Just to note that is Jeri Ryan's voice you have in the video, a patch a few months after release put in her VO performance. Need the original CD to get the initial VO, which I still have in a box somewhere! Big shout-out to the expansion pack, which opens up almost the whole ship for you to casually explore, more a simulation mode rather than a game at that point, but if you're a Star Trek fan, it's absolute gold.

My favorite part of this game is how you can impact the mission story. It has no plot impact from what I can tell. For instance, on the borg ship at 9:03, that crewmate will always get decomissioned by a borg (I body blocked the rounds and found out that you can't take out the last borg until it takes out that crewmember) but depending on how well you do, he can actually survive the encounter. Later on, you can actually save Foster from being assimilated if you're fast enough, otherwise you lose him and get chastized for disobeying orders by Tuvac.
For the boss/miniboss encounters, it's a puzzle fight and not a brawl. For the hunter, you're supposed to wait out his barrage until his shield drops on reload and pop him with a single high damage round like the grenade. The crates are destructable aside from the essential ones that surround the exit door to that fight. I'm also pretty sure half of that mission was supposed to be stealth, lol. But that's what I was talking about before, you can actively impact the plot of each mission. I'm not sure if that unlocks different endings or anything...
I think my primary gripe is the same I have with any of these early FPS titles and that's the NPC companions on your missions. They make a concerted effort to get in the way of your shots on every single mission and are the primary reason I don't use that photon torpedo launcher. They're half the reason my accuracy lingers at 65% (the other half is skill issue). 8:42 demonstrates this perfectly when your crewmember pops up infront of you and just about eats the torpedo point blank in your face.
Also worth noting, this is Elite Force 2. If you check out the first game, it has a mode called virtual voyager that let's you explore every deck of the ship on an easter egg hunt, even hidden decks.

Voyager was the black sheep of the Star Trek community. It's looked back on fondly nowadays, but a LOT and I mean a LOT of people who made Star Trek huge with TNG fandom did not like Voyager AT ALL. I knew quite a few people that wouldn't play this just because it was Voyager branded. I wasn't a big fan of Voyager but I played the demo and found it pretty good so I gave it a shot. I would say it's branding hurt it overall. Voyager was and still is divisive.

It's funny because I always found DS9 the least 'Trek-like' in they were on a station, not a ship. It was 24/7 shore leave with drama, like Nazi vs Jew drama. Why waste fuel looking for adventure when adventure comes to you? Liked the actors, characters - just not the station(ary) stage.

I replayed this a few months ago, and it really does hold up. The whole game seems to be based loosely on the episode 'The Void' and obviously has elements of those creatures from 'Equinox' among many other aliens.
I really loved all of the expanded content like being able to walk around voyager, and the attention to detail with the LCARS interfaces. The high resolution textures are really good even when you compare to Elite Forces 2 which has comparatively low generic textures that don't really show interactions. Actually, I'd say that Elite Forces 1 has incredibly good character compared to Elite Forces 2 which was very bland by comparison, as well as restrictive.

I thought there was a more recent FPS, but, no, that was the Co-Op featuring third person shooter based on the Kelvin-verse just called Star Trek.
Star Trek is a very high and very low mood space when it comes to games, though that's not unlike its franchise counterparts elsewhere - I'm always itching for more ST content though, even if the most recent has been a low (Infinite) for a few reasons.

@@azordash_games Indeed it is! While I don't think new trek is immune from criticism just like anything else, I have enjoyed it despite some trek fans best efforts XD.
I bounced off Kelvinverse a little, but i I will appreciate its better moments and for keeping Star Trek ticking over during a down period - it has certainly lead to a lot of trek that I do enjoy, so good times. Maybe they'll finally make that next movie.
As far as its game legacy.. I'm pretty sure the TPS Star Trek wasn't a particularly good moment either, but even in the rough theres something good.. such as more trek? I do believe its the first instance of modern trek tackling the Gorn, though, which is now interesting to think about given where some things have gone since.

