I watch a lot of these list, and yours is one that isn't biased for hero ships and well thought out. The top dog just happens to be my favorite ship for Starfleet, and the way you placed it and the others was really good. Might disagree with one or two's posistion on here, but they wouldn't be switched around hardly at all. You are really good at the technical ideology of stuff and look forward to other videos.

You would have thought with all of the possible threats in the Universe including the Romulans and Klingons, Starfleet would have built an actual Warship designed for nothing more than to defend/destroy objectives. Their one serious attempt was the flawed Defiant Class which they scrapped after only a few prototypes.
Literally every other race in the Universe had ships designed specifically for war, even the friggin' Ferengi had Warships for God's sake.
Given that, there were all of these races involved with Starfleet but yet, Starfleet was commonly getting outclassed in both shields and firepower by the Klingons and the Romulans. With all of the different races of people in Starfleet, they should have been the most powerful in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, hands down.
To be honest, while the Klingons had great armament on their ships, their shields were their Achilles heal. But the Romulans had the best shields and armament on their ships. If the Romulans were as war-like as the Klingons, the Romulans would have controlled the entire Alpha and Beta Quadrants.
Someone needs to come in and really "clean up" the canon timelines of both Star Trek Universes. They are both a mess and with the Discovery, that surely didn't help them at all lol.

Not counting ships from the Kelvin Timeline (The Vengeance dwarfs an Odyssey) or from other non canon sources like Star Trek online. The Odyssey is the biggest seen on screen. Technically we only see the J's interior on Enterprise with a ship schematic on a bulkhead. We can infer how big it is but it's not directly shown. In STO, the J or Universe class is the biggest, even bigger than Vengeance.

To answer this question, I think you could use a game that features as many of these ships as possible, equip them with the same or similar gear, and then test them against similar targets -- that is, if your focus is on military might, which Starfleet mostly was not. They had ships focused on exploration, science, patrol, diplomacy, defense, and projecting an image of power and strength, especially in the post-Wolf 359 era. You also have to contend with the fact that we have few or no canon feats for many Starfleet vessels, including the Universe- and Odyssey classes. Starfleet ships later specialized in specific fields and endeavours, so they would be great at one thing, and not great at others.
And then there are the outliers among their class, which were different because of what they had gone through. _USS Excelsior_ was different from other Excelsiors of her time, and completely different from _USS Lakota_ or an Excelsior-II. _USS Voyager_ was a completely different ship when she returned to Earth than the standard Intrepid-class she started as. 'Power' differs based on what it is the ship is doing.
Then there's the equipment installed. Warp drives, nacelles, power management systems, computers were all completely different in the 22nd, 23rd, and 24th centuries. Starfleet was comparatively outmoded until the later Ambassador or Narendra-classes. And the computers got overhauled again in the Intrepid's age. Starfleet's design doctrine also changed depending on what they needed, and what they had been through. The Connie and Sovereign were designed for different goals, yet the Sovy still refers back to the Connie in some ways.
And again, if you give various ships the same level of tech for their equipment, you're going to find less differences in their performances. Only their unique points would let you tell them apart. Games like _STO_ let you choose your ship without any specific requirements because only their traits and special abilities are different. You can play all the missions and beat them with any of them.

You really give the Connie a worf effect you know? The point is she IS that powerful, but gets crippled every time, so ingenuity using what’s left is what drives the story, and helps prevent ridiculous power creep like what happened in Star Trek Nemesis. Honestly I feel it forces better stories since it’s more about outfoxing the enemy using intelligent and combined tactics of the crew working together, then just more Dakka.

Think some conclusions weren't entirely based on accuracy. The Lakota was specifically upgraded and O'Brien's reaction inferred that this not not your typical Excelsior. The Defiant also falls in to this trap in the same episode having modifications that weren't known to Starfleet, however, there was only one ship of it's type so we don't know what a typical Defiant class would have. Pretty much every thing else made sense but you did slip up a few times.

The Ambassador was more akin to the Tiger tank, very powerful, very advanced but that was the issue, it was too tricky to maintain well or operate with peak efficiency, it was ahead of it's time but that was also where it fell down some times, would be like Independence day where we were trying to fly the alien ship, it was a clunky and awkward adventure which ended in a crash after a successful mission, 20 years later it was retrofitted to a good fighter fleet, the Ambassador/Galaxy story is similar to this as it was perfecting any of the Ambassador flaws.

If the torpedoes are powerful enough they can punch through active shields. Defiant's shields would not have protected her from quantum torpedoes.

