Tonasaso I don’t know about in America but here in the U.K. there’s a 10% leniency where you won’t get in trouble, if the limit is 30 mph it’s unlikely the police will do anything if you’re at 31-33mph. It’s mainly to account for inaccurate speedometers.

My Dad was a coach and I remember him teaching a few tricks plays to the team. On the rare occasion that they used them it was always such a sweet thing to see.
I used to do this all the time in Little League, in 2 years I bet I got at least 10. I especially liked to get the other coach's kid; they always acted like hot sh t, jumping around like a goofy; I showed them.
Nope, IMHO it's plain unfair because it’s not part of a sport based on the abilities to hit a ball, to pitch, to run or to catch a ball, not your ability to hide the ball, it’s a loop hole in some way like in soccer or basketball to fake a foul to get an advantage with a penalty shot or a free shot. Such cheap tricks just belong to a schoolyard game of little rascals but they should be far away from a professional field of any kind. Nevertheless it’s your fault to get caught in such plays because you NEVER have to lose your sight from the ball at all the time, more when it comes about baseball that is such a fast game. Ej, The first base actually throws the ball and the pitcher misses to catch it and you just lose the chance to steal the second base because you are not in the game.
Only thing I can think of here is why the bases need to be that small? It does barely fit one person to stand on which is a serious fault. If the bases were any larger any of this wouldn't be necessary and also it would be easier to see if a runner touches a base or not when running over one. I think it feels stupid to have bases that small.
It is a cheap trick, but there is a simple way to avoid this. Call "time" and lift your hand up to notify the umpire to make the call on dive backs. That was always the first thing I'd do, and as a second way to avoid it just keep a part of your body on the bag at all times until the pitcher gets on the rubber, then take your lead. Simple as that. Still think it's cheap.
There are two things that good baseball players get drilled into their heads when they first play baseball 1. When you dive/slide, always ask for time 2. Never lead off the base until the pitcher’s foot is on the rubber It is literally impossible to get duped by the hidden ball trick if you do these two things. Funny that some big leaguers still fall for it
I did this in a semi-pro NABA Ventura game in 1994. Pitching on fumes in the 8th, I called my 3rd baseman over and told him, "When I get off the pitching circle, the runner on 3rd will get his walking lead and then you tag him. Here's the ball." "Nuh uh! No way!" he said, "That's cheating." I almost yelled at him, "IT'S NOT CHEATING, you moron! Now, I'm fkn tired! It's 8-6, I get out of here, we bring in the closer next inning and we win! So STFU and take the ball!" My third baseman said, "GAWD! I hate you so much" as he walked away. Time in, I wander off the back of the mound, runner casually saunters off third and then I had never heard this in a game before or since - "I'm really sorry about this but... " Umpire yells, "YER OUUUUUUTTT!!" Runner says, "Huh?" I said, "BWAHAHAHAHA!!" My 3rd baseman says, to me as we walk off, "I still hate you." ___________________________________
A lot of ppl here saying it's cheap or unfair must not be baseball fans or have ever played the game. This sort of thing is what gives baseball that "it" that is different than other sports. It makes it fun. At the end of the day it comes back to fundamentals. Don't let go of the bag until he throws it back to the mound.
Psilocybin09 Good call, it really is. So many layers of intrigue an analysis. It can also be utterly hilarious. It's the funniest damn sport on the planet.
The announcer cracks me up in the TB trick. "The umpire's don't always know where the ball is." The first thing you are taught at Umpire School is that nothing happens without the ball, never take your eye off it. I don't know that I've ever seen a situation that a professional umpire doesn't know where the ball is.
I got hit with a no ball tap at second on an easy third base run, didn't realize dude didn't have the ball and didn't wait for ump so started walking to d/o, then immediately see the ball fly past me and damn pitcher got me out. Hard lesson i learned that day, i felt like a damn moron. Lol.
I'm not a sports fan, but I find this hidden ball trick to be the coolest thing to watch in my 40 years, sports wise. If there were more antics like this it would be much more fun to watch. Imagine if each inning had a modifier like multi ball or something.
love the way Longoria stands there behind Uribe, and just kinda casually examines Uribe, waiting for the brain fart, and sure enough, he got what he was looking for hahaahaa
U can u should just do it dude I mean don't listen just wait for them like that and get them and that's mlb they do curveballs sliders and shit and u don't normally do those in little league they don't want you to
Rookie of the Year, Henry had to pull these tricks in order to win because him arm was gone and Chet Stedman had already given his all. It's part of the game.
Usually after a play the ball is thrown back to the pitcher's mound in the center of the bases. Runners take this for granted and step off the base. As soon as you step off the base you are no longer safe from being tug out by the ball. The runner doesn't know the player covering their base has the ball.