I agree that Elite Force is the best Star Trek FPS game, and I did enhoy it, but I do have one big criticism about it and it's the same exact thing that I HATE about games I've played that were designed by Raven Software: The use of cutscenes to show your character doing something that you should be doing yourself. It was like an obsession for them, that whenever your character needed to do something the slightest bit out of the ordinary, they'd put it in a cutscene.
For example (spoilers): At the end of the tutorial, you enter a room where a fellow crew member is being held, and it immediately switches to a cutscene showing your character shooting a control panel, blowing up the room, and ending the simulation. Tuvok then berates you for something you had no control over. Were the developers afraid that the player would never try shooting the panel? That whole sequence would have had so much more impact if the player had been in control and done it themselves. If the developers felt that was too obscure of a puzzle, they could have had the other guy say something like "Maybe you could try to disable that control panel." Then there's the cutscene where the Borg beam in and abduct Foster. How much cooler would that have been if you were still in control of your character and saw it happen right in front of you? Maybe feeling a bit of panic and confusion over what's happening as you scramble to try and stop them.
In Jedi Academy, another Raven game, you're trapped in a large room with Kyle and end up discovering a hole in the wall. A cutscene takes over to show the two of you jumping into the hold. It ends up being some kind of garbage masher that you have to jump out of. Were they afraid that you wouldn't jump in the hole? Does the cutscene at least cover up a new level loading? Nope, you can force jump back out of the hole back to the original room. The only thing I can figure is that they didn't trust that you would follow Kyle into the hole fast enough, so as to make the garbage masher part make sense. However that could have easily been solved by Kyle saying "Uh-oh, our combined weight has activated the garbage masher!" when you jump down, explaining why it didn't crush Kyle if you delayed following him. They could have even had Kyle yell "What are you waiting for? This is our only way out." if you didn't jump down.
Then there's the boss fight where she force jumps to a ledge that you can't get to and it switches to a cutscene as she makes a speech. Why did that have to be a cutscene? Why couldn't you listen to her speech in game? Were they afraid that players would just walk away? However the absolute worst example of this is when you encounter her for the second time. She's at the top of a tall staircase, and rather than have her come down it toward you so that you can fight her, it goes to a cutscene, not only showing her come down the stairs, but it shows your character fighting her for about a full minute. Then it returns control to you with your character standing on a large box while she wanders around waiting for you. When this happened, I was so pissed off, that I almost rage quit the game right there. I literally sat there in a rage for about 5-10 minutes, and yelled at the screen "Well, go on and finish it! What do you need me for?"
I have absolutely nothing against cutscenes that move the story forward, or that show you things happening elsewhere, but don't f***ing play the game for me! If there isn't a valid reason for me not to do something myself, don't SHOW me doing it in a damn cutscene!
OK, now that my cutscene rant is over, there's one other thing that I didn't know while playing the game, but that kind of ruins it for me if I want to go back and play it now: In any situation where you're with other team members, they don't actually need you. Because they spent so much time developing their characters, and using actors from the show, only some of the team members can die at scripted points, otherwise they're all 100% invincible. I discovered this when I was using NoClip to explore some parts of the levels and I flew up to the ceiling as they were attacks by a hoard of Species 8472. It took a while, but they eventually killed every last one of them. It definitely goes faster when you help, but in group fights, you're completely extraneous, and the only one in danger. It would have raised the stakes much more if it was possible for them to die. I realize that it would have been frustrating to fail a mission every time an NPC dies, but they could have given them much higher health and reset it between areas. That way it would have been possible for them to die, but would realistically only happen if you let it.
Finally, I was a little disappointed with the expansion pack. The Captain Proton holodeck mission was fun, and probably the highlight if the pack, but it was way too short. The Virtual Voyager was fun, but it still only allowed you to access key areas of the ship. It wasn't as if you could go to every nook and cranny of Voyager.
OK, now that all the negativity is out of the way, I did love the atmosphere, the weapons, the combat, etc. I also loved that they included the segment with the mirror universe stuff, especially that it was based on the original show. As for the multiplayer, I never really got into playing online. I was always a little behind the times and just never really knew how to get into it. Plus, watching videos of it, it seems like nobody plays such games strategically, it's just run continuously shooting all the time and dying/respawning repeatedly. It's like their forward key/button has been glued down. I did enjoy playing against the bots though, and this game, along with Jedi Academy has probably the best multiplayer setup of any game I've tried. I loved that I could easily define what all the characters on each team looked like, and that they were smart enough to play Capture the Flag. By comparison, the multiplayer setup in Elite Force 2 sucked, and the bots were braindead.

      @lurkerrekrul 2 месяца назад +1

@@azordash_games Another bit in Jedi Academy I thought wasn't handled that well, was your fight with the mutant rancor. I ran around that cargo bay dozens, if not hundreds of times, wasting all my ammo, staying as far away from it as possible, and making sure not to get cornered by it. After doing this for what seemed like hours and not seeing absolutely any way to progress, I finally gave up and read a walkthrough. What's the solution? Let it corner you so that a door will magically unlock. Yeah, I'm sure all top-tier players wait in a dead end for an unkillable enemy to corner them.
Anyway, I look forward to your eventual video on Elite Force II. I've got a few things to say about that one... ;)

24 years ago. That hurts my brain. Doom brought me in. Dark Forces made promises. Elite Force showed those promises were real. Today the variety of 1st/3rd person games is almost limitless with something for everyone. I always found it interesting that when it comes to games and the Star Trek IP, the first versions tended to be KLINGON with the Federation being used 2nd if the concept was sound - Academy is another example besides the FPS's.
All this time I didn't realize you could shoot the spawn markers/teleport stations for those flying things as one advances though that ship. @2:52 Sadly there is NO WAY to truly appreciate games like these unless you were buying them as they came out. A good example is me trying to get into the Final Fantasy world. I was PC before a single Japanese console existed. I've tried, but I just can't get into it.
