fundamentally designed to annoy you personally, is hilariously so perfect for the movie. The worst part about this is that the film originally had a good script written by the man who wrote the excellent Chernobyl mini-series on HBO. 5:37 to add onto this brilliant point, if he cared so much about how hard his staff worked, maybe he shouldn’t have put impossible deadlines in them. This movie doesn’t look visually bad, it looks unfinished and he’s a majority of the reason why.
What's honestly crazy to me is how a movie like Godzilla Minus One, a movie made on a $10-15 million dollar budget, made about $115.8 million dollars worldwide. Meanwhile a movie like Borderlands is struggling to get past $10 million dollars opening weekend with a $110-120 million dollar budget, and probably won't get anywhere near close to the amount of revenue worldwide compared to the Godzilla movie when all said and done. The contrast is just insane to me.
I watched minus one just last night, some spots were a bit rough and it's a pretty simple movie but you could see it was made with genuine intent and that they tried to squeeze every last dollar out of that budget. So, it hits just right and there isn't all that much Godzilla in it so it's a good watch even for those that aren't fans.
If you remove the payment for the actors from the budget, both budgets probably aren't that far apart. The actors for Borderlands just phoned it in, while the actors for Godzilla Minus One actually did a good job. The writers and director for Borderlands didn't give a sh**, while the writers and director for Godzilla Minus One actually cared about the franchise. I think that the Borderlands movie is more comparable to the 1998 Godzilla movie with Matthew Broderick. That film also isn't good in the slightest and basically craps over the source material, but atleast the acting is decent and the effects are (for the time) somewhat spectacular, which back then was enough to make it a massive success. Of course it also helped that back in the late 1990s there wasn't that overabundance of blockbuster movies like we have today.

If I feel bad at all, it's for Tiny Tina's actress because she's not exactly famous AND reportedly she's an actual fan of the games, so imagine being tied to what is now considered to be the bastard child of the franchise. And like Charlie said, her options were "stick with this terrible thing" or "walk away and don't get paid and maybe get blacklisted".
I mean she did an interview were she said she decided to take the character in a totally different direction and used Harlequin as inspiration for Tiny Tina.... not sure I believe she's a fan
@@maddoryxite That's a good point. If she couldn't play Tiny Tina from what she knows of the source material, then she probably dabbled in the game at best.
That being said, this isn't a bad idea if you're not familiar with the basics. But it depends on which era's Harley Quinn. Modern may be a better fit, but I think the pre-modern psychological profile would have been more interesting.
@@tasa4904 I'm not saying there's no version of Tina that could resemble some version of Harley Quinn, but honestly even that feels like a stretch for me. I get inspiration is a funny thing, but why is the source material not your core inspiration for the character you're playing? Why did your talk with the actress that played the character in three games end with you deciding to do something totally different? When it comes to game films and shows, time and again fans have shown they want true-to-source, so when an actor is talking about being inspired by a totally separate character, I think that's a concern at least.
@@maddoryxite Not disagreeing. Spanning across more than 3 titles in the series, I thought Tina was fleshed out enough that you didn't need to look at an outside source for inspiration. To do so isn't filling in the blanks, it's suggesting that you find fault with the original character...

Bl3 had a pretty good endgame after its dlcs and patches.

