I went back and played 25th Anniversary and Judgement Rites. It's still a wonderful game. I really wish there were more TOS games that continued this genre. Although I did like DS9: Harbinger, most other Star Trek games were not good and went downhill. I got the Star Trek online lifetime membership pre-order and played it for a bit, but it got boring quickly and it's been years since I logged in. It doesn't seem that we will get another Star Trek game this entertaining any time soon.
If you want an easy way to beat the space-battles, you can set the Enterprise's speed to reverse, which really throws the AI in terms of how to lead a target and fight.
On the music front, it *is* actually very faithful to the source material too. The in-game music are all .mid renditions of actual motifs and themes from episodes of the show, with particular focus on the music heard in episodes like Amok Time, The Corbomite Maneuver, and The Doomsday Machine. The use of this music too enhances the overall authenticity of the game.
To be honest I think the game pulled me in so much that I didn’t even remember the music because I was busy being entertained. But good to know it was certainly there and good!
I recognised a few tunes that sounded familiar, but didn't know that most are renditions of original material. Then again I'm not exactly a huge trekkie having seen only a few series and few movies of the franchise.
I played this game to death as a kid. Space battles become 100% easier if you bring the ship to a stop by reducing engine power to zero. It shouldn't work but it's practically a cheat code. I have watched several videos about this game and it is never mentioned, but I swear it works.
Interplay made some good Star Trek games. I played this back in the 90s. When I got my iphone 3gs back in 2011, I jailbroke it to see if I could get dos/windows on it and play this game, I did but the phone wasn't powerful enough to do all the emulation and play this game smoothly. I never tried to do it on my iphone 4.
I love this game. Every now and then I do a playthrough out of nostalgia. :D Judgement Rites had a larger, more cohesive story arguably, but they switched from the clean digital graphics style of this game to digitize hand-painted graphics. Just as a matter of taste, I drastically prefer the colors and clean lines of this style. The space combat is quirky but damn, does it make you feel like you're in a Trek-style space combat. I think the only Star Trek games I've played that had space combat I enjoyed as much are Klingon Academy (which I haven't played much of) and the oft-forgotten hidden gem Star Trek: Generations game.
I’m about to play through Klingon Academy. I still think that’s in the top 5 space sims ever, they just nailed the space combat feel of a capital ship in my opinion.
@@azordash_games played starfleet academy first and then found, without knowing prior about it, a 6 CD hard cover of klingon academy -- i was hooked instantly and boy did I NOT regret buying this -- must've also been around the 2000s xD
A game that could genuinely do with a remaster. Update the combat, keep the episodic format and the puzzles. Update the visuals (or keep them) and boom!
I got this game as part of Interplay's 10 Year Anthology in 1993. I remember enjoying it quite a lot but there were so many other good games on that CD that I didn't finish the (un-voiced) Star Trek 25th Anniversary game. Fun, but lots of reading.
I remember playing this as a kid, it was probably the floppy version. I really liked it, but was never able to beat one of the later space fights, so I never finished it. I think the graphics were excellent for the time.
The space fights are definitely an exercise in frustration.... I get what they were going for, but it just didn't work for me. Definitely agree with you on the graphics!
Great review. I never saw this game back in the 90s. Being a fan of The Original series i'm definitely going to go and play this one now. Saw it on GOG.
I haven't played this. I always meant to, I just never got around to it. I disagree with one thing you said: The bridge doesn't look quite right. The viewscreen is too large. :)
Hi, a friend had the floppy pc version, it was great, later on when the cd + actors sound was released i let it go, but about 6 months later found it in the bargain bin so i purchased it, a year or 2 later i purchased judgement rights which is basically a continuation with bug fixes. I did get sick of looking up the galaxy map, and many people had scanned the map and uploaded to bbs, then cracks came out so any star was the right one, To win just go all the way with diplomacy The only playable issue was one senario where you are on a asteroid and you need a pin number for the door, but it is in binary or trinary ( if that is a word )
The first mission puzzle is so easy.. why are people always confused. You are told. The computer is waiting for a total eclipse to happen. What does that mean? It means the perfect alignment of three objects. So align the sliders in the middle and boom bang done.
@@azordash_games AVGN and others trash it. But as a lifelong Trek and NES fan, I regard it as one of the best games on that system. Maybe biased... But view it in the context of other NES games. It was quite advanced!
@johns8369 to have a game like that playable on the NES is reason enough for me to check it out. I also want to try the DS9 SNES game. Crossroads of Time.
@@azordash_games Crossroads is OK. Just a platformer. Fun enough. The TNG game on SNES and MD is great though - like a complex RPG almost. I did the mine map for GameFAQs for that. It's hard, maybe too much, but feels like a living breathing TNG universe.
The combat does indeed suck on this and Judgment Rites. The problem is that the final mission is a brutal combat mission. But both games are still among the best Trek games ever.
I can pretty much guarantee that this game really doesn't work for. Something like +10 years ago I tried this and I saw only few episodes of Next Generation and pretty much only remembered that crew members are good guys. So anyway I tried this game and virtually nothing made any sense and disliked the game. Now after that I've watched Next Generation and what's that series where they get lost and try to get back with female commander and Enterprise series along with few of the older movies. Now few months ago I played this bit and almost everything made sense. Game relies heavily on what each officers do and how episodes can proceed with away missions etc. and now I can say that game is very faithful to franchise and i wouldn't never ever suggest to even try it for anyone that hasn't seen like some season of Star Trek or seen like couple older movies. For Trekkies 10/10. For others like 4/10

Its a shame it ended in 2005 but atleast it ended on a high point, its better to not have more that could be so bad that it destroys the franchise sometimes.

Check out Bridge Commander if you haven’t already… probably the best Trek game in my opinion.

This was such a great game. I played it all the way through when it came out.
I think this game and its sequel were meant to be the canonical 4th and 5th years of the TOS' 5 year mission, which had been canceled 3 years in.

When you play a space battle Judgement Rites, try the L key. It was a Russian invention.
I shall try 🤠

The audio definitely makes the game. Especially some of those ridiculous Kirk replies, I can see how just the text would get old quickly…
I absolutely played the SHIT out of this game. This vid brought back some old memories.

@@azordash_games yeah.. It would be cool if there was an option to skip the fights. Some other point & click games with action sequences did that IIRC
From what I have read in the sequel they included an option to skip them!

Yeah look they clearly had the Ultra Wide 21:9 version installed on the Enterprise in this timeline!

Yeah I need to make time to check the sequel out, from what I have heard it improves a lot of the minor annoyances from the original.