Using Undiscovered country as a argument just in facts proves my point. As the enterprise is repeatedly hit by torpedoes doing no real damage until the shields start to collapse. Compared to just a couple hits to the unshielded BoP and it blows up.
This is also demonstrated in Enterprise TV show when the BoP is hit from the front and does almost no damage do to reenforced shields. The Enterprise had to loop around to hit the aft of the BoP to destroy it in just a couple of hits.

The Constitution class refit was taken out by a bird of prey due to the electrical short in the automation which left the ship helpless. This is true, although it only had 6 crew members if I remember correctly, at the time. But you seem to have forgotten that the Galaxy class with a full crew was taken out by an antique bird of prey. The Galaxy class did have very good fire power and excellent shields, but it was a paper tiger. If you could get past it's shields, it was easy prey as it couldn't take a hit without shields.
Although it isn't relevant to this list, I have always hated the way it looked. To me it looked like it belonged on a space version of the love boat, not like a ship that was expected to be able to fight. At least that does explain why it couldn't take a hit without shields. On the other hand the Constitution was made with the idea of having to be able to handle it's self without help. And the way it looks shows it. It looks like it can take a hit and was made to be maneuverable. It had a better turning radios than any comparable ship of the time. It was the ship that saved the federation in the Klingon war.
Although I do believe that the Constitution should be higher on the list, I must admit that you done a much better job on this list than I would have myself. Well done!!

As a primarily deep space explorer and first responder to emergencies, her monstrous engines were already an essential requirement for speed. It's logical to forgo the mass of physical defenses in exchange for maneuverability (which would already be a problem in a ship that size). Despite their need to create tension for exciting TV, Enterprise D's deflectors should have been able to tank far mor than what was depicted. When you add those phaser banks that could level cities...
As for the Constitution Class her hull was built before the defector screens were even a standard part of the loadout, Enterprise Refit possibly having one of the earliest setups, at least that's how it appeared to me in The Motion Picture when they first encountered V'Ger.

      @@andytol1976 First of all, don't worry about me getting offended just because you have a different opinion. That is how we should learn. ;-}}
I would say that your reasoning for the lack of armor would make since if it was made as one solid ship, although I would still disagree with it as a ship that size will never be hard to hit. But with it being made to separate, that should not be a problem. I know that for budget reasons in the show they didn't use that ability. But it is still a part of the ship. In my opinion what they should have done with the Galaxy design was to armor everything except the saucer section. Then when they separated, it would have been a deadly ship.
Regarding the Constitution class ship. It was originally made as a combat ship, although not a dedicated war ship. That was a large part of it's concept. And it always had shields. They just got an upgrade to them in the movie. One of the big advantages of the Constitution was that it was more maneuverable than it's Klingon counterpart.

Let's just say it as it is. The writers had to think of something to get rid of the Enterprise D to make room for a starship that fits better for the movies. :(

    Third is USS Nebula.
None of these have anything to do with power. Purely a looks thing.

I'd say the agility of the Galaxy class shown in Picard was a retcon tbh. It's never been shown being so agile. I would say it was possibly a limitation of model movement in TNG, but it was CGI in the Dominion war

    • @bairdrew
      @bairdrew 2 месяца назад

Whilst I agree the agility of the galaxy class is a retcon, I disagree with your reasoning why.
Right up through to the end of ST:Enterprise, shops were always treated as if they had mass. They took time to maneuver.
In almost all respects they acted like warships of the big-gun era that Roddenberry would have learned about on the radio or in magazines as a child.
When ST:Picard came along, it was at a time when that convention had long been abandoned by scifi shows for pure spectacle.
Technical limitations aren't germane because the concept qas different.

The Enterprise D was empty on Picard S3. No civilian, no children, no labs, no sickbay, no cargo, nothing.
Just space frame, engine, limited fuel, torpedoes and 4 people onboard.
Of course it got so agile.

Of their respective era, I would place the AGT Enterprise D (Galaxy X) and USS Prometheus with multi-vector-assault mode as the deadliest starfleet starships. We see the Prometheus easily disable a Nebula class. It destroys a Romulan D'Deridex flagship with absolute ease, and only being manned by 2 EMH holograms.
AGT Enterprise easily destroys a Klingon Flagship Negh'Var, while tanking shots from a second.

I do not know if these specs are considered cannon or not, but the NCC1701-J was supposed to be almost two miles in length. Or 3.2 KM. A Borg cube for comparison is 3kmsq. Far more mass, but not as wide in any direction.

Kruge did say they had him outgunned 10 to 1. Enterprise could have reduced that bird of prey to ash in both III and VI had it not been for the fact that both times she was at a disadvantage. In fact, Enterprise could have finished off the bird of prey in VI by herself after blowing it out of cloak.