They basically did what Dragonball Evolution did, not caring about source material, and just wanting an easy paycheck
To be fair I don't think it's possible to make a live adaptation of Dragon Ball. It rarely makes sense for anime because of story length and visual style. Tbh I think it's bad even when Japan does live action anime adaptations.
@@Kai...999 Thats your opinion tho, a lot of animes got very good japanese live actions really well made because they know their shit. The moment netflix touches japanese stuff it turns to a pile of shit instantly tho
@@Kai...999 there are some cases like in Dragon Ball but some anime got some really good live action adaptation.
For example Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part 4 and (in my opinion, because most people dislike it) Death Note.
@@justacasualbirdlover3376You have so much faith in netflix that you dismiss them as the main cause of trash?
@@Kai...999 one of the only successful live action adaptations was one piece and that was because oda was there to shoot down every bad idea Netflix producers had including a love triangle in the crew. Even garp being there was because the Netflix producers wore oda down and got him to green like including garp which is one of the things people say should have been save for season 2.
I think it all comes down to people thinking they know better than the source material and if no one has the power and influence to stop them then it’s going to ruin the adaptation
Eli Roth worked on borderlands. He also worked on the uncharted film. Last time i checked he's working on a metal gear movie. We're fucked
oh no, woof
Eli Roth is a terrible director
Thanks for the heads up, metal gear is one of my favorite games.
Uncharted has the same producer (Avi Arad), but Eli Roth had nothing to do with it lmao
Oh god, he's going after my Metal Gear, too?
Somebody stop this psychopath.
It also doesnt help that the Borderlands movie is competing with Deadpool & Wolverine which is the most hyped movie for 2024.

If I recall they’re making 4 million on a budget of 115 million that’s absolutely horrible. They’re nowhere close to breaking even. They’re making nothing off this. Edit: Roughly 400-500 million.
And that means more layoffs.
That’s embarrassing 💀
and they'll keep doing it anyways
Sad part is that only the people at the bottom of the totempole are gonna hurt from this.
@@thediabolicalraisin8953to be fair, if they made money, that'd also mean more layoffs.
Even IGN, the company that practically gets paid off to give overly positive reviews to works that don't deserve it, gave it a 3/10. That should tell you everything.

Like most CEO's when speaking to anyone who can make their words public nowadays, he stuck to the script prepared for a shareholder meeting. That's the only audience these words could possibly make sense for.
I think I realized the issue a lot of these old directors don’t realize. When they hear video game they don’t think anywhere on their mind that it could have an actual storyline. They probably think games are dumb and made for kids and that’s why they keep not even looking at the source material. That

This is the big problem with a lot of adaptations of Games. Pretty sure one of the big reasons that the Halo TV show failed is because they never touched the games much less the books for the series.

Pretty sure they spent 98% of the budget on big-name elderly actors & forgot to spend it on an actual movie and marketing.
Given that they tried for almost a decades with various scripts and couldn't decide, I would guess their sunk cost fallacy decided the old stupidity of "hey, let's get big name actors in to hide the fact we have fuck all else".
Because that always works....
Honestly that’s how a lot of movies go these days. Half the budget goes to big name actors, another quarter goes to the horrible directors, writers, and other important titles, the remaining quarter is what’s left for the people who actually try to make the movie happen
Old actors refuse to let new people into the light. The all near geriatrics need to retire
I think this was a move made out of desperation. The BL games have run into diminishing returns and they rushed out a movie for some quick cash. I'm thinking Gearbox is doing poorly now. Obviously just speculation on my part, but why else would they put out this movie, now? There's been rumors of a Borderlands movie ever since the first one did well, so why else would they suddenly accept putting out a movie this bad?
@@drd675 i highly doubt these people were fighting tooth and nail for the role. i more so think they were literally the only peopled offered the role and were made it out to seem like an extremely easy paycheck and minimal work, thus what we were left with.

It's heartbreaking for me because borderlands is one of my favorite video game franchise ever. I used to play BL2 local coop with a friend for countless hours. Never had any contact with him for the last couple of years and he suddenly asked me to watch the movie together. I'll still watch the movie because of that. At the very least this movie would hopefully reignite our friendship.

5:37 to add onto this brilliant point, if he cared so much about how hard his staff worked, maybe he shouldn’t have put impossible deadlines in them. This movie doesn’t look visually bad, it looks unfinished and he’s a majority of the reason why.
the movie was in works for like 7 years
What's honestly crazy to me is how a movie like Godzilla Minus One, a movie made on a $10-15 million dollar budget, made about $115.8 million dollars worldwide.
So, it hits just right and there isn't all that much Godzilla in it so it's a good watch even for those that aren't fans.
how they even reached above 100k is beyond me.
Hollywood and the loong nose people controlling it Gotta Go.
3:58 is when the truth is spoken, I will say it again and always: unless they are going to use the original games voice actors I don't want to see it