PurpleLion35 I still play baseball at 52 years old (not softball, baseball). I have no fucking idea what playing baseball on a "personal level" even means and you sound like an insecure douchebag.
MopHeDD It's not having a "fit". It's part of the game. You make one of my teammates look foolish (although my teammate is equally to blame), you pay the price w/a welt on your backside. Same thing when a guy hits a HR and grandstands at the plate. I'm not suggesting a fistfight or throw at a guy's head. Hidden ball trick is w/in the rules but its also sort of BS play. But whatever, you're certainly entitled to your opinion.
As are you. I apoligize if I came off as a dick. Wouldn't be the first time lol. To me, the difference between the hidden ball trick and grandstanding at the plate is that one is directly helping you win the game according to the rules, and the other is just being a dick, IMO.
These clips are all cool, but this is weird. This is a weird tradition for a sport to have. Every time someone is called out on a HBT play, it seems cheap and unsportsmanlike and petty, almost like a successful flop for a foul in basketball and soccer.
Steve G it's rarely done. The HBT isn't petty because the sport promotes alert base running. If you want to get up you call timeout. The ump will halt the game and allow you to dust off. It is also the base coaches responsibility to alert his runner of the situation.
For one, not "tradition", just rules. For two, HBT happens very rarely, especially considering that the MLB season is 162 games X 30 teams not including playoffs. Meanwhile, in other sports, they flop like fish every time someone breathes on them. Not the same.
I don't necessarily like it but it's as much as a rule as any. though yes I do find HBT's cheap for the sense that it basically can nullify a great play just by not seeing the ball.
So wrong and against the spirit of sport. You have touched base to indicate that you are safe and then as you stand up to be tagged is so wrong and ought to be written out of the sport, as it is unsportsmanlike conduct
Probably why cricket is a gentlemen's sport where, once your bat grounds in the box you are safe and in. You can then bimble outside the box the tap down any divots. But Taj Mahal whilst I appreciate the sarcasm the pitcher doesn't have or need to say what he is throwing. You can disguise the ball anyway you can as in cricket or any other sport.
I still remember bitterly this trick being used against me in little league! I was a very fast runner, and therefore always a threat to steal. Cleverly, they used this trick against me. Although I eventually played in college, I'm still a little pissed off about it! Hey, it's only been forty years since it happened. lol

Yeah, also the pitcher should have to tell the batter what kind of throw he is going to use each time, right?
+Taj Mahal Agreed. Theres a reason its allowed. The rules are simple. Stay touching the base and you're safe, get of of it and you better stay sharp.
Don't forget how the batter should say sorry for getting a hit. People's feelings are at stake, damn it.
no its one of the quirks that makes baseball fun
That last one. *doink!* haha
Is that Ozzy Guillen? Hahaha 5:11
We used to do the wild pickoff play and the hidden ball trick. So much fun to whisper to the ump "hey be watching me".
Omg this is a really good edited video
ty :)
But it PLAGIARIZED.
+rafdavfl shut up it isn't there isnt a lot of successful hidden ball tricks stop complaining u wouldn't do good in a vid u sorry little idiot
the one good call AH had in his career
It doesn't happen often, it rarely works when it does happen, but man a well executed ball trick is always a good show.
I still remember bitterly this trick being used against me in little league! I was a very fast runner, and therefore always a threat to steal. Cleverly, they used this trick against me. Although I eventually played in college, I'm still a little pissed off about it! Hey, it's only been forty years since it happened. lol
I used it a few times when I played first base. It usually worked. What made me mad was the bad guys used it against me too -- and it worked.
Gosh I had forgotten Miggy used to play left field. Also forgot about Greg Counsell's weird ass batting stance. Good memories
